CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good morning! Maureen from Cleveland, where all CYO events have been cancelled and the grocery store shelves were cleared, but not one flake has fallen. 😂 #CatholicEdChat
Hey Mary! @jdferries and I are heading to Boston for a quick 24 seminar. Over/under on how our travel might work out? Flying into Logon Tuesday afternoon and leaving Wednesday evening. #catholicedchat
Good morning from snowy Chicago where I’m missing a free teacher workshop day at @chicagoshakes because the roads are too treacherous for me to make the trek downtown. At least, I get to join #CatholicEdChat this morning!
Good morning from La Loche SK where we’re under an extreme cold advisory. -40/-45 windchills all week. Renovations to our high school finally completed, almost 3 years to the day since the shooting. Bullet holes finally gone! #CatholicEdChat
A1 I actually think there will be a correction back to a bit less emphasis on technology. Too much screen time for kids is an issue. I also see lots of collaboration and problem solving - necessary skills. #CatholicEdChat

Great point - finding a balance for effective learning in the age of always on screen time is a challenge #CatholicEdChat - how to find the right blend?
Using @TweetDeck, having probs with @Participate, so sometimes forget #CatholicEdChat hashtag! A1: Classroom of Future- Student-led, Creative, Catholic
Curious to see what's going on at other schools-I've had parents ask if I can give paper assignments v. computers more often because of screen time concerns...HS Social Studies; #CatholicEdChat
IMHO that was always to be the idea... the "technology" is just a tool to get to the deeper experiences. Like you, I am frequently disappointed w/ focus on the hardware/resource at the loss of the learning experience. #catholicedchat
Yes it is cold! It took way too long for the renovations, adding to trauma & delaying healing. Tuesday is the anniversary. Memorial mass on Tuesday & Prime Minister Trudeau coming on Wednesday. #CatholicEdChat

awww. you posted my first #digcit assignment. the students have to write their own curriculum based on the standards. teach them what they want to learn and you dont have to work #catholicedchat
And let us not forget to review the Education Leaders Standards (shameless self-promotion as I was on writing team). As the adults in the room - we have reflection to action to support the Student and Teacher Standards :-) #catholicedchat@ISTEEdLeadershttps://t.co/OFWoPTC0Ww
A2: Modeling an example of real-world problem with both current experts and saints (thinking of Brothers of Atlas in Algeria) and accompany students through potential solutions. #CatholicEdChat
A2 ISTE Standards emphasize learning 1st with technology being the means to an end. Great learning can be high tech, low tech or no tech and still be innovative #catholicedchat
Q2 - How do you integrate the ISTE standards to ensure your students are ready for the future? #CatholicEdChat My lessons plans are submitted using PlanbookEDU and tags include both #iste and #aasl standards as well as Blooms Taxonomy. I also use Diocese of Rockford Guidelines.
Agree - the tech tools serve to help us to arrive at the destination- the learning goals and creativity of students can help to make the use transformative. How can we shift the focus to learning? #CatholicEdChat
our computational thinker unit is going to be a great experiment in patience and holding back laughter. students are going to make great ball contraptions. #catholicedchat --or maybe thats innovative designer
A2: journal and essay questions or more critical thinking. Also never be afraid to spend a day on class discussion. For example how about taking Tuesday next week to have a conversation about the impact of March for life with your students. #CatholicEdChat
I love using Google forms to get authentic data and feedback from students. Easy to use and great pie charts. 😂 I even used it for a program evaluation assignment for grad school.
#CatholicEdChat
A2 Working with service learning courses on capstone projects which will have authentic topics, data collection, and creative works shared outside of our school. #CatholicEdChat
A2 My only class is Newspaper - students analyze audience; communicate thru print, web, podcast, video; Ss select topics, tools, channels to communicate; collaborate in constructive teams; review current media trends & good/poor behavior in media #CatholicEdChat@BrebeufArrow
I agree, but i think we need to push back some on the growing idea that rejecting tech is a net benefit to learning. I often frame it as "if tech improves student learning, makes them more ready, or makes teachers job easier" then use it. #catholicedchat 1/2

This is an important part of the discussion! Leaders empower the learning environment with daily intentionality and support - what was your favorite part about being involved with this team? @ISTEEdLeaders#CatholicEdChat
In reply to
@40ishoracle, @ISTEEdLeaders, @ISTEEdLeaders
This is where I think Backward Design can help. Start with the goal in mind. Then work backwards to see what tools (tech or otherwise) can help students reach that goal.
#CatholicEdChat
I have a number of conversations with teachers who have decided "i dont use tech and that makes me a great teacher." -- the greatness is not a reflection of your rejection. you still have to prove that :) #catholicedchat

#CatholicEdChat — A3: modeling and discussing “failure” as a means NOT an end! To be “ready” means to be centered on Christ (peace) and adapting though challenges. He walks with us (Emmanuel).
https://t.co/IxK3Sdahfj
A2 i teach our required #digcit course, so its a bit unfair. but it is student centered, project based, a team of teachers meet weekly to discuss, align, and talk about where we are diverging. And the room is full of whiteboards #catholicedchat
Hey #catholicedchat - Want tools on how T's & S's benefit from activities designed to bring ALL members of the classroom into community, creating a safe, equitable learning environment? FOLLOW @_coolclassroom & check out Carla Tantillo Philibert. CLICK: https://t.co/66AFEeMUMm
#catholicedchat good morning from NW MO where we have snow on the ground and it still "feels like" 15 degrees. Sorry @ksedleader. A1:cooperative, engaging, inquisitive. A2:use tech but don't get away from personal conversations.
A3: This is a great question since we don’t know what future jobs may be out there. The answer may be to focus on critical thinking and creative problem solving with collaboration skills. #CatholicEdChat
A3: creating future-ready Ss means first creating future-ready Ts. Everyone needs to be able to use the right tool for the task, willing to take risks, open to feedback, willing to reflect honestly, comfortable with the 4 C's and flexible. #CatholicEdChat
This week the #digcit worked on Goal oriented thinking. Figure out outcome -- identify tools that you will need to accomplish it -- learn how to use them: First up?
How do you know where to be?
How do you know what to do?
How do you know what you have learned?
#catholicedchat
#CatholicEdChat My 3 words to summarize LMC Classroom of the Future: Personalized + Guided Inquiry + Service Learning
Three more:
Cross-cutting + Blended + Creative
As only private school edu (let alone faith-based) I expected group to focus on large public/state level one-size fits all resources.BUT convo was never abt *things* (altho we shared ideas) but always abt creating lived experiences to cultivate the talents & gifts #catholicedchat
I have kid to tell me they can’t be Saints. That because of low income they can’t do ask or that because of low income they can’t do x or y as careers. Not so fast. #CatholicEdChat
You all should look at the Covington Catholic maga video. Whatever you are discussing here is trivial when Catholic boys prep schools are turning out kids like this. We all know they will face no consequences at school. I’m sure you’re proud. #CatholicEdChat
A2) My school is blessed to have the global connection in person, sans technology. I see this as preparing my students for the future as they are able to converse face-2-face and learn daily from each other. #CatholicEdchat
good point. i think practical reasons, particularly given what we know about our evolutionary mindset & the tech-shortcircuits that propagate conspiracy-belief, slavish phone addiction, & insensitivity make tech use/mastery the default. Prove we shouldnt use it. #catholicedchat
A bunch of Kids from Covington Catholic HS in Kentucky showing disrespect to a native elder at yesterday’s Indigenous Peoples Day March, taunting and laughing and mocking him... while they wear their MAGA hats
A4: #CatholicEdChat I feel strongly that all high school students should take one course that is offered completely on-line. They need to know that this is an option for their post high school studies. Some may lovenit and some might not.
A3 In Education we hear a lot about being “future-ready” while acknowledging we don’t really know that that means. Helping students be equipped to think critically, communicate, collaborate and problem solve equips them to be ready for an uncertain future. #catholicedchat

A4 Online learning can be a great way to support Ss unable to attend class. I don't think about it a full classes, but rather optional ways for Ss to attend class when absent, or ways to continue/support the in-class learning. FTF is still the foundation #CatholicEdChat
A3) teach them how to be problem-solvers, team members, advocates for themselves, have a growth mindset, communicators, learners, self-motivators of learning, and more. #CatholicEdChat
A4 Online learning opportunities are HUGE because it makes learning limitless! Students anywhere can take a class on any topic, and tailor it to fit their schedule. Check out edX classes - amazing options! #CatholicEdChat
A4: Online Learning is here now! Universities and Colleges are using this type of LMS. Keeping in mind Pope Francis (and Pope Saint Paul VI) comments and guides on technology would be great for Catholic schools to emphasize. #CatholicEdChat

A4 very mixed feelings about online learning because baked into the heart of the corporate movement is removing the "human" from the teaching side of things. it is now about efficeincy and scale, not relationships #catholicedchat 1/2
A3 I consider the intersection of flexibility & structure. The foundation we offer Ss (from academic to faith) should be structured enough for them to engage w/o fear a new experience but flexible enough to allow Ss to discern how it fits in context &move forward #CatholicEdChat
Future ready for our kids means understanding their Dene language, culture, traditional skills, and connection to the land and applying them to meet the needs of an ever changing world. To approach the future from a strong foundation. #CatholicEdChat
My classes with @MagisTeacher were online and with fabulous professors. Really unique opportunity to learn and share with Teachers from across country #CatholicEdChat
Thus, we have to dial our focus up to 11 to make sure that the relational experience of learning does not become transactional in pursuit of profit. That said, we give students experience w/ it so that they can suck all the good from it no matter how bad it is #catholicedchat

Hey @ CovCathColonels is this your student? You must be an absolutely terrible school if you have young racists like this boy get away with this behaviour on school outings.
A4: My thought of student-led classroom of future goes with online learning. Ss have to be ready to direct own learning - some are not ready for that. #CatholicEdChat
#catholicedchat A4: online learning is great for rural areas and can benefit Ss who want to learn or have a proctor. But from my son's experience as Sr. In college, the Ss are finding ways to do as little as poss. How do u get highest blooms thru them?
I really am grateful to have met such generous people! Rather funny when moderators of process had to keep reminding us of technology focus of ISTE. We were all in the social-emotional realm of child development! #catholicedchat
in the digital distraction/news literacy units, i very much talk about it as a battle for students' will. App designers & tech companies have a lot more research into game theory and response triggers. teach kids the game so they dont fall into the attention trap #catholicedchat
Online learning is vital for many students in our school division as even the two “large” high schools can’t offer all courses and many communities have fewer than 10 high school students. The often are uprooted at 15/16 years old and have to move south for hs #CatholicEdChat
exactly!
whenever i discuss this with some of the large platforms, i inevitably hit the wall of "but real conversations cannot scale. we don't want to rely on 1 person for every 25 or 100. We want one person for every 1000 learners" -- thats their goal. #catholicedchat
I share your concerns. I’ve taught blended classes to HS students, where we met in-person for more than a year as well as on-line. I have also taught Catholic school educators on-line via @GCCE_LUC. With the visuals, such as Zoom, you can work to create a good connection.
The access and exposure to new teaching methods & people is the best promise of online learning. Especially in more isolated areas. But it is HARD to create the relational culture of F2F classroom online. I have tried and failed #catholicedchat
A4) Not quite sold on individual online learning. Finding from experience with my Ss there’s a learning curve for them, greater than learning in a classroom setting. It definitely stretches them to see use of technology different than how they’re used to using it #catholicEdChat
So, this is how they #MAGA and this is what #CatholicEdChat condones? Is this how @CovCathColonels educates young men "spiritually, academically, physically and socially" Does @Pontifex approve?
A5: Since we are an independent Catholic school, at our site I work to help Ts feel comfortable with new ideas and skills, @TechBioBek works to give individual support and we work to create a safe environment for risk-taking and learning. #CatholicEdChat
#CatholicEdChat RT @AndyMcKee27 Great point I'm going to paraphrase by Ken Willers @21stCenSupKW at #EduscapeISTE, "If you remove the word 'technology' from the ISTE standards you still have the skills and qualities we want to see in our learners." Q2
the original vision for online learning: courses taught anywhere and giving opportunities that are not available.
I found out one of my original online course structures had been adapted for "credit recovery" -- kids in cubicles staring at screens for credit :( #catholicedchat
#catholicedchat A5: diocese provides PD for all, administrators have to require it to be used and then offer praise, support and more praise when it is used to promote confidence that leads to efficacy.
Our teachers’ association is lobbying the school division to provide more support for online high school classes by providing space, hardware and a teacher to guide them. Current support is mainly room & board payments & is not successful #catholicedchat
i agree. but many of the online platforms have low-human capital goals and profit bottom lines -- thats why the educators have to stay hyper-aware :) -- your class sounds like the dream #catholicedchat
A5) Provide opportunities such as @EdcampUSA, @Twitter chats, taking on leadership roles, leading PD, individualizing PD, and more. It’s amazing how many pushback on self-efficacy. #CatholicEdChat
A5 Working on Ts efficacy thru eval system that focuses on personal goal setting & experimentation. Admin $$ supports goals (conferences, workshops, heck even retreats). @jdferries is great at supporting ideas that come back. Point the way & get out of the way #CatholicEdChat
#catholicEdChat Q5 My district+diocese is not doing any Ts PD about #futureready so I have opted to #growPLN@stpplmc. I have no one in my school to collaborate and I have learned so much from this Twitter chat. I attended #ISTE#FETC#GoogleEdu solo for my own PD.
A6 collaboration with Ts teaching colleagues and where Ss and Ts are co-learners when it come to challenge based learning and emerging technology #CatholicEdChat
