A slow chat intended for international educators in Africa and beyond but open to anyone who is interested of course. We chat weekly on Thursdays from August to June starting at 7am GMT and going until whenever.
So important to find the balance between family & work. I am glad you are feeling successful at that piece although it was rough. Let’s hope for a smoother 2nd half! #Africaed

Thank you Jill. I usually look at a year as a school year (Aug - Jun) but 2018 has been just 2018. One 12 month chunk of surprises of all kinds. :) So wishing for smoother 2019! #africaed

A1 I stayed enthusiastic & one step ahead in all my new classes. It’s been a challenge to design new courses as they roll but I’ve almost made it #AfricaEd
Hope it smooths out for you in the coming year. Excellent to see the outcome you found was growth and not defeat & that your people were there when you needed them. #AfricaEd

#africaed Thanks Ryan. Yep. My powerhouse source is my awesome wife. :) Her strength and willpower keeps all of us going. Fortunate to have a supportive team @ work too! So important in any organization - a support structure that ensures staff wellness.

This year, I took a leap of faith and stepped out of the routine: I moved countries before getting a job. This has been a huge challenge, but also a great opportunity. It's forced me to think creatively and consider multiple alternatives.
A1. I think that this year I took on quite a lot of new professional adventures. I am happy to end the year sane in spite of the demands. I feel I balanced life well, which allows me now to reflect, take deep breaths, and take it all one step farther.

a2. #africaed Learned that following up quickly on a suggestion can often have some cool results! In fact on this tag there as mention of blogging and so started a professional blog few months ago. Still writing. Reflecting. Adding things to it. Has been a good way to focus!

Glad to hear you haven't lost it in the transition to a new adventure. Finding that balance is awesome. I feel pretty good about it too, most of the time. Try to leave work at work and enjoy family time at home #AfricaEd
A2 I re-learned that authentic audiences make a huge difference for students. Had visitors (ES/HS) to my MS STEAM classes to play their games they created & effort, enthusiasm & results skyrocketed #AfricaEd

One new venture was born on this chat! I've started up a learning site for short, stand-alone lessons. Check it out:
https://t.co/tepKWadPLi
The first lesson is about avoiding phishing scams. I'm reworking it after some feedback, but anyone in #AfricaEd should feel free to try it out and give me your thoughts!

I'd love any ideas from #AfricaEd participants about lessons. What is a skill, concept or idea that you wish you had a resource you could send a student to instead of using class time?

#AfricaEd Reflect on your first term: Q1 One thing you did well? I think I did well forging relationships with all stakeholders. This was my primary goal for this school year and so far so good!
