It's time for #formativechat! First question will be posted soon, but in the mean time, take off your shoes, relax, and introduce yourself! #studentled
Jessica Campbell joining from Kent, Ohio. I am working on getting my pre-k to 3rd grade teaching license, and am currently in an integrated preschool classroom. #formativechat
A1: Ss can lead learning through project-based learning and hyperdocs. Ss have more voice and choice in their learning journey when they have a path laid out for them, but no definitive map given to them. #formativechat
A1: Assigning each student a date to present a current event to the class is a simple way for students to lead learning. It is important to allow them to present the material in any way they would like..i.e. presentation, act as a news reporter, etc. #formativechat
A1: Giving students options on what material to cover first, and how they would like to go about it can be beneficial in involving them in decision making while sticking to mandated curriculum. #formativechat
A1: It is amazing what the Google platform offers Ss in leading & creating their learning. I'm amazed at the innovative ways I've seen teachers embed technology!
#formativechat
A1 Give them control of a small group & let them lead there If we want them to become natural leaders we need to give them safe, controllable situations to get comfortable #formativechat
A1 - I done some flipped learning where Ss took more control and ownership of their learning. I also have use games like #minecraftedu to let Ss lead their learning. #formativechat
A1- Let ss explore the content we don't need to lead with direct instruction every day! Have ss take the responsibility. We need to tell ss figure it out. They are able to figure things they enjoy doing on their own. What if we used this expectation in school?
#formativechat
A1: Ask students to make choices in their reading material and the format they use to display their knowledge. Give them a standard and ask them to choose their own method to illustrate application and synthesis. #formativechat
Take a step back and become a facilitator instead of a direct instructor, give an open ended task and let the students share their approach #formativechat#theNEISDway
A1 Developing groups and allowing students to lead the learning really pushes the learning. Allowing them to make decisions for rewards or for discussion topics promotes enthusiasm. #formativechat
A1: Ss voice and choice promotes those independent thinkers and doers in our future communities. If Ss get opportunities to lead their learning now; as adults, Ss will know how to do this without waiting for a prompt or question. #formativechat
Currently have been using mastery and #flipclass for my courses. They control pacing (to a point) and choice in activity. Next unit is project based so they control everything but the standards. #formativechat
I love this idea. It's also teaching them great skills like time management, public speaking, & other executive functioning skills that we often forget to help shape! #formativechat
A1: Student-led instruction helps prove the adage that if you can teach the content to someone else, chances are that you have learned it deeply. Peer review is a nice activity for this. #formativechat
A1: My students have used many formats from kahoots, quizizz, quizlet, recap. They create their own reviews or even intro lessons. I want to work more with flipgrid since we are a microsoft school! #formativechat
Take a step back and become a facilitator instead of a direct instructor, give an open ended task and let the students share their approach #formativechat#theNEISDway
A1 Also through doing #pbl Ss take over and teach the class and me too, about their topic, we learn about #teachsdgs and it is great to see them leading and learn together #formativechat
You've got this Kristen! My October isn't looking too hot either and I'm determined to come out on the other side!! #chocolateandwinehelp#formativechat
Students who make personal connections to the content will learn to view how the content fits into their learning narratives. Best way to achieve this is to grant them multiple opportunities to exhibit agency over the content and their learning activity. #formativechat
A1 Last year I had students create a video with a Math strategy that they used this cycle, so another student next cycle can learn from it #formativechat
#formativechat A1: Ss can lead learning through self efficacy, Ss agency, choice in what to learn and how to show that learning. I have used describe a bio process in w/e media you want: song, music video, SitComm sketch, Slides, poem, etc. I'd like to try a Genious hr.
Just watched an awesome use of @Buncee to do newsletters, including the Ss sharing their works and talking about it, very nice way to send the info #formativechat
Students who lead instruction must have Ts who are comfortable ceding control to them. These are confident Ts who firmly believe in their pedagogical approach. #formativechat
A2a: For these activities, I look for student choice, clear expectations, provide multiple resources and options, and an opportunity for the Ss to share what they learned. #formativechat#studentled
A2: When Ss lead learning, especially in discussions, I will only interject if there is a misunderstanding in what they are saying. Otherwise, I let them take off and lead. #formativechat
A2 I lean in and listen for new ideas, the creative ways they come up with to practice the material, and how they teach and guide one another #formativechat
A2 I look for Ss to communicate in diff ways w/diff sized groups Leading is communicating, Ss need to get past obstacle of "I can't" & get to the point where they say "I will" #formativechat
A2b: Obstacles include not enough resources and time, unclear expectations, an unchallenging activity. Avoid these with planning ahead and being flexible. Allow yourself and Ss not to always get it right. #formativechat#studentled
What an awesome idea! I've never considered students being an active part of making their own class newsletter. It's a great connection tool for parents & recap for students! #formativechat
Teachers have to be comfortable with letting go of control when students take the lead, which can be an obstacle. It's all about baby steps #formativechat
I try to do the same, only step in if needed, or I hear something that they are misunderstanding, and then I get back to just moving around #formativechat
A2a. For my #pbl units I start them with a project proposal to cover their standards. Then they do #flipclass videos for lower level info. They have choices to do my activities (all Ss do labs) or research the other levels of proficiency scales. #formativechat
A2: Did the student apply the information in a way that shows understanding? Was the student able to synthesize the information and extend it? Can the student explain the information in a coherent and clear manner. #formativechat
A2 I circle my room like I coach. I'm constantly looking for natural leaders that I can lean on to push the others. In my room this enthusiasm is like electricity and I make sure the circuit remains unbroken. #formativechat
#formativechat A2: My assignments have had rubrics associated with them, pretty detailed ones, looking forward going to try the rubric from @cultofpedagogy the obstacles include Ss choosing slides (ppt)
A2: I could see some obstacles to Ss leading their learning would be the buy-in by the T. I really had to see it be successful in my classroom and take that leap into the unknown. It can be scary the first time, but then it’s value is seen so much. #formativechat
A1: I look for the ss in the corners who are trying to blend in. You don’t blend in during my class. I will pull you aside and make you successful on your own. I actually did it today! I look to see who leads and who enables. #formativechat
A2: Perhaps one must look for ways that student-led instruction connects previous knowledge to current content. Making connections and synthesizing new information. #formativechat
A2: look for students to show an understanding of what they are teaching. I give them the objective and am available for questions as they're creating the lesson. Promote discussions and activities throughout their lesson. Obstacle=time :( #formativechat
A2: Did the student apply the information in a way that shows understanding? Was the student able to synthesize the information and extend it? Can the student explain the information in a coherent and clear manner. #formativechat
A2- Time and classroom management can be an obstacle because teachers need to set up their classroom effectively. Have check ins during the class period. Make students show evidence of what they are working on to overcome this obstacle.
#formativechat
A2: Intentionally highlighting student's strengths. When you allow deficits to filled in by peers they are able to reach a level adults often overlook. Amazing things happen when Ss work for a common goal #formativechat
A2 -Look for engaged learning and attempts in learning. Some Ss don't have the skills/motivation to self regulate and self learn. For some quite a shift in their mindset. Try to give choice/voice, use formative assessment, celebrate mistakes, & build relationships #formativechat
A1: I give ss stations. I start by doing over acronym “Groups” that explains behav. In groups. Activities are things that anyone can do, even guess. Sort cards. Sort actual examples of substances, etc. I give them a chance to do alone and then I guide. #formativechat
A2: Having clear, transparent parameters might help students lead the learning. Working within a framework that still celebrates and honors their creativity. #formativechat
A2: are the asking good Qs? do these Qs lead to other Qs? are they challenging each other? do they examine different perspectives? Do they explore the voices that are missing? Does the learning lead to #socialchange? #formativechat
A2: Perhaps one must look for ways that student-led instruction connects previous knowledge to current content. Making connections and synthesizing new information. #formativechat
Seems as though a common theme is giving Students choices, let them decide the activities, for Ts to move aside and facilitate, and add in activ that promote diff levels of interaction, debates, #pbl#formativechat
A2 I want to make sure that all voices are represented and all ss feel valued. To help combat this I allow ss to present in whatever format they feel most comfortable with. #formativechat
A2: you have to play to their strengths but also support them in closing the gap in terms of their needs -integrate the two through #inquiry and open ended Qs across the curriculum. #formativechat
A2: Ss need to focus on Assessment As Learning - what are my next steps? How do I get there? What supports and resources do I need? Who can I go to for those supports/resources? #formativechat
Perhaps an obstacle to student-led instruction is the challenge to convince those introverted, reserved Ss that they have as much to share as the more extroverted, outgoing Ss. #formativechat
#formativechat I like to look for those that continually question, wonder & ask if they can approach an answer in a discussion or varied way. Obstacles usually involve time constraints or going off the mandated curriculum too far
A2: look for students to show an understanding of what they are teaching. I give them the objective and am available for questions as they're creating the lesson. Promote discussions and activities throughout their lesson. Obstacle=time :( #formativechat
What an awesome way to replace the "I can't"s. Peers encouraging one another & assisting in problem solving will build that strong community to squash those "can't"s #formativechat
A2: I look for preparedness through guided practice. A huge obstacle that I would have would be students being giggly at times, but at the end, they would always appreciate the empowerment #formativechat
A3: Getting Ss onboard with leading their learning is a mind shift for them as well. Ss need to understand that the task (hyperdoc, etc.) has been made for them to demonstrate what they know with some scaffolding and supports. Knowing that can give them confidence. #formativechat
A3 In past 5 years, I have taken Ss to #edtech conferences and they present on their favs for learning, #pbl, #gbl and #stuvoice , they share their interests and passion for learning #formativechat
A3: Start with something fun and manageable. Small group presentations on a fun topic is motivating. Learner Profiles are also way for them Ss to find their strengths in how they can Share what they learned. Technology adds structure and creativity. #formativechat#studentled
Agreed! Use #formative assessment to make the most of the time...get a closer look, modify pacing and support students as they take new risks! #formativechat
A2- Time and classroom management can be an obstacle because teachers need to set up their classroom effectively. Have check ins during the class period. Make students show evidence of what they are working on to overcome this obstacle.
#formativechat
Oh our dear friend time seems to always be against us! But building that structure & community approach seems to multiply time into working for you #formativechat
A2: you need to give them a big idea to ground the learning and give them an overarching open ended Q that will lead them to ask more Qs - start w/ See Think Wonder and let them lead their own journey - I used 4 types of #inquiry in my classroom for Ss to succeed. #formativechat
A3- We need to move from I do, We Do, you do TO YOU do. TS need to assist students as needed and give immediate feedback. Technology can help ss with exploring, getting feedback, and working collaboratively.
#formativechat
Students require time + space to build their own discourse communities without the Authority stepping in. This is good for social-emotional learning + building speaking + listening skills. I've had success with Harkness discussions where I usually try sketchnoting! #FormativeChat
A3 Technology can be a huge help in students leading learning, often they are shy to present on their own but if they can make a video, game, or powerpoint they are more confident in sharing information. #formativechat
A3: Give the students some examples and the freedom to make mistakes and grow from them. Be there to support them and to give them a nudge when they are stuck. #formativechat

A3. It may be overly simplistic but I just tell them we are 50-50. I’ll give you the foundation and you have to apply it in many different ways but pick what’s best for you. #formativechat
A3: Begin with small activities that are low-risk. Set clear parameters or an explanation of what the end product should look like. Make it authentic — don’t bait and switch where you promise student-led learning but then muddy it up with influence. #formativechat
Yes, have done it for past 4 or so years, great to have them lead sessions full of educators, including admin,. I also have 2 students contributing a chapter each to my upcoming books :) #formativechat
Google Classroom to house assignments, @Seesaw to share with an authentic audience, @Flipgrid to reflect, and a multitude of other apps to show their learning! #formativechat
#formativechat A3: start slow and incorporate it over time. #SOLE is great and other Ss generated content is great. Tech helps esp. with group work since you can teleconference with group members!
A3: Authentic conversations w/Ss about "ownership." They need to understand it's not about the Ts having all the answers and the Ss being passive recipients of information. #formativechat
A2: well all know tech is the tool, it doesn't replace good pedagogy - use tech to connect w/ other classes around the country& the globe to examine perspectives and #socialjustice issues - become social change agents! #formativechat
A3: Ss are able to move about the room when creating lessons. I collaborate with other Ts so they can go into our makerspace and science lab as well. We are a team for students to create! Tech gives all Ss a voice,in a variety of ways! #formativechat
A3 - Make learning a journey/conversation rather than a destination. Use tech to provide a variety of ways to show understanding, promote conversations, solve wicked problems, & give effective and timely feedback. Find @goformative has helped in alot in this area. #formativechat
A3 also in groups, or station rotation, some Ss take the lead and work with their peers, and then the other Ss also become more comfortable #formativechat
Thanks, Lisa! Yes, we aim to help Ts find the right balance of giving students the support they need and letting them take ownership of their learning! #formativechat
Yes, and share our mistakes and steps forward too, we struggle and they need to see that everyone does, and it is what we do after that matters #formativechat
A3b: Tech can help but remember lots of teachers have trouble using it effectively. Tech should be the cherry on top, not the whole cake! #formativechat
Modeling for students can help them feel confident, but having them go for it and bring them to catch them when needed makes every opportunity even easier for them, just do it! #formativechat#theNEISDway
A3: I never gave them my opinion - told them my opinion didn't matter - what do YOU think? They often think what the T thinks is right so I never offered up my thoughts - I facilitated the conversation. #formativechat
If you encourage students to lead instruction, then it would logically follow that they should be able to design and implement their own assessment of that instruction. Assessment for learning at its best!! #formativechat
Many students are also doing their own mind maps + we compare what we heard + how we processed it. We also sometimes do mind maps to build connections among ideas, concepts + texts, which also make their imaginations visible. Here are examples from Persepolis. #FormativeChat
So true. When I was in school, Ts knew everything and did not allow the Ss to think. Love how the shift happened to allow Ss to feel in control as well. #formativechat

As we wrap up #formativechat, we'd love to give a huge shout-out to first-time guest host...@DeaverDean! He put some really great Q's together and did an awesome job facilitating discussion!

A3 One of the ways I get my ELs to lead is by having a different student pick a current events article and then take charge of the discussion. This has worked very well. #formativechat
Thank you for a wonderful chat. Again, my Monday is complete. I enjoyed an engaging conversation with a multifaceted PLN. Thank you so much! Have a great rest of the week. #formativechat
We love this idea! It gives students the opportunity to visualize their next steps in becoming a more independent learner and reflect on it too! #fullcircle#formativechat
One of the goals I set out for students at the beginning of class is to work at making meaning without me + to trust their interpretations + ideas. Rewarding students for agreeing with us creates compliance, but it also creates problematic deference to Authority. #FormativeChat
A3: I used to teach my Ss how to give each other feedback after presentations (i.e. "I like how well organized your talk was.") This gives Ss another leadership skill to practice. Then they also lead the feedback. #formativechat
Me too, has been a constant for years in my classroom, so many uses and was glad to finally meet up with them at ISTE this summer, so supportive! #formativechat

A3.Our pupils forget most of what we teach them. They will however remember us their teachers forever.Lets be good and kind to them.A kind word can last a lifetime #formativechat
Trying to make sure it's something that can spark their interest, so that they can take ownership in the outcome. Utilizing the technology that they are familiar with and introducing them to other technology. #formativechat#theNEISDway
A3 - part 2 edtech can help teachers design student-led learning, but so can books, libraries, non-smart white boards, the more binary forms of edtech. More crucial than the tech is the mindset of the teacher & the culture of the classroom #formativechat
This is huge in @Skyline_WC, the peer writing center I direct. We're able to build meaningful relationships through our writing collaborations with students in our school + with our work in the community, relationships which have helped narrow achievement gaps. #FormativeChat
Great point about bait and switch! To me, one of the main benefits of letting students lead learning is allowing students to feel proud of what they accomplish. And we can't manufacture that. #formativechat
