All right, here goes - for elementary students: what effect does math fluency have on the math process
-
A1: I definitely think fluency is important... but not necessarily the "race" we often see. Some students require scaffolds.
-
A2: That said.. The earliest we can catch students who lack automaticity the better. Provide support and strategies.
-
A1. We have to be careful that we aren't just memorizing actually understanding
-
-
Q2. What interventions are schools using for K-2 math and 3-6?
-
a1. structuring numbers is a definite building block of success for elem students in math
-
Our biggest intervention is time. We have extra time scheduled in the afternoon for intervention and enrichment to differentiate
-
Would like to take a look at your schedule.

Switching gears, why is the value of reading and writing seen solely as the English Department's role?
-
Hi Sorry I am late for the this evening. Great topic!
-
Needs to be system wide. Reading and writing, every class, every day!
-
A3: I believe other curricular areas are starting to understand the need for reading and writing instruction.
-
Q4. What discussions are you having to decrease the angst of writing in other departments?
-
Thanks for hosting this evening. It is a busy time for all of us, but great to see leaders connecting.
-
A4: I think any T can help teach effective writing skills. Content specialists understand best how to write in their content.
-
My peers are awesome at having the Ss reading and writing
-
A4 We all have to encourage, develop, and realize that every educator is responsiblefor helping Ss develop writing skills
-
You do you have to be creative… I absolutely think you can get it all in. It's about priorities.
-
A4. Breaking down walls and providing opportunities to collaborate - need to make the time available
-
Q5. Final question coming down the pike!
-
Q5. What is being used in creating accountability in writing across the departments?
-
A5: Accountability can come from PLC discussions within content areas. Sharing of ideas and lesson plans.
-
A5: Writing assessments, like the ACT can help demonstrate that improving writing skills is everyone's job.
-
A5:I enjoy collaborating with other departments like History and Art.
-
A5: Also, Common Core Standards for Science, Social Studies and Technology need to be implemented consistently. Great resource.
-
Thank you all! We have some ideas to discuss now! Have a great evening!

A4 Our District staff reviewed writing and made commitment to improve writing this year. Help each other-hold accountable.
