Q1. It’s common for kids with #ADHD to have trouble expressing their emotions. What are some strategies to help a child with ADHD who’s struggling with frustration or anger? #ldchat
A1. Have your child take a few deep breaths. Find the cause of anger and frustration. Help your child name their emotions. Acknowledge that feeling anger and frustration is okay, it's what you do with those feelings that counts. #ldchat#ADHD
My older kids with ADHD don't usually have difficulty expressing anger. The challenge is that they are usually feeling something else. Let them run the show. Take on the role of mentor who listens, not gives advice. #LDchat

@dawnmpace Meet with teacher to talk about multimodal teaching, and incorporating your kid's interests into lesson planning. Many teachers I've worked w/ have been happy to do this. #ldchat
A2. @UnderstoodOrg Positive self-esteem helps any kid, but kids with #ADHD hit more "speed bumps" than other kids. Use positive reinforcement - catch your kids being good. Use a reward system. Find activities where your child can excel. #ldchat

A2. Sometimes I give parents a "golf counter" and have them click how many times they are positive w/ their kid during the day. It's a helpful reminder & encourages positive reinforcement. #ldchat
A2. I’ve noticed that kids who have ability to fully follow and develop a passion cope significantly better. Their loves must be nurtured. #ldchat#adhd
A2: Having self-esteem helps an ADHD child regulate their reactions better because they aren't as dependent on others for approval. We can help them gain self-esteem by encouraging them to pursue their strengths and talents. #ldchat
A2. Older kids with ADHD have spent more than a decade as the "other." We build self-esteem by finding something they excel at. Speak out. Brag. But don't forget to help others. Self-esteem is nothing without empathy. #LDchat
#LDChat. I find that helping them realize that no question is stupid helps reduce fear and shame. No one can learn or express themselves well when they feel these feelings.

@RainCityReading Yes, if you tap into what your kid is passionate about, it makes a world of difference. And if your kid has #ADHD, it's perfectly okay if they have many interests at once! #ldchat

A3. Parents role-model advocacy for their kids w/#ADHD. Kids shouldn't be expected to manage their own accommodations. Self-advocacy is a skill that kids w/ ADHD learn over time. Kids w/ ADHD are 1-3 years younger developmentally, & still need parental support in college. #ldchat
YES! Mastery is huge. That’s part of why I like to teach my kids at least a few things none of their peers know about their written language. While working towards mastery of literacy, they have something specific to teach others. #ldchat
A3. Self-advocacy usually kicks for kids w/ #ADHD when they are high school or older, and they still need more parent involvement even in college. #ldchat
A3: Kids with ADHD (especially girls without the H) can fall through the cracks. If they learn to ask for help, their needs may never be seen. #personalexperience#adhdgirlsunite#ldchat
The National Institutes of Mental Health has some good ADHD research. There's a lot of information on the comorbidity of ADHD and mental illness. #LDchat

RT RT drhallowell: A3: Self-advocacy is knowing your limitations & being self-aware to communicate that you may need help. We all need help sometimes! #ldchat via UnderstoodOrg #ld#adhd
A4. Accommodations are key - including: not having recess taken away for ANY reason; all instructions in writing; seating at front of room; reduction in homework; extended time on tests; testing in separate & quiet location; not having handwriting counted as a grade. #ldchat
A4. Recess should NEVER be taken away, whether due to classroom behavior, not completing classwork, or standardized testing. Have it added to 504/IEP plan. #ldchat
A3. Self-advocacy is especially important for teens and young adults with ADHD. Accommodations are unlikely without asking for them. Remind them that they're just looking to level the playing field. The trick is to encourage them to stand out among others. #LDchat
A4: Tons of ideas!
-Sit in the front row
-A place for everything and everything in its place (homework folder, return to school folder, work to be completed folder, etc.
-Checklists!!!
- Break large reading assignments into small 5-10 page chunks
#ldchat
A4. Playground is where we learn our social skills, and kids w/ #ADHD need to have that time to exercise (boost neurotransmitters) & sharpen social skills. #ldchat
