#txed Jerry Toups HS Math Tr from the Richmond, TX area. Blessed to be here! Great day today! I was able to give away my posters to my Ss. #BEHOLD! The winner of the greatest classroom poster in TEXAS!
Hi there TxEd!! Audrey Ash here from Burkburnett ISD enjoying American Ninja Warrior after a day of tennis on HOT Texas courts with my girlies! Ready to go back to work tomorrow! #TxEd
A1: Do they love kids? Will they be a fit for our vision and mission? Are they a team player? Do they have a growth mindset? You can teach someone TEKS but these things are hard to teach! #txed
Hello! I am currently finishing up an education masters program at the University of Michigan to become an elementary teacher! Excited to be in this chat! #TxEd@lkolb
A1: Are they passionate about kids? I like asking questions that focus on how they show their passion in their work. You can feel their energy and passion come out when you bring up why they want to teach or get them talking about their content. #TXed
A1 I look for three things, no four, in a teacher-candidate. 1. Love love love working with kids. 2. Integrity. 3. Love to work. 4. Love to work with colleagues. #TxEd
A1 can you work within our vision and support it? Do you want to learn alongside us? I can teach you the mechanics but I can’t teach you to love kids or the work involved #TXed
#txed A1 Their compassion for the kids. Education is about the kids, not about the employees. #AlwaysBelieve This is one of the posters I gave away today to a winning St.
A1: I want to know that a candidate will match with the vision of the district, stay away from negative pockets, and create relationships with kids. You can tell A LOT from discussions about how to support difficult students. True colors come through most often. #TXed

A1 What makes them passionate about the profession and evidence of collaboration with others. Whether it is their first year or tenth year teaching, there are numerous opportunities for growth and teamwork they can show that speak volumes about their mindset and passion. #TxEd
Hello! I am currently finishing up an education masters program at the University of Michigan to become an elementary teacher! Excited to be in this chat! #TxEd@lkolb
I always ask...what are the 3 most important things to you about teaching and why do you want to teach here? (They need to have shown some effort to at least looked up my campus and be able to speak to it at some capacity) #TXed
A1b....If building relationships is not in their answers..the interview is over. We can teach content...and want people that want to teach kids....ALL kids! #TXed
A2: the candidate had well thought out answers aligned to our vision. They had done their homework, brought in examples, and knew what we were about and where we were going. Their passion for curriculum came out and you were drawn into them. #TXed
A2: I love the personal moments when we get to "be ourselves" and crack up for a moment. That's been my fav part of our teacher interviews this past month... Those times to see the candidates at their core. #txed
A2-As an interviewer, I try to make the atmosphere relaxing, making sure their is clarity in the questions.
As an interviewee, I act like the person or committee are long lost cousin that I have not seen in awhile. #TXed
A2 Getting to have an open and honest conversation that stemmed from an interview question. Making a relational connection in a way that you get the feeling you already know each other or at least think on the same wavelength. #txed
A2 once upon a time I interviewed for a job I didn’t even know was a possibility... I was comfortable, made to feel human and welcome...@PrincipalOgg and @PrinSchwartz#txed
A2: More personal than drill and kill. People smiled, laughed, and had convos....not just checking off questions. Giving personal examples to back up answers...shows authenticity. #TXed
A2 When I interviewed for my current Reading specialist position. It was memorable because they called me from our 3rd grade Under the Big Top day (where I was dressed like a clown!) to come talk to the super. and asst. super about changing positions. #txed
A2 All the people in the room. It’s an opportunity to work with your principal, grade level, department, etc to share your passion for hiring quality, passionate educators. When you find your next colleague and you all give each other the “look” is an irreplaceable feeling #TXed
A2: I was being interviewed and I was given the freedom to share my digital resume instead of using the traditional resume format. It felt much more comfortable!! #TxED
How funny! My first reading specialist interview was FOUR hours long, I felt so drained yet so confident that they saw me for my talents...I had to teach a lesson, desegregate data, present about balanced literacy, write a professional email and have a 1:3 interview #txed
#txed A2 One of the great moments of my career was when the Head Coach of GRHS pointed to my #PentagonT on my resume (attached) and asked "Are you this guy?" I was probably hired on the spot. The POWER of social media. Use it to promote POSITIVE! #AlwaysBelieve
I AM a teacher. I’m also a lifetime gun owner, and retired service member. I have over 30 years of firearm training and experience. I would LOVE to be able to DEFEND my students as well as nurture and teach. #AnArmedSchoolIsASaferSchool#SafeSchools#TxEd@GovAbbott
Wow! They were hiring (from within the district) to replace the retiring Reading specialist and I was the most qualified for the position. I was the only one certified. #TxEd
How funny! My first reading specialist interview was FOUR hours long, I felt so drained yet so confident that they saw me for my talents...I had to teach a lesson, desegregate data, present about balanced literacy, write a professional email and have a 1:3 interview #txed
A3: Authentically who I am as an educator and person - after 20 years and COUNTLESS interviews and roles, I’ve learned I don’t want to be anywhere I am not a fit. #txed
A3: I've learned that communicating your passion is essential. Why I do this everyday and want to keep doing this. And talking about your accomplishments. Might feel like bragging, but it isn't. It's just listing what you have done in your career #TxEd
How funny! My first reading specialist interview was FOUR hours long, I felt so drained yet so confident that they saw me for my talents...I had to teach a lesson, desegregate data, present about balanced literacy, write a professional email and have a 1:3 interview #txed
A3 I want to clearly convey how much I value building meaningful relationships with Ss, as well as Ts, and my focus on student learning/empowerment #TxEd
#txed A3 After 20 years of teaching in 1 school district I had to go out and do interviews again. My priority was that I showed my expertise of the content area and also my passion to help Ss #AlwaysBelieve they can succeed.
A3: When I interview, I want my heart for kids to show through. I want the interviewers to be confident that I will build relationships with staff and students and make decisions based on what’s best for kids. #txed
A3: I want people to see that I love what I do, that I think being a public educator is one of the most important jobs in the whole world, regardless of your title. That I'm here to support students, teachers, and parents no matter what. #txed
A3 I am a servant leader with students’ best interests in mind. I work to be an effective communicator who wants to build relationships with those around me, so we can all work to the benefit of the students! #txed
#txed
A1: As the interviewer I look for a person who is going to build relationships with students, colleagues, and parents. I look for creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and able to communicate to all.
A3-I want them to know why is in my heart. The best advice I could give and what I do is to answer the questions from your heart. In the long run, that is what you would normally do. #TXed
A3: The “3 pillars of patterson”... relationships (with all stakeholders), super high expectations, and rigorous and engaging lessons! #alldaylong#txed
A3: I want the interviewer to know that I am passionate about teaching children and supporting their individual needs. I would also want them to know that I'm a team player and a great collaborator. #txed@lkolb

I think it was really helpful. So many candidates talk about using the data to drive their instruction and small groups. I think it'd be really insightful to give them some sample data and ask them to tell us what they see? #txed
A4 Think through potential questions and the answers I would give. Talk it out with a friend and have them provide feedback from the receiving end. #txed
A4: Make sure you are solid in your beliefs and values - if you know these, you can answer any questions from an authentic place and be true to who you are. #txed
Research is so important! Knowing about the district you are interviewing with is imperative! It helps build that relationship and shows you truly care! #TXed
A4: I do my research on the campus and write out how I think I’m a good fit and what I can bring to the position. If I don’t work those things into my answers, I am sure to add them at the end when asked, “is there anything we didn’t ask that you’d like to tell us?” #txed
A4: I think it's important to do your research on the school and district that you are interviewing for so you are familiar with their community and values. This will allow you to relate to them and express your similar values. @lkolb#txed
#txed A4 PRAY that I end up in the right spot. Boy did that work 5 years ago. An Always Believe In Yourself Scholarship became reality in less than a year after I signed on @GRHSNews This was after not being hired by 8 Katy ISD schools!
True. It’s stressful to not be able to be yourself. One of my sweet students wrote me a card today that said she was able to be herself in my class. #priceless#allthefeels#txed
A4 Be yourself, but stay positive and on topic with regards to the question and your purpose. Do jot down notes to stay on track, but don’t come across as scripted. You know your “why”, now is the time to share it. #TxEd
I hadn't experienced anything like it. It was also just 2 days after I had moved from Austin from my masters graduation lol but luckily was a success and I've been so fortunate for the experience...in my third year as a content specialist now 🤓#txed
A4: #TXed Never Wall into the interview rushed. It sends the wrong message to the applicant. Slow down, breathe, & make the same positive impression that you want to see in the applicant.
A4 - If at all possible, talk to someone in the district and preferably in the building you will work in. That gives you a different perspective. #txed
A4: I have a portfolio. I don't always take it out but I always have examples of some of the major work I've done or programs/structures I've brought to a campus. #txed
A5: Take a deep breath. Be yourself. It’s okay to ask to have the question repeated. There are no “right answers” just share your heart and your beliefs. #txed
Complete an application. We will screen your background and credentials. We’ll call you for an interview. You show you are the right fit. I will present you with a contract. Tomorrow morning. #TxEd
A5: Be confident in yourself! You're not the only one getting interview, you are also interviewing them to see if the school is a good fit for you. #TxEd@lkolb
A4: I go over questions I think I will be asked. I practice, practice, practice. I work on my eye contact prior to the interview and review interview etiquette. #TXed
A5: You're going to end up in front of the kids (teachers, school) who need you most. Be honest and open. Enjoy the experience of talking about your celebrations and growth areas, leading to greater reflection, but know that we all end up right where we're supposed to be 🙂 #txed
What do you do to make the end of school special? Today I gave away all my home printed posters! The kids were SO HAPPY they won! They even wanted me to autograph their prizes. #txed#tlap#kidsdeserveit Link to the album of posters follow https://t.co/mASoGDgMqh
Their drive, their passion, what makes them click. We can teach people how to teach. We can’t teach a passion, desire, and drive to help kids! Hire for attitude, train for success. #txed
A5 Don’t speak negatively about anyone or anywhere. Even if you had challenges from prior experiences, focus on what you learned and how you grew from those obstacles. There is enough negativity everywhere, be the the positive. #TxEd
A5: Relax, you got the interview! Now it’s time to sell yourself. Everyone on the panel or committee wants you to succeed. Always shake hands before and after the interview, believe it or not it will make you relax 😉 #TXed
A5 Don’t speak negatively about anyone or anywhere. Even if you had challenges from prior experiences, focus on what you learned and how you grew from those obstacles. There is enough negativity everywhere, be the the positive. #TxEd
A6: Use the interview as the first opportunity to communicate your vision and values, to set expectations, to gain agreement about the future partnership. #txed
Personally, I had to go through a “lightning round.” Random questions that had nothing to do with the job. I stole the idea because it allows you to get to know applicants on a more human level. Filling a position has to work for the person and the organization. #txed
I’ve got to get better at this, but I have to share specifics. I think globally which makes it difficult to share specifics, but interviewers want that. #txed
A6: Interviews should be 50/50 or maybe 60/40... information should flow between both interviewer and interviewee. Don't just ask questions, give relevant and useful information about realistic hurdles that will need to be addressed. #TxEd
Know what you believe in and hold firm to that. You’ll either be a good fit or not. If you are, then they’ll expect what you told them was important to you. If you are not, you would be miserable if your beliefs don’t align. Be sure to answer the specific question asked. #txed
A6 Make yourself approachable and go out of your way to connect with each person you meet. This is not the time to list of your qualifications and accomplishments; this is your time to find the next amazing educator to add to your team #TxEd
Know something about the school. Demonstrated knowledge specific to the school. Show that you’ve done your homework. And by all means, have questions of your own. #txed
A7 What is your favorite lesson/activity? This question tells you so much about an educator; are they student-centered, creative, open to technology implementation, and the list goes on and on. #TxEd
Be genuine and human. These are people that you will potentially be a team with. Who wants someone who’s a “stiff.” You never know when you’ll be in their shoes. Remember karma. #txed
Q7: I love some of the questions @BethHouf & @burgess_shelley ask in #LeadLAP - “besides district PD, what do you do to grow yourself as an educator” & “Tell me about a lesson you’ve done that you could sell tickets too?” #TXed
I don't want to give away any of @PrinSilliman's secrets but her interview questions are pretty great! I love the mix of them and how we get to see different sides of a candidate. #txed
A6: When I was first trying to get a job, I had a principal tell me that she could not imagine me effectively disciplining. Boy was she wrong! I have led trainings about effective classroom management. My advice is to not put people in a box they don’t belong. #txed
