For the next hour my tweets will be dedicated to #iaspachat. Tweets have been scheduled in advance as I am attending the @_IASPA_ HR Essentials workshop.
A1: Chris Wolk, K-4 Principal/HR, Grayslake 46. My grandma's, now mom's, "fruit salad" made with whipping cream, fruits, and topped with maraschino cherries. #iaspachat
Happy Holidays #IASPAchat! Kathleen Kelly Colgan, Executive Director of Human Resources @Morton201 in Cicero. My fave holiday dish is Christmas cookies 🎄🎄
Monica Schroeder, Deputy Supt., scheduled tweets from the Human Capital Summit in FL @_aaspa_ , & my favorite holiday dessert is Cuban pudin diplomático. My aunt makes it and it's amazing! #IASPAchat
Good morning all from Toledo Ohio (Toledo Public Schools). I am Lori Reffert, Sr. Director of Talent Acquisition & Management and my FAV holiday Dish? Hhhhmm ... Buckeyes of course! #IASPAchat
A0: Dale Fisher, Asst. Supt. for HR. I work in Deerfield, IL and my favorite holiday dessert is shortbread cookies. @PaneraBread makes the best shortbread cookie. They should reach out to me if they need an overweight sponsor who is a verified user of the product! #IASPAchat

A1: We don't have as many subs as most traditional schools. Since we're an ESA, we only have subs for our Educational Learning Centers and typically they are retired teachers or relatives. #IASPAchat
Q1 Excited about the plan our district is putting into effect TODAY. New info-graphic to push out EVERYWHERE with a direct interest link to the HR office. We will follow up immediately with a personal call. We also set up a new substitute page on our website.#IASPAchat
A1: Our most successful effort was a recruitment fair on a Saturday that included completing all of the hiring paperwork and short training. #iaspachat
A1: By far the best "strategy" we've found is increasing the wage.
The cost-benefit is WAY in our favor, as it's a small cost to the system overall compared to the disruption of not being able to fill the position.
#IASPAchat
A1. I'm hoping to learn from all of you today! We've had some success from asking our staff and principals to recruit and encourage parents to apply to our guest teacher pool too. #IASPAchat
Q1: Our billboard outside one of our campuses has been extremely effective thus far! Our #ILHRleaders colleagues have been so creative in this arena, and I would love to adapt some of their ideas #IASPAchat
A1: We sent substitute teacher video interview requests to everyone who unsuccessfully applied for a job in our district. We also blasted it out on social media and our district websites. #IASPAchat
A1: We hold at least one job fair late fall for all sub positions and have had a good deal of success and our local media help spread the word. But always looking for ways to improve on recruitment! #IASPAchat
A1: Social media is extremely helpful in getting the word out in my district. I know of other systems that have created magnetic car banners, yard signs, and highway billboards that also work well. #IASPAchat
Monica Schroeder, Deputy Supt., scheduled tweets from the Human Capital Summit in FL @_aaspa_ , & my favorite holiday dessert is Cuban pudin diplomático. My aunt makes it and it's amazing! #IASPAchat
Any effort to make distinct info available to Guest Teachers on the website goes a long way. We did it a few years ago and it is still helpful to us. #IASPAchat

A1 Recruitment: We partnered with our communication department to develop a sub recruiting video. Our communications director was able to get it on the local public channel. Thanks to Cathy Hamilton and Chris Jasculca in D97 for their work ! #iaspachathttps://t.co/HXTQoKgMP4
A1- Our recruitment efforts include social media posts, posting banners on high traffic areas within our boundaries, postings on Jobspot K-12, a blurb in D21community communications #IASPAchat

A2 Training: We require all new guest teachers attend 2 hours of face-to-face training in addition to the compliance modules. We share expectations for treatment of students, provide info about D97, and share strategies for success. #IASPAchat

#IASPAchat A1: We creates a new position titled “flex sub” which allows subs to work flexible work hours, 9-1 or 10-2. We have seen an increase in apps from community colleges and from parents. They can’t start their day at 8:00 so they are able to start later. #canthurttotry
Q2: We have lots of room to grow here - I am new to my district and this is one of the initiatives I will be working on in Spring to prepare for next year. Got lots of great ideas on this at the @_AASPA_ conference! #IASPAchat
A2: Our training is limited. We need to do better in order to help our substitutes be more effective. Would love to have more time and hear other ideas. #iaspachat
A2: Unfortunately, we offer minimal training at this time. We are looking at modules in the Frontline Professional Growth section to have subs complete in the future. #IASPAchat
A2: We hold several "orientations" throughout the year for prospective subs.
We have gotten positive feedback, ...that it helps them to feel like they're not "going in blind."
Cover topics like emergency procedures, lesson plans, attire, confidentiality, etc...
#IASPAchat
A2: We definitely need to expand in this area and have been discussing what PD we can offer. Currently they attend our New Hire Orientation before starting, receive a Handbook with gobs of info and we send them off into the world. #IASPAchat
A2. We have @PattySamuelian train all of our guest teachers in safety procedures, CHAMPS, technological devices that they will use and see in the classroom, and she provides an overview on our new curricular resources. #IASPAchat
A2: We are currently limited but I've always been impressed with Jake Chung's @AHSD25HR work with training Guest Teachers. If I remember correctly, he created a whole professional development series for them. In the near future, I plan to model this approach. #IASPAchat
Welcome @drcarter29. This has potential. Great way to tap into a market for Guest Teachers that need a little bit more flexibility in their day. #IASPAchat

So glad to have @mportwoodpro with us. Maybe starting out with general training sessions thorughout the year is an option. Do you pay them to come in or is it voluntary? #IASPAchat

A3 Every sub should have a "buddy" teacher in the building to welcome them, check on them, and make them feel like they have someone to support them throughout their day. #IASPAchat
A2-Initial training 3 hours: professionalism, confidentiality, expectations for creating a positive learning environment. Principal and nurse discuss safety and health procedures. Voluntary PD including Technology Basics, Math, ESL, Positive Classroom Environment, #IASPAchat
A3: We have 1 secretary assigned at each campus to be the "go-to" person for subbing, and they greet the subs daily at the start and end of each day, and develop relationships with them over time. #IASPAchat
A3: Each building has a building specific welcome packet when a new sub arrives they should receive one. In my building I try and greet each new and try to learn their names in order to keep them coming back. #iaspachat
A3. We took the lead of @DaleFisherEdD and started calling our substitutes by the name of "guest teachers" since the start of the school year. We asked our principals to treat them like our guests & take time to care for them. Checkout some of our examples below. #IASPAchat
A3: There's just no substitute for relationships.
How we treat subs is a great topic for convo with kids, and is emblematic of how deeply SEL initiatives have taken root.
Reflection sheet for teachers in guiding that convo with students...
https://t.co/a4dL40wroF#IASPAchat
A3: First, if you are still using the term substitute, stop immediately. It is not the most inviting phrase. The term guest invokes a certain sense of decorum and respect and was a game changer the moment we made the switch. #IASPAchat
#iasapchat A2: we offer a monthly in person 2 hour sub onboarding orientation. Vision mission values programs and services, disability awareness, review policies/procedures, Q and A and swag bag. NVCI training and follow it up with a hand written note after their first day

We need a @AHSD25HR presentation at the IASPA conference on this. It still sticks with me and I think about your concept. That says everything. #IASPAchat
Yes, we call it our Guest Teacher Academy and it runs throughout the year. Math, Literacy, Enrichment, and even resume building/interview skills are covered.
#iaspachat A3: Our subs feel very connected to the specific schools they sub in most and I have to thank the incredible building leaders for making them feel so connected and valued @NSSEO_org#makingmoments

A4 I have a few ideas on incentives.. such as earning a bonus $$ if you work so many days w/o cancelling each month, but haven't put anything in place. #IASPAchat
A4: We review our substitute rate of pay in comparison with area districts annually and adjust accordingly. On-call sub rates are approved by the board each summer. Long-term subs are placed on the certified schedule. #IASPAchat
A4. Following the lead of others, we put in place this yr a higher daily rate once a guest teacher completes 20 full-time days of substituting in @nssd112 during the current school yr. This is something that we hadn't done outside of long term assignments. #IASPAchat
A4: We recently increased our daily sub rate but I would love to implement what a neighboring dist did and create a progressive pay based on number of days worked per year. #iaspachat
A4: We have variable rates of pay based on longevity in the role. Loyalty rates for those committed to the district. Incentive pay for those days for when we know a shortage is likely. And are considering referral bonuses. #IASPAchat
A4- We increase daily rate after 59 days. There is a "loyalty rate" for people who have taught 90 days each year during the past 5 years (this is great for our retirees). We provide voluntary PD on topics for which they have asked for training. #IASPAchat
Q5: So much of this is done at the building level in our district - interested to see what others are doing with district communication to guest teachers #IASPAchat
A4: We award subs a referral bonus and have found nice success in that. I stole an idea from @LcglickmanLynn and give a pay increase once they sub with us for 30 days #iaspachat
A5: One Google add-on that we use with Substitutes is called "Just Another Mail Merge."
It creates a email merge from a gsheet and pairs perfectly with your gmail account. Makes sending customizable mass emails to groups a breeze. Highly recommend.
#IASPAchat
A5: Recently attended a @FrontlineEdu training, along with @teresareiche, on Absence Management and looking forward to using the system to communicate with subs on important information #TheMoreYouKnow#iaspachat
A5. @PattySamuelian sends out monthly newsletters to our guest teachers w/timely information about what's new in the district. She also is the person dedicated to 2-way communication w/them. It's nice to have 1 contact person so they know who to "go-to" for information.#IASPAchat
A5: Started using @SmorePages to send out quarterly news updates to our Guest Teacher group. We seek out info from staff and admin in the district that we think is helpful information to share. Can link websites and training videos to content. https://t.co/R9bCY1Em5C#IASPAchat
A5: We communicate through blast emails any messages that need to be shared. These are school closings and any blasts sent to our students, staff, and community regarding incidents or events. #IASPAchat
I just sent out my latest Guest Teacher News blast this morning. Feel free to review content. Already have 93 confirmed site hits on the newsletter. https://t.co/FocFiNMqvJ#IASPAchat

A6 Recognize excellent subs! Consider naming your shining stars “Substitute Teachers of the Month!" Feature the in Newsletters, Local Newspapers or Bulletins #IASPAchat

A6. We have a yearly coffee & the start of the school yr to welcome them back. We've also encouraged our principals to try to include as part of the staff as much as possible. Below is an example of how @MrRodrigo5 recognized one of our guest teachers. #IASPAchat
A6: Recognition should be natural. I make a point to find a minimum of one opportunity a day to recognize those who go above and beyond. It's become somewhat of a standard practice for many admin in my district. Guest T's receive these as well. #IASPAchat
Aw...my friends at Smore are following along with me. Thanks! I love the product and value how easy it has been for us to communicate quality messages to our Guest Teachers. #IASPAchat.
A6- Our "Substitute Staff Tea" in June is a light lunch, time for socializing and for thanking them. We also gather feedback on what is working well and what we can do to improve their experience. As a result, we have made changes in procedures and identified PD needs. #IASPAchat
I have "Recognize Someone" on my to-do-list every day. A handwritten card goes a long way and if you can't find someone to recognize, then you're doing it wrong!
Stole this idea from @Jeff_Zoul years ago. Taught me value for the efforts of all. #IASPAchat.
A7: It is critical that staff leave quality lesson plans or use Google Classroom in a way that student learning will still take place. Can't be glorified Study Hall. #IASPAchat
A7: This requires the right training to make sure Guest T's are comfortable and proficient with both the curriculum and instructional materials in the district. You can't expect them to be high performers if you don't train them to be high performers. #IASPAchat
I do think that Google Classroom and other tech tools has made this far easier for Guest Teachers. The days of the written lesson plan are waning. #IASPAchat
A7: It is critical that staff leave quality lesson plans or use Google Classroom in a way that student learning will still take place. Can't be glorified Study Hall. #IASPAchat
A8: The teacher completes an evaluation form based on what was accomplished in their absence, and any information provided by DC and students, and this is sent to AP overseeing subs. #IASPAchat
A9. We gather feedback from staff via AESOP. We review ratings of less than 3 stars paired w/detailed feedback. We bring in a guest teacher & speak w/them if we hear anything concerning or they've received less than 3 stars throughout the yr. #IASPAchat
A8: Very weak in this area. Currently using a subjective word of mouth method and feedback form from teachers. I recognize we need to invest in creating an actual eval document that provides realistic feedback for growth. #IASPAchat
I'm taking an opportunity to publicly thank @Mschroeder6 for all of her efforts to get #IASPAchat up and running this year. She is one of my go-to-people in the HR field and strongly believe she is an asset to anyone who interacts with her. She is amazing! A model for all.
A8 Interested in ideas from others on this one. No formal process for evaluating. We do have a process in place when a concern is raised by students, teachers, parents, or administrators. #IASPAchat
I've spent a lot of time wondering if this is an opportunity to provide instructional feedback for Guest Teachers. If it's a growth mindset we trying for, can[;t we figure out how to effectively help Guest Teachers grow? #IASPAchat
A6: I too need to work on this. Agreed @DaleFisherEdD with those hand written letters. Send one out after the sub’s first day but need to do more #IASPAchat#recognitionmatters
I wonder if we shouldn't create a formal evaluating process. Maybe a five minute walk-through. Our focus has been negative feedback reported but want to switch to a growth mindset. No answers yet but willing to explore. #IASPAchat
A8 Interested in ideas from others on this one. No formal process for evaluating. We do have a process in place when a concern is raised by students, teachers, parents, or administrators. #IASPAchat
A7: we have sub binders in each classroom that contain master schedule, IEPs at a glance, behavior plans, lesson plans. Hard to dedicate time for the subs to review prior to students arriving... work in progress #Iaspachat
A8: @NSSEO_org has a mid year and EOY eval buildinf APs complete on subs but often focused on the areas of growth. Need to follow up with strong PD aligned to identified needs. #IASPAchat

I guess that's a wrap on another #IASPAchat. If anyone wants to further bounce ideas with me, I'm always here for you. E-mail me at dfisher@dps109.org or DM me.
Q2 I think what @petetheisD99HR is saying is they don’t have training that would have helped prevent former sub Eric Damitz sexually abusing a @Dist_99 student in 2015. #IASPAchat@ThePESMO
