CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good Morning #catholicedchat I will be driving to CYO basketball in a few...just throwing out a question to get started. How can the story of the Holy Family and the birth of Jesus provide opportunities to discuss current events and social justice in your classroom this year?
Good morning, #CatholicEdChat friends! I’m Denise, MS Math/Science T in St. Louis. Getting ready for class st @SLU_SOE today! Great to see everyone here!
Good morning and happy almost Advent! I am a preservice teacher form Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. Happy to be here this morning. #CatholicEdChat
what i love about @adkopp76 is that she knows how to keep the chat light and airy at the beginning. We talk about the contextual response of a lot of issues: what is the humanitarian response? the Cath.Soc.Teaching response? progressive? conservative? WWJD? #catholicedchat
We were told the #Beprepared as well. It’s a bit ominous when the weather man is telling you to prep for something 24 hours later and he’s not talking snow. 😳 #CatholicEdChat. I’ll be at the @archstl Basilica for our daughter’s Christmas Concert. Hmmmm it might be interesting.

Immigration for sure, as well as the basic notion of recognizing the humanity in ALL those we encounter, not just the ones who live in the "right" zip code. Hospitality, housing, basic needs for all are just a few of the "big" topics I can think of that connect. #catholicedchat
We are SO CLOSE to Washington DC ... we strive for zero politics in the classroom bc people get really upset (& yes it can get tricky) it’s our proximity to DC 😀#catholicedchat
politics in the classroom is always dicey, but that is where we are so lucky being in catholic schools! We have the opportunity to frame everything through the lens of Catholic Social Teachings and leave politics out of it. #catholicedchat
You know my former AP said “stick to the CCC and I will always have your back” and I keep a copy on my bookshelf. And we discuss Catholic social teaching, Dorothy Day, Peter Maurin. #catholicedchat
Will be going into school tomorrow to decorate for Advent and try to find 15 unique and challenging places to hid the Wandering Wisemen for the next 3 weeks. #CatholicEdChat
I know it was a bit odd. We were finishing up our “attitude of gratitude” work this week, but talking a little about preparing to “wait patiently”. #catholicedchat
Welcome! I’m loving all of these #Xavier Ss joining us! A preservice teacher already knowing/understanding the power of Twitter to help them be their best is amazing!! #catholicedchat

i'm not sure how we could frame a modern discussion of events and catholic social teaching without politics. I like using it as one of the sources of discussion. encourage students to discuss issues with parents as well :) #catholicedchat

That's too bad. Perhaps @BarbInNebraska could create an @instagram story for their wandering Wisemen. Then you could share that with your administration to shift the tide for next year? #catholicedchat

Who is participating in #HourOfCode next week? @codeorg I have my Ss doing an entire unit on coding for the next few weeks. Testing out a few coding options. #catholicedchat
Well, you can't, but if the adults start with CST and the students are the ones to bring in the political aspects, that is much safer in a classroom than the adult stating form the political POV. #catholicedchat

It's tough in High school with finals around the corner. teachers have no space to let go of their curriculum. Our EdTech Coach and I have tried to brainstorm around this for a few years with no luck. #catholicedchat
I celebrated St. Nicholas' Day in grade school in high school, but we always found out "surprise" on our desk when we walked into our classroom. #CatholicEdChat

Growing up in a Catholic school I always did that and absolutely loved it! If I get a job at a Catholic school after college I will definitely celebrate St. Nick day! My grade school was St. Nicholas so that’s probably a another reason I loved that! #CatholicEdChat

Not yet--we are hoping there will be enough interest to run it next year (you would think in Silicon Valley it would be a no brainer!) . We do have an Intro to Coding class but only 3-4 Ss ever take it. *sigh . #catholicedchat
How do you do this? This sounds interesting!! Are all three wisemen hidden together? Do the students know about the wisemen which makes it fun for them to search? Do you relate their searching for the wisemen to the wisemen's search for Jesus? #CatholicEdChat

No one asks us to but we have this cool tradition that we decorate our classroom doors for Advent. Doors have started to go up, it’s so festive & fun. I will Tweet some pics soon #catholicedchat
We used to have homeroom competitions for door decorating. Then we found out it was against fire code. So now they decorate door wreaths . Some of them get really elaborate. #catholicedchat
That's unfortunate, because I feel like the students would really benefit from getting experience coding. I feel like when I was in high school (because we too had exams right before Christmas), many teachers had things planned to do, but there wasn't time #CatholicEdChat
It’s a hard sell. I introduced SS to some of the types of CS jobs and they enjoyed the fancy ones, but to be it’s hard to sell “debugging” as a job. #CatholicEdChat
Totally agree! Our Stats teacher does a great job incorporating coding into the class but most teachers feel it's an "add on" instead of an enhancement. I wish I knew more about coding to help support integration. #catholicedchat

hi everyone! cari from St. Edward High School in Cleveland, (it was a big game and late night last night! so I'm walking up now and have to run shortly), but I'm wondering, if you had up to 3k to put a faith and innovation project together, what would you do? #CatholicEdChat
My daughter said there are wandering wisemen at her university and it’s fun to watch them move daily along the campus green @SJUArtsSciences#catholicedchat
Yes! We always heard the story of Saint Nicholas’s life it was one of my favorite days of the year! Some one would dress up as Saint Nicholas and act out his life story! #CatholicEdChat

One of our biggest hurdles is that everything rests on the UC system and they currently do not recognize coding anything other than an elective. Families want it to have more "meat" as they think of art as an elective. #catholicedchat

#CatholicEdChat I have been talking to my friends and have decided to share my photography with Scripture passages posts each day of Advent. So tomorrow will be the start. Prayers people!
There are lots of options for art and math integration and #tynker has an entire library of integrated lessons for the elementary level at the subscription level. #CatholicEdchat
Oh, I would love nothing more than to have some 3D printers for the teachers to use, especially for art and geometry and bio, but without the interests, we can't even justify one. :-( . #catholicedchat

I’m excited to use the 3D printer for the first time this week as well! It will definitely be an experience! I’m not sure what kind of software is in our makers space. #CatholicEdChat

In getting it all done: teaching new content in grades 7/8, meeting my goals, getting items into SeeSaw by the deadline, writing HS recommendations, Student Council. Thnx for asking, that is so appreciated! #catholicedchat
Thank you! I have to head out for a City/County volleyball game with our 8th grader. An exciting day today! #CatholicEdChat is always a great conversation!
