Welcome all! So excited to be here with you tonight as we #MakeItReal in taking care of YOU! Please share: where you live, what you do AND your favorite game/toy as a kid!
So excited to be joining you all tonight on #MakeItReal! I'm LaVonna, creator and founder of #igniteyourSHINE, from Tampa, FL. My fave game/toy as a kid was LiteBrite! #KickinItOldSchool
Hi everyone!!! If you are just joining in, please share: where you live, what you do AND your favorite game/toy as a kid! Woo hoo! (Btw, this is the image being used tonight for each question of #MakeItReal chat, so look for it!)
Hi! I had a horse...but the type that was plastic and attached to dangerous metal springs and only moved a little forward and a little backward :) #MAkeitreal
Hi everyone! I'm Michele, elementary principal from Southern California. My favorite childhood toy was my Barbie Dream House with my DIY furniture. #MakeItReal
Q1. Taking care of you when you are in a passion-filled career can be difficult! It can consume every second of your life if you let it. Always seeking out a better way or techn., etc. How do (or can) you draw a line so you can also live life? #MakeItReal

A1: This is always a challenge but I schedule things in on my calendar, including family time and me time. There will always be more that can be done somewhere. Scheduling helps relieve the guilt of when I'm working, it's ok bc family time is scheduled and vice versa! #MakeItReal
A1: I get up early and do the extras before school to make sure I have time afterward for my family. Sure, I'm tired ALL THE TIME, but it's worth it :) #MakeItReal
Hey #MakeItReal - so excited to pop in! Alicia from NC - Lead Digital Learning & Media Innovation Facilitator at an amazing STEM magnet middle school! My fave toy was a book.
A1: Always struggle with this one and something I continue to work on it. Finding time to shut down from work is difficult. I need to "disconnect" and make time for family and for personal time. Sometimes that is at 5 in the morning at the gym but I'll take it! #makeitreal
A1: I have worked on being realistic with what I can do at home and on the weekends. Instead of lugging lots of work to and from home, I only take what I know I can get done. #MakeItReal

A1: That one is hard for my obsessive over achiever brain, but I make it a priority to schedule time for exercise and I read in any spare moments. I also schedule activities as a family so that we make memories together. #makeitreal

A1: I usually get to school about 6:30 and don't leave, most days, until 4:00. When I'm at school, I am in it 200 %. When I'm home, that's my time! I've drawn that line! #MakeItReal
A1: Set aside time on the calendar for you, your family and taking care of both #MakeItReal This way when work items come up you can check the calendar and see if you are available!
A1: It helped when I had to attend sporting events for my own children. I made sure to be “present” while there since I knew those days would go by quickly. Now, I’m in transition & am still working on this. I’d like to focus onmore time with my hubby now. #MakeItReal
A1: make sure it’s not your only passion. In fact it’s good for your students to see you having hobbies and passions that you are actively pursuing. Lead by example in chasing your dreams and enjoying life outside of the classroom! #makeitreal#balance
A1: I use every second of the day to get things done. Multi task at times. Read in bed and now I am obsessed with learning on Twitter chats. lo #makeitreal
A1: actually, I have 1 day a week off of work and I do my best to not do anything related to school. even if it's just mowing the lawn or writing for my next book, it's MY TIME @LaVonnaRoth#MakeItReal
Such a good one! I remember dragging so much home, dragging it back to school, back to home... Yea... Limit. There will always be more no matter what. #MakeItReal

Hey Denis! I'm excited to be here! I went through a period where I wouldn't have read if you held me down and made me. Now it's one of my favorite things to do again. Goes in cycles. #MakeItReal
A1- Having young kids forces me to draw that line. As soon as I get home, there’s really no opportunity to do anything but be mommy. I’m enjoying the kids events (soccer, etc) because it gives me time to talk with other adults outside of my school world. #makeitreal

Q2. Let's say your best friend who is an educator is trying to "balance" life between career and family. What advice would you give them to help them be successful in taking care of themselves? #MakeItReal
A2: If you don't take care of you, who will? And, if you don't take care of you then who takes care of your friends and family? YOU are just as important as everyone else, so MAKE. IT. HAPPEN! #MakeItReal
Just so you know... the point of this question is that YOU are the friend. Taking a different perspective outside of ourselves can often help us when we are having a challenge. #MakeItReal
A2:I would tell them to make sure they think of their students success. If you don't take care of yourself, your students will suffer. It is not selfish to think of yourself first. #MakeItReal
That is the greatest gift, Kim! My daughter just started college and we've had multiple talks when she was in school the importance of big events and quality over quantity on almost anything. #MakeItReal
A1: I am still working on my life/work balance. Having a dog has helped me push school stuff to the side while at home and play with her. Also, turning off work email notifications has been a game changer! #MakeItReal
A2: Since you've got the beach image, give the Rocks, Pebbles, Sand analogy. If you fill your life bucket with little things first, there won't be room for the big things that matter. #MakeItRealhttps://t.co/Y9HQWIbgEe
A2: if you are struggling....ASK FOR HELP!. There are so many people to talk to. My first few years of teaching I even had a therapist so I could vent appropriately and help deal with stress in a good way. #MakeItReal
A2: If you don't take care of you, who will? And, if you don't take care of you then who takes care of your friends and family? YOU are just as important as everyone else, so MAKE. IT. HAPPEN! #MakeItReal
A2: Make time for your family - even if you have to make an official date on the calendar. Listen to your body; if you're exhausted, you aren't helping anyone. #MakeItReal
A2: There's a piece missing. We need to put ourselves into that balance equation. Doing for others is fabulous AND we need to take care of ourselves, too. (Mental note to myself!) #MakeItReal
Q2. Let's say your best friend who is an educator is trying to "balance" life between career and family. What advice would you give them to help them be successful in taking care of themselves? #MakeItReal
A2: This is such a realistic question because I literally find myself helping a few colleagues with this. I’m trying to get them to be present for their kids & family because these moments & opportunities won’t always be there. The work will always be there. #MakeItReal
STOP!!! STAND UP!!!! Okay, #MakeItReal, pretend you are a little kid dancing to the greatest song ever for 5 seconds! When you're done, tweet the words, "I danced, did you? #MakeItReal"
Definitely check this video out if you've never seen this before. It really clarifies prioritizing what matters and how there's still room for everything else #MakeItReal
A2: Do what I say not what I do 😁, but seriously, work efficiently while on the clock and be present when at home with your family. If you have younger kids, wait until they go to sleep if you HAVE to work. #makeitreal
Q2. Let's say your best friend who is an educator is trying to "balance" life between career and family. What advice would you give them to help them be successful in taking care of themselves? #MakeItReal
A2- I would remind my friend that life is passing by while work continues to pile up. I would probably remind her that it’s about her relationships with students that count more than all of the time she spends doing “stuff” outside of school #makeitreal
A2: Write your priorities down on paper. Family, work, friends, hobbies, etc. put it somewhere that you will see it every day. Balance comes from understanding your priorities and honoring them with your time and your routine/habits. #MakeItReal#priorities

A2: Best advice? Let go of balance and go beyond. Inventory where you are with your satisfaction in what we call the Balance Quadrants in #BalanceLAP and immerse yourself in satisfying ways in all four! #MakeItReal
Q3. I told a HS graduating class in a commencement speech, it is not selfish/greedy to take care of you first. You do so, so you CAN take care of others. What are some things you WILL DO to take care of you at least twice a week? Not for family or friends...for YOU. #MakeItReal
This is hitting me hard this year with my daughter being a senior (who is in theater and also works so is never home 😥). I'm finding I want to hold on to each moment. #makeitreal
Rich from North Syracuse joining a lil late—had Open House
A1 This has been a struggle because I am all in and even when I’m not doing direct for school stuff I love learning. I’ve tried with on and off Success of setting a “you are done at __ time—no buts” #makeitreal

A3: Schedule in my walks/runs and DO them. Schedule in a block of free time to do what I want- enjoy the pool, practice my calligraphy, read, blow bubbles and explore new things. Excited to learn what others do and for more fun ideas! #MakeItReal

A2 Hard for me to answer because I am a single guy in his late 30s. Just make sure you make time for you—work out/meditate/find something you love #MakeItReal
Q2. Let's say your best friend who is an educator is trying to "balance" life between career and family. What advice would you give them to help them be successful in taking care of themselves? #MakeItReal
A3: So critical to understand self care is not selfish! It allows us to be more selfless! I run every day. Without fail. Read a devotional and journal. Considering adding monthly retreats. We need to stay centered in order to pour it out! #makeitreal

A3: I have gotten pretty good at doing things after work to make myself happy. It might just be reading a good book, but it is What I Need! I have also learned to delegate responsibilities to other family members. I work full time and take 9 grad credits too #MakeItReal
A3: this is a strange thing to do for me, but community service makes me a happier person!! I also go to the gym to keep up those endorphins. These Twitter chats are amazing too! #MakeItReal
A3: I've committed to morning workouts 3-4 times a week. Having "me time" is a big deal and it makes me feel better to get a workout over with. #MakeItReal
Thank you sooo much for joining in tonight to make this another awesome #MakeItReal chat!!! Thank you to @TaraMartinEDU and @MathDenisNJ for making this chat a reality for so many! Hugs to all!
A3 - I love crafts of all kinds. Currently I’ve been working on banners and decorating wine glasses in preparation for a craft fair in November. I probably have to work on them at least twice a week but I enjoy it and it’s def me time! #makeitreal
Many of us are guilty of this... All of our priorities seem urgent and necessary. Think long term fulfillment and rank your priorities in terms of maximizing your happiness, success, and personal fulfillment. And be honest with yourself when making your list! #MakeItReal
A3: Continue reading Lead Like a Pirate (It is bringing me joy to have time now for professional reading & networking/learning from my PLN on Twitter.) and try to get back into a light exercise routine (walking). #MakeItReal

Okay, Selena... since my girl just left for college 5 weeks ago... Yes. Every. Single. Moment. This will be the fastest year yet. I sobbed like a baby when I droppe her off. She said, "I am more prepared for this than any of my friends." That meant the world! #MakeItReal
Thanks for joining us tonight for #MakeItReal!!! Come back each week, and also check out the Instant Relevance Podcast when you have some time!!! Follow @InstantRel and subscribe here: https://t.co/bwZvDzZCzW

A3: Regular workouts to keep myself healthy and get energy up! Lots of wrestling around with my son. Budget time and money to eat somewhere new with my wife, and somewhere old that we know we like. #MakeItReal
It's so hard! She will be absolutely fine and successful, but I already miss her. I'll be that embarrassing mom who cries at all events this year #MakeItReal
Thanks so much for letting me join you #MakeItReal - I have *SO* missed the Twitter chats the past few weeks! Thanks @LaVonnaRoth for some terrific questions! See y'all soon! Have a great rest of your week!
I would absolutely love to meet you! You are welcome, anytime, Alicia! I need to get to NC- my sister and some great friends (like @smgaillard) are there! #MakeItReal
And I bet you feel AWESOME, Sarah! Love that you do that. My walks/runs are a VERY high priority for me. I also listen to books/podcasts then, too. #MakeItReal
