Hi all and welcome to ! Tonight we're talking innovation in HASS! Tell us who you are, where you're from, and what you teach!
-
-
Hi all! My name is Marco. I'm a teacher from Sydney!
-
Q1 What does 'innovation' mean to you?
-
A1 To me, innovation is finding something new, trying it, testing it, and then changing it up!
-
Q2 What innovative practices do you use in the teaching and learning of HASS?
-
A2 I use Flipped Learning, and am pushing Ss to take more risks in using tech (3D printing).
-
Hello! Anne from Sydney here... sorry I'm late - dinner didn't go according to plan
-
I guess it depends on how you define "innovative"... I use a range of things depending on the needs of my classes
-
Q3 How do you teach your students to be innovative in HASS?
-
A3 1/2 I have been using Genius Hour more and more, particularly in Commerce and Business Studies
-
A3: By questioning. Everything. Why? Who? What? Sounds old skool, but new for a lot of students
-
A3 2/2 My Ss are coming up with new ideas and solutions to problems!
-
Have integrated this concept into the historical investigation in Year 11 History - always pursue the passion project
-
I might, but then might be old hat by some! Really emphasising student voice/choice in HSC options2 encourage ownership
-
Q4 What role does 'traditional' teaching play in an innovative world?
-
A4 You can't remove traditional methods from teaching... need to have foundational skills as well as 21st century skills
-
Q5 How do you work with other KLAs in order to increase innovation in your school?
-
A5 I work closely with RE, TAS and English to try and build a bit more steam with some activities.
-
A5 - Looking at outcomes mapping to see where we can combine skills and reduce assessment - reduce role of content.
-
The last question for the night is coming up soon!
-
Q6 How can we, as educators, ensure that HASS keeps 'up to date' with new innovations?
-
A6 There's so many new technologies that lend themselves to the HASS subjects, need to tap into them
-
A6 Google Expeditions springs to mind!
-
That's all we have time for tonight on ! Join us next month on Thurs 27 April @ 7pm (Sydney) where we'll have a Geography focus!
