Its been hard. I love the team Im working with and the kids and teachers are great. I hate being new and never knowing what my next step should be. #bfc530

@bmaurao#BFC530
Good morning #bfc530 friends! Great to be with you, as we rise and shine together, on this Tuesday morning! Thanks for always “responding to the need”! #gratefuledu
I've said this before. I tried, as often as possible, to make sure my drill question asked the students about them. First question of the day needs to be about the kids. Use that to connect content. #bfc530

@bmaurao#BFC530
Student-Teacher relationship is not rocket science ... talk to the kids about something other than freakin’ content. Then be their catalyst and they will remember you forever. #bfc530
I attempt to find out something that they will be doing outside of school and then I will follow up with them to see how it turned out. Really it is just giving them a chance to use their voice about what excites them. #bfc530
I try to get to know kids I dont have. Walked into an 8th grade class yesterday & saw a new student so I loudly said, "Hey, who are you?" made him laugh & we had a conversation. Ended it by welcoming him to our school #bfc530
Talking about books with kids is key as well. And not just because I’m a librarian. Teachers HAVE to read kidlit and YA. When you bond over favorite books it lasts forever. #forreal#bfc530
As principal, I have the good fortune of seeing many students over the course of the day. Eye contact, personal greetings, using their names whenever possible creates strong bonds.
#bfc530
Hmmm.... I think the not knowing is a good thing, Manny - it means you're really thinking about the situations and reflecting deeply. They're lucky to have someone like you! #bfc530
I've always been taught how important relationships are. When I was struggling in student teaching @kathyiwanicki& I brainstormed to start Lunch Bunch when kiddos can eat in my classroom - it's something I still do today #bfc530
I've always been a big fan of standing by the door as they come in and greeting them by their name. I learn so much then: how their game went, if they are feeling better after being sick, how was that test in another class, etc #bfc530
I don’t have Ss per say, but novice teachers who are just starting out-I try to spend time getting to know them, in order to coach them and help them find the best teacher inside them 😊 #bfc530
John Hattie reminds us that truly knowing your students has a 1.62 effect size (.40 can stimulate a year's growth) on student achievement. What do you do each day to be sure you KNOW your students (academically & beyond)?
@bmaurao#BFC530
#bfc530 Every Monday and Friday, we share good news. Also, conferencing with #students and learning what interests they are writing about really helps me understand them better.
A: Make it a point to connect through conversation, it’s important to ask questions & be an active listener. We must show interest in academics & what they’re involved in outside of school. “Students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” #BFC530

@bmaurao#BFC530
Good morning everyone- I connect with my Ss in the a.m. before they come into class- I eat breakfast outside my classroom so I can chat with them as they unpack, change their shoes & we catch up on what happened since I saw them last. Usually most important convos of day #bfc530
On our first t day of school we broke into groups and drove all around the community taking pictures of things that gave us hope then our p made a slideshow set to music. It was such a great reminder to know where our kids live and learn everyday #bfc530
To connect, I always check the sports scores in the morning so I can say, "Anyone watch the (insert team here) yesterday?" or, I'll ask what they did last night ASIDE FROM FORTNITE, or what they had for dinner, all to spur casual conversation as I take attendance, etc. #bfc530
Morning #bfc530 Tweeps.
I like to stay present and focused on each of my students as I engage with them. I try and remember who was in what sport, club, band, etc. What teams they follow, etc. Little chit chat goes a long way in HS.

@bmaurao#BFC530
I asked one of my students how her kitten was doing and ended up getting a thank you message from her mom about how much she appreciated me going out of my way to talk to her. Made my day to know it meant so much!! #bfc530
In my new role, ive been introducing myself to students whenever I get the opportunity. Very informal. Just finding connections wherever i can. #bfc530

@bmaurao#BFC530
Since I'm admin, I try to greet Ss in the hallway & conference with them when I'm observing classes. Plus, I love to talk about books with them! #bfc530
Spending time talking with the students that are walking the halls as the same time as me is always a good opportunity. They always have something to share. #bfc530
At my old school, a parent confronted me w/how many minutes I "wasted" talking to kids about things like basketball & ice skating. I defended myself by saying my getting to know them is reciprocated by them listening to me about history #bfc530
I'm just finishing up my EDL certification - am nervous about just that same thing. I think many of us are a bit harder on ourselves than is called for. Trust in yourself, make sure you have a good mentor & ask lots of questions!
#YouveGotThis!
#bfc530
Right now im just trying to keep my head above water. What i need is to rethink how i manage my time. My old systems are proving to be inadequate. #bfc530
Before any formal lessons, reading the syllabus, classroom rules, etc. spend time doing team building and getting to know each student and what they care about. Investing this time early to develop relationships and trust always pays off big time in the long run. #bfc530

One of the most powerful and simple ways of getting to know my students is to spend time with them, truly LISTENING to their stories...they know when you care and then they’re more willing to share! #bfc530#tlap#JoyfulLeaders#KindnessMatters

Implementing a morning meeting and reading aloud books that promote the development of social emotional skills are two great ways to get to know your students and for them to get to know you. Both promote authentic conversations where everyone can be real. #bfc530

I know we are not supposed to talk about religion, but I find knowing a student’s religion and whether they go to temple, church, mass, mosque is a huge thing for them. #bfc530

We also have a soft start to the morning- Ss spend 15 mins exploring with open-ended materials- gives me time to sit alongside them and chat before we come to morning meeting. #bfc530
That reminds me of something my best friend told me. When he meets someone, he doesnt just try to remember their name, but one fact about them so if he meets them again, he can bring it up and it adds to the connection #bfc530
Most days I talk to the whole group for 5 min. TOPS. The rest of the period is spent meeting students where they are - both academically and personally - to learn who they are, what they need, and to try to facilitate growth accordingly #bfc530
It isn’t enough to merely know about our students. Our knowledge must inform our relationship. It is our belief in their abilities to learn and grown that truly impacts learning. #bfc530
So true! When we circle up to discuss the books we are reading, we have some great conversations. Warms my heart when one student tells another, "Can I read that one next?" #bfc530
Talking about books with kids is key as well. And not just because I’m a librarian. Teachers HAVE to read kidlit and YA. When you bond over favorite books it lasts forever. #forreal#bfc530
Day 1 I have a survey (google form) they fill in where I gather some basic info about preferred nickname, country of origin, places they've lived, after school responsibilities, career aspirations etc. #bfc530

Hi everyone! Great ideas! It also makes me think that we have to keep learning about our students- there is always something new to learn- so keep finding ways through out the year! #bfc530
We have weekly student support conferences with students. This is a time to check in on not just academics but also emotionally and planning for the future. #bfc530
Each day at the start of class students are sitting with their new group for the day (visibly random groups #vrg) and they have an icebreaker question of the day to discuss with each other. They share out some answers after. I often share mine too

That's one of my biggest struggles too. The to do list gets longer & longer! Just started using the task feature in Google-w/ their new update it shows up on the side bar -along w/ calendar, keep... Also but to dos as calendar appts. - helps a bit
#bfc530
I'll do that when a share a life experience that reflects our topic in history that day. Love it when my students catch that idea & says, "That's like when I..." Love it when history teaches us life lessons #bfc530
As an Itinerant ESL teacher, I work hard to find time to meet with newcomer students and parents, and to be present for settlement meetings so that I have a deeper understanding of a student’s home life, background, experiences, strengths, challenges, hopes and dreams. #bfc530

Since I teach the entire school, I try to talk to each kid individually. Since I’m in a new school, showing them respect by working to learn all their names is also on the agenda. #bfc530
Hmmm, well I'm dealing with freshmen but that happens sometimes to me as well. I'd suggest just keeping at it, since the school year is still new. Eventually they'll love that part of the day too #bfc530
We call them 'Morning Tubs'- I put out 5 scattered around my class and Ss can pick whichever one they like. I've used: dominoes, blocks, play dough, tinker toys, card-making materials, Jenga, K'Nex, puppets, Lincoln logs, whiteboards/markers, beads.... #bfc530
#bfc530 I give them space to share. If a lesson finishes early or we have a few extra minutes I dont try to add in another activity, we just sit and talk. I see that as my time to learn instead of theirs!
I have to say that this is also one of the key advantages of #PBL, especially when you can work with individual students to develop projects related to something they really care about. Every day is about working with students on a passion project! #bfc530
Relationships...relationships...the power of connecting, never underestimate it! #bfc530 Tend the garden, watch kids blossom and grow! Have a terrific Tuesday crew! 😊 👍

It makes me realize why our P, AP & SS Coordinator each have their own office support person. Helps them keep organized & on track. I need someone to do that for me!
#bfc530
A: I try very hard to foster relationships w/ my S’s. I nurture these relationships thru non content and content discussions. If you care about your S’s they will care about what you are teaching.#bfc530
I expect that they at least return the "hello". I'll keep saying "Hi Ali" over & over as they walk to their seat until I usually get a hello back (usually a smile too by that point of me hounding them). #bfc530
Before we jump in to the work, I have conversations with my students everyday, talking to them about their interests. Students will not learn from someone who they don't like. #bfc530

With so many #edtech events that take place during the year...
1. How do you decide what to attend?
2. How do you deal with FOMO?
Pls share your thoughts for @HouseofEdTech by calling (732) 903-4869 #BFC530
This is key. Students don't like when Ts are too private & don't share about themselves. Paid off this week when a lovely gr9 student emailed me after Friday's tornado to check if I was OK b/c she knew I live near the 🌪 path after a conversation we had as a class. #bfc530

Greatness is upon us. We are approaching the end of September all ready and students are just scratching the surface of their ability. Have a great day, folks. #bfc530
Spending time talking with the students that are walking the halls as the same time as me is always a good opportunity. They always have something to share. #bfc530
Faith, culture, traditions, and home language are interwoven parts of who we are as individuals. All so important in the lives of our students and worthy of being known, honoured, and respected by teachers. #bfc530
I had former students lead my back to school night last night. One told the crowd “Dr. MC doesn’t talk at us she talks to us”. Never underestimate the power of genuine conversations with students! #BFC530#NBCTstrong

One of the best things I’ve ever done is ask parents to write me a letter about their child at the beginning of the year. I had *almost* every parent send in a letter, & I leaned more about my students in the first week of school than I ever have! #bfc530

Good morning! First time in chat. In kinder we have a soft entry 3-4/wk so Ss go directly to play. No circle. Provides time 4 meaningful conversation & warm hellos. Time to ease into the day and connect w/each student. #BFC530
It is one of the gray areas ... it should not turn into a religious debate ... it is a slippery slope if questions about which is better or what my preference is ... have to be professional #bfc530
While Hattie's research is questionable, I do believe in getting to know Ss. First questionnaires, then saying hi everyday, and truly caring... they know who really does #bfc530
Yes. Her daughter took notes each day when we “wasted” time. I had a bunch of boys on the basketball team & a girl who was a competitive ice skater among other relationship building discussions. #bfc530
I talk to every single student I come across. I say hello and ask them how they are. I give high fives, hugs, and hand shakes. I consider it relationship currency that I will need when the student is in trouble and needs to process with me. #BFC530
Besides restorative practice circles, I try each day to read nonverbal cues. Ss with nonverbal cues signaling stress, exhaustion, and more, I try to ask questions about what’s going on. #bfc530
