Last chat we talked about #EmpowerED teachers. Tonight lets chat about #EmpowerED learners! #UCPSChat Lets get started with Q1!
  • mrs_khorne Apr 10 @ 7:35 PM EDT
A1: students who are able to take information and research, or come up with their own solutions. Similar to flipped classroom, student choice, and flexibility with a teacher who is guiding them to ask questions, or step outside of their box. #UCPSChat

  • ucpschat - Moderator Apr 10 @ 7:36 PM EDT
Yes! And when researching knowing how valid that info is! I think the teacher guiding and student leading is KEY! #UCPSChat

Thinking about those awesome answers.... lets move to Q2: #UCPSChat
  • ucpschat - Moderator Apr 10 @ 7:39 PM EDT
I think that works for Q1 and Q2! Voice and Choice is a great way to foster these characteristics! #UCPSChat

  • mrs_khorne Apr 10 @ 7:41 PM EDT
A2: Giving students time to struggle. I believe students need to struggle to an extent to succeed. It gives them the drive to want to continue, and being able to help them and think about how they are solving a problem, gives them the opportunity to help others. #UCPSChat

A2: Admin has to look at their school as their class & model by example. Reculture teaching & learning by living it out; inspect what you expect and they will respect what you expect. @ucpschat #UCPSchat

Yes! Did you read the Edutopia article about #productivestruggle that @AGHoulihan tweetwed earlier this week? I LOVE that term! #UCPSChat

A3: Again, comes back to the struggle term. I think when you see kids getting off task, or off topic, or just really not being able to think or move forward its okay to prompt or cue to give them another way to think about it. It always helps getting others opinions. #UCPSChat

I think about this when teaching my son how to swim. You don't want him to drown, but if he doesn't get the opportunity to prove he can do it, how will he know? Timing is key! #UCPSChat

  • jenny_kanagy Apr 10 @ 7:53 PM EDT
#UCPSChat A1: An EmpowerEd learner is one who is given tools that facilitate their exploration of whatever they are wanting to learn. They have the freedom to explore a concept with support.

A4: We just wrapped up our biography unit where S's were to pick a historical figure, become a researcher and an expert on their figure. They created a lapbook and bottles buddies to present all they learned to their classmates. They did great, and all on their own! #UCPSChat
    In reply to @ucpschat
  • jenny_kanagy Apr 10 @ 7:56 PM EDT
#UCPSChat A2: In my SS classroom, I use PBL a LOT! I only lecture about 1 - 2 days per topic and the remainder of student learning comes through different types of exploratory learning. Could be reading primary sources, analyzing media sources, projects for creative learning

  • jenny_kanagy Apr 10 @ 7:58 PM EDT
#UCPSChat A3: Cues are integral in keeping students on task. Throughout we should be asking them to share - with us and with each other - what are they learning - what are their questions?
    In reply to @ucpschat
  • juliestarnes521 Apr 10 @ 7:58 PM EDT
Q4: Alice students to use their learning to produce something (Google slides, post, anchor chart, product, etc.) or allow them to teach others, watching then teach a classmate gives you great insight to their own learning/ knowledge of a topic #UCPSChat #TeamITES

Yes! And giving them an audience encourages their best work! These are great examples! And rubrics are key here, right?! #UCPSChat
  • jenny_kanagy Apr 10 @ 7:59 PM EDT
#UCPSChat A4: PBL or EmpowerEd learning allows for assessment of different aspects and levels of learning. It could be self assessment (survey) or comprehension (socratic discussion or comprehension quiz)
