A1: As a new teacher I REALLY struggled with this. Working on "backwards mapping" my goals for my students helped a lot.
Hey & Join us when you finish as we discuss Visual Literacy on 9pm EST
A1: One pro is that a T is able to determine an end goal based on their Ss needs and it allows for progress to be monitored
A1: pros- have a end goal in mind; cons- might be too focused on that goal and forget about the true reason for teaching
A1 - I've found long range planning gives purpose to my daily tasks and keeps me focused in the long run
This is definitely an area I'm working on as a new teacher as well; I am fortunate to have an amazing team around me!
A1: Some pros of backwards mapping are alignment and ensuring that you're seeing the bigger picture of what you want Ss to learn
Yes! This is SO important, We have to find a way to decide based on the keeping the end in mind.
Monitoring progress along the way is huge, quick checks for understanding can be huge difference makers down the line
Excellent! Good to hear that you are keeping this in the forefront. https://t.co/wAEWzis2Lb
A1 - I've found long range planning gives purpose to my daily tasks and keeps me focused in the long run
A1) able to set goals for meeting state standards and plan for engaging lessons
Do you find that your long term plan changes a lot due to the students different needs?
Yes!! This is critical. https://t.co/GcTTpQ3p8H
A1: Some pros of backwards mapping are alignment and ensuring that you're seeing the bigger picture of what you want Ss to learn
You took the words right out of my mouth! I was just typing a "con" for long range planning!
Ok...so this is a great reflection. Looking at your districts goals and aligning those to your students needs!
Once i have a set plan in place, I find it easier to modify & adapt as I go to fit the needs of my students
Ok all!! seems like you have a good grounding on the way Long Range Plans work!
Big picture is such an important aspect for both the teacher AND the Ss, they should always know whats ahead
A1. As STs, we have to submit complete unit plans before we begin. Gets you to pre plan/change things around where needed in advance
Is it still worth it to make a plan even if it changes often?
Hello! Great to see you here! Good to see that you are focused on those needs.
I personally think so. Getting into the habit of laying it out gives you a great starting point
That's what I was thinking, but I just wanted to hear your opinion! Thank you!
That's what we're all here for - to help one another!
Q2: 1st I would look at where my Ss are and what I need to do to meet their needs!
A2 I would start by thinking about what I want my Ss end product to look like, what is truly important/meaningful/impactful
Q2. Begin by looking @ new curriculum content online. Then divide into themes and months with end goal skills for grade level
Q2: I would state by looking at the current place my students are and then build from their to the end product
A2: My starting point was a combo of where I was, & where I needed to be with my Ss by end of year. Then I plugged in dist. areas.
Love that! We have to always be sure to look at where our Ss are at all times.
I like that! Then are you plugging in your Ss needs as they come up during the year? https://t.co/Y2Ih9GA2OP
Q2. Begin by looking @ new curriculum content online. Then divide into themes and months with end goal skills for grade level
be careful about focusing on themes 1st rather than what you want Ss to learn - "activity focused teaching" from UBD
Awesome! https://t.co/M04EBpLmG2
yes :) this year I knew we'd have an IEP and designations so I preplanned for that. For the rest, as they come.
I start with the standards and work backwards from there to design units to teach the skills.
What standards does your district align with? Thanks!
A2: 1st focus is always standards then can evaluate Ss needs & use learning activities to get them to those goals
I thought we lost you! Great to see your reflection!
A2: I look at the Science strands to get a big picture. Also chptrs of math text. I plan yr forward and projects backward.
Awesome! We always need to know where our Ss are at before we can effectively move forward!
Hey, now this is an interesting perspective. Tell me more... https://t.co/8wkHX5lWUI
A2: I look at the Science strands to get a big picture. Also chptrs of math text. I plan yr forward and projects backward.
Which classes? Fresh out of college but still miss my great professors and all their wisdom!
That is so good to hear! This is very critical part of teaching!
I think if I were asked this in college... I would go by guidelines and end of year goals as mentioned in the question.
A3 - Our dept uses Google Docs to share curriculum with one another and we meet several times a week to collaborate in person!
A3: How about a timeline or staircase visual illustrating the stages/goals so folks know how things are progressing.
I forgot who it was... But I really liked the importance/impactful/meaningful response
A3: I have a unit plan template to follow for student teaching and I've found great online resources that tie directly to standards
Extremely fortunate to work in a small, cohesive district with an awesome group of tech integrators!
Hello! Great to see you Dean! Love the idea of a visual planning space. https://t.co/alvlS2SRrS
A3: How about a timeline or staircase visual illustrating the stages/goals so folks know how things are progressing.
That was me! Glad you enjoyed it; hope we can swap more ideas in the future!
It is always a great time when educators can collaborate in person as well as oniline.
A3: Google Docs would be a great way to share with other teachers your plans and processes
A3: Using Google Docs is the easiest way to collaborate! It's easy to update and change! Meeting in person is just as important!
Now that is great! Not all Uni's offer this to Pre-service T's. https://t.co/FZsPke7BDR
A3: I have a unit plan template to follow for student teaching and I've found great online resources that tie directly to standards
My fave!! What a great idea and I'm glad to see you shared it! https://t.co/FjA0RMun00
A3: Google Docs would be a great way to share with other teachers your plans and processes
A3: If you use Google Docs, you could allow parents to see it and use it as a way to see what's going on!
Fwd: have projects add to other projects- Big Pict. Backwards: break down how to teach a project backwards-clarity
Awesome idea for school and parent communication. https://t.co/y23Hu4RU4Z
A3: If you use Google Docs, you could allow parents to see it and use it as a way to see what's going on!
That's true! What a unique idea...giving your parents a birds-eye view into your planning process.
I've used Google Docs extensively throughout college and in my first year and it's fantastic!
Then let's definitely stay in touch throughout your college journey!
Docs, Sheets, Slides and even Sites are all great options for students and teachers alike!
A3: Also think about using too. Lot's of collaborative functionality ;)
I use google drive with my dept. we all have access to all lessons and resources.
A3: Goog Sheets. 1 Col is themes, 2nd is Table of contents, 3rd is projects that fit. Then move stuff to fit weather, test schedule
Our college had senior edu majors create a portfolio using Sites and present to the faculty!
A3 Google everything....Docs, Forms, etc...I am learning that if I need it, Google will probably have it.
Awe...ok. Now it makes sense to me. Brilliant!
So agree with philosophy here! https://t.co/5rNSjujsQo
A6: Districts need to build trusting relationships with high quality partners to develop long term, sustainable plans.
A4 - 1 Picture end product, whatever that may be, 2 Align with standards, 3 Gather resources and collaborate!
Amazing!! So well said. :) https://t.co/xPI7OXTuyO
A4 - 1 Picture end product, whatever that may be, 2 Align with standards, 3 Gather resources and collaborate!
A4: 1) Gather standards 2) Design end product/assessment - how will you measure learning of standards? 3) Design learning activities
A: if Including, keep Spec Ed goals fresh in mind (review) so you can approach with creativity. Same 4 any other need.
Thank you! This collaboration portion may be my most favorite part! :)
So awesome!! You thought this out well and executed it. https://t.co/GbhDzZJsnN
A4: 1) Gather standards 2) Design end product/assessment - how will you measure learning of standards? 3) Design learning activities
I'm glad you mentioned something about assessment, always such a critical component!
A4: 1 Determine end goal, 2 Coordinate with the standards, 3 Collaborate with other Ts to design the learning activities and lessons
A4) think of idea with end plan 2) find standards 3) get started
