#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Welcome to #personalizedPD tonight! Excited to talk about summer plans, learning, relaxing, recharging. Pre-question, what is your favorite 80s song? Random, yes!
Thank you for joining us tonight for #personalizedPD
Please welcome guest moderator, Rachelle Dene Poth @Rdene915

Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book and chat. https://t.co/UKHXahxKzN
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Just a warning, if I disappear or am slow to respond, it is because I just dropped my Macbook on the ground and the keys are not right :( #personalizedPD
Vanessa here, school counselor from NJ. Favorite 80s song... anything from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack! Looking forward to tonight's chat! #personalizedPD

Hello #personalizedPD

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds
Vacation - Go Gos
A1 Honestly having extra time to read, learn new tech tools, reflect on my prior school year and plan for the new one, is a definite way for me to recharge, and of course my @voxer book studies and groups #personalizedPD
A1: I will recharge by visiting my 19-year old son who has been living in Europe and having him be 100% in charge of where we go and what we do! #personalizedPD
I cannot recall the last time I actually sat and just focused on a tv show, and forget movies, and I have never watched Netflix. Truth! #personalizedPD
A2: How I plan to recharge over the summer is by spending time with my little one, reading some books just for fun, getting bite-size PD here and there, all while getting some sun! #personalizedPD
A1: Take time to write, eat lots of crap food, read, read, read, and drive my kiddos all over the county. I love working with @CTWritingProj to recharge with other writing teachers. #personalizedPD
A1: Not go to every meeting or PD scheduled. Read the book "Rich Crazy Asians" and hopefully seee the movie when it comes out. Spend family time. #personalizedME#personalizedPD
#personalizedPD A1: I love early morning walks that end at the coffee shop. I always carry a book to enjoy. Also, love hiking, time to create crafty things, and time for friends! :-)
A2: no. I went to an @Edcamp_LV and that was long enough without my kids. My oldest just turned 6 so they are a handful... I don’t get out much- Pd or for fun, lol! #PersonalizedPD
A2: Yes! #ISTE18 and taking the month of July off and recharging the batteries. I asked a friend to make sure I would not commit to anything else this summer to take a short break;) @jennyd28#personalizedPD

A2 - I’ll be presenting some local PD and possibly some out of state. Time is really valuable, and I always think about how much my family is important to me. #personalizedPD
#personalizedpd Not really. I teach at a STEM summer camp and Science Conference locally. Then I travel for fun with my family usually to Albuquerque and around Texas.
A2) I’ll be working with teachers in North Carolina, Ohio, and New Jersey this summer. Love traveling to provide #PersonalizedPD and connect with great educators.
#personalizedPD A2: This year I'm going to San Diego for AVID training. :-) Also going to Phoenix...Oregon (just down the road) for Oregon Writing Project ;-)
A2 I look forward to the extra time in the summer to travel to conferences, especially to #iste18 and this year to @USMSpark and #ST4T , cannot wait to see friends and learn! #personalizedPD
A2: The most I travel for PD in the summer is up and down the NJ turnpike. Looking forward to @NJSCA Summer Development Institute at my alma mater @TCNJ#personalizedPD
I just received the last shipment of mine, think I am good to go until next week, when the #4OCFpln starts talking about more great books #personalizedPD
A2 Years ago I never traveled for PD, just kept up with my CLE credits as an attorney by going to classes in Pgh, but since ISTE 2015, conferences in the summer are a must for me #personalizedPD
A2 Yes and no! I travel every summer to Chicago to The Pampered Chef National Conference which is technically PD, just not focused on education! #personalizedPD My edu PD is a lot closer!
A2: Minimal PD travel this year for me. Working on my Admin degree so PD money is scarce. ISTE right here in Chicago but I'll be traveling with my family to Yellowstone. #personalizedPD
A.2 No Travel for my own PD
Staying local for #Better_together
in CA
Will be heading to New Jersey in August to give PD on Dynamic Teaching in the Block Schedule.
#PersonalizedPD
I have serious FOMO on all the book studies @mlarson_nj talks about, but I try to know my limits. Will jump in to one of the next ones when I get caught up! #personalizedPD
A1 I, like a lot of strange educators, recharge during the summer by getting pumped for the next school year. Reflecting on changes I want to make, creating new resources, and connecting with a PLN. #personalizedPD
A2 I travel to far away lands like Denton (40 min) and Richardson (20 min) but generally stay within N TX to enjoy the 100+ degree days. Who would want to miss that?! A lot of phenomenal PD can be found from the comfort of my couch though! #personalizedPD
that was my first big conference, I took Amtrak there back in 2015, first time using tweet deck, reading #tlap headed to ISTE and just amazed at technology #personalizedPD
A3: My school year is noisy, and while I can balance a great many things, summer is a great time for me to just focus on a book or idea and let it simmer #personalizedPD
A3: Even though we're busy in the summer, we don't have deadlines looming and grading to do. We can focus on ourselves for once and connect w/ other Ts. #personalizedPD
A3 I like it because it is on my own schedule, I don't have to miss school, I can have more time to read, create and focus on specific topics, connect with PLN more #personalizedPD
isn't that amazing, everyone has the perception we take summers off, which technically most don't report anywhere specific, but rather lots of different places and ways to learn and grow #personalizedPD
A3: We all need to reflect on what we need and pursue that however you can. I ❤️ book studies. I learn so much more through the conversations with my peers. #personalizedPD
A3: It is ME time and everyone needs some! We talk about creating personalized experiences for Ss, why not for us? Voice and choice for everyone! #personalizedPD
A3: It is important because summer is a time to reset, refresh, and reflect... While planning for the year(s) ahead, summer #personalizedPD is a perfect fit!
A3: We meet the conditions of optimal learning when we are relaxed and have less stress in our lives. It's why the best ideas come to us in the shower! #personalizedpd
A3 it’s important to take time for #personalizedPD during the summer when you have the time and energy to delve into new ideas. You can collaborate with Ts you don’t see in your day-to-day and make adjustments based on the prior year while it is fresh on your mind.
A3: It's important to make time for some PD in the summer because it keeps our creative juices flowing in our minds, so we can partake in mini-revamps to ourselves and/or our material come the new school year. Keeping it fresh! #personalizedPD
A3 - I think it’s always important to be better, even if it’s only by doing the smallest things. Pd in the summer can be really relaxing and it’s s great way to connect with others. Also, it’s usually really laid back and fun! Lots of reward and little risk. #PersonalizedPD
A3: So often (especially when you teach PreK), the PD during the school year doesn't pertain to you, specifically. The summer is the perfect time to feed your own professional passions! #personalizedPD
A3: I thing the personal part is important. Instead of PD being all about what others think I should learn, #personalizedPD speaks to the heart of what I know I need in order to grow as an educator and a human.
A3: to keep you mind from going to mush. To take advantage of looking at things from a different angle- when there aren’t ss who want to tell you stories or grading and plans. Allows for reflection as well. The more time they passes the more diff it is to reflect.#personalizedPD
A3: It allows my mind to consider new ideas without having the pressures of the accelerated pace that we face while school is in session. #personalizedPD
A3) I compare it to the off-season in sports. I feel I need to add something to my repertoire or I will lose my effectiveness. To be a champion you have to train your heart, body, and mind. #personalizedPD
#personalizedPD In the summer without our main focus on our classrooms we can relax a bit and focus on personal growth. We are more free to combine PD and take our time to reflect and absorb new ideas and strategies
#personalizedPD In the summer without our main focus on our classrooms we can relax a bit and focus on personal growth. We are more free to combine PD and take our time to reflect and absorb new ideas and strategies
so true, feel better about sitting down for a while to read, write, do a chat without the pressures of the other daily demands of our schedules, nice to have a break #personalizedPD
Realize this is out of order, but need to answer the most important question; My name is Kassidy Wagner, I teach in Prosper ISD, and Video Killed the Radio Star is without a doubt the best 80’s song of all time #personalizedPD
That time to absorb it is so important. Whatever we get in PD during the school year is like, "Hey, that's really cool, but I've got work to grade, lessons to plan, kids to peel off the ceiling, yada yada yada... maybe next year". #personalizedPD
A4 So many "bests" but it always comes down to the time I get to spend with my friends at the different conferences, or connecting through Voxer or F2F, every time it is just awesome #personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
I know summer is lurking right around the corner, but we would for you to surface to the top of the chat. Share your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A4: Going to different conferences, #patioPD, twitter chats. There's "best" in all of those! It's what you make of those PD opportunities! #personalizedPD
A3 Oftentimes you have a choice to pick PD that is enriching. You don't have to worry about making lesson plans, a substitute not showing, or how your students are acting. #personalizedPD
A4 - that’s hard because of almost 3 decades of teaching. I’d say just watching amazing teachers at work. It’s impossible to pinpoint one big thing, especially over many years. Watching excellence is the best tool for learning. #PersonalizedPD
A3: I try to teach moderation. There’s a time to play and a time to learn. By getting off and then getting back on track takes practice.I start in September, and by now they can switch pretty well! There needs to be time for both in their lives. I tell them that. #PersonalizedPD
A4: @voxer has been the best learning experience for me (next up @Twitter). I have connected with an amazing PLF #4OCFpln who supports and challenges me daily. #personalizedPD
A4: Seeing the documentaries, "Paper @PaperTigersDoc Tigers" and "Resilience" and then hearing @SporLin (Jim Sporleder) speak about trauma-informed/trauma-responsive. This gave a name to everything I ever believed about teaching. Life-changing!! #personalizedPD
A4 I would have to say attending #edcamps because #PD there is timely and genuine. A place to gather best practices and ideas from your peers without feeling left out. #personalizedPD
A4 Another series of "bests" have been my times at @fetc with my PLN and learning much in that week , and ISTE every year, for the same reason #personalizedPD
I am beyond jealous. I really want to get a group of Ts to do one of the programs at our school. I can't even begin to imagine the positive impact of it. #personalizedPD
In reply to
@Rdene915, @ingewassmann, @ProjectZeroHGSE
A4: Twitter has afforded me the opportunity to meet with so many great folks. Voxer has really personalized my PLN. Feels like I work with some people every single day. #personalizedPD
A4: Last summer my PD consisted of signing up for Twitter and collaborating with other amazing educators on here! One of my best investments in terms of PD! #personalizedPD
A4b All those resources have taught me new skills, encouraged looking at different perspectives, pointed out things I need to learn and things I'm doing well #personalizedPD
#PersonalizedPD Presenting at district science conferences and attending Edcamps- this yeR plan on presenting at CAST and other state conferences- then national conferences- baby steps
A4 Learning from other teachers and instructional coaches. It's a bonding experience to know you share the same struggles, and this is how you view the situation. A different point of view can often be helpful. #personalizedPD
A4: Twitter chats. I always have crazy ideas. Talking to people on twitter makes me share them and helps me realize that they are ones that should and need to be shared. That I can carry out the crazy ideas because all of my PLN does... and some. #PersonalizedPD
A4 My best tip is what we are doing right now; sharing and connecting with other professionals in the field. #TransformProsper brought in @gcouros today and blew everyone’s minds. Everything starts with a positive relationship and grows exponentially from there! #personalizedPD
A4: @ProjectGUTS was AMAZING! As a computer science enthusiast, learning how to directly link CS and science through simulations was fantastic! Would love to add to our museum programming! #personalizedPD
A4 #personalizedPD Two years ago starting my blogs, jumping into Twitter and collaborating with my PLN was the best decision I have made. Learned more these last two years than in all of my Masters degree
A4b - Summer PD with a dear friend who has helped me write. He inspired me with ideas that seem so common sense, but were often not observed. #PersonalizedPD
Joining @SocraticOrg. Answering questions for people around the world and realizing how clarity is invaluable. Forced me to look at how I was explaining to my students. What assumptions I was making? Was I clear and concise? What false notions did I bring.
#PersonalizedPD
A4) SBG Seminar with Tammy Hufflebower from @MarzanoResearch changed my teaching life. After that I did nothing the same. Totally, opened my eyes and transformed my thinking. Since then, I've learned from many amazing educators. #personalizedPD
A4: It is all about relationships! Gathering with fellow educators at conferences or online. It gives me that new perspective I hadn't considered yet, or gives me inspiration to try something new. #BLC18#iSTE18#ShiftinEdu#SSEDS#personalizedPD
A5 my professional growth is going to be in finding ways to better take care of myself while still doing all the things I want. I was great at it for a while, new baby & new book threw me way off! #personalizedPD
Implementing more growth mindset building. Too many Ss shying away from classes they deem too hard b/c they have to think or they are “bad” at a subject. #PersonalizedPD
Been to @EdCampMadWI twice now. And even though @AggieSalterITS will tell you otherwise I go there for the connections and the learning - not just for Spotted Cow. #personalizedPD
In reply to
@Rdene915, @AnibalPachecoIT, @EdCampMadWI, @AggieSalterITS
A5: I want to make my sessions more personalized for the attendees. I plan to include more surveys (before AND after) for greater feedback and reflection. #personalizedPD
#personalizedPD A4 1- Twitter and online journals, photos of action. Love reading these when I have a few secs. 2- examine common problems of practice with colleagues engaged in similar work. Changed my practice through helping me reflect on what I can control.
Also, I am going to get the chance to Keynote #atg18 at Stockton University this summer for @sriettc which will provide lots of learning opportunities #PersonalizedPD
A5: I have a lot of work to do with prepping to teach AP Research this year. Love the fact that an AP course allows Ss to choose their topic & their path. #personalizedPD
I started sending surveys a few years ago, makes such a difference for attendees, we create proposal so far in advance, things change and we need to know our audience, more personalized #personalizedPD
A5: Nothing specific at this time but to just take time to read all the amazing books that have been piling up on my shelves...learn and grow time! (When summer comes...still a ways off!)#personalizedPD
A5 For me it is all about giving back and sharing the knowledge. Getting educators to join in on Twitter and for them to share and question other Ts to build new knowledge. That for me its mission accomplished! #personalizedPD
A5 I hope to collaborate with my vertical teams to create 3 Act math tasks that are rich in content and questioning for students. I want my students to be curious in my class each day and to empower them with the skill to explain “why”, rather than just the answer #personalizedPD
I have a colleague that continually pushes me out of my comfort zone! I am presenting for the first time outside of my district! I understand that fear! #personalizedPD
A4: My best has been the AASSA conference in Rio which showcased the power of student voice. I changed my idea for my masters project after that conference. #PersonalizedPD
A5: Areas I'm hoping to grow in this summer is blogging on my website (articles to specific to parents & counselors), partaking in speaking engagements for community agencies & parenting groups, and refining my small counseling group topics and activities. #personalizedPD
You are my hero! I want to see more of that in our school, but I don't teach math. I just keep preaching the importance of creating that mindset of questioning and problem solving. #personalizedPD
A5: I am wanting to learn more about digital curation and continue working on bringing the museum to life outside of the physical building... #personalizedPD
I so wish I could have stuck around and been there! #personalizedpd. The silver lining is that you met some of the awesome folks I had the privilege to work with at @earj_com_br and here we are still chatting!
Best pd travel... a week in PR, most expenses covered, to foster a deeper understanding of the influx of students from there when I was teaching in Fl.
#personalizedPD
A6: I have a ton of play therapy and parenting books I bought this year, but still need to read, in efforts to improve my practice and knowledge base! #personalizedPD
I would love to chat with this amazing group of educators more #personalizedpd Please join me Thursdays 5:00PST/7:00CST/8:00EST For #teachmindful and Friday’s 4:30PST/6:30CST/7:30EST for #stucentclass -2 30 minute chats on education
Wow, those are all going to be great ways to learn, #LT8keys is a tremendous book, as well as the others, I have . Kasey's in my pile of to be reads! #personalizedPD
If anyone out there is a Math teacher and you haven't read Mathematical Mindsets yet, let's just say it would be highly recommended (only because I was told you should never tell anyone they HAVE to do something). #personalizedPD
A3) During the summer, teachers can focus on curriculum development, rather than the flurry of activities and demands that a normal school year requires. Setting goals and carrying them out requires time! For most of us, that time is available in summer. #personalizedPD
I have been using those in my 8th grade #STEAM class too, I made a bigger one, then had the Ss make them as well , here is my 1st one #personalizedPD .
I celebrate the same favorites as you, I start my morning early with reading @Getting_Smart then go through those, as well as eschoolnews throughout the day #personalizedPD

The problem w/ just offering choice is, am I differentiating training or learning? Letting Ss pick their west only differentiates the Applying level. Like Ss, Educators need authentic learning and sustainable autonomy. #personalizedPD
We had a day where the afternoon had choices, and some of my Ss led two #edtech PD session on their fav tech tools and WHY they are their favs, what they do, how they help them to learn, it was the 1st time doing this #personalizedPD
Just hoping to make sure I am recharged and energized to get back to work. I am doing a lot of my next year prep right now so I can enjoy a bit more summer. #PersonalizedPD
The problem w/ just offering choice is, am I differentiating training or learning? Letting Ss pick their west only differentiates the Applying level. Like Ss, Educators need authentic learning and sustainable autonomy. #personalizedPD
A4) Attending the Gurian Institute was a game changer. Understanding the neuro-biological differences in how boys & girls learn helped me design lessons that fit their needs. I think all K-12 teachers (esp in single sex schools) should go! https://t.co/tCEmfgqmWw#personalizedPD
A7: I’m still in school, and with all these strikes here in Brazil, it’s getting pretty complicated. When I’m off for break, my goal is to relax. I need to recharge my battery. #PersonalizedPD
A7: Before returning in Sept., I hope I accomplish self-care in the forms of exercise, mindfulness, and time with friends & family. As counselors we are often focused on others we tend to forget ourselves. Looking forward to be rejuvenated for September! #personalizedPD
#personalizedpd Hopefully some published articles and a few more chapters of my book. Want to focus on my writing and submission of my first articles- jumping in to that 😊
Just hoping to make sure I am recharged and energized to get back to work. I am doing a lot of my next year prep right now so I can enjoy a bit more summer. #PersonalizedPD
A5) I just discovered the #singlepointrubric so I’ll be updating all formative and summative assessment rubrics. Present only the criteria for success, and check where students exceed, meet, or fall short. Can be applied to speech, writing, or performance. #personalizedPD
A.5 I am going to be teaching more Algebra next year.
I want to get away from the text ala @ddmeyer and get more actual life examples of problem solving PBL
#personalizedPDhttps://t.co/6lLd0BA24R
A7 #personalizedPD I am hoping to get an article or two published-my first time submitting and writing some more chapters in my book- my focus is on writing this summer by blog posts and longer articles
A6 my favorite podcast is @Gladwell Revisionist History. Although it’s not *specifically* about teaching, it presents important stories and information in a creative and intriguing way that we can apply in our teaching and classrooms #personalizedPD
A6) Lots of books on teacher leadership: Our of Our Minds by @SirKenRobinson, Teachers and Texts by Michael Apple, Best Practices for Teacher Leadership by Randi Stone. #personalizedPD
A7 I hope to organize my Google Drive, because I’ve waited around and no one is going to do it for me. Also, I hope @GoogleForEdu hears my plea for colored folders on Team Drive. #thebiggestdream#personalizedPD
Travel IS professional development!! The world is our curriculum. Go somewhere new. Meet the locals. Learn the history. Make meaningful connections. #personalizedPD
