Sandrine from IL, #apbio teacher! #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:09 PM EDT
Q1: Great question. For AP Lit, I think the type of writing they do in AP Art transfers very well. Is this what you're asking? #APTeach
  • effortfuleduktr Sep 5 @ 9:10 PM EDT
    A1 - I guess a similarity among different FRQ/DBQ strategies in the humanities. #apteach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:11 PM EDT
A1: The combination of claim & evidence seems to have application across many disciplines. Many tests are asking our students to take a stand on an issue or problem, & defend it using evidence from a text set or from interpretation. It's a transferable skill to real life #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Q1: I also see a lot of commonalities in the types of thinking they do in music courses as transferable to AP Lit and Comp. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Tough class and tough teaching assignment. Welcome Sandrine we are happy to have you! #APTeach
    In reply to @go_science_go
  • tbonuma Sep 5 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Tatiana Bonuma, Principal at West Leyden. Looking forward to learning how to support my AP students and teachers via #APteach
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:11 PM EDT
Amy from South Dakota. I teach AP Lang. I think asserting a position and supporting with evidence transcends multiple tests. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Question #2 coming right up... #APTeach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A1: Ss need to support their ideas. I imagine they also need to explain that support. In addition, kiddos need to organize their writing and utilize transitions. I think these are qualities of writing that cross areas of AP as well as benefit kiddos in the long run. #apteach
  • mrsramireza Sep 5 @ 9:12 PM EDT
Yes. And teaching students how to determine credibility is key. Easy for students to take a stand and find a vague source to justify- however teaching and modeling credible sources for claim and evidence is imperative. #APTeach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Question 2: Have there been or are there opportunities to collaborate with colleagues to teach AP style writing? #APTeach
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:13 PM EDT
Lisa Tackett, Bethany, OK AP Stats and AP Calc sorry I'm late. #apteach
  • emilysadlervie1 Sep 5 @ 9:13 PM EDT
For Q1 - using sophisticated transitional phrases to connect paragraphs - seems important in all disciplines. #apteach
  • rpovlacs Sep 5 @ 9:13 PM EDT
A1: for #APUSH, #APWorld #APgopo S’s must learn same skills (context, thesis, argument, use of evidence) these skills also transfer across other disciplines #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:14 PM EDT
Q1: I think most important thing is the types of thinking AP Lit Ss need to do that leads away from formulaic thinking. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:14 PM EDT
    #APTeach Q2
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:14 PM EDT
A1: After two years at the reading I have found many points are lost for lack of clear communication on the AP Stats exam. #apteach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: I have not been subject to collaborating with another AP teacher about writing, but it would be beneficial for the kiddos. It would be nice to have a school in which the writing that is completed for one test is also assessed in the writing/ELA program. #apteach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:15 PM EDT
Q2: Five years ago, my AP Stats colleague and I had our Ss collaborate in research on banned books. Presented poster style. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:15 PM EDT
What is holding you back?! I think it is powerful to have adults speaking the same language to kids :) #APTeach
    In reply to @ArnoldSarah97
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: We have not collaborated about teaching writing. We should look into it. #apteach
  • SnySciCHS Sep 5 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: I think APLANG and I (APCHEM) get a chance to collaborate. But I'm over the top when it comes to writing scientifically. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2: Absolutely! With certain disciplines, the prompts are very similar and the rubrics demand some of the same criteria. #APLit and #APLang should be talking a ton to #APUSH and #APEuro #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:16 PM EDT
There are SOOO many opportunities to collaborate between your two subjects! #APTeach
    In reply to @vperson
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2: We have an accellerated 9th and 10th grade English to build skills prior to AP. #APTeach
  • rpovlacs Sep 5 @ 9:16 PM EDT
A2: it’s easier to collaborate with colleagues within a dept. on strategies than across disciplines #APTeach
  • emilysadlervie1 Sep 5 @ 9:17 PM EDT
A2: I think World Languages could have great cross over with the other humanities too! Just representing for us! #apteach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:17 PM EDT
The project was amazing. We did it after our exams. I want to do it again, but we're on an A/B day schedule now, halving our time. #APTeach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • emilysadlervie1 Sep 5 @ 9:17 PM EDT
True, @rpovlacs - makes me want to chat with my other WL colleagues... #apteach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:18 PM EDT
Question 3 coming right up... #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:19 PM EDT
Question 3: How do we navigate the different messages and instructions we give to students about writing expectations and what good writing looks like? Because it differs from teacher to teacher, right? And is that fair? #APTeach
  • rpovlacs Sep 5 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A2: lot of potential topics and willing colleagues to collaborate with but often timing and pacing doesn’t work out between colleagues #APTeach
  • MLCHS_Ruddy Sep 5 @ 9:19 PM EDT
A1. I find that in APHG some of the most common mistakes are in the explanation. This piece is cross-curricular to so many AP Exams. #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:20 PM EDT
Q3: FAB question. It is fair imo bc you good writing takes into acct audience and purpose. They vary some from test to test. #APTeach
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:20 PM EDT
A3: the AP Lit teacher and I check in with each other about language and expectations.#APTeach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3: I think it is essential that students learn the same format; however, in the case of AP, different subjects require different writing. I think this shows the kiddos' expertise. #apteach
  • MLCHS_Ruddy Sep 5 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3. I think by using exemplars, we can have Ss see what we are looking for at Readings, this can be used across all of AP #APTeach
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:21 PM EDT
A3: Also, refering to model texts and sample responses to show quality.#APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A3: We must seek out every opportunity to speak the same language as our colleagues about writing. Students deserve a common message, and if not, we have to be aware of what other teachers are asking them to do, write, and evaluate as "good writing" #APTeach
  • emilysadlervie1 Sep 5 @ 9:22 PM EDT
Hmm, navigating different messages - does a curricular dean oversee expectations in general writing skills across disciplines? #apteach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:22 PM EDT
I love the focus on writing for a specific audience. Those Science folks want something different than the Social Studies folks. But style, transitions, strong verbs, content specific vocabulary, etc.. That binds us! #APTeach
    In reply to @vperson
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:22 PM EDT
A3: I think each exam has variation in what is required, so it is good to have different ways it is presented. #apteach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:23 PM EDT
I agree that there are commonalities but even style varies depending on purpose. My AP Gov colleague expects very diff kind of thesis statement and getting right to facts first. No fluff. #APTeach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • emilysadlervie1 Sep 5 @ 9:23 PM EDT
True, poor kids getting mixed messages - want to train them to define good writing, regardless of differing messages from us (?). #apteach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Question 4 coming right up... #APTeach
  • effortfuleduktr Sep 5 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Perhaps AP Psych is the most informal of writing? Not really sure, but there are no intro or conclusion paragraphs and it's basically understood to just answer the question...no fluff. Ss need to understand that writing in different classrooms is domain-specific. #apteach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Define and apply... Rinse and repeat! #APTeach
    In reply to @effortfuleduktr
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:24 PM EDT
Trying to find copy of thinglink where we presented. If I can, I'll post url. #APTeach
    In reply to @tackulator, @AndrewSharosAP
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Question 4: What are the strategies or common grading practices we all could benefit from using with our students? #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:25 PM EDT
Q4: Since writing is timed, I think AP Ss would benefit from doing timed writes in all AP classes. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:26 PM EDT
    Q4 #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:26 PM EDT
Q4: And modeling the thinking, planning and writing response to writing prompt in all AP classes. #APTeach
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4: I have seen real improvement and focus my not included practice tests in the grade. Students can take risks without fearing it will impact grade.#apteach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: Ss need to practice reading and be cognizant of the subject specific AP rubric. They do not need to earn a grade based on it, but they need to know the writing requirements. They would also benefit from cross-curricular forums. Bring the subjects together... #apteach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Q4: AP Ss would benefit from reading exemplary responses as well; working with rubrics and scoring each other's. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Love this. Never about the grade in an AP class #APTeach
    • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:26 PM EDT
A4: I have seen real improvement and focus my not included practice tests in the grade. Students can take risks without fearing it will impact grade.#apteach
  • emilysadlervie1 Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Q4: I agree on timed writing, but wonder about first giving them time to develop good writing, then progressively narrowing time. #apteach
  • MLCHS_Ruddy Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4. I do FRQ Friday in APHG to really get to the heart of all parts of the writing. I like to have them discussing, reading, writing, reflecting, etc. as often as possible.#APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
Q4: And finally, I think Ss benefit tremendously from doing rewrites and revision work. Opp. to improve. #APTeach
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:27 PM EDT
A4: We could all focus on answering the question. Students often write many words, none of which answer the question that was asked #apteach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:28 PM EDT
I learned a lot from the AP Lit reading, so I always teach my kiddos how to score essays as well. Seeing the good, the bad, and the ugly is a great way to foster growth. #apteach
    In reply to @vperson
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:28 PM EDT
Exactly. Which is why I think a lot of work needs to go in the "thinking" that must come first. #APTeach
    In reply to @tackulator
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:29 PM EDT
Sarah, I've applied to a reader next summer. Hoping to get an invite. #APTeach
    In reply to @ArnoldSarah97
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Question 5 coming right up... #APTeach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Best professional development I've done for my AP Lit class. #apteach
    In reply to @vperson
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:30 PM EDT
I give my Ss legal pads where they do all their timed writes and revisions. So that they can look at first one and see the growth. They also reflect on each timed writing with a protocol. #APTeach

  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Question 5: @All4sand5s suggests to never grade papers by hand, but to sit down with students side by side, and give verbal and written feedback in the form of a writing conference. What are the opportunities and roadblocks to doing this in your class? #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Maybe we'll meet in person next summer at the reading. #APTeach
    In reply to @ArnoldSarah97
  • MLCHS_Ruddy Sep 5 @ 9:31 PM EDT
Yes, it has been game changing in my room for APHG I love being a reader!! #APTeach
    In reply to @ArnoldSarah97, @vperson
  • All4sand5s Sep 5 @ 9:31 PM EDT
    Hey that’s me!
#APTeach
  • effortfuleduktr Sep 5 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Probably the biggest roadblock is time. #apteach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP, @All4sand5s
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Q5: I've done both. I know the "grade" is not the point and I preach that, but for a lot of my seniors, that's the motivation. I put comments/score on it, and I confer. #APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:32 PM EDT
I think Question 5 applies to complex science and math problems, too. How can we make feedback more personal? #APTeach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:32 PM EDT
    Perfect! Get ready, KC... #apteach
    In reply to @vperson
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Before, after, lunch, study hall, and even during class? #APTeach
    In reply to @effortfuleduktr, @All4sand5s
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5:Time. I can read and score essays faster than conferencing, but have been working to build conferencing in for multidraft essays.#APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A5: Of all the tactical things we did in class, writing conferences was the most impactful. Written feedback is rarely read, and students usually care about the grade on the last page. Make writing feedback personal! #APTeach
  • thebiospace Sep 5 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Unfortunately no but writing in #APBio is so different than writing in other disciplines. #APTeach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:33 PM EDT
I cannot imagine missing it. #apteach
    In reply to @MLCHS_Ruddy, @vperson
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:33 PM EDT
    I see you @thebiospace #APTeach :)
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:34 PM EDT
We do creative writing in AP Lit as well. What better way to analyze a poem than from a writing perspective. Study poetry? Write a poem. #APTeach
  • MLCHS_Ruddy Sep 5 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4. TIME is the biggest road block right now...I have 100 AP students and that is freaking me out, I want to try it. I can see the benefit. I am trying to see if I can do it in a Titan Time period we offer each week. #apteach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:34 PM EDT
That is an #APTeach connection right there!
    In reply to @ArnoldSarah97, @vperson
  • rpovlacs Sep 5 @ 9:34 PM EDT
A4: modeling, teach the rubric early on, writing conferences and rewrites, use the score to convert to grade, make students write in sentences instead of bullet points #APTeach
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:34 PM EDT
Moving towards not putting a grade on work. Only feedback. #APTeach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A5: Time. I do not have a plan and my room is full at lunch with S's seeking help. Most in sports after school. #apteach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A5: I would love to run a classroom without grades. My kiddos grow so much throughout the year, but they are so upset at the beginning. I conference with them as much as possible. I also try to have them self-assess, so they can make their own path to improvement. #apteach
  • tackulator Sep 5 @ 9:36 PM EDT
A5: I have started putting one word comments then we discuss what is meant by that as a class. Admin wants grades so do P's. #apteach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:38 PM EDT
Admin, Ps and a LOT of my Ss (who have never known an experience without "grades" as the motivator) want the number. Challenging to balance. #APTeach
    In reply to @tackulator
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Final question 6 coming right up... #APTeach
  • vperson Sep 5 @ 9:39 PM EDT
Good writing is good thinking. Writing can be "pretty" and conventionally correct, but no substance. It has to has to have in-depth thinks. And creative assignments prompt that. #APTeach
    In reply to @emilysadlervie1
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:40 PM EDT
Question 6: Ultimately, where does writing fit in the pantheon of skills you are trying to teach in your class? Why? #APTeach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:40 PM EDT
A couple of times I have just put x's at the end of lines with mistakes and gave them comments without a grade. The grade posted 48 hours later. They were revising their essays before they even knew if their grade required it. #lovedit #apteach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • effortfuleduktr Sep 5 @ 9:41 PM EDT
33% of the exam...definitely focus on the skills, but definitely focus more on vocabulary and content knowledge in AP Psych. #apteach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:41 PM EDT
Final question of the night. Will announce the topic for next month in 10 minutes #APTeach
  • MrsWalkerERHS Sep 5 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A6: For the #APUSHExam it's one of my top priorities bc it holds so much weight for their overall score. I "game the system" as best I can, teaching forulaic writing (which I truly hate), but helps kids perform better on the exam. #APteach
    In reply to @AndrewSharosAP
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:42 PM EDT
For sure. I think vocab is the anchor. Writing is the vessel that helps students explain what they know in #APPsych #APTeach
    In reply to @effortfuleduktr
  • AmyEckart01 Sep 5 @ 9:42 PM EDT
A6: At the top. Everything we do in AP Lang is about writing along with reading and Thinking. These are all equal. Daily notebook writing, mentor modelling, and in class essay writing.#APTeach
  • AndrewSharosAP - Moderator Sep 5 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A6: 45% of our test was writing, so yes, good writing can make up for A LOT of other things when being assessed on the national exam. 1. Culture of the class 2. Reading 3. Writing 4. Content In that order... #APTeach
  • ArnoldSarah97 Sep 5 @ 9:43 PM EDT
A6: Writing is a MAJOR part of the AP Lit test, but most importantly, it is necessary for their lives. Whether they are taking the test or not, I want them to leave my classroom with the ability to communicate clearly. #apteach
