A1 I had the students bring in a small bag with a few of their favorite things, so we could get to know each other better. After sharing the student called on classmates for comments or questions. It let them see common interests.

A2 - I would tell a new teacher to not be afraid to reach out for help. For the most part, we love to help one another. I'd also tell them not to be afraid to leave something "undone." You will feel pulled in many directions and that's okay! #rcstechchat

Thanks, @Tibbstechcoach! A1-Creating positive relationships in Kindergarten is important because for some this is their first school experience. I do an "All About Me" bag so they can get to know who I am and then that opens them up to talking about themselves.

A3- When I was in the classroom I had parents do a little "parent homework" assignment. This helped me to get to know them better. I am also going to be honest and say I may have done a little FB peeping from time to time ;-) #Rcstechchat

A3 this can be sometimes hard to do especiallyat the high school level but communication is key— having a website, remind, Twitter and email and phone calls all help! Also kind of do a little get to know the student assignment #rcstechchat

A3 We had a Kindergarten orientation before the students arrived. All my parents were there and most of them stuck around to tell me more about their child's story. It helps if you know more pieces to the puzzle.
A3: It is challenging in High School (I have 140 students), but I typically try to contact 1-2 parents to let them know of something great that their child has done. This way communication isn't only negative. #rcstechchat

A3 Being in middle school, most of our parents aren't at school regularly Much of our interaction is from school events, phone or email. The best way to get to know a child's family is to ask. If a child trusts you, they will tell you just about anything about their life.
In middle school, parents are so shocked if you contact them with a welcome call at the beginning of the year. It is a great way to start the school off right!

A3-It is pretty easy to get to know K parents. From Kindergarten parent night to open house they are willing to talk all about their little ones and their home life. It is fun to connect the parents to the students in your class. #rcstechchat

A4 #rcstechchat I have "data talks" with my kids & use that time to encourage my students & get to know them a little. I try to learn about their interests, activities, etc. as we have these conversations. It takes little time away from instruction & can often be related to it.
A4 Some days its hard to balance both, but I try to make sure that I slow down the "teaching" to meet the child where he/she is in life. However, because test scores are so very important, some days I have to move quickly to stay on pace with the curriculum.

I try to explain the data as progress/growth rather that just number as a way of encouraging them. If it's not a number "grade" many kids don't get it.

This is my first year in the coach role, so I hope to continue to build relationships with students, even though I will not be in the classroom with them as much directly. I plan to achieve this by being visible in the hallways and classrooms. #rcstechchat
