#wvedchat A1 Every educator needs affirmation in their life. This job is so tough, it's difficult to survive w/o some affirmation. Powerful leaders understand this.
A1: affirmation is what helps me understand that what I am doing is for a reason, we are going in the right direction. I may not be there "yet", but I am getting there. #wvedchat
A1. Motivates me SO VERY much! Just now I shared info about https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A website in a chat and the moderator @SylviaEllison retweeted it, encouraged others to check it out and, quite honestly, affirmed all of the work I put into it for educators. #wvedchat
Hi all Kirs form NY jumping in A1- The most important gift we can receive or give in genuine recognition and appreciation...nothing is more motivating and fulfilling. #wvedchat
A1 As humans we all need to hear that we matter, that what we have to say has value, and that we have a support system. That affirmation keeps us going. #wvedchat
A1: it encourages me to share what I’m doing with others. It makes me want to do even better. Gives me an idea of what I’m known for. Tells me where my strengths are! #wvedchat
A1. Timely question. I had 2 instances where students and former students showed me some love. Really helped top off a frustrating day! Makes me think tomorrow wont be so bad.
#wvedchat
#wvedchat ...A1~ makes us smile, encourages us to keep on moving forward & extend the kindness to others...just overall feels great to receive & give ❤️heartfelt
#wvedchat A1 Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, and their Harvard buddies built an empire by leveraging the power of human affirmation. Think on that. How many times do you look at your phone each day? Adults live out their lives on Facebook salivating for affirmation.
A1: Well, I think that as teachers we demand a lot from ourselves. There aren't enough hours in the day to get everything perfect, and I know that I for one am constantly seeing the imperfections in my work. So, it brightens my day when someone gives me a nod. #wvedchat
I don’t always think I’m doing anything thing special in my room, but when I hear that other people are going to try something they heard about in my room, it feels good. #wvedchat
#wvedchat A1 Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, and their Harvard buddies built an empire by leveraging the power of human affirmation. Think on that. How many times do you look at your phone each day? Adults live out their lives on Facebook salivating for affirmation.
Eric, Sped/Math teacher, working in an international school in Brazil. Joining this chat after being invited by the wonderful @MrPStrunk. My favorite pizza topping is pepperoni. #wvedchat
A2 Affirmation gives my students confidence. It gives them the little push they need to go outside their comfort zone especially when speaking English. #wvedchat
Affirmation is a motivator—affirmation is best on those days you reflect and think you could have done better. Then someone tells you—you’re doing great—and it reignites you. As teachers, it’s easy to be hard on ourselves when we want the best for our Ss. #wvedchat
A2: Affirmation has helped change my students from a fixed to growth mindset. They had to know their learning and achievements mattered to me and to not be afraid to fail. #wvedchat
A1: Here is one reason: "At the simplest level, when we feel good about ourselves and have a positive attitude, our lives tend to run smoothly."-https://t.co/WFOLxpUPAD#wvedchat
A2: I think the same answer applies from question 1. If all they hear are criticisms, it will weigh them down and discourage them. We have to build them up. #wvedchat
A2 - Same principles as adults. Affirmations are feel good drivers that support growth, show caring and recognize effort. Besides that, they are part of simple kindness. #wvedchat
A2. Imagine having books in front of you written in French and everyday you try your best to learn from them. Many students feel this way every day. When someone actually notices that they are trying it can send them soaring to new heights! #wvedchat
A2: Just as we need to know when we do well, our Ss need to feel they are moving and growing on their path to success. Without it, why would they want to come back to your class? #wvedchat
A2: just like adults Ss need affirmation. Seeing a kiddos face light up after an ah ha moment is the best. Second best is when their face lights up after being told jobe well done! #wvedchat
A2~ #wvedchat ...affirmations help our Ss feel empowered to be who they are, positivity spreads like crazy and these affirmations support risk taking, dealing w/ the bumps in the road head on and w/laughter 😊
A2b - Very few students will ever truly feel vested in your school or class if they aren’t given affirmations about the great things they do. #wvedchat
A2: In the same way it helps teachers, affirmation motivates Ss and gives them hope. It shows we believe in them. A St got a 20, then a 50. I focused on his growth. I told him that any growth is progress and that he could do it—his eyes lit up. Last week he got a 100. #wvedchat
A1 Affirmation is simply a way for me to check and make sure I am on the right track. It is a way for friends, colleagues, admin to give me feedback. I don’t need it, but it is a great authentic way to build relationships and support. #wvedchat
A2: When incorporated in the classroom, affirmations can help create an environment where students feel like they can be successfull, even if they make mistakes. Made me think of a quote from Rita Pierson. #wvedchat
A3: My HS baseball coach really impacted me from a coaching/motivation standpoint. He talked with me about what I could bring to the team and what I was good at and needed work at. #wvedchat
A2. Students are like me. Affirmations are a way of allowing for checks and balances to happen. More than that, it allows me to ceebrate students and offer them a way to know what is going well. It shares positivity. #wvedchat
A3 My grade 7 teacher Mr. Riley. He was a real science buff. He always brought in animals, equipment and great experiments. He was super kind and a fun teacher. #wvedchat
A3: Quite a few but my 3rd grade cooperating teacher during my student teaching wins. Always so positive but gave great feedback and helped grow me into the teacher I am today. #wvedchat
A3 My grade 10 history teacher Ms Kovacs gabe me a passion for history. She was always in a good mood, she was passionate and she held high standards. One of the reasons I went into teaching. #wvedchat
A3: David Bernheim, my creative writing teacher, made the biggest impact on me as a student. He made me feel as if I had a gift. He "saw" me, and didn't treat me like a kid. I felt valued, and worked harder in that class than any other I had. #wvedchat
A3: Cindy Shoemaker - Her son was in our class and succumb to leukemia at a young age. Her resiliency in the matter and returning to work through the hardship was inspring. It showed us all that we could make it, no matter what. #WVEdChat
Passion was a key motivating piece for me and my fave teacher as well! Glad she inspired you so much that now we get to chat with you on a nightly basis!! #wvedchat
A3 The teacher who had the greatest impact on me was my high school English teacher, Mrs. Park. She was tough as nails but as fair as they come. She always preached that all good things were worth the effort. She was right. #wvedchat
A2: tells them their efforts be achievements are appreciated, that they are good at something, and it builds relationships, motivates them to keep trying! #wvedchat
A3a: My 12th grade English T. She realized after having me as a freshman that I really wasn't just a silly blonde that I really didn't understand phonics. She made a quick sheet with icons to help me remember the sounds to apply to my reading. #wvedchat
A3. As a principal I moved to three different states as I adore a challenge. The amazing teams of teachers were honestly some of my best teachers as their creativity and tremendous positive energy taught me TONS!! Photo is one of these teams. #wvedchat
A3~ Mrs. Kingsland-Smith , gr5 teacher from Foxboro, Mass😊She showed love, support and belief in me when I didn’t even have it in me! She did this for all her students. She was also very positive and engaged in meaningful conversations! She was Big on family support, too! ❤️
A3 way back, senior year of '89, Ms. Flood @KecoughtanHigh who pushed me to be better as well as Mr. Wesson and Mrs. Butler for believing in my writing ability and building my confidence. #WVEdChat I'll never forget them for that.
A3b: I knew enough about reading to get my way through, the old "fake it till you make it", but I really needed more. She gave me the more. 32 years later I still love her for that! #wvedchat
A3: Hi guys! Chiming in from Texas! Biology teacher that believed I could “definitely do better” after failing an exam. Her second chance let me know she cared so much for me as a person.#wvedchat
A4: Constant praise. Whether it is in the hallway or the classroom, I always try to find the positive. Sometimes it is tough, but our kids deserve to know what they are doing well! #wvedchat
A3: Mrs. Danese Mabbitt, my high school French teacher. She would not let me settle for less than my best, and she was very frank about that. I respect the firm yet caring approach, personally. I sent her flowers on her retirement. Love that lady. #wvedchat
A4: I listen deeply to Ss to build relationships that enable to know their passions. I then help guide students to tools, people, and more that help them discover their own path to greatness.
#wvedchat
A4: I always remind you students that even the greatest people have had bumps and struggles along the way, and that persistence is key to success. When I make mistakes, I want my Ss to politely point them out and discuss them with me, the same way I would with them. #wvedchat
A4: By getting to know all of them as individuals. I try to find out their talents, and I work all year long to build them up as learners. I'll send positive emails home. I take time to compliment Ss on their successes both inside and outside the classroom. #wvedchat
A4: By showing and explaining to my students to never be afraid to fail as long as they try their best. The only way you learn is by trying and making mistakes. I will sometimes “miss” a math problem or letter to show my Ss it is okay and to keep on going with a smile. #wvedchat
A4: I have always worked to project that we are in it together. I find something to connect with them. I use humor when appropriate. I tell them how proud we are of them. #wvedchat
A4 Loaded question. I try by believing in them, focusing on the positive while building up the foundation to help them tackle their challenges. I try to connect with them, love on them, and try to build a community so they have each other. #WVEdChat
A4-Allow studentsto try again. Teach them there are many ways to solve a problem and showing perseverance is more important than getting a quick answer #wvedchat
A4 I have a good relationship with each of my S's. I tell them when they are great and won't let them slide when they are not doing their best. I expect them to try #wvedchat
A4: I won't let them give up on themselves. I tell them that I know that they can do it, and will wait with them until they push past their fear in order to try. Sometimes, kids just need to know that you believe in them. #wvedchat
A4: Expect and help them work towards excellence. Don’t take off points for petty things. Keep asking them questions and never force students to stop learning by making concrete deadlines. That tells them that learning has an end. #wvedchat
#wvedchat ...A4~ consistent, specific praise, support & encouragement... lots of modeling of responsible risk taking, mistakes and recovery from such and tons of shared laughter & ❤️
A3: I had 2teachers:
1. Ms. Dempsey, Kindergarten—why does any kid love their K teacher? She was smart, nice & pretty. 😆 (But she’s why I became a teacher & taught Kinder for 8 yrs.)
2. Dr. Brooks, Prof. @HoustonBaptistU (have BA in Mkt) - he was FUN...even in college.
#wvedchat
I always end class with telling my Ss I’m proud of something they did, when on their not-so-great days. Then remind them a fresh start comes when they step back through my door the next day. #wvedchat
A3: We need to make learning fun so kids want to come to school and grow up to teachers themselves! Even in middle school, HS & college! #wvedchathttps://t.co/jYkefyUymB
A4: I purposefully put myself in situations that allow my Ss to shine. It could be having them show me something they are good at or trying something that I know I will need their help with. I talk about my failures, especially with learning Portuguese. #wvedchat
A4 I try to be a role model and be what I want to see. I want to see the greatness I know they can live and I will support, cheer, push and challenge to make sure kids believe. I try to inspire with words, but mostly through actions. Everyone deserves a cheerleader. #wvedchat
A4 all learners need the opportunity to create, explore and reflect upon their learning. This should be evident throughout the whole school community. #buildcommunity#wvedchat
A5: I really enjoyed a staff book study this year that read and grew with @gcouros book The Innovator's Mindset. It was a great book to inspire and foster risk-taking for our Ts.
#wvedchat
A4: I never give up on Ss. I know they come to school wanting to do and be the best, just outside influences may get in the way. I encourage them, talk with with them and let them know they can do it. #wvedchat
A4: I remind them that we are all at different levels, so push yourself a bit more every time in writing, speaking, whatever you do. To grow is the goal because we shouldn’t remain where we started. #wvedchat
Any WV teachers willing to do a virtual collaboration with a grade 1 FL class to help the achieve all 50 states before year end at the end of this month? DM me. #wvedchat
A5: Yikes! I have several books that I have bought and plan to read over the summer. I have been too busy to delve into them currently, which I regret. So... I am packing my summer full of growth. #wvedchat
A5: I read the YA story Fish in a Tree by @LynMullalyHunt. Made me realize the impact a positive attitude can have on even the most reluctant learner. I believe it should be required reading for college ed prep classes. #wvedchat
I love it. My littles love to point out when I make a mistake. I then own it, and thank them for helping out. In return they are learning how to support others and take support from others. #wvedchat
A5: Kids Deserve It was so uplifting for me. What really hit home with me is "Unfulfilled Expectations"- from ch 2 in the book- Culturize: Every student. Every day. Whatever it takes.
By @casas_jimmy. So powerful! Thanks @MrsGodsiff for the recommendation! #wvedchat
A4. Leading by example, taking risks, encouraging others, always learning, they love when I announce we are going to try something I found on twitter;) #growthmindset and failing enthusiastically as a family❤️#wvedchat
I always own it and talk up how I plan to improve next time. Modeling for Ss how to process and reflect is key to helping them understand how to grow. #wvedchat
A5 I am reading Culturize by @casas_jimmy with a study group and it is fantastic! Also reading A Novel Approach for my HS English class by @teachkate Both are transforming my views and challenging me to be better. #wvedchat
#wvedchat I have to say, for any of my coaches reading later... The affirmation I've received from you guys this year has always come at a time when I really needed it. Thank you all. It's been a pleasure serving you.
A6: @mrpstrunk has convinced me to up my game in my own growth as an educator. Still working on it, but watching him sprout is making me work harder. #WVEdChat
A6. I have only met one person from Twitter. I think @conniehamilton influenced me the most. She is an amazing leader. She used to moderate #TMchat#wvedchat
A3: I had a professor who emailed me that a student did not know me/ my ability like she did. That was a game changer for me, and it truly made a difference in my life. #wvedchat
A5: From that excerpt in Culturize, I keep thinking of the Ss that the author mentions that saw school as an "institution" that just put limits on them. That has been what I have spent yrs fighitng against. #wvedchat
A5- So many great books and articles need more time in the day! Really have gotten so much from #therobbreport by @ERobbPrincipal and really into @rickwormeli2 fair is not always equal my current prof book .. #wvedchat

A6 This guy @MrPStrunk is a good choice. He just keeps sending me chats to jump into where I have met some awesome educators. Hope to meet him in the real world some day. #wvedchat
#WVEdChat A2: w/ the Ss it turns a bad or potential of a bad day into a good day ... it shows them you’re watching them, you’re onto them ... it shows them you have noticed their efforts ... all of them want to be noticed

A8 Practice the art of reflection. Being a reflective learner, teacher, thinker, person...it will allow you to grow towards everything you ever wanted to be and more! #wvedchat
A8: Believe. Believe in yourself and believe in those around you. Believe you can be a force of positivity, kindness, and learning. Believe others can do the same, and, together, greatness at unforeseen levels.
#wvedchat

A7: Thr art t- she thinks differently than a science t. She brings out a side in me like nobody else can. One that is creative, takes huge risks, and teaches with #pbl. She taught me the process of creating is the most important and deconstructing found objects! #wvedchat
A8 Be yourself, which means you have to believe in yourself. Get to know your Ss and build relationships. Have fun and don't let you or your Ss get lost in the journey. #WVEdChat
