Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Hi #ksedchat! I'm Heather, a 6th grade teacher from Neodesha and your host for the evening! My fav summer recharge is my annual Beaver Lake family getaway in July! I can't wait to chat and reflect on all the awesomeness you do in your classrooms! Let's reflect and goal set!
Nathan here!! Just graduated from Wichita State, with my elementary education degree. Best way for me to recharge is to spend time with family and friends. #ksedchat

A1) Will Dunn from Tonganoxie (HS math). We always take an extended trip back to Michigan. Fair temperatures. Clean lake swimming. ~600 family members... #ksedchat
Randall Rank, elementary assistant principal in Buhler schools (new role this coming year). I like to spend time with family, friends, and catch up on some things I wasn’t able to do during the school year. #ksedchat
Howdy! I’m Hannah, elementary principal in Neodesha. My fav summer recharge is having no agenda, spending time at the pool, and traveling. Looking forward to a Colorado vaca in July. #ksedchat

Hey #ksedchat!
Tim Vesco, 4th Grade Teacher.
Frontenac, KS
I’m actually joining in from a mini-vacation in Bowling Green, Kentucky! Spent the day at @BeechBendPark!
Azure, 3rd-grade teacher from Derby. I will be spending lots of time with my daughter before she heads off to college and enjoy catching up on some reading for school and for fun! At least until Monday, when my I start my classes for my masters. #ksedchat
A1: While I was impressed with my Ss academic success, I was more impressed with their relationships with each other. We truly developed a sense of family within our classroom through our highly anticipated daily class meetings. #ksedchat
A1: I feel like our greatest successes were that there was absolutely no turn over in Ss, in either of the PreK classes, this year, which is practically unheard of! This allowed for us to build a tight-knot, cohesive classroom community that was incredibly successful! #ksedchat
A1: Students were engaged more and working together as a community at the end of the school year. This was the best ending of a school year I’ve had! #ksedchat
A1) My seniors' community service was off the charts this year! More than 200 boxes of cereal donated for comm. food baskets, more than 150 sets of new books and PJS for children, more than 300 items for foster care bags, more than 2000 scent circles for the NICU. #ksedchat
Q1: As a principal I want my students to feel welcomed, safe, excited, and eager to learn. Overall that was a success, with teachers helping drive the positive culture. #ksedchat
A1: I incorporated "Foodie Friday" to help develop independent skills for a VI student, but all of my kiddos in the class had successes in basic movements needed, working cooperatively, & success in trying new foods #ksedchat
Sorry, friends! Running late. I was attending a couple of my students' t-ball game. SO FUN!!
I recharge by doing things on my own time schedule and not someone else's. #ksedchat

#ksedchat Hi, I am Brad and I teach K-5 music in @USD409Atchison . I am with the @KTOYTEAM2018 in Belton, Texas. My favorite way to recharge is to go walking, play the piano / listen to music, and read...
A2: I might be off base @heather_newkirk but I think it would be our new science curr. Just the learning curve of new curr and the delay in being trained. Rigor was a step up too but that’s a good thing! #ksedchat
When your Grandma calls you in the middle of you hosting #ksedchat 🙈👵🏻😬😳 ..”yes, Grandma, we’ll bring the kids up on Saturday to the farm.” Gosh, I love her. Thank goodness for @TweetDeck! 🙌🏼
A2: Perimeter of rectilinear figures....deer in headlights the entire time! Poor 3rd-grade babies! I have to adjust adjust adjust in the future! #ksedchat
A2 my students struggled most with using the standard algorithm (SA) for long division. We had used other strategies the entire school year, so introducing them to the SA caused quite the confusion. #ksedchat
A2: Biggest struggle for majority of caseload was writing a cohesive paragraph. Either with coming up with ideas, staying on topic, conventions, or having most of it & going back to writing a sentence per line. #ksedchat
A2: My Ss tend to struggle when things do not easily come to them or when they can’t finish the task immediately. This is a struggle due to social/emotional needs & past experiences. We teach them to persevere and that it’s OK if the task takes a week, or longer. #ksedchat
A2: math I would say place value. If they don’t understand the basic millions, ten thousands etc, then moving to decimals and tenths and thousandths etc is such a struggle 🙈 and writing! #ksedchat
A2: I am blessed that PreK is still all about exposure to different experiences. So to say that anyone struggled with a particular unit of study is not a problem for us! #ksedchat
A1) The greatest success of my students (both MS & HS) was that we had several state places in our CTSOs. In our MS robotics, they placed 6th, 7th, & 8th. In HS SkillsUSA we had several place at 1st, 5th, 6th, 16th in several events with several students over KS. Proud! #ksedchat
Q2: #KSedchat Writing in general can be a struggle, but my students have a really hard time with revision. They don’t want to revise, or struggle to make changes that are actual improvements vs. changes for the sake of changes
I would say the biggest struggled with unit was Design/Engineering. This unit includes a focus on Problem Solving and the Design Process. I taught differently second semester, which included these concepts in every lesson, because these concepts are in everyday life! #ksedchat
A3: I do! After 33 years, I've gotten pretty good at separating the two. To make next year even better, not that the board has approved it, I am moving to a new school district!! #ksedchat
A3 this past year I was in college to finish my degree. With that came a poor balance of work/personal life. This upcoming school year I plan to make time for my hobbies and loved ones. #ksedchat
A3: no I didn’t have a good work/personal life balance. One of my biggest struggles currently. I’m very passionate and all in when it comes to work and unfortunately my family takes the hit sometimes. #ksedchat
A3) Had a good balance between work/personal. I completed my masters this year in Tech Ed, and am pursuing my EdS this next year. My wife actually enjoys what I teach and helps me out immensely. So there is a mix of work/personal. She helps me achieve my goals! #ksedchat
A3: Go in early and try to stay ahead to keep paperwork & planning at school, try to have a 30 minute period (exercise, do some chores around house) before getting kids from daycare. I want my 2 toddlers to get my best, not leftovers from day. Work in progress #ksedchat
A3: Let’s be honest, NO I don’t have a good work/personal life balance. I can get too hyper focused on work so my goal next year would be to try to turn off work at certain times. #myhubbywouldlikethat#ksedchat
A3: some weeks were good, others weren’t. So maybe that’s balance...? Toddlers at home kind of demand the attention, so sometimes I was forced to turn off school brain. Which is probably an ok thing #KSedchat
A3: Balancing personal lfe and school life is hard. I have tried to do better, but I feel like a get behind when I don't bring things home. It's a fine line we walk. #ksedchat
A4: unsure of this answer with my new job... probably would have to go with taking Work home. But in my new role I need to be open to some stuff outside of school, parent, teacher, and student needs. #ksedchat
A3) I gave up the work/personal life balance struggle. I was tired of feeling guilty all the time for giving one area more attention than the other when one area needed it more. @casas_jimmy#Culturize totally changed things for me. #LifeFit#ksedchat
A4: Next year I would like to do less passing back huge stacks of graded papers all at once. I need to do better at getting feedback returned in a timely manner. I get distracted and forget to pass back papers day after day #ksedchat
A4: Comparing, mainly myself to where I think I should be but also schools, teachers, students, etc. Instead of seeing something and saying I wish...make it a reality. #ksedchat
I do love when I have a Google Form! I need to do more. It helps with my feedback/passing back papers problem too, since they can see feedback immediately #KSedchat
A5) I am going to allow my MS students to choose the order of how my units are taught. My first three units (Safety, Measurement and Design/Engineering) will remain the same and in that order. But, I will allow them to choose how they want to learn the remaining units. #ksedchat
A5: I would really like to implement an elem student council. I want our students voices to feel valued and teach them how to share their opinions respectfully. #ksedchat
A5: Well, this full-day PreK thing is going to be a new experience, so I'll go with that. Figuring out the schedule, the rest time, and all the ins and outs of a new school district. Everything is going to be new! #ksedchat
A5: still thinking, but I want to do more to celebrate reading. Thinking of a special day once a month to share book suggestions with each other, have guest readers, and introduce genre of the month. No firm plans yet, still processing from @nErDCampKS last week #ksedchat
