Eric, Elementary AP joining from Smithville, MO tonight. I saw @MrPStrunk was on and the intro to this chat looked amazing. Excited to check it out. #makeitreal
A1: Students do not learn from robots. That is why technology will never replace teachers. Vulnerability shows them that humans can make mistakes and learn and grow in the process! #GrowthMindset#makeitreal
A1: When we are vulnerable we allow others to see that we aren't perfect. We are all improvingand learning as we go. When we let this show I feel like others are more likely to take a risk. #makeitreal
A1 I think educators need to be vulnerable in order to realize that we don't know everything and we need to be life-long learners. Kids need to see us that way and know that we aren't perfect. #makeitreal
A1: We are role models for those that we serve. If we desire to our students to be real, empathetic, sensitive, we need to put these behaviors into practice first. #makeitreal
A1: When we're vulnerable, we make mistakes & shows that we are not perfect. We are able to model how we can learn from failing & that it's not the end of the world. We can show Ss how we stand up to adversity, & that they can, too. #makeitreal

A1: Many reasons. Ss won't learn the value of it if we don't model it. We can't be real people to them if we aren't vulnerable. I don't learn as much if I don't admit vulnerability academically because I ignore/refuse the help I need. #MakeItReal
I have this conversations with educators all the time who are fearful that more technology means less teachers. If anything, it means the opposite! #makeitreal#MaslowsBeforeBlooms

Great point! They can get information from robots, but they can't connect, develop, question and deeply learn from them. Except that Small Wonder robot. She taught us all so much, especially about vulnerability #makeitreal
for sure! I always talk about the college classes that I am taking and all of the continuing education credits that I take. The kids then know that I am in this with them! #makeitreal
A2. Being vulnerable is the first step and one of the precursors to building trust. Being vulnerable can show our weaknesses that others may not have known existed. #makeitreal
#makeitreal - A2 - Being vulnerable allows us to connect with more people and reach out for help when we need it. Unfortunately, some people take advantage of others vulnerabilities, so proceed with caution.
A2: This may be cliche considering the name of this chat but it makes you real and relevant. It allows you to be more relatable. I read to a class Monday and talked about needing tutoring to improve my academics. I didn't enjoy reading as a kid. #makeitreal
A2: You have the opportunity to GAIN learning from others. There are some with fixed mindsets who look down on those who ask for help... so I guess you might lose them! #makeitreal
A2: When I model being vulnerable, I show Ss that risk taking is okay to try because if they fail or mess up, Mrs. Steinbrink's been there and done that so it's cool. I don't expect perfection of Ss or colleagues, so I make sure they know that by sharing failures. #MakeItReal
A2: We all talk about how building relationships is the most important factor in classrooms and with colleagues. Those relationships can only be so deep without vulnerability. And that's not deep enough. #makeitreal
A2: In my opinion, we have nothing to lose. Vulnerability keeps us grounded, humble, and real. People that cannot come to terms with their fallibility are dangerous and not fun to work with/for. #makeitreal
A2: Being vulnerable ourselves can teach our students that it is okay to make mistakes and that actually making mistakes is critical in our learning process. #makeitreal
A2 I think there needs to be a balance between vulnerability and being confident in what you can do ... students donât go to teachers for help if their teacher canât do it. I donât want kids to question my ability because I am vulnerable #makeitreal

A1: Showing you are vulnerable shows that you are willing to put yourself out there to change, take risks and be courageous. It's what we want for our students. Show them your strength and what it means to be confident. #makeitreal
Here is a thought ... if a kid had to choose between the vulnerable teacher and the confident know it all which would they choose? I know in college I chose the teacher with the Dr beside their name over one without because they knew what they were taking about. #makeitreal

Even with the Dr. in front of my name I still don't know what I am talking about but the Dr. shows that I am willing to work as hard as I can to find out more about it! #makeitreal
Very interesting thought, Dennis. As I am processing this, I find myself asking, "Which one would I feel closer to? The confident one, or the one that exhibits vulnerability?" #makeitreal
I know that you can still be vulnerable even with that Dr. in front of your name. I think kids want to see teachers that are open, flexible and willing to learn right along side them. #makeitreal
A2: You gain the opportunity to learn, to grow and to be "real." You lose the chance to think you are perfect. It's too much pressure to think that way anyway! #makeitreal
Confident and Know It All aren't the same necessarily in my opinion. I prefer a confident and knowledgeable T who also shows vulnerability in that they take risks, handle it well when they fail, always seek to do better, & seek help when needed. Skills Ss need. #makeitreal
A3. Unfortunately, most of what they see on social media are highlight reels and end results. They rarely see or get to hear about the in between, the journeys. #makeitreal

A3: So many reasons: 1st, there's social media (w/c is permanent), 2nd, the community (w/c frowns upon failure or showing some sort of weakness); 3rd, the school that is competitive & penalizes vulnerability aka as failing in school or not showing academic prowess. #makeitreal
Let me rephrase that ... I was a history major ... I am not interested in sitting in a class with someone I donât trust to teach me something I donât know. ... and you know something ... kids lose respect for teachers who do not know their content. #makeitreal
A3. Unfortunately, most of what they see on social media are highlight reels and end results. They rarely see or get to hear about the in between, the journeys. #makeitreal
A3: They're afraid of being bullied. Bullying is at an all-time high! I have stinkin' 4 year-olds that are bullying. I nip that in the bud real damn quick! Not on my watch! #MakeItReal
A3: They are "on" 24/7. Everyone has a cellphone and is recording video for every fail. When failure occurs, it is the next thing that gets targeted on Snapchat. Dealing with this with our daughter's dance team. Her current mentality, "What's the point of trying?" #makeitreal
A3: There are a lot of pressures now which are different than previous gens faced. Their problems can follow them 24/7. They're expected to know more/do more at younger & younger ages. #TheStruggleIsReal for our Ss. #MakeItReal
A3: Kids think being vulnerable is a weakness. In a social media world it can be made to look like insecurity. We need to celebrate the students who put themselves out there, who take risks, who are willing to take a chance. Those are the dreamers and the doers. #makeitreal
Let's all thank @Jonharper70bd for helping us remember to BE vulnerable, to SEE vulnerability, and to EMBRACE who we and our students really are! Thanks for an excellent #Makeitreal chat!!!
My motto that I say repeatedly in class to my HS Ss is that we're going to get "comfortable with being uncomfortable" this year. I want Ss to push themselves in ways they haven't previously. Stretch. Grow. #MakeItReal
Oh no! The dance studio should be a safe space for learning. How do we improve our craft when every failure is criticized/ridiculed? I'm so sorry that your daughter is experiencing this. #makeitreal
Now we are talking semantics ... I donât take risks because I am vulnerable... I take risks because I know what I am doing and the kids will follow my lead because they trust me #makeitreal
I do not equate vulnerability with weakness or lack of knowledge. I do think 'know it all' can sometimes be an act, a facade. That type of approach pushes me away; too loud, too flashy. I choose the vulnerable teacher. #makeitreal
I do t care about âclosenessâ ... let me toss it back with ... which one would you trust more? My kids are close to me because they trust me and they know I will set them up to be successful #makeitreal
It's at her middle school -- which is surprising that there is not greater control. She's tough as nails, but the negative feedback is tough to stomach because she tends to be a perfectionist. #makeitreal
Sure, & I was responding to your chosen words. Glad you clarified, but there is the unknown factor inherent in risk taking, so that is a form of vulnerability. I tell Ss, âThis may fail, but weâre going to try something new.â May be a calculated risk, but still risky. #MakeItReal
