Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
Good morning, #LeadLAP crew! Time for welcome and intros! Tell us who you are, what you do and where you do it! Grateful to have @mccoyderek leading the ship today!

Learner centered leadership is about service and commit to learner needs. What we do and the decisions we make that put learning and demonstrating learning first and foremost. Let’s jump in!

A1: I'd love to see more students empowered to lead and share. I'd like for staff to push students to create ideas that will change the world or at least the community that we live in. I'd love to see kids making the difference #tlap#LeadLAP

A1 We have a great Student Senate (anyone can join- No voting and no officers) that do great things for our school. I'd love for them to continue to push the envelope of including all kids. #leadLAP

For a quick warm-up, let’s share our thoughts on what learner-centered leadership is or looks likes. What would you like to see more of in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A1: if like to see more projects where kids are posted a question and they have to research it, come up with solutions, and try them! Especially if it gets then out in our community! #LeadLAP
A1 having students best interest at the center of every decision. The key is we need their input, not just what “we” think is best for them. #letthemspeak#Leadlap
A1 Active, talking, sharing answering and asking questions. More prompts than answers. Knowing that people want a leader who believes in them and their talents. #LeadLAP
A1:
Student-Centered Classroom:
Co-creating with Ts and Ss
Ss doing majority of the learning, Ts guide and learn WITH the Ss
Flexibility
Refinement Process- not a one and one project
#LeadLAP
A1 I would love to see students have more choice in pursuing there interests in learning and have the opportunity to share their learning through collaboration and demonstration. #leadlap
A1: One of our school goals for this year focuses on student engagement. We know our teachers work hard. We want our students to assume more responsibility for their own learning. It’s a work in progress. #LeadLAP
26 minutes til #Leadlap talk on learner centered leadership!
I'm going old school today, Tweetdeck unavailable but I'm up for the challenge!
Who's joining, what device r u using? @dellwein@burgess_shelley@BethHouf
A1 i would like to see the learner at the center of our decisions. In policy meetings - ensuring we consider student impact. In classes - increasing student choice and voice. #LeadLAP
A1 Our Ts are moving to having Ss choose how they will show learning & self-assessing. When Ss take charge of their learning, everything changes - engagement goes up, procrastanation goes down. #LeadLap
A1: Jumping over from #LeadUpChat to #LeadLAP. Your pic for this Q & my role as tech coach reminds me that learning centered leadership- I don't touch learners tech, I am a "Guide on the Side." #LeadLAP
A1: The Ss are in control. They are doing the talking. T is sitting beside Ss encouraging questions, and allowing Ss to find the answers themselves. It's organized chaos a lot of times and I love it. #LeadLAP
I love this! And I also love when the kids then can lead where the next lesson goes. If the Ts can truly give the Ss some voice and not follow a strict plan of what's next! #lesslessonplanning#LeadLAP
A1) In the classroom, Ss lead small group stations, become gurus on topics, develop a class mission statement, and the T steps aside so Ss can shine. On campus, Ss organize and lead events and assemblies. #LeadLap

A1: As Instructional Coach I would love to see more learning centered leadership in the after school learning labs we have for teachets! Love to see teachers leading the learning!#LeadLAP
A1: More student-led, less-teacher led. More choice in personalization in learning and showing your learning. Great post from @GustafsonBrad I saw this morning. https://t.co/GMOENlzNLf#LeadLAP
a1 HS math teachers often feel math is the exception for the need of student-centered pedagogy. It used to be math & sci, but NGSS has moved sci. #LeadLAP
A1: Learner-centered leadership looks like Ss leading the ship! Inviting S voice to board meetings, facilitating genius hour, promoting PBL and moving away from yucky worksheets #LeadLAP
Hi #Leadlap PLFamily!
Tara here joining in from Kansas!
Excited to learn from @mccoyderek ! (I have a selfie with him but can't for the life of me find it. Met ya a couple of years ago.)
Let's flex our #leadlap muscles, pals!
A1 Would love to see our curriculum build in great ideas on “learner-centered” leadership, perhaps a bank of ideas we can choose from. Many Ts don’t know where to begin. #LeadLAP
A1: Learner-centered leadership is about empowering students to make their schools and communities better. To do that, I want to hear more student voices. I want to know their ideas. I want them to feel that they can make a difference. #LeadLAP
You got it, Pal! Saving you a seat and a cup of coffee! We are pumped and I psyched to achieve the dream of organizing an #EdCamp. You and Derek were at my first #EdCamp all those years ago! #LeadLAP#GratefulForYou

A1: I would love if Ss were given more choice in learning and voice to share their thoughts and perspective on education with educators so we can see things from their point of view and better meet their needs. #leadlap#MLmagical
A1: More student, less adult. Our tech interns are already beginning to take over the world! They completely run our daily announcements after only three days! #LeadLAP
We are about to start #dear into our #advisory program. Big question for our teachers was - what can the kids read? We said whatever they choose. Looking forward to seeing the impact #LeadLAP

What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2 Design thinking/learning, (Digital&Analog) Choice Activities and Centers, Classroom Design and flow, SEL/TraumaInformed Classrooms. The vast majority of Teachers KNOW the content. Delivery and Kindness make it stick. #LeadLAP
A2: Our campus book study over the summer was #KidsDeserveIt
Student goal setting is also in the forefront of our ship this year. Some things Ts are using are interactive word walls which allow Ss to create the word walls across content areas to support their growth! #LeadLAP
Some of the best PD comes from reading a book together and the formal and informal discussions that follow about shifting to a more learner-centered atmosphere. It's about the questions we ask and embedded learning. #LeadLAP@dbc_inc books are the best!

A2: I am a PLC Coach in my district and the PD events where I have been able to engage in discussion with other coaches about empowering learners through the learning cycle have been powerful. #LeadLAP
A2: it starts with the setup of the room—we have to have spaces that promote collaboration. Next, w shave to provide PD that promotes teachers letting go of the control of being the leader in the room #leadlap
We recently did a whole brain PD where we learned the importance of engaging multiple parts of the brain while learning is occurring to help solidify knowledge, hold S interest and attention as well as allow Ss to take on the role of T. It was really eye opening!
#LeadLAP
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2: We kicked off our year by watching the famous Rita Pierson TED Talk on: Every Kid Needs A Champion. Revisiting this frequently re-establishes our WHY. #LeadLAP
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2 over the last three years we have focused on student engagement, introduced PBLs, gamification, more personalization in our PBL. This has been reinforced by doing more Edcamp style PD on the building and district levels #leadlap
A2: We hosted a two-day PLC Institute at @LL_Schools. @MariaNielsenPLC led an activity that helped Ts think about all of the engagement strategies they already know. Now, we’re sharing and discussing it, and watching Ts run with it. #LeadLAP
A2: The Tech Support Ss lead sessions in New Teacher PD. It is a positive experience for the Ss as they assist teachers get setup answer questions and learn the school landscape. #LeadLAP
A1: Seating arrangement (Kagan Structure) to optimize learning-centered leadership:
Students ask shoulder partner, then ask face partner. If no one knows, then ask the teacher. #LeadLAP
High, High/Med, Low/Med, Low
A2 book studies, that focus on students. How build positive relationships. I also want to incorporate gamification. Just a few but I want hear some pirate inspired ideas. #Leadlap
That is awesome! Good for you! I hope you have lots of support! Your students will benefit for sure! Reach out if you need anything! Always happy to help! #LeadLAP
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2: We've had some edcamp-style PD where educators learned new things so that they can better differentiate for learning needs, preferences, and experiences. #LeadLAP
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2 i have found #plc book clubs facilitated by teachers for teachers very helpful. We recently had the @TheCGCProject team out and I found the #inquiry sessions very helpful. #LeadLAP
A2 My fave PD Topics to promote learner-centered leadership:
#BookSnaps
Peeking Into the Minds of Students (using activities & apps to see Ss authentic thinking)
Non-Googleable Questioning
#leadlap
A2: Last year our school focused on students as designers and builders..from music composition to the school wide board game building challenge. Students were leading the way #LeadLAP
Monday couldn’t come soon enough! I’m so excited to meet the rest of my staff and thrilled to have the opportunity to learn and grow with them before our kiddos come back! It’s going to be an amazing year! #rampride#rhs#leadlap#KidsDeserveIt#collaboration#growthmindset
A2 #EdCamps and #CoffeeEDU have been instrumental for me. We had our first #CoffeeEDU in our Schoolhouse a couple of weeks ago and focused on inspiring more student engagement. #LeadLAP
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
This sounds AMAZING!! I'd like to hear more about it! How was it set up? We do school wide maker challenges too! I could share some with you too! #LeadLAP
Caveat here: Teachers must be open and willing to grow or they will likely sabotage any inquiry-based learning resource. It's not the way we were taught. #leadlap
Love this - we’re doing the same thing, looking at Hattie’s Visible Learning and having Ts pick personal growth groups based upon his high yield strategies. #LeadLAP
Q2: Learning about brain research changed my practice many years ago as did extensive PD on formative assessments. I appreciated mini-lessons paired with collaboration/processing time to allow for exploration of topics with peers. I try to provide the same as a leader. #leadlap
A2-Personal PD w/Ts written books, Ts Podcasts, and Ts sharing practices via Twitter and blogging has enable me to impact student choice and now I'm trying to find ways to incorporate that into my small PD group-#leadlap
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2: At PLCs we talk about "What is best for kids."
Thinking we do need more learner-centered leadership to run our green team programs: recycling, gardening, composting, etc. #LeadLAP
A2 By individualizing our weekly PD, allowing Ts to choose goals & decide how they will reach them, we modeled what we'd like to see in their classrooms... and we're seeing positive results #leadlap
A2b another think I have encouraged with our staff is to take risks and start now! We can fine tune and make adjustments along the way. If things don’t work out that’s ok. #leadlap
Jori from Northern CA jumping in late to #leadLAP - I've found the best PD always centers around teacher collaboration. My Twitter tribe of teachers have taught me SO much #aplitchat#aplangchat
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A2: We’re still working toward this! Our admin are very supportive of new learning and students taking responsibility for their learning! Having Ss track their growth and make decisions about their path for graduation is vital to us @TigerTownCHS ! #LeadLAP
Ultimately I do believe CTE is the way to go. It's such a huge leap for HS math. Ts are so overwhelmed that we can only take little tiny steps in that direction. #LeadLAP
We must become much more aware of shifts that occurring in the world around us…
Embracing AND allows us to see the importance of not only knowledge, but skills and importance of creative, innovative thinking, social and emotional skills, inquiry, problems solving skills #leadlap
A2: We’ve spent time as a staff thinking and learning about how we empower the social thinking of students so they are aware of how they are feeling and how to respond to situations. #LeadLAP
Q2: Learning about brain research changed my practice many years ago as did extensive PD on formative assessments. I appreciated mini-lessons paired with collaboration/processing time to allow for exploration of topics with peers. I try to provide the same as a leader. #leadlap
A3: Physical environment changes when it becomes flexible and less assembly line like. It should be able to change on a dime with little to know lost learning time for the transition. #LeadLAP
A3: This is a game changer. Ss need to be a part of how we set things up. Not one classroom in our school has desks in rows. Not one class only has desks. Flexible seating and options in ALL spaces! #LeadLAP
YES!!! Love #BookSnaps and @TaraMartinEDU. A great opportunity for Ss to create and reflect on their reading in an authentic, personal, relevant way. Students love them!!! #LeadLap
A2 My fave PD Topics to promote learner-centered leadership:

Good morning #LEADLAP! Nili Bartley from MA thrilled to be able to jump in-A2 Launching edcamp style PD's last yr gave Ts a chance to become empowered w/their own learning-as a result they were inspired to bring more S centered learning to their classrooms AND they had fun!
a3 Joy, buy-in, engagement, effort. To see HS math students singing and dancing as they bop into my room (7:20 a.m., no less) is night-and-day different. #leadlap
A2: Yes. Yes. Yes. Thanks for sharing, @inpursuitofed. I learn best by doing, applying, and reflecting on my new learning right there on the spot. Otherwise, I usually forget things over time if I don't have a meaningful memory attached to it. #LeadLAP
Q2: Learning about brain research changed my practice many years ago as did extensive PD on formative assessments. I appreciated mini-lessons paired with collaboration/processing time to allow for exploration of topics with peers. I try to provide the same as a leader. #leadlap
A2- I often find when people have a common vision and the time and resources to solve authentic and meaningful problems in their context, they are more invested and shifts mentality from compliance to agency. #Leadlap
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A3 We have to remove barriers so teachers/kids can “make the learning magic happen” - we have removed walls (bigger space to collaborate), no more bells (learning has no time limit) and improved WiFi (learning happens anywhere ) #LeadLAP
A3 Spaces become less rigid. Our Ts have been revamping their spaces, so I changed my office as well to reflect our philosophy and make it more cozy & inviting. #LeadLap
Leadership style have to change to keep up with changes in teaching style. The old discipline and classroom management methods are now obsolete. #LeadLAP
A3: The teachers I have who get this have incredibly flexible environments that change multiple times weekly/during class depending on the activity. I have to admit - I get a little twitchy when I see rows. #LeadLAP
A3: Getting rid of physical barriers (My teacher desk) between the Ss and me was a game changer. I communicated to me and the kids that we were a community of learners. We were in it together. #leadlap
A2: Had a MAGICAL day of learning at the SOPTV Teacher Summit this past week!✨💫
The energy and enthusiasm in the room was electric! Can’t wait to see what magic is created in @MSD549C classrooms this year! #LEADlap#MLmagical
A3: The physical environment changes, by changing all the time. The physical environment must be able to conform to student learning needs and student learning must be visible in that THEIR products are so profound they change the landscape of our schools. #LeadLAP
A3: Moving from decks and rows in classrooms to the idea that learning can happen anywhere. Group desks, go outside, using the whole campus and digital world. #LeadLAP
A3 Anywhere can be a learning space in the room, depending on what Ss choose, their comfort, we just need to be prepared to sit on the floor :) I do not like rows anymore #leadlap
In reply to
@mccoyderek, @BethHouf, @burgess_shelley, @dellwein
Leadership style has to change to keep up with changes in teaching style. The old discipline and classroom management methods are now obsolete. #LeadLAP
Would love to share...Ss wanted more to do on inside days so we challenged them to work in groups to design and build a table top board game for 3 or more people using recycled materials. (From K-grade 7). Amazing results #LeadLAP
A3 I think learning can take place in different locations and formats. Allow kids to work together or sit on the floor. Use alternative seating. Give students the opportunity to be comfortable and have choices. Create different environments for them to work in #leadlap
A3 We have to remove barriers so teachers/kids can “make the learning magic happen” - we have removed walls (bigger space to collaborate), no more bells (learning has no time limit) and improved WiFi (learning happens anywhere ) #LeadLAP
A3 Flexible options that allow learners to work the way that’s ideal for them. We step back and empower learners to design their space rather than directing how it needs to be. #leadlap
After 1 talk about the physical environment - I think we had 8 Ts get rid of their teacher desk! Very interesting!! I bet your kids loved the community feel! #LeadLAP
A3 The physical environment as a lot to do with creating a LC envirnoment. In science it’s difficult due to only having lab tables and needing those for labs. Placing felt on the bottom allows me to change the set up frequently! #LeadLAP
A2: ALL of the Summer PD (Strobel, Ditch, Hive) was rich in these topics- But resources need to be more consistently available. Our division brings in big names to kick off the school year- But we need follow-ups to encourage implementation & a whole-year mindset! #LeadLAP
Q2 #LeadLAP
What PD topics/activities have been helpful in shifting towards learner-centered thinking and implementation in your school?
@bethhouf@burgess_shelley@dellwein
A3: Classrooms begin to open up. Desks are in pods not rows. Student movement is apparent. Teacher is hard to find because they’re “with” the students not at a desk!#LeadLAP Wheres the teacher?? @watkinskaleb
My goal this year is to improve my name memory so name tags still exist :-) but move with the kids #leadlap ive never been a seating chart fan so that helps
We change the physical environment to accommodate all Ss & their learning styles. Small groups and flexible seating allow Ss to feel engaged and have a voice in the classroom. It's not about "how it is", it's about "what works for us". No two classrooms should be alike.
#LeadLAP
A3: There are so many amazing ways to set up a classroom; the set up has to fit the teacher for it to be effective. Students should walk into a classroom and feel like it's a place they want to be, a place in which learning is the focus, and a place that inspires them. #leadlap
A3: After seeing @mccoyderek and @dellwein this summer we worked hard to open up collaborative student spaces throughout the building! 1938 construction got nothing on us! #leadlap
A3: I just switched rooms and haven’t had a chance to take pics...flexible seating, maker spaces, tables...I also do room transformations based on the themes my Ss choose. Their first choice will be coming up in September. #Leadlap
A3: If the focus is on what the students need for learning instead of what the adults need or think is proper, then we can find a way to make the environment meet the personalized needs of our learners #LeadLAP
A3: I think Ts under estimate what the environment has to offer in terms of SEL but academics also, I believe it is currently an untapped learning resource! #LeadLAP
A3: Changing the physical environment can make it more learner-centered? Yes. I'm recalling a former tweet that changed my thinking. #LeadLAPhttps://t.co/NpOu7c3QWT
Two years ago we removed the biggest bank of lockers to create this collab workspace for students. When I see this many students working at that space, I think we need MORE spaces!
Principal Mission: Create spaces Ss want to do next-level work
A3: @MrazKristine@christine_hertz do a really great job sharing what a physical learning environment should look like - including Ss in the decisions is vital. Create a "skeleton" to start with & invite students to construct THEIR learning space. #LeadLAP
Carving out time allows people to be in the moment rather than feeling pressured, leading to stress. I believe many teachers see what they want to happen, but need to be supported. #leadLAP
A3: "Engineer the environment for success." I'll be putting things students need (Papers and books) on their tables before school starts. Also, less "Sage on Stage" more student talk. #LeadLAP
And as Ts, we have to be okay with this! So many Ts have said that it drives them crazy to have Ss standing beside the desk or sitting on the floor. We have to allow them to own their learning, including the conditions of the environment. #LeadLAP
A3: One #rockstar T I know uses flexible seating to promote S collaboration and allow for S choice when it comes to “where” they want to complete this learning. #Leadlap
So close to getting my classroom done! I’ll try to take a video of it tomorrow after my @DIGICOMLearning training! Excited for the 2018-2019 school year @EarhartExplorer@DesertSandsUSD to start!
Yes but if they are overwhelmed and stressed, they may think, "I could just tell them in 30 seconds. Why spend a whole class period playing with it?" Disaffected Ts tell Ps who naturally worry about "fluff." #leadlap
We did Caine's Arcade a couple years ago with cardboard, we've done project runway with recycled materials & garbage bags & last year's cardboard challenge was games. #LeadLAP
A3 Comfort, safety, flexible. Rigid is out. Trust is in. We have a responsibility for security and order in our building. BUT that should not translate to a sterile/bland building. Those things should be transparent to the learning. #LeadLAP

A3: Interesting tidbit in doing some mini research on the topic polled students who said their chair is the most important item. Consensus is must swivel or move. Non confining. Also large display screen very important to them. #LeadLAP
A3: Create flexible, comfortable, and happy spaces that allow Ss to create, collaborate, and communicate in meaningful ways ...and encourage fun, play, and laughter. #leadlap
A3) Classroom environment is huge! Flexible seating is as much a mindset as a location. S engagement skyrockets when they feel included, comfortable, & trusted. Here's our first try at #FlexibleSeating this year. #LeadLaphttps://t.co/uZUDx4YJZi (We'll see if the video works.)
A4: It's where mistakes happen, you learn from them. You don't put someone down or act out because someone else is doing better. You learn from each other, and take control of your learning. #LeadLap
A3: Change the physical environment and also use different spaces. Don't forget to go outside. Let students DO the learning. https://t.co/1NZILixV7M#LeadLAP
A4: Ss feel safe around each other. They support each other and can speak to each other. They know how to problem solve with each other. Build the relationships & trust. #LeadLAP

A4: Ss are self-managed. There is a comfort among Ss to offer constructive criticism and because they own their learning, they don't want other Ss messing with their instruction - which leads to mutual respect among Ss. Love @PaulSolarz#LearnLAP for more on this! #LeadLAP
A3 In my experience, the physical environment that embraces S centered learning feels free. One can see this not only with Ss moving around, sharing their learning, and tasking risks, but by the looks on their faces:) #leadlap
A4: Every person's voice is honored in a learner-centered classroom. When we build a family culture, we don't have to work about management. Respect, kindness, listening, and sharing become a way of life #LeadLAP#CultureMatters
A3: It is amazing how the feel of my classroom changes after I introduce the flexible seating! I usually walk in and say "Now THIS is more like it!" The energy change is fantastic! #leadlap

A4 It’s not about the adults - it’s about kids and their needs. We should not use teaching strategies that we like but instead use strategies that help kids learn - empower kids, give them choice/voice, personalize learning and model risk taking #LeadLAP

A4 there is collaboration, learning and growing together, fun in learning, risk taking and students know they are supported, and students step in and help their peers, #leadlap
A3: Flexible Seating, obviously- Mainly though just allowing the learning space to organically transform into what the students need. Not being static & having a designated “space” for each resource. Giving students freedom to work alone, or not... with tech, or not. #LeadLAP
It’s interesting how sometimes what we think they’ll prefer isn’t the same year to year. This past year our coffee table was rarely used. I like that you do surveys too, so great to gain the insights from learners! #leadlap
A4: Culture is:
All bring value
Feedback/ Self Assessment
Collaboration
Connecting/Relating
Strengths are recognized
About the learning, not the end
product! #LeadLAP
Yes, this is crucial! We discuss what respect looks like and sounds like and come to consensus on how respect will look and sound in our classroom #leadLAP
A4: Every person's voice is honored in a learner-centered classroom. When we build a family culture, we don't have to work about management. Respect, kindness, listening, and sharing become a way of life #LeadLAP#CultureMatters
A4: Ss know when your for real, and when you are only worried about yourself or scores. Love your students! Do amazing things for and with them and they will return the effort, and energy. My kids feed off my #joy ! #LeadLap

It embraces collaborative over individual, dynamic over static, allows space for adaptability, sees the creative and innovative thinking as a daily process of evolving, based in a beginners mindset and allows for an openness to experience. #leadlap
A4 Collaboration, respect, failure with support from peers, kindness, peer building relationships, motivating, love, families in the classroom! #LeadLAP
A4: Learner-centered culture puts the teacher in the role of learning facilitator, rather than instructor. It’s a huge shift, especially at the HS level, where you still see a lot of the “Sage on the Stage” mentality. #LeadLAP
A4: In a learner-centered culture, the learners celebrate each other. They cheer each other on. They recognize the positive & offer support. It’s Ss filling each other’ buckets w/ kind words or Ts sending each other positive notes while they wait at the copier. #LeadLAP

A4: Students feel safe to engage with the teacher and each other. You see them sharing parts of themselves with one another. The products they are asked to produce are realvent to them & students have multiple ways to demonstrate mastery.
#LeadLAP
A4 Learners begin to identify strengths of peers and uplift and add-value as they collaborate effectively. In our class students are empowered to do call-response to share our and use conversation stems that become part of our daily language. #leadLAP
Absolutely!! We also team up. So our younger kids are buddies with the older. The runway was our gym and they had time to plan, bring resources and then on the big day had 30-60 minutes to put their outfits together! Amazing what little brains come up with! #LeadLAP
A4) For the past couple of years, we've created class mission statements. It provides us with a purpose, common goal, and redirects us back to our WHY as we progress through the year. I can't wait to see where this year's learners want to go. #LeadLap
And it is sooo much more fun to be a learning partner rather than an expert or sage. Partners are part of the community and excitement. Sages are solitary icons. Not nearly as much opportunity for growth and relationships. #LeadLAP
A4: High levels of st-to-st collaboration. Ss must learn how to work together effectively and respectfully; these skills must be taught. Also, honoring the cultures of Ss is critical and provides awesome learning opportunities for all students. T have to know their Ss. #leadlap
A4: In a learner-centered culture, Ss are immersed and own their learning. Learning is meaningful, relevant, and playful! Ss become passionate, empowered learners. #leadlap
Q5 #LeadLAP
We are committed to seeing learners demonstrate their understanding/what they’ve learned in different ways.
What are the different ways we encourage variety in demo’ng understanding?
Yes! This is the type of classroom that promotes that “student centered” culture! Aren’t our Ss our customers?? Don’t they deserve to have a part of their learning? #Leadlap
A4: It’s a culture that focuses on relationships and life long learning. We learn it’s okay to fail and we learn how to work with others. We also keep things positive and have fun. When things get tough, we work through it as a team. When things go well, we celebrate! #Leadlap
Q5 #LeadLAP
We are committed to seeing learners demonstrate their understanding/what they’ve learned in different ways.
What are the different ways we encourage variety in demo’ng understanding?
A4: Students feel safe & open to express/defend their opinions in discussions, even when dissenting. Students feel accountable to themselves & peers- following through on their commitments to the group & quick to offer assistance to peers in need. #LeadLAP

Q5 #LeadLAP
We are committed to seeing learners demonstrate their understanding/what they’ve learned in different ways.
What are the different ways we encourage variety in demo’ng understanding?
A4: Culture in classrooms begins with culture around the entire school. A classroom can have a strong culture without a strong school culture, but it is so difficult on the teacher. Culture takes work on the part of everyone. #leadlap
Yes - from the first week, I tell students that everything we do should have a purpose and if they don't know what that is, they have a responsibility to find out - we reflect on this often #leadLAP
A5: Our older students use technology a lot. Our younger students use maker or art often. I've witnessed more this past year Ss verbalizing their learning to show their understanding - I really liked it! #LeadLAP
Q5 #LeadLAP
We are committed to seeing learners demonstrate their understanding/what they’ve learned in different ways.
What are the different ways we encourage variety in demo’ng understanding?
A5: Students should have choice in showing their learning. Some may choose to go old school but with technology, there are so many options including presentation, projects, tests, portfolios, etc. The most important thing is that we make it stick #LeadLAP
Whatever way they want to. If I ask for the kids to create a drawing and a kid tells me they can’t but offered to create a poem, I tell them great! Let them choose! #Leadlap
A5: Shifting from everyone creating the same product to giving students freedom to choose how to show their learning. Video, blog, poster, TedTalk, Ignite session, music, art, minecraft - whatever the S wants to create to showcase mastery should be encouraged. #LeadLAP
So. In thinking about this. We WANT Ss to be our customers, but the system is designed more to be that parents are the customers, or the state, or the federal government. This is the challenge. Keeping Ss centered with all the competing interests! #leadLAP
A5: I am working on a student curated hyperdock where learners reflect daily on essential questions, create iterations of answers as their understanding improves and ideate questions of their own to pursue in order to achieve targets and pursue interests/passions. #LeadLAP
A4: Learner centered classrooms celebrate, encourage, and support each other. Peer interactions are a direct effect of how strong a culture in a classroom is. The teacher knows content is important, but used SEL and soft skills as the filter for organizing for learning. #leadlap
I love choice boards! Especially if we can integrate technology as well. Ss can be shy or apprehensive about showing their learning. If it is truly about what they know, presenting in front of the entire class is NOT the only option. Let their passion & creativity shine!
#LeadLAP
Q5 #LeadLAP
We are committed to seeing learners demonstrate their understanding/what they’ve learned in different ways.
What are the different ways we encourage variety in demo’ng understanding?
A5: We have had students present their learning in staff meetings. It is always a hit. It isn't just like giving a speech or showing a project but they tell us about their own learning process. #LeadLAP
A5: Number Talks are great for encouraging variety in demonstrating understanding. How did you see that group of dots? Did someone see it/ solve it a different way? #LeadLAP
And it is sooo much more fun to be a learning partner rather than an expert or sage. Partners are part of the community and excitement. Sages are solitary icons. Not nearly as much opportunity for growth and relationships. #LeadLAP
A5 Whatever way they want to. If I ask for the kids to create a drawing and a kid tells me they can’t but offered to create a poem, I tell them great! Let them choose! #Leadlap
A5: This is another huge shift. It’s okay to allow students different opportunities to demonstrate their learning - one size does not fit all. #LeadLAP
It is so important to embrace an AND mindset…
Too often we forget the importance of the adults in the organization also being empowered learners. If we want empowered learners in the classroom, we need empowered learners at all levels modeling that learning. #leadlap
A5: I was in a class last year where teacher was introducing measurement. She said, You are clearly the experts here. Show me how you know . . . . " I loved that. It was 1st G and they felt so important. #leadlap
A5: Always looking for a variety of ways for students to demonstrate their understanding. Yesterday we used Playdough to represent meaning in their choice novels we read the summer #LeadLAP
A5: This is a scary one- allowing students to have the choice. Diving into PBL and how it provides choice, voice, and connection to demonstrate knowledge. #LeadLAP
A5 I enjoy providing a lot of options and also being open to student ideas, paper, #edtech, whatever promotes student choice and creativity, also had Ss share with Ts at PD and other conferences, especially #pbl#leadlap
#leadlap A5

I agree, but I also think it is important to push them to learn new ways to show what they have learned. Otherwise they can get stuck in comfortable. We need to have suggestions that encourage growth. #LeadLAP
A5: I also appreciate how our district has modeled this for our staff learning as well. PD comes in many forms. Badging is a fav of mine! https://t.co/Y5uRcEygnJ#LeadLAP
And all the boatloads of legitimate research we can throw will likely bounce back with a few that seem to contradict because "limitations" are not widely understood. Example: CCSS are hugely needed but... #leadlap

A5: If we want to know if students understand something, sometimes we just need to ask them. If we truly listen, they’ll tell us amazing things. Presentations, demonstrations, exhibitions, authentic writing, collaborative conversations...those are good, too. #LeadLAP
A5:
T1: Kids must learn how to speak effectively, so we will be presenting our projects in front of the class. They have to get used to it.
T2: Agreed. Let’s give them options like narrating a video, making a video of their speech through YouTube, etc.
Choices.
#leadlap
A5 I need to push myself to do this more, but having Ss lead PD was invaluable. Not only did I see what they understood loud and clear, but it was empowering for them and the Ts/admin who attended! #leadlap
Being a Servant Leader requires consistency, trust and intentional serving. This suggest none of those. Don’t create teachers of obligation- it makes the kids an obligation! Create leaders- create one in yourself too! #truth@DrMarcusJackson
Love this! When we empower learners to take the lead, engage in productive struggle, then share understanding and learning, we unleash potential! #leadLAP

A5: many kids have their own vlogs, blogs, YouTube channels, Insta and Snap, etc. they are producing very high level pieces for the world to see. An essay or test shared with the teacher is no longer meaningful to them, if that’s the only way they demonstrate learning. #leadlap

Sometimes I included limitations of the “norm" along with possible options. It kind of pushes them out of the comfortable nest while giving them a parachute, so they don’t fall. #LeadLAP
A5: I'm thinking about posing or asking for a prompt, question, or a problem to solve, making resources available, and inviting learners to do the critical thinking. #LeadLAP
A6: First and foremost is building that rapport and relationships. We need to know what makes our kids tick. Once we know that, we can personalize learning. Start with relationship building. Get to curriculum later #LeadLAP
A6: Making time for team meetings w/ Ts, Admin, Learning Support & TAs to talk about kids. It costs $$ for subs but the knowledge we gain from the # of ppl in the room is so important. #LeadLAP

A6: Planning on independent writing time after lunch daily. Students do not have to share what they write with me, but can if they want. Building relationships and trust goes a long way toward individualization. #LeadLAP
Gotta jump off, #LeadLAP crew! Saturday is calling - and so is the laundry. Can’t wait to read the chat posts later! Awesome questions @mccoyderek! Thanks for helping us focus on the learner! We’re are learners!
A6: To borrow from @gcouros, we all need to innovate inside the boxes our systems create for us. We all have mandates, but the way the students achieve and express the mandates can be personalized. There is also always wiggle room to add student choice. Find your wiggle! #LeadLAP
A6: I love seeing stations in classrooms for differentiating as well as utilizing tech so Ss can work at their level—the idea of everyone doing the same thing has never been the answer.... #leadlap
Yes! The element of choice is so important. Also having Ss come up with ways to teach others what they have learned (e.g. ‘Mitosis in 30 seconds’ on YouTube was an inspired approach) #LeadLAP
A5: Shifting from everyone creating the same product to giving students freedom to choose how to show their learning. Video, blog, poster, TedTalk, Ignite session, music, art, minecraft - whatever the S wants to create to showcase mastery should be encouraged. #LeadLAP
a6 Personalizing math (or sci, comp sci...) for my 150 Ss is now possible thru inquiry-based learning, supplemented with Khan. When I see an issue, that S & their P gets an email from Khan about the gap & how to fix it. #leadlap

You cannot personalize learning if you do not know your Ss. Get to know who they are & how they learn. Meet them on their level & bring the learning to them. Differentiate, modify, allow collaborative time & above all show them your desire to include everyone.

A6: So important to spend time building relationships and a positive, safe, and encouraging community right from the start! Read about how I start out the year in my blog post, Magical Beginnings! https://t.co/M3XMWLzEj0#leadlap#MLmagical
A6 #geniushour has allowed personalized learning to come to life in the most unexpected ways, but if nothing else, we need to simply ask Ss what they are passionate about and make it a point to do something with the information they give us. Connection is KEY. #leadlap
A6: We have an amazing advisory program led by students. Ss learn about topics & develop skills related to growth mindset, positivity, mindful, and many others. The activities including reflections allow Ss to learn about themselves & build meaningful peer relationships. #leadlap
A7: According to a survey I gave Ss last year after reading #LetStudentsSpeak, our Ss felt they did not have as much voice as they'd like. We are working to change that this year through intentionally providing voice in multiple ways. #LeadLAP
