Well, rats! And heyyyy Amber!
Hey ! Stacey from NJ. Will be floating in and out tonight.
Annnnd...Amazoning that...
A1 get down to the nitty-gritty of how things work then build it up again to make it work even better!
Hey Alex from LA. Teacher of K6 tech. actually used #2 pencil in my tech class today. Used the graphite to conduct electricity
A1. Seeing the parts (guts) of things they see everyday. Figuring out what part does what, etc.
A1 Spatial relationships and the powers of observation make taking things apart advantageous
A1: how to put it back together!!! inquiry about how smaller parts work/their purpose, maybe a better way innovate something
A1 There's a total wow factor that happens when kids open up electronics and see the blend of digital and mechanical.
A1. To see what's inside. I took apart a cell phone just to look.
A1 inside things also make good drawing models - interesting doodles beautiful artworks
A1 the delicate inner workings of everyday devices. My son once took apart an old iPhone-had a greater respect for his things.
It's really amazing that such tiny things are so powerful.
Solo dad duty.
Taco Tuesday. (Fish tacos, btw)
Sadly, that means no
You're killing it with the pics tonight!
Yes! Developing a greater respect for one's belongings! https://t.co/jgSMJungld
A1 the delicate inner workings of everyday devices. My son once took apart an old iPhone-had a greater respect for his things.
He was in awe! It was pretty cool. Kinda meta that he filmed it on another phone.
A1 this is the start of how my husband became an engineer
A1 Team work. All parts are necessary to work properly.
Once saw the insides of a telecommunications hub thingy big as a room watched hubby open up FIX some minute part and wham!
A2. Old phones, radios, computers, toys, etc.
Attended a K-2 conference today centered on this book! It was magnificent!
and have you seen that guy who made a toaster from scratch by himself. THAT builds respect for modernity!
A2 If you can find 'em, VCRs are a RICH resource for cool parts!
I have an old computer that I want my Ss to take apart. It scares my admin. :)
Oh, man, I forgot about that, that was so cool.
A2 old electricals to compare to new electricals - unplug it first!!!
I didn't think of that! Ours are dying--must put them to good use!
I just love it..another one is what do you do with an idea
A2: Things students use most are the best to take apart; an appreciation for why the item's so valuable , given its components
My Ss have taken apart SO MANY computers. You get cool magnets when you pull apart the hard drives.
A2. Vacuum cleaner. Life skill.
“: A1 Team work. All parts are necessary to work properly. ” Yes. This. Amen.
A2. They can take apart ANYTHING!! So many cool learning opportunities!
Yes! Must clean the filters!
A1) Shanna from NJ. Hi ! When S take things apart, they make sense of systems and how parts are connected.
that was one ugly toaster. I appreciate our post industrial society daily as I toast.
A2 Old books that are falling apart! You have a source of words to reuse in a different way, one page for each student.
Haven't seen it, but would indeed result in some respect for detail and hard work! https://t.co/GFmmAKGesB
and have you seen that guy who made a toaster from scratch by himself. THAT builds respect for modernity!
A2 printers are really interesting with all the ink colours and photocopiers!
TO-tally. You have to be careful with the ink and the glass, but heck yeah!
yes make new stories with lots of old book bit coming together!
A great source for https://t.co/uxqdSmQQAy
A2 Old books that are falling apart! You have a source of words to reuse in a different way, one page for each student.
😝 would love to see a pic of that 'Patchy' toaster! https://t.co/PaXagj42YB
that was one ugly toaster. I appreciate our post industrial society daily as I toast.
That's what we've been doing!
A2 JJ Abrams said in his Ted Talk that it's cool to dissemble boxes into flat pieces to see how they go together.
there's glass? oh you mean on photocopier of course!
A2: let the Ss passions drive what they deconstruct; electronics are an easy option
A2) My fav was a mechanical doll. S pulled its face off and saw how its eyes and mouth moved. Gruesome, but cool!
Yeah, so many parents drop off 3 in 1 printer/copier/scanners when I ask for old electronics.
A1: Taking things is part allows you to learn how it gets put together! And how it doesn't
Erin from SW Washington, always joining in a quarter after the bell!
YES. A girl took apart an animatronic cat in my class, SO CREEPY w/o fur, but w/batteries.
love this idea! Need boxes!
A2. iPhone cases for extra challenge. Small remotes are fun.
That was a really cool day. Too bad S wanted her doll back!!
A3: DECONSTRUCTION warrants conversations in breaking down/building up-in Art & in one's feelings! https://t.co/Ej8AQfp2ww
Q3 Going 2D from 3D is always brainwork. Add in pieces and communicate assembly and you level up! https://t.co/pn5gwS9RRE
A3: it's like those zoomed in photos-It gives u different perspective. How do the parts sound? What would they say 2 each other?
A3 I love diagrams. The perfect !
and decopage anything with old book pages and it's pretty cool
I LOVE this! https://t.co/ng5azsPyqS
A3: it's like those zoomed in photos-It gives u different perspective. How do the parts sound? What would they say 2 each other?
A3 Ha! yes Ss do wonderful drawings of insides- pity don't have pics to show you! great for dev. colour theory with all shapes
Q3: gives Ss authentic writing prompts, how-tos, also great opportunities for digital storytelling and even "repair" videos
A3. Recycled art. Love it!
A3 Circuit boards double nicely as towns - great for some Soc. Studies writing... plan a town.
A3 develop flow charts of how things work
Shh - she forgot all about it... Better to upcycle the kids' toys WITH permission though!
A3 Disassembly is a creative process and inspires Ss to see things in new ways. Ss are naturally inquisitive, so this is fun!!
A3. Use insides to create art. Wires and whatnot to create jewelry.
Nice connection! Go metaphors! That would get Ss who don't necessarily want to take apart electronics https://t.co/lh8NhJhdPX
A3: DECONSTRUCTION warrants conversations in breaking down/building up-in Art & in one's feelings! https://t.co/Ej8AQfp2ww
you can use paint pens to draw roads on circuit boards
A3 You've got so many shapes, that you can chart for K-3 math.
I wonder what happens to output when colour pods are put in wrong spots in printers?
Hi, Cheryl from NC jumping in VERY late, sorry :-( I'll catch up!
I'm betting they have circuits to warn you, but if you could disable them, it could be so cool!
That would be interesting to find out!
Like that suggestion, a project log!
A4: a beautiful mess- DECONSTRUCTION IS INVALUABLE!
A4: that's how new things get invented! Getting an outsider's perspective inside
A4. Whatever they can imagine! Mixed media art, sculpture, etc.
A4: Show them pictures of things made from junk, they will start to envision things to make. Lots of images when googling.
A4: what couldn't they make?!
A4 found object sculptures -no - wait - de-reconstruction sculptures
A4: Whatever they want! Let the creative juices flow and provide the opportunity to be innovative.
Yes! https://t.co/RjnfqAWNLa
A4: Whatever they want! Let the creative juices flow and provide the opportunity to be innovative.
Great idea, just looked at blog. Fun!
Like found poetry?!?!?! ❤️ https://t.co/Phc61y4iYp
A4 found object sculptures -no - wait - de-reconstruction sculptures
A4 I wanna have 'em make instruments and then we can compose music.
Cathy, edtech specialist in NYC, fr NJ. Checking in to LIVE w from Costco!
A4)Think like Rube, make a sibling for Optimus Prime, add heat and pressure for new substances... https://t.co/iN4liYk5zf
Thanks, we're reviving them this year!
A4 Anything their minds can conceive! Remove the limits and allow them to define their own products!!
A4) My Ss asked for thread & needles. Itching to have a toy drive & dissection to harvest parts, then re-imagine/re-build!
we ask 3 ?s. What did you do? What did U learn? & what ?s do you have?
Tweet pics when you do them!
they fit into almost any rubric
A4 weapons of mass destruction
My Ss are experts at Weapons of Mass Distraction. I'm secretly proud, even as I try to get their attention.
A5. Asst. screwdrivers for different sized screws & hands, hammers, pliers, tweezers, magnifying glasses.
A5 You're gonna need one of those screwdriver head sets that has different star bits to take apart some electronics.
A5: Anything can be a tool I suppose, depending on how you use it. Paper clips serve a LOT of purposes when bent/straightened
A5: Tools for tiny hands and places, screwdriver, tweezers, magnifying glasses. Gloves and goggles too!
A5 Magnet bowls are good for catching screws. Ziploc bags in a pinch...
A5) small screwdrivers, needle nose pliers, magnifiers, wire cutters a camera and notebook to document
Hello chat moderator extraordinaire !
A5 hand tools leave the electric tools out for stoke thing else
A5 hands, heart and minds along with a couple of screwdrivers, scissors and tweasers should do it
A1: Sorry, no eats or drinks in the presence of tech
A5 Ts make sure to include implements for gross and fine motor work!
Exactly what I was thinking!! I also have a hammer and duct tape for small parts that are easy to lose.
I'm so on the wrong week's Qs 😂
harbor freight is pretty cheap. I also look at the clearance shelves at Home Depot
This might be a dumb Q, but when do you fit these projects in w/other demands! Does it make you all as crazy as it does me?
Yes. We have shorter days on Weds, I use that as an excuse to do different stuff.
I just visited a school this week that has an "innovation lab" as an elementary rotation class
A6: Safety tips ON THE FIRST DAY! Part of successful
A6 There definitely needs to be talk about tool safety, & using tools for their specific purpouse.
A6: set procedures/expectations and practice practice practice!
A6: also, if you treat Ss and the tasks with respect, they will follow your lead.
Also, could be a Ss chosen genius hour project?
A6 keep tools in one area. They cannot travel.
A6. Lay out expectations, model, & supervise! Be a meddler in the middle & do it with them!
I incorporate these projects into my lit units to stimulate Ss interest and induce creative thinking.
Awesome! Would've to hear more 😊
A6 I tell kids hey this is the hot end or sharp end? Take your time
I keep thinking what a great time this will be!
I have them hanging on my wall. Starts the conversation at least. ;)
is now trending in USA, ranking 50
A7 Bins? I'm thinkin' bins. But where do you put 'em?
A7. I'm thinking pizza boxes for smaller projects, bins & baskets for larger parts. Tubs w/lids for tools.
A7: how do you keep things from spiraling? Set a time limit, set goals, keep your workspace clean
Shelves or cabinets if you have them. Maybe a closet or filing cabinet depending on your space.
Check Pinterest. It will help. Classroom organization 101! https://t.co/e9ihFa1EDh
A7 Bins? I'm thinkin' bins. But where do you put 'em?
A7: In progress work boxes with lids! Stack and store.
A7 I'm thinking flat wrapping paper tubs with lid.
Sorry got distracted for a min
A7. Bins and boxes and baskets.
A7) Learned the hard way... We talk about the value of projects & that it's best if we can see how they fit back.
A7 containers, lots of containers
Yeah, it frees up time for planning/meetings.
OK, we have early release on Wed. about 8-10 times a year for PD.
A7 preferably clear plastic so they can see what's there without having to open them next time https://t.co/kX9Y3tHQhP
A7 containers, lots of containers
You are lovely and awesome, -ters! Thank you so much! And please dm me topic ideas.
Thanks Sean! I look forward to Tuesday nights!
