Welcome back to #bcedchat! Today we will be creating memes to help create a positive classroom culture!
Please introduce yourself and include your subject, grade level and area of interest. #bcedchat.
Hello all! I'm Sarah, I teach grades 3/4 in #SD35. This is my first #bcedchat in 5 years that I'm a (real) traditional classroom teacher! Also the first time in 5 years I haven't worked 2 full time jobs while going to school. This year it's only teaching + #OLTD->MEDL!
Erica. Secondary Math & CS tchr in Burnaby. New role this year is the BC Regional Manager of TEALS (Technology Education And Literacy in Schools), part of Microsoft Philanthropies. #bcedchat
Welcome back for a new year of #bcedchat! Later tonight, we’ll tweet new about a format change to increase the engagement and connections of the #bcedchat community!
A1: Crazy first week, but loved see the students returning and new students arriving. Worst job this past week was working out how to re-organise with one less division due to lower enrollment. #bcedchat
#bcedchat Hi! I’m Morgan and I’m a student at Indiana University. I’m here to learn how to make my future classroom and more fun and inclusive environment!
First week back was awesome...lets see I was licked twice and told I wasn't tall enough to be the teacher. I am in a gr8 school and love my team #bcedchat
A1: Not a a schl but excited about going into others' classrooms to support them! First wk involved looking at how to support teachers in BC to incorporate coding & computational thinking. Exciting, but missing doing fun stuff at school in my class for sure. #bcedchat
A1: My first week in a traditional classroom! This was a big change because usually homeschoolers don't actually get started right away. https://t.co/juWVOJAM8M#bcedchat
We start on the Tuesday after labour day (and go to end of June....) Different jurisdictions do different start and end times. when do you end your year? #bcedchat
A1. A great first week. Teacher Candidate Orientation @UNBC. Taught only one class... believe it or not. A great crew of student teachers coming up from UNBC. Very stoked. #bcedchat
Hello! My name is Molly! I am a student at Indiana University studying Elementary Education. I'm here to learn how to successfully run a fun and productive classroom! #bcedchat
We used to start w a few minimum days but this year it was minimum day on day 1 (Mon) and right into the fire with long days and no holidays. Kids and Ts were excited but pooped! :) #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2: As a student, I had a very relaxed first week. We read the syllabus and got to know the other students a bit. I think college is a lot different than high school when it comes to the first week because in college we really hit the ground running.
Haiii #bcedchat! Victoria here, one of your bcedchat co-mods! I’m a new mama on mat leave (late because of bedtime 😬) but usually a Grade 6 or 6/7 teacher. Welcome all!
A2. Tues was an hour for schedules and photos, Wed - Fri regular classes with a little bit of shuffling schedules and teachers. Tomorrow it gets really real. #bcedchat
The first week of school was an awesome gong show, as only schools can be! I had a wonderful group of 3rds, until the last few minutes of Friday and I got to introduce myself to my new class, and we had our Sorting Ceremony! #Uadilifu#yushu#rohkeus#haporiwhanui#bcedchat
Tried to make it as seamless as possible for my littles...for them it was fun and loud and full of laughs...I have NEVER laughed so hard EVER #bcedchat
Students seem excited and ready to learn. Still chaotic though because some are having their timetables changed. One of my students cried when she was moved out of my class. It broke my heart #bcedchat
I also want to brag about my little dragons because my 3rd graders reached 13 minutes of read to self by Friday! They only got to 18 minutes in all of last year. #bcedchat
I teach in a TK - 8 religious school. We dismiss at noon on day 1. In those 4 busy hours we assemble, are blessed, have extended ms homeroom and run the kids through 2 - 3 shorter classes.
In our 1st math classes, we focus on group work & norms. How about you? #bcedchat
They choose xblock personalized learning project. My group is doing Spanish, robot building, computer programming, sphero war video and the greenhouse #bcedchat
This is definitely something I struggled with! I had so many hugs, and one very sad young man. I assured him he could come play Minecraft with me during lunch when he wants to. #bcedchat
Q3: Let’s make a meme! What expectations (or rules) do you want to establish with students to create a positive learning environment? Create a meme to share with your students! We’ll be sharing our memes throughout the chat! #bcedchat
Oh yes, it’s weird that it’s September and I don’t feel stressed about not being at work. Instead, I feel stressed about when the next nap is supposed to be 😂 #bcedchat
A2:
"When do we go outside?"
"I want to play with the toys."
"When are we going home?"
Some questions from K's during the first week of school (and the second, and the third,...) #bcedchat
@JanetChowMSc A2: my first week was like a series of 100 meter sprints from one professional learning experience to the next but grateful: better busy than bored right?
#bcedchat
Ha! I got called Mom a bunch of times, in a bunch of languages. That was awesome. On Friday afternoon I got called mom, but it was appropriate because my very own daughter is in my grade 4 class :) #bcedchat
Q3: Let’s make a meme! What expectations (or rules) do you want to establish with students to create a positive learning environment? Create a meme to share with your students! We’ll be sharing our memes throughout the chat! #bcedchat
@MsVictoriaOlson Started up in mid-August and now it is the second week of September?! Just last week I referenced "Christmas" in an email being sent to schools. Ha! Time is just flying by! I even "skipped" Wednesday in my head last week. Imagine my disappointment ...#bcedchat
Hi Ziming. Welcome to #bcedchat WE're on Q3 Let’s make a meme! What expectations (or rules) do you want to establish with students to create a positive learning environment? Create a meme to share with your students! We’ll be sharing our memes later during the chat!
Hey #bcedchat - Eli, English 10-12 teacher. A3: I have 1 class rule: Be A Student. We spend some time on the first day talking about what that means, and it’s always a positive chat. https://t.co/hxNW0KezJX
Could go on for hours. Breaks down to a huge shift in teaching from AltEd to MSGr8! Haven’t taught anything lower than 10 in nearly a decade. Did Gr8 in HS; but MS totally different! Very overwhelming. Especially, when you didn’t leave your last job by choice. #bcedchat
Keeping working on your memes, but here is Q4
Q4:Describe the first moments when you met your new class? What steps did you do to make it a positive experience? #bcedchat
Ha! I was fortunate enough to teach her in grade 2 also, she was welcome to call me mom, it was a great experience because of all the empathy it brought to our class. I wasn't just "The Teacher", I was a human too! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A4: When I met the students in my classes, I tried to smile and talk to new people. I get pretty nervous, and the classes here can get pretty big, but I've participated and answered questions when I could to start conversations and get to know my professors.
A4: By the time they walk in, I have the class arranged and seats assigned. From there, I set aside a few minutes for candid chat. How long depends on the group dynamic. Students who know me are already pretty comfortable. Those who don’t are usually a little gunshy. #bcedchat
a4: I sorted my kids. I have 4 houses based on the #SD35 core values. #Uadilifu=integrity (Swahili) #Yushu=excellence (Japanese) #Rohkeus=courage (Finnish) #HaporiWhanui=community (Maori) They will be in house teams all year! We used @plickers for instant sorting! #bcedchat
Oh, I have to send emails home to parents after the dog spends his first day with us...explaining that when your child declares that Mrs. Cramer brings Whiskey to school..it is just our dog..should have called him muffin #bcedchat
A4 We play a lot of cooperative games, ease into the week, spend time going through rules slowly over the week and learn them sometimes experientially lol but with patience #bcedchat
A4. I start with some a positive attitude and lots of smiles. This year I drew 2 stick figures on the board so the students would know which one of us was which. #bcedchat
We also did a lot of social development games. Name games, things about me games, we've started reading my favourite author (#TomieDePaola), and learned to shake hands and maintain eye contact. #bcedchat
A3: I believe asking questions is important because chances are other students in the class may have the same confusions. I believe opening up the classroom and showing the students it's okay to be curious assists in learning. #bcedchat

A4: We talked about #MinoBimaadiziwin the basket of good life, based on work by @MaracleLee introduced to my by John Swift @VIUniversity We talk about the good nugget and how we can all share & create together. This week we will start our #CircleofCourage work. #bcedchat
A4: From a students perspective, when I first met my class I was excited because one of my classes in particular is filled with other students also studying to become educators. #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: I think using a site such as Canvas or Google Classroom where you have a place for announcements that are sent out to the whole class would be a perfect place to put funny/interesting memes and gifs. Students can responds to announcements if it is set that way
A6. It was suggested to me by @LexiIggy to create a Re”meme”bed Wall. I’ll be putting mine together the next two days. Also, gifs when casting and sharing on class site. #bcedchat
A5: You can share them through the remind app and students can text back to reply. A lot of my teachers used this app in high school and its a great way to keep in touch out of the classroom!
#bcedchat
My daughter learned a new meme to help her with converting Wright’s and measures! #bcedchat
“Kings have something something something”. But it helps me “memeber”
#bcedchat A6: I would use Canvas where I could post them as announcements so all the students could see them. Students can slo comment or send me a message.
Awesome first week - lots of welcoming, chatting, creating a warm environment, and hitting hard with high interest topics and texts. #lovemyjob#bcedchat
Q5: When brainstorming new inquiry projects gets messy and you need a little help (Source: u/upp0787 on r/wellthatsucks) #bcedchathttps://t.co/CfhW0NBPAb
Math Practice #3 is "Construct Arguments & Critique The Reasoning of Others." When do you use this skill in life? Silly/Serious answers wanted. Non-math answers encouraged. Respond in Meme or GIF whenever possible. #mtbos#msmathchat#iteachmath#WeAreCUE
I use memes with overdue books to add a fun spin to my incessant reminders to return them. Have been tossing a few ideas around of how to get students to use memes to respond in their careers class this year but nothing solid yet. Would love inspiration. #bcedchat

A4 we welcomed our class with apples and water bottles on their desks. Said hello to each student We then introduced ourselves, played team building games and had lots of laughs! @LeoneM4@nicolerdavey#bcedchat
BREAKING NEWS! This fall we are going to try something new! The September 30, October 28 and November 25 Sunday chats will be continued with a 30 minute chat on the following Thursday. #bcedchat
BREAKING NEWS 2! We are hosting more Guest Moderators this year! We have some returning guests and some new guests! @tweetsomemoore will guest moderate on December 2nd! #bcedchat
#bcedchat A8: this is a question, but what is a good way to let students get to know each other without forcing them to do those cringy ice breakers that they've all done a million times before? I think it's important for there to be a sense of community
