A1: Asia Society tries to serve all cultural communities as best we can!
We're wondering which cultural communities do you serve.
Hi! Fourth grade teacher from MN checking in!
A1: Ss are AA, Christian, urban but serve those who need
Thanks for joining the chat tonight!
Q2: In what ways do students’ cultural backgrounds shape global conversations? How can they enrich all student learning?
Brett from Iowa swing through! 6th G and my fav is the Rugby 7's!
A1: Any that are sent my way? I'm on my 4th school now, so I've served a number of communities.
A1) As instructional designers we seek to serve all cultural communities - working to expand connections in schools.
With their varying perspectives- their voice helps other students to look at it from a different angle.
We document cultural communities all around the world and share them with students of all ages/diversities.
How do you gather information about the cultural groups in your community or how do you support teachers in this work?
Who's in your classroom right now, Cristy?
A2 Shape Ss by connecting. Enriching them to be open and get out of their comfort zone to explore & learn about risk taking
A2: This Q requires more than 140 characters. Ha. Learners can contribute unique perspectives based on life outside of school.
Hi! I’m joining from the Boston area.
-Great Cristy! Important for teachers to be ready for anything walks thru the door. Teachers are great at that!
Nobody. We start Monday, and the scl is new to me. I know there will be a French boy.
You're so right, it's more complex than 140 c's!
Please help help this amazing teacher by retweeting to help her connect https://t.co/ND1G39fZp8
A4: Looking for International connections this year for 1st graders (6-7y/o) from MN! Anyone?
- feel free to answer in segments. We all want to know how you do it!
Hi Liz, just got back from Boston! Love your city!
A2) Engage students in real-world problem-finding and let be the unifier, e.g. "changing perspective"
Through respectful conversation and observation and being willing to take a learner stance.
That should definitely assist the conversation! Personal experience and cultural tips!
A2. Refugees students & their families are a powerful addition to any school. Admins. should be clamoring for them.
A2. Students' cultural backgrounds are a foundation for their values and ways of seeing the world.
A2 This Q reminds me of college. I've met many people from all over the world. I've learned so much from them. Ss need that.
Multiple perspectives give children windows into the workings of cultures and societies.
A2: Have heard that students can be hesitant to share, might be well into the school year before they share their stories.
What I mean by this is how power is exercised in everyday interactions through words and actions.
My former student from Nepal often had that issue
Key thing to build in all classrooms is trust. Always the challenge. Once there, stories come pour out!
Hello! Phil Wagener from Springfield, Illinois. Excited to learn from all of you!
Q3: What are the main challenges of working with students to raise their critical cultural awareness?
Children's literature can play a great part in affirming and expanding children's experiences.
Thanks for the great article share!
Yes! LOVE welcoming learners from all over the world. Several have kept in touch over the years.
A3: One essential early elements is to understand they have a culture (In my late teens before I even comprehended this.)
A3 Overcome a Eurocentric view of the world from most of my S. Getting them to view from outside their exp.
Stopping by to say hi. Joe Rodriguez 5th grade teacher at the Ambassador School of global education in Los Angeles
A3) Lack of doesn't allow you to see outside yourself; doesn't fully form until age 25!
A3 1 Challenge, they might have fear of opening to others. As educators we need to decrease that fear & show a 🌍 of building
Thank you! Love the topic!
It's important for us to reflect on how we define culture because that our definition shapes what we see and don't see.
Encouraging empathy, get sts to realize there are 2+ ways to solve problems. 4+5=9 but so does 8+1 :)
Love this article too, Janice. Have you used any global kids' books along with investigations?
A3 Growing up, I was always shy. I never wanted to open up. Today, I have never been more open.
May not fully dev. but gotta lay groundwork for when dev. capable. https://t.co/HCGBkmNVVB
A3) Lack of doesn't allow you to see outside yourself; doesn't fully form until age 25!
awesome back with kid ambassadors next week.
Yes and Ts can build EF in Ss to advance the development. Critical!
Goes hand-in-hand with understanding that you have a perspective and that other peoples' might be different!
A3 helping students to see other points of view from what may be told to Ss in home environment
I find useful to think of culture as dynamic, complex and diverse. There's a tendency to think of culture is stable and boxed.
I have not but am open to recs! I'm actually not a teacher, but I love gathering resources to support them
A3: dispelling preconceived ideas and biases
A3 I've build trust through relationships and even my failures is what I love sharing. No need to be ashamed of them!
. Yes and Ts can build EF in Ss to advance the development. Critical! https://t.co/9wuIg4U6er

Yes, global learners must be lifelong learners https://t.co/YFnOkX1Iry
I find useful to think of culture as dynamic, complex and diverse. There's a tendency to think of culture is stable and boxed.
A3: It's challenging to dispel the false ideas that learners have been fed regarding the world outside of the United States.
A3 Enough with that "what if" & how about we start with that "let's do". Life's all about exploring!
I agree. Relationships are central to this work. Using child lit helps teachers to get to know students.
- so important to do. Especially aware of this as we watch NBC Olympic coverage in our house.
Q4: Which global, international, or multicultural books have you used consistently and why? How did you locate them?
Think we run into the same problem when looking internally into the US. https://t.co/mVnLf3DV2i
A3: It's challenging to dispel the false ideas that learners have been fed regarding the world outside of the United States.
A truly powerful point ! . https://t.co/x7vEQTote1
I find useful to think of culture as dynamic, complex and diverse. There's a tendency to think of culture is stable and boxed.
A3 Safe environments for both sharing and asking questions - a lot of people don't feel comfortable talking about difference
We find it useful to include US in thinking about the global. Many global cultures reside here. The world lives here.
With relationships, Ss can connect and know other people. Hear other perspectives & learn that the 🌍 is so unique.
Totally agree, Brett - we have lots of notions around class and privilige w/o leaving the U.S.
A4 My district does an amazing job locating books from multiple cultures that connect to our standards. Lots of Ts looking
Important to dispel stereotypes instead of promoting them; authentic with original voices as authors.
About to dive into The Global Educator by !
A4 As a kid, I read "Freedom Writers" & watched the movie. I loved it bc it taught the value of knowing your Ss background
Sorry to miss! Will join next week. Visiting family in Midwest. 🌏
Yes! It's so hard to do! ...& there's the debate about the role of an educator re: hot topic discussions in the USA.
A4 Sometimes a challenge to be well-rounded in a public library - very driven by what local community will pursue
Just saw the iPhone comm. with Dr. Angelou Crazy cool.
A4 For one of my college classes, we had to read "Mexican White Boy" a book that tested cultural values. It was a good one.
We need to proceed with care authenticity. All books are socially made. Invite children to take them apart to rewrite stereo.
A4: We do not use books in the novice language courses, but I try to incorporate poetry/short stories w/social justice themes.
Words and images can be analyzed for worldviews. How do the books position children? communities?
A4 Four Feet Two Sandals.
Hi !!!! So great to see you on
A4 How about Ss making their own book. I think that will be such a powerful & fun thing for them.
Hello!! I was eating a tomato sandwich for dinner when I realized what time it was! LOVE the :) How is Vegas?
Q5: How have you used global books to raise students’ awareness of global cultures & to consider different aspects of culture?
How did you learn about it? what's great about it?
These texts bring readers up close to how individuals and communities organize and mobilize.
A4: In the upper level French courses, we read stories from various Francophone African nations. Always a lesson at the end.
And do they show cultures as stagnant, lump together various tribes and people into a general and indistinct group?
As a future T, I plan of making my Ss write on a journal each day.Let them know that it's their best friend. Writing is a MUST
Notice how twitter pauses when certain athletes are competing?
My son is making his own book in summer camp about his summer adventures - he LOVES the process. https://t.co/SvCqo0PdJt
A4 How about Ss making their own book. I think that will be such a powerful & fun thing for them.
A5 I like to use stories as a hook to get Ss interested. Ss have also used books 4 research. https://t.co/kHYszwCdxk
Q5: How have you used global books to raise students’ awareness of global cultures & to consider different aspects of culture?
You see that's what I'm talking about! It's all about THEM! Ss success is so IMPORTANT. https://t.co/Lq4eGtlV6u
My son is making his own book in summer camp about his summer adventures - he LOVES the process. https://t.co/SvCqo0PdJt
A4 How about Ss making their own book. I think that will be such a powerful & fun thing for them.
Is he also illustrating them?
Bookmaking is one of the most powerful ways for children to understand that many decisions are made.
Making their own books can be so powerful. Also coupled with other stories.
I just asked, the response was, “There may be a FEW pictures” :)
My 1st written book. I had so much fun. I learned the power of reflection through this. Ss need that. https://t.co/WirTzM79Qn
Children learn about the choices that authors and illustrators make in communicating stories & other info.
Confess I was just watching on Bar
A5: We read work from authors from around the Francophone world -- not just France. Study of other cultures is integral.
Guess what?! Pablo is going to visit my school!! :) I am so excited!
A5 We talk a lot about our own experiences and how they may differ from the people sitting next to us and across the world
Reflection is so important! but also the chance to create, revise, and rethink for an audience-all imp. too!
A5. I like to trick my kids into reading global cookbooks so I can then tell travel & food stories.
A5 I think Malala’s book is powerful! My 6th gdrs can’t believe there are places int he world where girls can’t go to school.
what??!!! In person??!! That's amazing!!! Officially jealous!!
Yes! Showing multiple parts of a culture is important as points out https://t.co/ErxCEvWLDF https://t.co/TWuELz4CQU
A5: We read work from authors from around the Francophone world -- not just France. Study of other cultures is integral.
We had a showing of the movie for 5th and 6th graders and I don't think they blinked or breathed the whole movie!
I love having Ss imagine what it would be like to live in someone else’s shoes and then express it thru art!
I would read those & listen to cool, authentic stories with great pleasure! :) https://t.co/IgmVjiaBtl
A5. I like to trick my kids into reading global cookbooks so I can then tell travel & food stories.
Direct author engagement can be so influential, for Ts and Ss. Eric Velasquez visited our inst.
Uh oh! ! Where is ? https://t.co/aDXJkllv9G
A5. I like to trick my kids into reading global cookbooks so I can then tell travel & food stories.
Q6: What challenges have you faced in using global books in your classroom? What strategies have you tried to address them?
Yep! Need to work on a proposal for funding but Pablo is going 2 work w/my kiddos! I can’t wait!
Especially if a tasting was involved! https://t.co/wzhaXKbiQA
I would read those & listen to cool, authentic stories with great pleasure! :) https://t.co/IgmVjiaBtl

The arts offer additional options for children to represent their meaning meaning of texts.
For adults too! Loved our book club on water with - I was thinking of him at Iguazu falls! https://t.co/POSW4HcB4W
Direct author engagement can be so influential, for Ts and Ss. Eric Velasquez visited our inst.
A5: we read to expose Ss to diff cultures & incl video & kwl to discuss, compare/contrast, learn more
Access, alignment, research to find them, how to use them. Lots of issues!
And hopefully make some good meals! Pairing activity with discussion is good on multiple levels:)
Exactly… also the discussions that take place are rich and genuine.
is a powerful movie-how 3 kids in world get to school. so diff than hopping on school bus
The arts create experiences for children to live and question the words and story lines of texts.
- another way for students to reflect, revise and think about presentation to peers - excellent!!
A6: Finding the time to dive into the reading. especially when students want to know more.
Can others share ideas on how to overcome that? how to find time to dive in?
A6 I think is hard for 4th graders to see outside their backyards. How do we help them get a different perspective?
A4: The ugly vegetables, hush, my name is johari, the name jar, chrysanthemum, the empty pot. Read them to my own kids.
A6 Connecting readers back to real-life & reminding them that reading about a place once doesn't mean you know all abt it!
Having books available during reader's workshop or even a book club can be a start
A6 conveying to students what it truly means to live in a world unlike our small town. Try to include bks, pics…
Find it alarming as our world shrinks Soc Stu time is cut/reduced from many Elem and MS sched.
A4 P2: Diverse books were recommended to me, or I read about them in an article or review.
Yes! Children's background knowledge is a resource for new experiences with books. Their disconnections are key too.
I love theatre but haven’t incorporated in2 art lessons. Tableau is common practice in some GT CR
A6: Only challenges we tend to have w/lit in hs French courses are lang related. If ever happens,pre-reading discussion helps.
Woops forget what time it was missed most of Blaming the Olympics
Through reading we all (especially our students) get to travel through time and space. https://t.co/niY04qkjKy
A6 I think is hard for 4th graders to see outside their backyards. How do we help them get a different perspective?
- My kids have had to do tableaus -interesting the thought, planning, & teamwork for the one scene
Personal goal for me this year- more opp 4 Ss 2 share work @ end of lesson- always room 4 improvement https://t.co/5yPLkYNNgH
- another way for students to reflect, revise and think about presentation to peers - excellent!!
is our colleague on the Doors to the World project too. Thanks for joining us, Natalie Sowell!
One book can't do it all Children need to have access to multiple stories about the same place. Multiple complicates.
and soc stu includes so much of what makes us understand others
the Rugby7s seemed to have been pretty good. NBC didn't show it.
Multiple Balances, challenges, enriches AND complicates!
What is Doors to the World project?
A6: Not in school libraries so I had to locate and purchase them myself.
- I know you will get there! You have some lucky students!
I have NBC Sports app on Apple TV, they replay from all the different events. We have been watching a wide variety!
Got to watch on a couple of the other channels as well as live stream. FUN!!
Q7: What online resources have you explored to help build critical global literacies in classrooms?
Drama makes meaning making public. Creates moments for deepening relationships.
Music and videos also helps w/this. It is hard 4 Ss 2 see beyond their small world sometimes
Thanks! I'm loving reading everyone's responses!
Some of my S have never left the county, much less state. If I dont provide window, S wont get it. https://t.co/oBYzvhgdjG
Music and videos also helps w/this. It is hard 4 Ss 2 see beyond their small world sometimes
