I felt most connected to school when I was interviewing & writing for the student newspaper. During 3 yrs of HS, I had newspaper class and lab, so at least two hours of journalism per day. Loved lab when nearing deadline, bec. our advisor would bring Crazy Bread. #oklaED
My name is pronounced Ta-Lane-Na. I teach math at NWC in @OKCPS. I felt most connected through all of the extracurricular activities like class competitions, pep assemblies, etc. #oklaed
Krista Steiner #cpsreds Spanish Educator I felt connected as I student through connections made OUTSIDE of the classroom. Lol School activities that reached beyond the walls. #oklaed
Stacy Ford PK-5 Teacher-Librarian at Reagan Elementary in Norman. I felt the most connected when curriculum allowed me to be challenged and creative. #oklaed
Allyson Trimble, 3rd grade teacher in Vici. I felt most connected when teachers spent time with me outside of class, e.g., when they let me hang out and talk to them after school was out. #oklaEd
I’m Meagan Williams, I teach Pre-K 3 at a small Catholic school in Tulsa. Honestly, I never really felt connected in my school years. #scstulsa#OklaEd#EIPT3043
Jon Echols Stare Representative HD 90.
As a student sports were always a great way for me to connect. I guess that is why I coached Jr. High and High School football for four years. #oklaed
I wish more schools could provide journalism programs. Great for helping students see the importance of research, reading, and writing. We ran through the whole writing process every single month! #rethinkela#oklaed#kidsdeserveit
April Stobbe, Shawnee Board of Ed #oklaED Felt most connected when participating in student led activities and extra curricular events - homecoming floats, leadership organizations, etc.
A1: Having conversations with students about life and topics they are dealing with on a daily basis. Not focusing on being the "adult" in the room, rather focusing on student collaboration. #oklaed
I’m sure there were a lot of ways I could have connected with my school as a student- but I played basketball and tennis and was not super social…#oklaed
A1 - This is super simple, but I talk to them. I show them who I am outside of the teacher persona and build connections. I love teaching and my students and I hope it shows to them. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A1 - In my classroom, we share stories. I start by sharing mine - it’s important to show Ss I am human. Then they share theirs. Also, I show up at their events as often as possible and bring my family. #oklaed
A1: I try to remember names and retain current events going on in Ss lives (eg. birthdays, sporting events, or follow-up about plans they e shared). #oklaed
A1) My go-to strategy to help Ss feel connected is to talk to them. Ask them about their interests, notice them when they seem disconnected, invest in them. #oklaed
I don’t necessarily have a go to strategy…but have a question: what if we required every student to participate in at least two school connected things: band, sports, journalism, stuco, drama, choir…etc.
#oklaed
A1: I greet my students outside of my classroom prior to the start of every class. I talk to them. I play my guitar and sing for them. It's pretty LIT! #oklaed
Shane Sanders, Asst. Principal, @OKCPS always felt connected to the school because of the enormous amount of school spirit, and pride the cane with being a Charger, TBird, Bomber. #SchoolClimiate#oklaED
A1 I give Ss opportunity to write and share their writing every day, on topics important to them as frequently as possible. (Self-selected.) I also encourage them to share with each other. #oklaED
A1. My strategy is easy. I listen to my S’s. Then give them my two cents. I also try to go to as many DC events I can. I even went to a cheer competition yesterday which is like my worse nightmare, but I went to support my kids. #OklaEd
A1: #oklaed The best part of my work as a Central Office person is when I get out of the Central Office. I love getting know kids at their events and in their classrooms.
A1: As a classroom T I felt that building relationships with my students was my number 1 way to connect, show them we shared interests, that I cared about them #oklaed
A1: Since I teach young children, I stay best connected with them by keeping up to date on what shows they watch, talking with them about little things that are important to them, and giving out all the hugs they need! #OklaEd#EIPT3043
A1: Simply treat them like they matter. Listen first and pay attention to the non-verbal language they are speaking. Mistakes don’t define anyone. Try to make my office a safe place for students as needed. #oklaed
A1 I also sponsor a writer's group so that Ss who are interested in sharing their stories can work outside of class to do so. I am focusing this year on helping them find ways to be published. #oklaed
What if we could have assemblies that focused on and recognized non-athletic non-stuco students? Not taking a dig at either of those groups…just asking…#Oklaed
A1: As a teacher-librarian I offer times and spaces for students to engage with me that aren’t specifically tied to curriculum. Makerspace, reading aloud during lunch, conversations with students. #oklaed
A1: Listening to their stories, attending their sports activities, reading their faces first thing in the morning and knowing what each face means and is trying to tell you. Not forcing anything. Don't want to high 5 me, okay. Maybe later. or tomorrow. #oklaed
I love your question and idea but what about those students who have to have a job by 9th grade to help pay rent and buy groceries and cannot join one of those. Do they get punished? #oklaed
A1: talk to them and connect with them. I don’t know, I just do it. I care about the new sibling they’re about to have & how their soccer game went. I love talking to my kids. Morning meeting is great for this. Also, have lunch with them. #oklaed
I love your question and idea but what about those students who have to have a job by 9th grade to help pay rent and buy groceries and cannot join one of those. Do they get punished? #oklaed
Our goal at #tuttleEDU is to make sure every student finds an activity to be engaged in and if they can't find one then we encourage them to start one. 87% are in some form of enrolled activity. Working on the other 13% through clubs. #oklaed
#oklaed@watersenglish One of my favorite student groups in Mid-Del is the Eagle Press from Del City High School. Stephanie Terry's kids put out professional journalism!
I wish more schools could provide journalism programs. Great for helping students see the importance of research, reading, and writing. We ran through the whole writing process every single month! #rethinkela#oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1: I try to tell every student something positive every class. I also try to make at least one game of most sports (fall short on this one sometimes). #oklaed
A-1 I speak to them when I see them at breakfast or in the hall. If they've been ill, I ask them if they are better. I try to say something nice about their shoes, shirt or hair. You can usually find something. If you see them doing something nice, take time to say it. #oklaed
What if we could have assemblies that focused on and recognized non-athletic non-stuco students? Not taking a dig at either of those groups…just asking…#Oklaed
A1: I had a sign at the top of my classroom door that said “Learn Like a Champion Today” on one side and “Act Like A Champion Today,” on the other. Kids had to jump up and tap it when they entered and exited the classroom. They loved it and couldn’t wait to do it lol #oklaed
I had amazing Ts who invested in me big time. Danny Blackshear, Colleen Mallory, Kendra Pryor, @melhau11, Beth Thompson, Barbara Berard. My education is full of rockstar Ts who made me feel valued and capable. #oklaed
A1: Classroom it is team/relationship building we spend the first week doing that because they have to be involved in culture creation or isn’t real to them. I’m a Link Crew sponsor and we train Jr/Srs to mentor freshmen for the year and host activities for them! #oklaED
Lu Ireton - I have shared her name before. She made such a connection to our Calc class, we delivered roses to her, one at a time at the beginning of class one day. First kiddo walked in with a vase. Everyone else dropped in a rose. #oklaed
A1a: Reading stories together, modeling how I connect with the characters, and listening to student connections. Sometimes things that happen in a story help kids to see that they aren’t alone. #oklaEd
A2: As an 8th grader I was an assistant for an ELA teacher, that was 38 years ago, I can still remember how Mrs. Kirven made me feel, important, worthy, smart #oklaed
In many instances they do, but to truly excel it requires outside work and effort. Plus what about students that cannot fit it into the schedule because of grade or credit issues. I think the idea is great, just worry t it could push those on the fringe further away. #oklaed
Glad to hear this! I spent many hours in the "Pub Club" at Westmoore working on The Jag Wire under the tutelage of Sally Burr. Learned so much about writing! #oklaed
Mike Dunn, Del City HS.. Athletic Director - Head Football Coach. I felt most connected in school through great literature teachers and coaches that taught me how to handle failure, the same as success.. Glad to be back, it’s been awhile. Let’s go! #oklaed
A2: I think I’d have to say my second grade teacher, Mrs. Brown, or my elementary school counselor, Mrs. Curtis. While I don’t remember a lot of our counseling session chats, she somehow got me through my 4th grade year! #OklaEd#EIPT3043
A2: Mrs. Mathewson, my high school marketing class, convinced me that my introvertedness (??) was not real, and that I could speak in front of people well. I laughed - then became a state officer for DECA! I like finding my Ss hidden talents! #oklaed
A2: Well,I was a pregnant teenager in high school. My senior year. My HS English teacher was one of the first people I told. She could have had a negative reaction. Instead, she jumped up and down with excitement for me. She is why I became a teacher. I want to do that. #oklaed
I know to many great teachers I don’t think I could single one out. But I remember Mary Bonner from Red Oak Elementary. She made a difference in my life in elementary. To this day I am still friends with her and her husband Judge Bonner. #sometimesthehardkidsturnoutokay#oklaed
These are complicated things to consider - but I think if we can look outside of our box, we can find a way to accommodate for those who have an after school commitment. It doesn’t have to be athletics/drama/music. It could be anything. Anything that pulls that kiddo in. #oklaed
A2: My favorite English Teacher and Yearbook advisor Mr. Ron Springfield, he was so tough on us but he believed and encouraged us and made us feel like there was nothing we couldn't accomplish! #oklaed
A2: Mrs. Edwards, my elem. choir teacher and Ms. Schwartz, my high school dance teacher. Both went out of their way to make me feel seen and loved. #oklaed
A2 My HS English teacher... i was not getting my work turned in...she connected with me through my interest in Drama...she saw the potential for me to be a better S. #OklaEd
A2: I went to a small, small school. My 11/12 ELA/Yearbook/CreativeWriting teacher, Penny Batson pushed me like no one else ever had. She also formed relationships with us by allowing us to hang out in her room during lunch. #oklaed
A2: Growing up, I was connected to several Ts & Admin. So much so that is was my former librarian @BarnettJeanene that asked if I had considered applying for my current job. The other day my former Sup stopped by to say he’s proud of me @dglover4011#oklaed
A2: I remember our phone was disconnected growing up&my elementary school principal Mr. Hinton drove2 our house to check on us. 👀My gym teacher Mr. P @SteedChargers also showed that he really cared by building relationships with us and holding us to high expectations! #oklaed
A1) I try to greet students each morning at the drop off line. I also try to float around during breaks and lunches to have conversations with the students. #oklaed
A3: Connect with parents, talk to them & kids, keep open communication, have students bring pieces from home into the room (photos, artifacts, etc.), give them time to share and write about themselves. #oklaed
A2: I think I’d have to say my second grade teacher, Mrs. Brown, or my elementary school counselor, Mrs. Curtis. While I don’t remember a lot of our counseling session chats, she somehow got me through my 4th grade year! #OklaEd#EIPT3043
A3: While this is an old tool it still works, I always ask my kids about their weekends and nights, even if the answer is, “it was good”. That will open the door for later down the road to getting deeper and more connected. #OklaEd
A3) I'm lucky as a Spanish teacher the best way to get my Ss speaking (in Spanish) is to talk about the thing they love most...THEMSELVES! haha. Sometimes I think I may know too much. But we have fun. #oklaed
A2 - I can think of a few. All of those mentors have one thing in common, they took time to reach out to really get to know me as a student or other students. They KNEW about me, not just my test scores or data. They LISTEN #OklaEd
A2) My Jr High and HS choir teacher at Choctaw, Debbie Gilliam (now), had a powerful impact on my life. Wouldn't be in education if it weren't for her. She built confidence in me and brought me out of my shell. #oklaed
A2: Ms. Keith is the reason I became a teacher. Mrs. Laubach is the reason why I mother everyone. My mother is the reason why I work and love people too much. #oklaed
A3: The only way to really know your kids is to talk to them. Listen to what they have to say, offer a shoulder an ear or a smile whatever it takes to show you care #oklaed
I agree we need Ss connected but when we leave that to the extras aren't we letting the core Ts off the hook. Deep relationships can happen in a math or history class that could be more impactful than in any activity. I think we should build culture instead of policy. #oklaed
A3 - This is simple - I ask. My Ss are from diverse backgrounds. We talk about their cultures. We read books by authors who look like them. They are represented in my classroom daily. #oklaed
A2: My HS sci teacher would give me articles on micro/genetics and let me do independent study on those subjects my Sr yr because there was no higher level class for them. I’ll never forget Theressa Rader #SequoyahClaremore#oklaed
#OklaEd A2: In high school, many of us were fortunate to have Coach Strein as our mathematics teacher. He was dedicated to challenge every student to maximize our math learning - and made a point at graduation to apologize to a number of us for not doing a better job!!!
A2 #oklaED
My 11th grade English teacher, Debbie Applegate - who took time to read/provide meaningful feedback on my creative writing. Oh, and way back, my 1st grade teacher who trusted me to take notes to the office for her (long before email or intercoms).
A3: I appreciate hearing about their story. What’s their “normal” and what is their value system. I try to find similarities & honor differences. Counseling needs to be contextual. #oklaed
My high school band director and beginning flute teacher was always my biggest cheerleader. He could always tell when I needed to be lifted up. It wasn’t uncommon for him to remind all of us we were “great people” and that’s not a compliment you’re used to in HS😆 #oklaed
A2. I had @jsynbrown for 4 classes in HS. He was one of my favs becuz he made learning fun w/milli vanilli days & walking around the school yelling carpe diem. When he gave us the Round Tuits, I knew how much he cared. Now that is something I do with my seniors. #OklaEd
A3: Last week, we began our Narrative Essay. I showed them a VH1 Behind the music clip, and my students got a Narrative Essay about my life; I walked them through the rubric. This week, I get to read about them. Shout out to the great @janeebaber for helping me use OAS 7 #oklaed
A2: I found out my father passed at school. My school counselor held me while my mother held my brother. I disconnected from my classes and my friends she brought me back from the brink. She texted me to tell me how proud she is of me tonight. She’s always been there. #oklaed
A2: @kriscoop80 and @Jenkins007 have such a way with students and connecting with them beyond the classroom. It’s really inspiring and drives me to be better! #OklaEd
I totally agree with your thoughts on core teachers. 100%
But if we can pull in a kiddo without a grade being attached to the thing - its something they want to try/do. Something that can build a love for the school and school community.
#Oklaed
A3) As admin, listen to them, to their parents, to community members. Attend events. Ask questions. Learn the traditions and cultures of the community. #oklaed
A3: I'm working on this, actually. I've revamped my class every year, but this year I left more time available for after I know what they're interested in. It's hard, though! #oklaed
A3: It all goes back to that relationship you build with them. Knowing your student and their family dynamic. Attending their events after hours. Don't just talk core subjects w/them. Talk life and interests. #oklaed
A3 - As a principal who was a former counselor, I try to use my counseling skills with students when doing discipline. I try turn poor decisions into a teachable moment. Helps me get to know my S's, which helps with the P's. I have had LOTS of parent meetings already. #oklaed
A3. I talk to them and go out in the community. But it helps the community is where I grew up too. Makes it so easy to connect when they talk about places and stuff. I lived through it. #OklaEd
A4 - This is my soapbox. The majority of my Ss don’t look like me. If I am not intentional about book choices, activity choices, my own understanding, developing empathy, valuing their voice, I will LOSE them! Who they are has to be the center of my classroom. #oklaed
A3 I ask them. Sometimes as part of a discussion, sometimes through a Google Form or a quickwrite. I try to incorporate their interests into what we are doing. It's amazing how much they are willing to help with this when you listen. I still need to work on this. #oklaed
A3) I ask them questions, but I make sure I listen to my students. They usually have something to say. Listening is key! I also do guidance lessons that give me an opportunity to learn more about them. #oklaed
A4: This one is hard but so important. Here we have to really know our kids. We need to know the messages they’ve heard, they’ve witnessed, and what we convey. A little easier with counseling when it’s one-on-one. #oklaed
A4 - I do not look like the majority of my Ss. I let them have a voice and choice. I also let them suggest music and other things to me. I seek authentic connection. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A1: Being connected across other classrooms and grades is important at our school. We use each other as buddy teachers and it really just helps kids take a break and get refocused. It helps with deescalation. #oklaed
JUST THIS WEEK, I made a huge breakthrough with a student. I used what I had learned about him to help him make a story. He went from unwilling to write a single letter to writing 4 sentences on his own. #oklaed
A3: Breakfast, Lunch, & after school pick up are the best ways 4 me as an administrator to tap into the lives of our kiddos. Good convos that help build relationships that can correlate to real world connections in classroom lessons & social expectations in the building. #Oklaed
That core class typically has as semester grade attached, right?
I’m not saying you can’t develop relationships with students in core classes. Which result in students feeling that sense of belonging.

A-3 I have taught in this district since 1976. I know many of the parents and grandparents as they are my former students. I understand many of their home situations. Today these problems have been compounded by new problems. Making connections has never been more needed.#oklaed
A2. I had @jsynbrown for 4 classes in HS. He was one of my favs becuz he made learning fun w/milli vanilli days & walking around the school yelling carpe diem. When he gave us the Round Tuits, I knew how much he cared. Now that is something I do with my seniors. #OklaEd
A4: I have to admit this is different for me. Most of my students are of color like me. This makes them feel very comfortable and sometimes they say inappropriate things. I have to work on them being sensitive to each other. #oklaed
A4) We work a lot on cultural understanding in my Spanish class. We have many discussions about heritage and cultural beliefs around the world in an effort to help open the Ss minds to understand and most importantly respect all of our differences. #oklaed
A2: the teachers i connected with were ones that i knew what their interests were. i'm not saying share all your personal life with your students but if they see some of your hobbies and interests it makes you more real to them as an actual person and not just a teacher! #oklaed
A4: I tie in the literature to their own lives; the literature may characters from different cultures, but their struggles are universal to everyone. I reinforce this all the time. #oklaed
A3: I try to bring their story into every aspect of the classroom. So many of my lessons ask them to share a part of themselves. If you care they will share. #oklaed
A4: I try and be a safe person for kids in my school. And call-in colleagues that may not understand the full picture. Start the important conversations. I'm one of few staff of color. I have to be their voice #oklaed
I’m suggesting thinking outside of the box to give students an opportunity to be involved in school in ways that are not dependent on any particular course core or elective.

#oklaed
p.s. I love this kind thought provoking back and forth. You Challenge me Todd!
A4: On Fridays, we watch the week in rap from Flocabulary and we discuss the news. This promotes diversity because it shows them issues nationally and internationally - which many have never considered before! #oklaed
#OklaEd A3: I would, we’re in a school system, attend student festivities - reaching out to families and citizens attending, live in the community, participate in community-based activities (including volunteer efforts).
A4 - Don’t be afraid to ask people how they feel and what they think. In the past, when P’s or S’s have told me that something was racially sensitive, I flat out asked them to explain what they meant/how they felt. Learn from others #oklaed
A3: making school apart of their lives, not just something that takes them away from their lives. learning and fun don't have to be separate but many of my students see it that way and just see school as something they HAVE to get through. i hope that i'm changing that. #oklaed
A5: explain things to them. If it doesn’t make enough sense to explain it to a kid, maybe you’re not making the right call 🤷🏻♀️ if it can be explained, students will understand it. Doesn’t mean they’ll love it, but they’ll see the fairness. #oklaed
A3: I always try to be in the hallway and greet families and students in the mornings when I can. This helps get to know people and let yourself be known. #oklaed
A2: I remember our phone was disconnected growing up&my elementary school principal Mr. Hinton drove2 our house to check on us. 👀My gym teacher Mr. P @SteedChargers also showed that he really cared by building relationships with us and holding us to high expectations! #oklaed
A5 - This is a hot button for people. Schools have to be a place where Ss can make mistakes & be offered redemption. We have to practice grace & unconditional love. Yes, we have to help them make good choices, but we also have to help them navigate hard things in life. #oklaed
A4: Empower your students by hearing every voice, ensuring your students, all students, see themselves in your classroom library. Integrating diverse work into your lessons. Every student should feel valued and represented. #oklaed
A5) Making sure the discipline is S-centered and growth centered and not merely punitive is key. Also, making sure it doesn't actually reinforce a behavior (ie: suspension - in or out for absences). #changebehavior#oklaed
A4 take time to learn about different cultures represented in the district/classrooms. It cannot be assumed that behaviors and actions while at school are all understood to be the same. #oklaED
A4: Our AP Lit motto: “We don’t just read dead white guys.” We have to be intentional about creating an environment that supports diversity not just in curriculum but by giving them choices as well. #oklaed
But I thought punishing students for not writing their name, turning things in right, homework, etc. IS teaching them responsibility/autonomy 😏 #oklaed
A5 - Not sure. I try to create a space where students know if something is wrong they can come to my room and chill before getting in trouble. I also encourage students to apologize to teachers in some instances. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A5: As the question suggests, discipline is about "teaching" rather than "punishing." This should be the aim of all schools when it comes to student behavior. #oklaed
#OklaEd A4: Easy to say but not so easy to do - find activities and even assignments that require multigenerational involvement and participation, most especially including classroom participation.
A5: Restorative justice! Realizing that maybe there’s not a right and wrong, but understanding where each side is coming from. Accountability for your own actions, and then identifying ways to insure the behavior is not repeated going forward. #oklaED
A4:I don’t share the same experiences/background as some of my students, but it’s up to me to use my resources to find out. Ask questions, seek a mentor. Keep learning. #oklaed
A5: I can’t expect them to control their emotions, if I can’t control my own. I try to model this. Have a discussion, then determine whether a conversation or consequence is needed. Goal is to get them to learn from the situation. #oklaed
A4: we gotta stay #woke and have those conversations that we've been too scared of having. acknowledging the disparities and the history of our city is hard but we have to do it to move on from it stronger together. #oklaed
This is why I provide pencils and other materials. I also talk to & listen to my students whenever they aren't doing what I think they should. I don't want to ever let something like a lack of pencil or sleep prevent a student from learning. #oklaed
A3: I eavesdrop. 😂 no, but really, it helps me to know what kinds of things they like to do. If I hear them talking about a game after school and I’m able to go, I go. #oklaEd
A4) This is something we have to be very purposeful about. Allowing students lessons or experiences which allow them to talk about themselves can be helpful. We are 30% NA so we do a variety of things to include various tribes and their culture. Intentionality 🗝. #oklaed
A6: let your kids talk to each other. Your students should know everyone’s name and something about them. Make time for it. Again, morning meetings are perfect. Let them talk as they work, and work together. #oklaed
A6- Man...It’s relationships. All day long. I would say about 85% of my students have ACE scores higher than 3 (based on their stories). I just love them hard. That’s all I can do. #oklaed
On this note, I’m currently building my class library so if you have any book suggestions on this particular topic, send them my way! #oklaed#diversebooks
A4: Stay up with topics that are relevant on social media. It’s how our kids get their info these days. Listen to what makes them tick & what gets their blood hot. Don’t pretend to walk in their shoes, but empathize with them, and let them know you’re in the bunker w/them! #oklaed
A5: Letting students know that you're not going to give up on them. Doing restorative conversations, letting them build relationships with other adults in the building, putting a focus on learning and working together instead of compliance. #oklaed
A6 - I try to get new students connected to groups. I also will go sit by a student that is by themselves in the morning or at lunch. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A5 - We need to practice procedures, OVER & OVER & OVER. TEACH expectations When S's misbehave, find a way to teach them how to make better choices and try to keep them in the classroom. When S’s miss class for ISS and Suspension, they are not learning. #oklaed
A6: also, take time to notice kids you think are isolated and make a plan to connect them to kids you know they could easily connect with. Have those students in for lunch with you. I love doing that. #oklaed
Holy smokes - If I can make my classroom a safe space. One where failure is not frowned on. Where I can make each student feel like they want to be there…I think I can do a lot…#oklaed
A4: I read books that show all shapes, sizes, and colors of families. I am careful to validate that experience, even if no one in my class has lived it. #oklaEd
A6: give students opportunities to talk! i can't stress this enough. students need time to interact with each other in all diff sorts of social settings. that includes when they're working and playing. #oklaed
A4: On the first day of school I give the “judgement free zone” speech and talk about how my room is a place for all walks of life regardless of who they are, in my room they are loved, valued, and accepted. I work with my kids to ensure that everyone is equal and valued. #oklaed
A6: Labs, activities, group stuff we mix it up we switch around and I can not stress enough the value of laughter and story time. We have fun, we leave no one out. We build a classroom family...it's what we do #oklaed
A6) If my Ss see me stepping out of the box and having fun with certain things, they’ll follow. Too, I try to attend as many functions as possible so they see I’m connected. #oklaed
A6: My Ss write in their journals 3-4 days per week and I read everything they write. We have entire conversations in their journals that bring us closer than a lot of the verbal discussions in class. #oklaed
A6 - all this talk of “connectedness” makes me think of #tlap “If your students chose what class they could go to, would they choose you?” When S’s know you care and trust you, they want to learn from you. #relationships#oklaed
A6: There are countless opportunities for students to participate in at DCHS. We try to model serving as much as possible. Yesterday’s “Big Event” is a great example, we try to find at least one extracurricular for students to plug in to. #oklaed
A5: For me in my classroom relationships are more important than discipline. My focus is on that and I haven’t given a detention since my first year teaching and I think there is a direct correlation. If you are more concerned about behavior than kids you lose them. #oklaed
A6 Make the classroom a safe place...encourage conversations and the building of relationships. Celebrate together...recognized differences...and learn and grow from them. #OklaEd
A6: Have lunch w/said students and invite them to invite a friend. If they don't have one to invite, invite someone you think they may connect with. This is another thing to consider when grouping Ss in class. Be proactive for isolated Ss. They need our help. #oklaed
A5 You do have to tell them the correct way to act because its possible no one has every done that. The very best way to teach them how is through your own behavior. Kids always notice if you are fair and don't have favorites. You always need to follow your own rules. #oklaed
Just like a test, we do well when we study.. we can constantly show our students what doing the right thing looks like long before the “test”. We must be proactive in our approach to discipline and give our S’s the answers to the test before they ever take it! #oklaed
#OklaEd A5:First thought: Discipline that’s imposed but is really ‘offending’ student is contributing in a positive way to the betterment of the school, its students, and the community. AND not intended to be embarrassing most of all.
A6- Man...It’s relationships. All day long. I would say about 85% of my students have ACE scores higher than 3 (based on their stories). I just love them hard. That’s all I can do. #oklaed
A7 - I am letting my AP Econ Ss make a class podcast this year. This last week I had 8 students present a Federalist/Anti-Federalist debate for the whole school. I give them opportunities to shine. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A7 - They have choice on most things we do. They share stories. They write legislators. We are getting them registered to vote. We are showing them that they deserve a seat at the table! #oklaed
A6. Show them the importance of relationships. Relationships with each other. Relationships with me. And relationships amoung the teachers. They all know my BFFs in the school! #OklaEd
A6) Listening again is key. Finding an adult to connect with is important. Follow up with them. #oklaed Trauma isn't a one time conversation fix...it's ongoing.
A6 - all this talk of “connectedness” makes me think of #tlap “If your students chose what class they could go to, would they choose you?” When S’s know you care and trust you, they want to learn from you. #relationships#oklaed
A5: This is huge! For one, I don’t agree with one size fits all consequences. We need to know the motivation behind the behavior (the need that isn’t met) in order to help the S make a better choice the next time. Talking through feelings and actions with Ss is key. #oklaEd
A7: I'm trying to implement more community building activities into my class so my Ss know what is around and available. A local group even scores my Ss huge research PBL project! #oklaed
A7 I remind students that they have a voice, and that I am providing them with tools they need to use that voice. I tell them that what they have to say is important & I listen so that they can see that. Again, I still need to work on getting better about this. #oklaED
A7: Made me automatically think of @kriscoop80 and her STUCO/Leadership kids. She is so good at giving them ownership of activities and their school. I love that! #oklaed
A4: Stay up with topics that are relevant on social media. It’s how our kids get their info these days. Listen to what makes them tick & what gets their blood hot. Don’t pretend to walk in their shoes, but empathize with them, and let them know you’re in the bunker w/them! #oklaed
A5) Fresh Starts every single day go a long way w Ss. As. Bldg Admin I sometimes would ask a S - “so what do you think should be a consequence for this situation?” Consistency is huge and New Mercies every day go a long way w Ss. Take the time to discuss w Ss. Not just 🔨 #oklaed
A6: During morning meeting, Ss go around and greet each other by name. They also have a day of the week they get to ‘share’. Each student gets to answer 3 questions about their share and then we thank them for sharing. #Oklaed
Once you give your students some choices in how they can show off what they have learned - their voice will be in there. #edtech makes it easier to do now than 20 years ago. #Oklaed
A7: Go sit in on a @DelCityEagles student leadership meeting. And take notes! 👀 @DelCityStuCo Seriously, Socratic seminary style questions for students to address the needs of your school. The kids know what they need. ASK them. 👌🏾 #oklaED
A7: At the kinder level it starts with breaking the tattle habit. My littles use their voices to express how another person's actions/inaction affected them #oklaed
A7: Let them lead!! Many of our student activities are student-led from beginning to end. Teaching students they have a voice is only half of the process, we must listen and let them lead. #oklaed
A6: We don’t “cut” anybody on our team.. we welcome all students that are willing to buy into our culture. We offer a family to all at Del City HS. We try to maintain a safe and positive environment among our family that promotes growth mentally, physically, and socially. #oklaed
Q2 - After my father passed away, my mother received story after story from past students about how he paid for their basketball shoes, or paid off their lunch accounts. Not even my mom knew. I learned not just to listen to students but to ACT on their behalf #Oklaed
A6: I teach my Ss to be honest about their feelings with each other. I don’t let them “apologize” and move on. I have the other S tell them how it made them feel, and give suggestions for what would have felt better so if it comes up again, they have tools to do better. #oklaEd
Of course. But how we protect students and teach the offending students can be done with restorative practices! But Admin needs the freedom and supports to do so! #oklaED
Foster a collaborative learning environment and culture that is evident throughout your local school from the admin and school board to the classroom. #OklaEd
A6: relationships! relationships! relationships! Helping to foster a family attitude, I tell my kids that we start the year as a class but by the end of year they will be a family. Some scoff but at most see each other as family when it’s all done. #oklaed
A7: giving students a feeling of ownership in their own learning and a way for them to be able to communicate with you. even a respectful way to disagree with you if it comes to that. be willing to listen to POVs and experiences that might be diff than yours #oklaed
A7: When we invited candidates into our class last year students ran the discussions. They felt empowered personally but also connected to their power that the future we have been preparing them for is NOW. #oklaed
A7 Classroom... lots of collaboration, sharing work in class and digitally. Tech Team...S leaders share learning via presentation and in class assistance. #OklaEd
A8 Revising is more than just one step of the writing process. I expect my Ss to revise any assignment they (or I!) think they can do better. Mistakes are no big deal, and students learn the second time around! https://t.co/mBcMN7YebX#oklaED
A8: I teach AP and Pre AP classes. They are HARD. But we struggle together! If you get it help someone who doesn't, if none of us get it we look it up and figure it out together, every mistake or failure is an opportunity to learn! #oklaed
A6: Using conscious discipline, not shaming or calling out negative behaviors in front of other Ss, and allowing a natural consequence for unwanted or undesirable behaviors. Also, helping Ss learn and feel empathy for their fellow Ss ie: using a 4-step apology. #OklaEd#EIPT3043
Thanks. Sometimes I wonder whether I meet the "real" student better in class or in their journals! It's amazing how many times the two don't seem to mesh. But they remember my quick responses in their journal for a lot longer than anything we do in class! #oklaed
A8: weekly awards! just quick check ins on fridays for who is growing, who is improving, who gets the keep the quote that week. my students have been really motivating each other and encouraging just from the little celebrations on friday. #oklaed
A7: I’ve been using science as way to give Ss more choice. Even though the framework of the lessons is set, I’m venturing into letting them decided where we go with it. They have great Qs and ideas. So far so good! #oklaed
A8: I congratulate them even if they do not succeed, for effort means something. Even when they make mistakes, I remind that they are still making progress. #oklaed
#OklaEd A6: How about teachers, administrators, and staff members inviting randomly selected students to join them for lunch or join them to select / do something to improve the school - building connections among all (not just students) that allow connections to begin?
A8 - There are posters all over my walls about failing forward and using failure as an opportunity for growth. Shoot, I have an entire wall painted about this! Also, I try to empower by giving Ss multiple ways to demonstrate understanding. #oklaed
I tell my college pre-service teachers to take a risk when they teach a lesson. Will they be graded yes. The bigger the risk the better the grade. I’m all about learning through failure. I hope my students get this.
#oklaed

Having students set goals, given they know the continuum and where they are on it. Then celebrate progress - we never give up on them but we need to never let them give up on themselves. We must instill grit - tenacity- dust off - keep moving - fail fwd - #oklaed
A8) The always awesome @jjofarley has a Fail Board in her STEM classroom, a place to recognize that mistakes are not just ok but inevitable! She contributes some herself too! #oklaed
A8: Mistakes are simply opportunities to learn. Meet the students where they are at and walk along side of them during their journey. It’s ok to fail, it’s part of the process, how you respond to it is key. #oklaed
A8) We recognize S achievements at our once a month assemblies. It can be Athletics, academics, or by organization. We also do longhorn trailblazers each month. That is something our Ts do to identify Ss w/character. It reaches more people than just the “smart” ones. #oklaed
I tell my college pre-service teachers to take a risk when they teach a lesson. Will they be graded yes. The bigger the risk the better the grade. I’m all about learning through failure. I hope my students get this.
#oklaed
I also tell my pre-service teachers that I want to see growth. I see where you are when you come in that first day of class. I want to compare that on your last day in my class. Most end an entire solar system away from where they started. #oklaed
Not only are we proud to show them off, we also know it makes them better young men when they go out and connect with the community. It’s a win win for all! #oklaed
A8: my class is performance based and I tell them, “if one of us looks silly then we all look silly!” Celebrate the failures even because in the failure we still see what their process was and we now know how to correct it to ensure success later. #oklaed
A8 Set the stage...we’re all learning, we’ll make mistakes, and that’s okay! Share mistakes and recognize them as stepping stones to learning...celebrate the journey. Recognized that no 2 Ss will have the same journey. #OklaEd
A8: Being vulnerable in my own mistakes, especially while I’m learning. I always appreciated when teachers acknowledged their mess ups. The other day a student told me, “it’s okay Miss Shields, you’re still learning to be a teacher!” #shesnotwrong#oklaed
A8 I tell them if you make a 100 in everything, you're not learning anything new. You already knew it. Learning something new is a stretch and a challenge. Expect to make mistakes while you are learning. #oklaed
A8) Learning is a process and its continual. Celebrate growth and where they've made progress - both academically and behaviorally/socially. Admit when we make mistakes. Display our own learning. #oklaed
A9 - We have started something called “Patriot Nation” this year where we are working towards making sure everyone has a place, understands their value, and respects one another. We are also, collectively, working on a new mission statement for our school. #oklaed
A8: On anything that I’ve found a way, I allow students to start where they are instead of expecting them to be all at the same level. I talk about how we all have things we are good at and things we are not so good at, so it doesn’t do any good to compare to someone else #oklaEd
A8: It's important for me as their teacher to own my mistakes in front of them. To not pretend it didn't happen. I model how to make a mistake and how it's okay, and how to learn from it. #oklaed
A8) For some reason, eighth graders like stars...the old fashioned kind that are different colors of foil. When they improve, do well, or ace a quiz, they get a star, and they place it on an index card with a date. I know it’s corny, but they remind me about giving them. #oklaed
A9: I would like for ALL Ts to follow all the District rules so those of us who do are not seen as being mean. That would go a long way in getting Ss to feel connected and not forget expectations that change class to class! #oklaed
A9: I love Admins are seen around the building regularly. My husband believes in this strongly. He takes his laptop to classrooms & works. Is in the hall constantly. He wants to be connected all day long. #oklaed
A9: I work with those teachers I consider to be marigolds. Together, we are unstoppable when it comes to building student connection. Showing up to their birthday parties dressed formally also builds cohesion among everyone! #oklaed
I love this!!! Grit!! Can’t remember the name of the book, but it basically said that people who succeed in life, do so because of GRIT, regardless of what they go through. The book was about what makes students successful. #oklaed
A8: Giving high fives! I try to praise all achievements, even little things like snapping their pants for the first time. I comment how hard they are working to learn something new and tell them how proud I am that they didn’t give up. #OklaEd#EIPT3043
A8 - One is with my Sophomore AP. I am the class sponsor and she is very supportive and there to help in any way. It is impactful for the Ss to see the Admin care as much as the Ts. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A9: I believe it’s everyone’s responsibility that no one goes unnoticed. The students are watching how the adults treat each other just like we watch them. Be the change! #oklaed
A9) We have mentorship classes. Our HS Ss spend time at the elem. We have a few committees to increase opps and come up with ideas. Looking to develop Sr/Fr mentor groups to develop connectedness in the HS. #oklaed
Also, tap-in, tap-out. Not always in crisis, but maybe for fun too! Guest teach across the hall, or take over a few of a neighbor’s responsibility. Show willingness to walk in others’ shoes!! #oklaED
#OklaEd A8: As often as was practical, I allowed as much time on ‘timed’ tests and enabling assignment resubmission as well as no grades on them. If today, I’d strive to eliminate grades with students giving input used by me to assign course grades.
A9: I LOVE seeing cross grade leadership. We just started book buddies with kindergarteners. It’s amazing how Ss disposition changes when they are the ‘big kid.’ #oklaed
A9: I think when we stand in the hall during passing period and talk to kids even ones we don't have and we joke with each other and defend one another and laugh and share I think WE the Ts build the community and adopt our kids into our A hall family #oklaed
A8: I own my mistakes and reward risks! We collaborate so much in my classes and I try to reward growth/innovation rather than standard grading. #oklaed
A10 - A year ago I was there. I had moved to move of a student centered approach and group work over lecture. I felt it was harder to connect. I reached out to former Ss and asked what made the connection with them strong. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A10: By not being too hard on yourself, and not taking anything personally. Give every student a clean slate each day, and always assume good motive. #oklaed
A9 - I have 3 churches who are currently supporting my school. One has built a gaga ball pit, one is bringing new chairs for many of my staff, the other does lots of nice things like ice cream for the staff etc. Hopefully this will be 1 thing to help me with T retention. #oklaed
A9: I work closely with NHS, STUCO, and the other fine arts programs to help my kids feel more like they belong at DCHS. This year for our howdy week there was a musical dress up day and my kids were elated! #oklaed

A10) Honestly, I try to see the student in a different atmosphere. Maybe they play a sport, sing, or go to my church. This helps me get over my defeated feeling. Too, when I call parents, it helps me see a different light. #oklaed
A10: I lean on my crew. I'm lucky to be surrounded by great friends and colleagues and I get to work with both of my daughters. I love my job, my school and my peeps. #oklaed
A8: It's important for me as their teacher to own my mistakes in front of them. To not pretend it didn't happen. I model how to make a mistake and how it's okay, and how to learn from it. #oklaed
A9: At my school we are definitely a family. We ALL work together as a unit to ensure all Ss feel connected, feel valued. There isn't one person at my school who wouldn't help me with a student if I needed it. That culture is so important for the Ss to see as well. #oklaed
This is something we are working on district wide and is embedded in our 5 year CSI plan, engagement/connectedness w all stakeholders. We have launched several things but much more to come - Wolves Way, intramurals, various clubs, etc. #oklaed
#OklaEd A7: In classroom and community, encourage students to engage and, most importantly, acknowledge as well as publicize ideas generated / efforts made / outcomes achieved.
A10: @BreneBrown says “if you aren’t in the arenagetting your but kicked, you don’t get an opinion.” As long as I’m trying, and I’m supported by real authentic people, I am 👌🏼Also, rest. I always need rest. #oklaed
We also seek out community partnerships to help supplement resources whenever we can’t find what a student needs. Kiwanis, Rotary, chamber of commerce, etc.. Athletic sponsors and alumni. You have to be proactive in your approach and we do a great job of that at DCHS! #oklaed
Elizabeth, this has been a great chat. I know I need to improve in some of the areas you presented, so I thank you for helping me become a better teacher. #oklaed
A9: At Del City HS we have an amazing leadership team, plus staff, that makes up a culture of acceptance, love, and high expectations. We know we deal with things that other schools might look at as “challenges”, but we see them as OPPORTUNITIES to affect lives!
#oklaed A9 It takes being willing to step out of comfort zone and ask parents if they need help when you see a problem. Ts have to know they can ask. Many Ps just want to know you care. Best for kids.
A10B - Sometimes student connection is tough even when present. I had a situation like that this week with a student facing a tough situation. I cried most of my 30 min drive home because of it. #oklaed#MDubLearns
A10: Those times make me feel like a failure, so I have to keep reminding myself that it's not failure until I totally give up. By never giving up, it can be exhausting, but it's not yet a failure! Semantics, but it makes me feel better! #oklaed
A10) Find the positives in each day. Love on my family. Get out of the office and into classrooms so I can see awesome things going on in the bldg. Love on my family some more. #oklaed
I’m working on this this semester - I have a hard time assigning a hard grade when learning is so messy. Don’t be on open mouth breather though - give me something to work with. Then improve with feedback. #oklaed
A10: I take a step back and reevaluate what it hindering me from connecting. I also try to not beat myself up over it and remind myself that everyday is a new day with new chances to connect. #oklaed
A10: My co-workers and I meet at The Mont and talk it out, talk about strategies to reach them better. We also have monthly happy hours for all faculty. It's important for us to stay connected with like minded people. We never stop learning. #oklaed
A10) It took me a year to post it on my blog after writing it, but I had one big connection fail that I processed through writing and sharing with the hope that others choose to connect rather than what I did. So for what it's worth https://t.co/kgHnw2BwIp#oklaed
This is one I am still learning! My first two years my first instinct was to discipline, then find out why the behavior was happening. One month in to school and I can already see how switching those two is creating rapport with my students 🙌🏼 #oklaed
A10: Remember those times you did feel like you made a difference! And podcasts. Podcasts are so much of my self-care. #oklaed "Your life is always moving in the direction of your strongest thoughts"
Thank you to @ElizabethS_OK! We are so thankful to have her at OSDE! Our agency is here to help. We love our work and it shows—thanks to @joy4ok. Everyone have a GREAT week loving on your kids. ♥️ #oklaed
Young people are no different from adults in that they want to feel welcomed and acknowledged. As an educator, you have the power to positively impact their day simply by greeting students at the door. #oklaedhttps://t.co/EXhUaLISSh
Thank you @ElizabethS_OK for moderating the chat tonight. Even questions I don’t answer I always read the educators responses! I appreciate that you do these every week. #oklaed
