So right! I feel like it drives everything I do

Q1: Social justice, human storytelling, understanding the struggle, creating the future.
. Love it! How do you do that in the classroom
A1 obligations to others...at all levels--in your class, neighborhood, town, etc. But we've forgotten the "demos" in democracy
. oohh--explain further. How does that fit in?
Hellooo! Awesome 2 see you!
A1 I think of empowerment. I think of civics education as it relates to self, others and the world.
A1 stewardship of Earth, making the world better, improving lives
A1 First thing that comes to mind is: "Shouldn't that be Civic Education?"
With many hands, ! Glad to be learning with you all tonight. https://t.co/Yc0cwZbZJu
And holding down the southern Maine DT in edu fort https://t.co/tGlBL8UrSd

Is this something you bring to your school?
A1 teaching young children how to find their voice in a group and that they can enact change
Need to understand our planet to be an educated voter or policy influencer/maker
A1 I cld swear I took Civics w. Mr. Grod via yet I only remember Grod, mclaughlin Groupm & NOT chewing gum :)
A1 The role you play within your nation. How active or inactive a citizen you are.
We are trying, esp in 8th grade US history. The evolving essential question: "What does it mean to be free in America?"
how do you bring the "people" back into democracy?
Wait goes to show me… That was Government… No Civics Class :( It was the 90s
A1 It’s been ages [4 decades] since I took a civics class. I recall lots of reading, discussion. Asked my 19 yo.. not too excited
Yes, it is work to stay informed!
A1 Civics Ed, understanding other's point of view, hearing opinions, bldg your own beliefs, positive agent of change.
Civics education to me is about listening and reflecting more than talking and reacting.
Ok; topic too great not to change plans so...what's Q1 again? :)
Love the idea of young Ss enacting change. How do you do that in your class?
A1: Love hearing the broad definitions! Seems can get caught in narrower definition- gov, policy, big issues, etc
A1 Teaching kids pronounce, often and well, what Martin Buber called the primary word I-You. https://t.co/Lqa1TMBTl7
I'd love to hear how you frame this with Ss.
Great question. As a former 8th grade teacher, I love being able to connect today w/the past
A1 Learning how to function as a purposeful, contributing citizen by learning how meaningful purposeful govt works
A1 With each of my kids I felt there was a -major- disconnect with what the teacher felt about civics & what kids did.
lisa from ny here. Civics is about empowering Ss so they can make positive changes in the world A1
Boom! https://t.co/SRfjc8E8dN
A1 Learning how to function as a purposeful, contributing citizen by learning how meaningful purposeful govt works
A1. Empowering students to find their voice, then use it, to positively impact their communities...what all education should be.
A1 ok reading other Peeps tweets… the word Civics has zero meaning to me or my previous education I wonder what that says?
A1 Civics class was Mr Pelletier opening my eyes to how political systems work; I'll always appreciate
Yes, and it's such an important habit for Ss to learn
so import. So much in past 30 years written on loss of civic life, institutions, functions, etc. Need to recapture
Hmmm not good. My kids didn’t take civics.
giving Ss voice from day one: create rules/consequences, classroom set up, define how we can help health of Hudson River
I like that. Listen first to the people in your house, your class, your life. Then work outward from there...
I wonder HMW encourage others to see primary Ss as agents of change?
Q2: Broad definitions awesome! How can we support across the curriculum & grade levels?
So what is the difference between a civics class and a government class? Or should there be one?
horrible mistake when state of ME de-valued social studies & civics classes imploded
Yea & I wonder if I use, understand, & connect w/ a different word Its all abt the framing Whats another word 4 Civics?
A1 When we teach kids to know others and allow themselves to be known, we've helping to create civic-minded humans.
part 2: then identify who we can lobby to enact positive change for the Hudson River Valley
A2: I'm not sure of the broad answer to that question, but right now I am focused on ways to use data science for this purpose.
And as a primary school teacher, how might I bring S voice & empowerment to my Ss?
...hmmm sounds like what being an English major meant to me. Coming to know others (characters) and, th… https://t.co/ac0KP4i5T7
A1 When we teach kids to know others and allow themselves to be known, we've helping to create civic-minded humans.
A1 When students stop to reflect on how they'd like to be treated and how they actually treat others--then we're moving!
A2 we should focus on life centered issues. Thinking @ identity, leadership, disruption as it relates to all disciplines.
oh man, yes! They often have amazing ideas and the courage to say what we don't
I agree! Cuz it comes off as "old-fashioned" or not relevant today when S voice is EXTREMELY relevant
A2: You’ve opened definition 2 S voice, listening, reflecting, impact, enact change, etc. Yes!
A2 Debate or oppy for diff answers in PBL. Leads to listening, understanding, hopefully models adulthood.
Nope not it… you guys following this thread?
Share stories often, consistently w primary Ss as agents of change angle, not merely cute photo ops … https://t.co/Md4MVDhEUR
I wonder HMW encourage others to see primary Ss as agents of change?
A1 Learning how gov works, checks & balances, petitions, debate, and action to improve communities.
I think of 's Govt. class that used to "do civics" rather than read about it
Yes! Can u give some specific ways u bring this 2 ur classroom? https://t.co/wfBIKHvcrb
A2 we should focus on life centered issues. Thinking @ identity, leadership, disruption as it relates to all disciplines.
I like global literacy but I think that not everyone would implicitly include civics?
While many schools have dropped as a class, the responsibility to cultivate a "well-educated citizenry" falls upon us all
Gr8 Q A reframe is in order
A2 find what ss are passionate about. Let their voice lead the way. Ss need to learn from a place of passion not a worksheet.
I see too many people with a poor und of gov which leads them to make harsh statements and take rash actions. Sad. .
A2 Teach Ss to make claim-based arguments. Offer projects that amplify student voice, through process and final product.
what? You don't like cute kids? :)
Totally! I am such a proponent of picture books as a method to change the world
This! https://t.co/kfrCIeSyOK
A2 find what ss are passionate about. Let their voice lead the way. Ss need to learn from a place of passion not a worksheet.
How much influence do Ss have in your classroom? What do they know they can change?
Ela, just joining what looks like another fantastic from Cambridge, MA!
A2 We can empower Ss community based problem solving AND learn abt how local community systems work at same time
I think it misses the mark What is civics in the 1st place?
Existing=2 way street. Sharing in responsibility of society. > 1word, but making me think!
A2 Provide an authentic model. S generated bills, presented in front of S congress, discussed, voted on & carried out by Ss.
a2 get students out of the classroom and involved in community
Gotta train students to strain to hear well. As our culture gets louder, this skill becomes increasingly rare.
A2 agree, comm. based. ed=civic, but most Ts don't have time to get out of class. Community of school, or on line civics...
I love how you get the Ss involved in the community. What are some ways your Ss help others?
I just realized my “nope not it” sounds like I know the “right answer I don’t What is Civics?
back to my earlier tweet; it's about citizenry & how community fworks
Mary, I think it’s about Supporting, guiding,inspiring,S voice &impact
NO worries! Lets keep brainstorming.
A1: for K-2, I teach Ss how to “protest”--boycott, letters etc. I think it’s a life skill that Ss need to be taught
Who says that? How do you know? I mean where is Chamber of Commerce? :)
Protest school lunch! Green Bologna.
Awesome ! We asked Ss to think about all aspects of school. What could change? Ideas shared in classes, 1 bill from each.
not following the chamber of commerce angle, but I know bc uh I took it?
I like that even better: "Think about all aspects of school...." Was it awesome...? https://t.co/UPvEph8HKc
Awesome ! We asked Ss to think about all aspects of school. What could change? Ideas shared in classes, 1 bill from each.
Is the new 1960s PeaceLove? I feel the word Civic is not accurate/current
A2 I’d suggest a reframe.. What is/are learning objectives? How will we know when we’re there?
I got myself in trouble when my 1st graders went home & started boycotting homeroom/rules etc.
I should have qualified; in Maine there is bc of SATs being used as the HS measure of student achievement
, some went for immediate gratification - choc milk, hats, etc. Some requested more visits from adm, equipment, new units
Q3: defines as T'ing S how 2 find their voice in a & enact change. Brainstorm how u would do this
Cool—so they're considering their school community as their "sphere of influence" here? Or is ti their classroom?
yes, Ss do not comport themselves as did in olden days!
Innnnteresting. Which of those got voted into "law"...? https://t.co/XClIYYpVJp
, some went for immediate gratification - choc milk, hats, etc. Some requested more visits from adm, equipment, new units
Yes! Connection 2 real world! https://t.co/ZMW2RKC0wK
Awesome ! We asked Ss to think about all aspects of school. What could change? Ideas shared in classes, 1 bill from each.
Thanks, Thomas! This is awesome
They are considering the whole school comm. Each class discusses many ideas but forwards 1 bill to S congress.
Many policy makers, bid to compete ideologically & politically rather than practically have lost sight
A3 get out into neighborhood community action centers, identify areas of interest, find ways to engage, go!
This year we plan to work with refugee community in Atlanta; gov class plan to be active with voting
Interesting. HMW make authentically questioning our norms the norm? So it doesn't have to be protest?
I go back to data science. Teach kids how to use data to strengthen (or change) their views, and then create action plans.
A2 Seems like you’d want to start with the easiest things to change: self. Takes effort to get many others on board.
A3 teach the power of the persuasive essay. The pen is mightier!
Equip for recesses, new options for lit reading, longer recesses. S who created bill needed to meet w/ adm to plan.
Yes, since protest is seen as neg. Instead it should just be S voice
Awesome! Real world learning, Ss enacting change, having impact. https://t.co/AmvnYEoM3n
This year we plan to work with refugee community in Atlanta; gov class plan to be active with voting
I think CofC as econ dev. Ministries, non-profits engage in service
kids would rather be right than be enlightened. that shows need for knowledge of ego.
Great convos led by Ts that encourage learning? They know already. Learn by Ss doing much better.
Hehe, it's hard keeping people at the center, even for grownups!
A modest proposal, this.... https://t.co/OjrarTnCQ0
A3 teach the power of the persuasive essay. The pen is mightier!
I LOVE that. https://t.co/WitNc8lKSJ
Equip for recesses, new options for lit reading, longer recesses. S who created bill needed to meet w/ adm to plan.
civics=Ustanding citizenship role in decision making&problem solving n comm
Planning to do this in a PBL coming up next month!
A3 w primary Ss, think school level change. HMW eliminate plastic packaging at school? Then expand beyond school walls
I'm also not seeing them, not sure why.
Sorry. Not using slides, so not as obvious. Please retweet! https://t.co/FdkJYf28Wc
I'm also not seeing them, not sure why.
A3 What would it look like if American Revolution was scaled down to fit into a classroom? Lots for Ss to protest..
Clever! https://t.co/Hg0MiXKW0D
A3 What would it look like if American Revolution was scaled down to fit into a classroom? Lots for Ss to protest..
Just trying to spread the love so we can help my friend!
how abt = identifying spheres of pwr in communities & how they intersect
Gr3 is creating, via PBL, a tool to empower citizens to act on their rights
Get kids to start legit conversations with everyone in the community and document it all!
You honor me. Last year was.... This year will be a step forward. Channel my inner this time....
Power design thinking truth https://t.co/9b1cuSiyqV
Hehe, it's hard keeping people at the center, even for grownups!
A3 Get out of their way… Leave them some oxygen. Be comfortable in silence and not knowing where they are headed. Fluid Learning
. that's awesome. Did the Ss come up with this?
This reminded me—2nd graders doing "HMW improve recess" made TONS of rules. Rules are OK when *they* make 'em!
Yes, but.. something’s missing. Crawl>?>Walk. Fall. Civics is messy. +
Yes, but.. something’s missing. Crawl>?>Walk. Fall. Civics is messy. +
A3 Give 'em a platform--a podcast, for instance--and have 'em fill it up with real, important convos w/people in your community.
A3 Visualize spheres of influence: Have Ss draw circles: what I can impact, who can impact me, look for overlaps
offering students exposure to conflicting views on an issue.
I think it gets down to a teacher’s tolerance of mess. is about ideas>prototyping>reflect..
Driving Q to understand citizenship and government roles
Any one else using PBL or DT to provide opp for Ss to change the world? Like & ?
Build a Why Ladder after creating a community bug list: what bugs you? then 5 tiers of why; try to uncover core
Hmmm… Are we meeting Ss where they are or where we want them to already be? Rushing Development
Q4: WE'VE BROUGHT UP Qs HAD ABOUT THIS CHALLENGE. How do we brainstorm ideas when many definitions? Important convo
BOOM! Just one of many reasons I love this guy! https://t.co/EMIeJ1c6sz
A2 We can empower Ss community based problem solving AND learn abt how local community systems work at same time
If you want to teach civics, you must teach students to be brave enough to meet everyone, and kind enough to listen deeply.
Totally kicking myself in butt for than inspired need identifying in Pop Cult today: hmw use music to solve probs
I use PBL, trying student-centered this yr
A3 What music do Ss listen to today that protests stuff? Sounds like a great opportunity to start a conversation.
& for so many Ss, this is a great entry point into real issues.
yes and experience the imbalance of representation amongst citizens of the community
HUGE Q! Need to define terms in order to identify problem & create solutions … https://t.co/05hEKEEAB0
Q4: WE'VE BROUGHT UP Qs HAD ABOUT THIS CHALLENGE. How do we brainstorm ideas when many definitions? Important convo
A4: Does there have to be consensus, or can we be comfortable with letting students determine how they want to define "civics"?
Love the connection to student interests
A3 largest city in US, horrible oil spill not being cleaned up. Why? Impoverished neighborhood w no voice https://t.co/jmeEZ46wma
You would CRUSH this...! https://t.co/zZSDipwmEh
A3 Give 'em a platform--a podcast, for instance--and have 'em fill it up with real, important convos w/people in your community.
Sorry 2b a stick in the mud What is Civics? Is it a class? Mindset? an action? An aspect 2 every day learning? Why is it Siloed?
yes and help Ss understand their roles in our community. Great to see you here tonight Thomas
just have to be intentional; Ss need identify; then Ts bring in govt/comm officials who work those probs
So true https://t.co/4kKHAnWNPP
If you want to teach civics, you must teach students to be brave enough to meet everyone, and kind enough to listen deeply.
This. https://t.co/Minq4ev7xB
I think it gets down to a teacher’s tolerance of mess. is about ideas>prototyping>reflect..
Dunno the answer about being there or rushing. Let’s risk an and see?
What does “Up to T” mean? Maybe make it a simulation rather than real-world?
T begins by finding someone he's afraid of & bringing that person to class for a convo. Model courage & convos!
Im all4 spaghetti on the wall I C more & more kids knowledge base expanding beyond their yrs… Is that ok
A4 agree that w/o def of Civics, no use. So 1 primary duty is to speak up when we see something wrong and ask ?s. ...
MC, You Rock! you've provoked a lot of thought at the base of the convo. reminding me to focus on context of the HMW
LOVE this topic! Try this: The Protest Movement: 10 Best Political Protest Songs of the 60s https://t.co/2glcg7tuRg
Love the connection to empathy!! That was supposed to be a theme of one of the Qs tonight. :) … https://t.co/Cjh6jGy1BG
If you want to teach civics, you must teach students to be brave enough to meet everyone, and kind enough to listen deeply.
I think of Kinderland Once Developmental Now majority Academic What’s the purpose? Benefit?
A4 so any activity that makes space for S Voice/action/ideas as agents of action=w/i scope of
IMO, it's all about how we prepare & empower our Ss to find their voice when they see injustice
A4 I’d suggest brainstorming away from school/classroom. Maybe a bar? Someplace where one can talk about any thing.
good, they researched and applied the principles of American democracy to construct a new Syrian gov't.
A4 Where did the American Revolution conspirators meet to brainstorm how to throw off the British yoke? There.
Yes! And to identify that injustice through a well-developed sense of for others. https://t.co/BbDbzTfUd0
IMO, it's all about how we prepare & empower our Ss to find their voice when they see injustice
FINALE: We’re getting close 2end. Thx 4 ‘messy convo’ Truly awesome ideas posted 2nite! Pls share & post!
My music T did a great project w/Ss where they learned protest songs & then wrote their own
