#leadupchat focuses on school leadership broadly, culture, changing paradigms, and the growth mindset. It's an Ed movement focused on Leadership, Culture, Growth and Shifts on Saturdays at 8:30am CST, founded by Jeff Veal (@heffrey) and Nathan Lang (@nalang1).
#leadupchat Q1: What is something you did (or saw a colleague do) that was unsolicited that brightened everyone's spirits in these last days/weeks leading to Spring Break? (Someone else take Q2!)
I ended the week meeting with teachers who are using Chrome-Carts in their rooms. They made of list of the way their instructional practice has changed. #InspiredByThem#leadupchat
I often think I am not making a difference, so it meant the world to me to have 2 Ts on my team tell me that my support and advocacy for them during their first year made a difference to them. #leadupchat
This one hit close to home: Our daughter will be getting her master's in Social Work this spring. She called to see if I had any proven practices I use in my classroom for meeting the needs of Ss from trauma. Her prof. LOVED her presentation! #leadupchat
Last week our best practices committee hosted a faculty book tasting, and this week it spread to 3 classrooms, including our self-contained room who did a Seuss-themed tasting for #ReadAcrossAmerica#leadupchat
My favorite nudge came when a district administrator told me I needed to be a Principal. That thought was nowhere on my radar and literally changed my professional trajectory. #leadupchat
We had a busy week with a storm, staff not able to make it, lots going on. I only had to say what needed to be covered and everyone just filled in the gaps. #pdale#leadupchat
Spring cleaning of my Twitter, shifting username to @GrantLearns to allow for a more personal platform & advocacy. I’ve opened up @NPMMVWeLab on a separate account to showcase the awesome learning ongoing in our #VWeLabs. Never imagined a Twitter PLN would share such learning.
No chat, no problem! Let’s create-our-own #leadupchat this AM! Q1: What’s on your plate right now as a professionally hungry educator? Me? Making micro-credentialing a pathway to re-licensure in KS!
A1: Had a great opportunity to lead on an Edcamp style PD and have teachers asking me from other schools to come see what they are doing in their class that they learned in my sessions. #leadupchat#leadupchatgonerogue
We set up our MC w/tables and dumped professional and YA books in the center. Ts traveled to groups, sampling the books and adding them to their "menu" plan. #leadupchat
Mine ended with #WildcatCorridor Ts from high school and elem finalizing a plan to support one another to build student centered learning. Ss from @ElCaminoHighSch coming to demonstrate their knowledge @IRaCoyote 5th and 3rd graders working on #genius Hour #leadupchat
In reply to
@DKriedeman, @marcihouseman, @latoyadixon5, @ElCaminoHighSch, @IRaCoyote
Great for so many types of conversations! I've used it with data conversations--stay low on the ladder of inference until you see everything that is to be seen in the data...no assumptions...no questions. See the full data story--then move on to what we are wondering. #leadupchat
@ColinESeale, tweeting for #thinkLaw where we help Ts teach #criticalthinking to all students using real-life legal cases. My biggest nudge is thinking about the kids that do everything right and still can't break through. That's what keeps me going! #leadupchat
No chat, no problem! Let’s create-our-own #leadupchat this AM! Q1: What’s on your plate right now as a professionally hungry educator? Me? Making micro-credentialing a pathway to re-licensure in KS!
#leadupchat I like to "nudge" people towards their purpose. Many times Ts come to me confused about which way to go but once they define their purpose the way forward becomes clear.
Forming a relationship, getting to know a S, their families, their community would assist with some of it, if you understand how a 'system' works, it won't be so hard to rebel. #LeadUpChat | I'm a P, done studies only and work in classrooms.
It's all about the "why." Ask Ss to discuss their path towards "success." When they come up with their own strategies, there's usually a lot of overlap with what I would call "desired behavior." Then all you have to do is hold them up to their own standard! #leadupchat
We just had a great conversation on micro-credentialing in #utedchat Wednesday night. Love the fact that we are discussing differentiation for adult learners the way we historically have for students. #leadupchat
A1 Favorite nudge...recognizing the positive and “wondering” how to spread it around. I’ve had some great leaders do this with/for me. Non threatening...focused on the good happening all around us. #Leadupchat
Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime #EduGladiators#leadupchat
And YA books mostly straight off the #ProjectLITbookclub list, with some fantasy add-ons. I did a great booktalk about The 57 Bus and The Chaos Walking series, several Ts walked out w/ books for their own reading life! #leadupchat
A1: number 1 in my plate. Creating An ABS (Academic and Behavior Strategist) credential filled with the micro credential levels from within. All for Special Education. #leadupchat Dallas TX
Don't you love it when we see a culture of transparency? --come visit my classroom--see what I'm doing--here are my growth goals--can you give me feedback on the progress I am making towards my goals? #leadupchat
There are 7 Days in a week & someday isn’t one of them! Let’s go! Motivate. Elevate. Take flight and push yourself to new heights. Don’t wait, LEAD! See it, believe it, & make it happen! The time is now! #relentless#satchat#EduGladiators#leadupchat#leadlap#believe
Our 4th grade teachers did this recently to introduce different genres. The kids loved it! They all wanted me to come “taste” when I walked into the room! #leadupchat
Hi all, how do you balance demands from district admin and lead teachers at a school site who feel overwhelmed by too much innovation / change happening at once? Where's the slow cooker? Feels like a pressure cooker to some , an insta pot to others. 🤣 #leadupchat#LeadLAP
I read "The Brain that Changes Itself." Ss & Ts need to understand they can self-regulate: not just response, but also their own feelings. Powerful! #leadupchat
A2. I’m very interested in the responses of educators because it is an indication of how we define success in our work. Ready to hear your thoughts on this tribe #leadupchat
A2: Hard to see my impact many times bc I'm a consultant who comes and goes. However have seen several teachers this year using ideas I shared w them. Makes my heart sing! #leadupchat
Education is traditionally a deficit model, we tell them what they can’t do. Flip that into a strengths based model. And teach skills which are needed for success in live not just the next level of school. #leadupchat
I like it. Also, I’ve noticed that when you let students/players have input on rules, consequences, etc that they often are more strict than you would have been. And more likely to by in
#leadupchat
#leadupchat A2: externally, you don't know unless others change or tell you that it mattered. Intrinsically, if it matters to you that you at least tried.....then it matters.
Q2: My friend and colleague @KennedymMelissa lets her school culture be her barometer! What’s it say? How’s it feel? What does it vehemently fight for? She’s rocking it at #BGSlearn! #LeadUpChat
A2 I know i've had impact when Ts thank me for the support that helped them grow, but also when I see changes in the classroom that translate to student growth. #leadupchat
A1. My kids and I left messages on cars few weeks ago;). Great pick me up for staff- left little finger lights for kiddos around school for student body;). I’ve also brought breakfast for staff or just given notes thanking them for making a difference in OUR kids

A2 Growth is a good indicator of impact. Teacher and student. Also, those small moments that might be a huge jump in a relationship with families. Sometimes as simple as them being around when they weren't before. #leadupchat
No chat, no problem! Let’s create-our-own #leadupchat this AM! Q1: What’s on your plate right now as a professionally hungry educator? Me? Making micro-credentialing a pathway to re-licensure in KS!
A2: I think everyday our work matters. When our work as a whole becomes part of the culture and not an artifact of our presence, we know we left an impact. #leadupchat
#leadupchat We can't always make algebra relevant to the immediate lives of Ss. Don't fool yourself. But what we CAN make relevant is the process of learning. If THAT is the goal, then things like homework and asking questions and being a voice in the class become automatic.
In reply to
@MrDougCampbell, @LaneWalker2, @DKriedeman
Part of the pblm is that Ts are often too busy to know what they don't know. (don't read ASCD, EdWeek...) But I suspect well-explained opts would help. #leadupchat
A: "You just won't be able to reach some kids." What kind of teacher would I be if I thought that way? This, from two different administrators...#leadupchat
Have immaculate lesson plans. The structure begins with me and if I have anticipated what might happen I’m able to be more flexible. If Ss are engaged management takes care of itself. #LeadUpChat
Absolutely...leadership is a mindset, not a title. And seeking to be a leader is about seeking impact. How are our words and actions having a positive impact on teaching and learning? Thanks Laura! #leadupchat
In reply to
@LauraGilchrist4, @PrincipalSmart, @latoyadixon5
A2. We can see this in the classroom when teachers are free to make decisions based on student needs and Best Practices. We also see it when students take on leadership roles. #leadupchat
A2. I’m very interested in the responses of educators because it is an indication of how we define success in our work. Ready to hear your thoughts on this tribe #leadupchat
I've been trying to reevaluate the way I teach skills in literacy to focus more on the thought process in a reader's brain. Learning how to think about content, instead of just learning content. #leadupchat

A3: Since I teach PreK, I measure my successes by how excited Ss are about coming to school. If I can excite them, I've won the battle! It's all about those relationships!! #leadupchat
Great point Adam. It is a continuum from personally relevant to the student to “I said so”.
The key is like you said develop the why for learning and the growth mindset to be a foundation. #leadupchat

Y’all I’m going to go back and answer some of the questions wing posed but right now I have nominated my self as co-moderator of this impromptu #leadupchat with @marcihouseman. 🤓
This applies to coaching teachers as well. Strength based coaching. I consider @RLGMike a mentor who taught me to magnify strengths and mitigate weaknesses. #leadupchat

@DKriedeman, @MrDougCampbell, @RLGMike
A3 Student engagement and attitudes are the best gauges for how much impact I'm having. When I can make readers out of nonreaders, I know I'm doing something right. #leadupchat
Y’all I’m going to go back and answer some of the questions being posed but right now I have nominated my self as co-moderator of this impromptu #leadupchat with @marcihouseman. 🤓
Great question! This week I heard from a couple of folks who I worked with in the past say that they have fond memories of the culture we created together. That's what matters to me! #leadupchat
A3 i like to experiment in my teaching & listen to Ss feedback to see about impact. This experiment led to incredible changes #TG2#leadupchathttps://t.co/XjcAAI9bsS
A2: How many #TweetableMoments can you capture on the day that are approximations to your expectations? And I’m not talking selfies, people. I’m talking about live examples of your school’s mission! Proud to say I can do this at #UVlearn! #LeadUpChat#edchat#satchat#piachat
A4. Acknowledging and recognizing the impact of others is so powerful. I also believe it’s important to honor those who have poured into you by doing the work and passing that encouragement you were given on to others! #leadupchat
I agree with 1 not 2. Kids can handle lots of rules if they serve a purpose. Evidence of this - how many rules (and consequences) are there in football? 100? Yet kids handle them no problem. And still have fun ... #leadupchat
“The first semester you can’t crack a smile” —- most terrible advice ever!! How are you going to build a relationship with a student who is afraid of you?! #leadupchat
A4. This differs based on the teacher. Some prefer no recognition at all. I like to personalize it by talking with them in person. Others are comfortable w/ me sharing success publicly. #leadupchat
I think being true to who ever it is you are is essential to learning and development, you cannot expect a S or anyone to respect you not being who ever it is you are. #LeadUpChat I'm a Parent.
A4 I try to leave notes, conversations, emails. Staff needs to know that what they are doing is some kind of wonderful. The smallest thing on some days can make the greatest impact. #leadupchat
Couldn't agree more! I try to be in classrooms everyday to see what's going on, acknowledge T work and then share out ideas. Acknowledging others is such an important community builder #leadupchat
A4. Acknowledging and recognizing the impact of others is so powerful. I also believe it’s important to honor those who have poured into you by doing the work and passing that encouragement you were given on to others! #leadupchat
A: Worst discipline/management idea I’ve ever seen put into practice bring more concerned with the discipline or reaction to the behavior than thinking about what that student’s need is that caused the behavior. There are no one size fits all remedies #leadupchat

THAT is what they will take away from your class for the rest of their life! The content is just the means. The Ss themselves.....they are the ends. :) #leadupchat
Or don’t smile until Christmas. This used to literally be the only classroom management advice that was given in many college ed programs ... #leadupchat
A3 One way is to gauge the level of excitement during the lesson. Another is-do you see the learning in action after the lesson? Also, are there attempts to independently explore/expand the learning later? #leadupchat
Yes! I’ve gotten a ton of resources from the likes of @curriculumblog and @nalang1 as it relates to micro-credentialing! I need them for my mammoth Lit Review! #leadupchat
A4: Acknowledgement of someone who has inspired you is the best compliment and re-inspires that person to continue on their path...share stories of what you have done based on their inspiration #leadupchat
@SMART_Tech discontinued their "floating tools" in the latest versions of Notebook, so I don't have as much of that power as I had to adapt visualizations to spontaneous q's. Disappointing. #Leadupchat

We must move US (Ts, Ss, Ps) from our (often limited, fixed) internal beliefs abt what a leader looks and acts like to a broad and vibrant shared vision of leader actions, qualities, etc. Many believe that to be a leader one must be an extrovert & be “loud” #leadupchat#moedchat

A colleague and I were just discussing this. We can absolutely measure the impact of our leadership by the sustainability of the work after we leave. We must invest in others and build capacity because the work is about what happens in our absence. #leadupchat
Educators having solid core values are essential to building communities that thrive and Ss that are curious and creative. #NT2T#EduGladiators#LeadupChat
Yes. The old school method of teaching was less concerned about relationship and more concerned with keeping students quiet. #leadupchat#timeshavechanged
A4: taking time to be a reflective practitioner and by encouraging, seeking, listening, and engaging in authentic conversations orally and electronically #leadupchat
Anyone familiar with a chat about Curriculum Design I think it may be - #NT2T#EduGladiators#LeadupChat | Parent curious, how courses are initiated, begin - District or Administration level.
A4: The older (wiser!) I get, I take time to tell people about the impact they have had or are having on me. Emails and face to face. The reaction is always so heartwarming. #leadupchat
Agreed. Be real. Although we can have different gears or personalities depending on the situation - true of parents, teachers, employers, etc. nothing wrong with that ... #leadupchat
A4: taking time to be a reflective practitioner and by encouraging, seeking, listening, and engaging in authentic conversations orally and electronically #leadupchat
A4: Thanks @latoyadixon5 This is one I want to get better at. Maybe time together. Maybe a note. Maybe long walks and cups of coffee. Maybe sneak their mantra into your school’s mission statement...thanks dad 😉 #Leadupchat#leadupteach

This! I love studying Lincoln's leadership & character traits that informed his leadership. Nowhere in my study of him have I seen the terms extrovert. Instead, I see integrity, equality, creativity, empathy, and courage...traits that anyone can acquire. #leadupchat#moedchat

When I trained for Reading Recovery, I learned so much from observing other Ts! Would love to continue that type of learning with colleagues! #leadupchat
Yep. And this was not uncommon. And I heard not all that long ago from some current ed majors that “don’t smile until Christmas” was still being taught as the holy grail of classroom management ... #leadupchat
A5. Students discovered their passion(s) in life which gave them identity, purpose, belonging. Nothing could be more important in education! #leadupchat
A5 Hands down, best compliment from a student ever (and what I want my legacy to be): "You're the only teacher who was not a brick in my wall." #PinkFloyd#leadupchat
Agree! When I flipped my feedback & began assessing drafts with Ss in class, they're motivation & engagement was incredible. Not a single S handed work in late. I knew the change was working #leadupchat
A3: I agree with @nancyepitts enegagement is a huge indicator of success with students. Are they excited to learn? Are they making connections? Are they working together? Are they generating their own questions? #leadupchat
A5: gave a safe place physically and mentally...kids need to be able to explore and practice without being afraid of failure...could question, reason, listen, laugh and love #leadupchat
A5 I would hope the people around me were compelled to be a little kinder, have a little more empathy and compassion and be willing to take risks to do the things they want in their lives. #leadupchat
A4. This differs based on the teacher. Some prefer no recognition at all. I like to personalize it by talking with them in person. Others are comfortable w/ me sharing success publicly. #leadupchat
A4 Tell them — face to face or handwritten note. Emails and checklists are ok for checking in, but for real appreciation I like to deliver the message personally. It takes time but their reactions are priceless. #LeadUpChat
A5 I started a school 20 yrs ago because I couldn't find one I agreed with. When I leave, I hope it will continute to be the positive, innovative community that it is now #leadupchat
A4: I think acknowledgement can be in the small moments or big moments. There was a principal who every time he went in for an observation made a point to leave a sticky note on the door of the teacher’s room with a compliment from that observation. #leadupchat
A4: I have found a simple "recipe" for 30 second feedback to be quite effective: I noticed....this is the impact it had on learning...thank you....keep up the great work. Use the recipe in person, on paper or electronically. #leadupchat
A5: I would hope that when folks thought of me they would remember to “presume positive intent” know that “love is the answer” and remember to always “keep hope alive” for our beautiful children and colleagues #leadupchat

A5 That I not only brought about systems changes but that I inspired others to look at the systems that result in inequity in education and make their own impact! #leadupchat
Good question! Someone asked this same thing in a recent talk I gave. There are some manners that are cultural (hand shake) but some that are universal (kindness) #leadupchat
A5.
It MIGHT say that I attempted to:
1. WORK with grace, hope, and optimism, especially through conflict
2. DRAW out each person's creative mojo and connect us a community to a larger purpose, serving the world
3. LOVE the hell out of life, people, and our planet
#leadupchat
A5: This question makes me think of the quote about how students are less likely to remember what you taught them but instead how you made them feel. I would want my legacy to be of an encourager who was passionate about education and individuals. #leadupchat
Q6. It’s one thing to self assess your impact, but another to get feedback from those you work with daily. Can’t wait to read your responses to this question! #leadupchat
I hope it would say that I empowered, respected, & most of all LOVED my kiddos! I hope it would say I gave them a voice/choice in their learning & valued their thoughts & opinions & hope that each of them know they can be or do ANYTHING they set their mind to! ❤️ #leadupchat
The future economy will require more human interaction since many task jobs will become automated. How do we not teach manners as a way to promote humans working with humans? #leadupchat

The future economy will require more human interaction since many task jobs will become automated. How do we not teach manners as a way to promote humans working with humans? #leadupchat
#leadupchat A6. I would ask my teachers.
I would want to know:
1. What about my leadership mattered the most?
2. What do you wish I would have done more of?
A6 Well, students for starters. It's scary, but in the long run if what we're doing isn't working for them, we have to change. I try to ask at least once per week what's working for you? What's not? #leadupchat
I asked a few of my educator tweeps from #leadupchat what they wanted their legacies to be as educators. Nobody said they wanted to be remembered for raising test scores. I’m just reporting the facts. See their responses below:
A5: A student once told me that when she was receiving a huge prize in engineering, she would be thanking me - not because I taught her engineering but because I made her believe she could learn it and succeed. Best moment ever. That is a legacy. #leadupchat

It didn’t work very well in the past. Students and parents just had a different perception of and relationship with the school’s authority. #leadupchat
To my PLN--check out #leadupchat right now--dedicated educators sharing their hopes for the legacy of impact they hope to leave. Beautiful words shared by passionate educators.
A6. I have my #observeme for colleague/admin feedback outside my door. Also have created survey for my 2nd graders and their parents - love to know how I can improve and value their opinion! #leadupchat
I'm not interested in working for ANY education system, but I guarantee you I won't ever be going away from it, I have children and they matter more than anything. #LeadUpChat
I don't know if this is what you mean, but I love using @breakoutEDU as a way to observe leadership skills & help Ss develop them. Without leadership they have difficult time breaking out #leadupchat
Never be involved with any community or individual that doesn't understand the value or Education, Children, Time, Money, and Food. #EduGladiators#LeadUpChat#LeadLap
A2: #leadupchat When Ss ask for book that I've booktalked or beg for more reading time in class or excitedly suggest a book for my TBR list, I know I'm building readers.
My Ss often write something I said on the whiteboard as they are packing up. I frequently see, "You are loved." Yes! I do want the to remember that, even as I am sighing. #Leadupchat
Thanks! We are doing a presentation about our student leadership and I don't want to shortchange our littles. Their leadership looks different, but it is there. #leadupchat
