Hi, I am Cindy from Corsicana, and to me, student voice means more than just writing an essay. It means giving students a platform to express their thoughts & ideas to change the world around them. #EDpiper
Barbara Page, teacher & EdD student in Waco, TX but from Miami, FL! "Student voice" means Ss feeling comfortable and SAFE enough to express their thoughts & ideas with our classroom family! #EDpiper

Dan, business teacher from St. Louis. To me "student voice" means that all students have the ability in various forms to share what is going on in their head. #edpiper
@Owl_b_TorresEdu is our lead moderator for #EDpiper tonight. The students referenced this evening shared their powerful stories at this year's National Council of Teachers of English conference. @ncte#NCTE18
Hi all!! Jessica, Ed Specialist at ESC Region 12 in TX...so excited to discuss some of my recent #NCTE experience with my #EDPiper family tonight. #studentvoice means listening for possibilities regardless of age...allowing Ss voice to have an impact on education and the world.
Good evening everyone. Elyse from North Texas checking in. Social Emotional teacher. Student voice means students are given outlets to have their voices be heard and valued for what they say. #EDpiper
Good evening! Lindsey from Waco. Student voice means listening to what students have to say, giving them that opportunity to share, and allowing them to personalize their educational journey. #edpiper
Q1: Sixth grader Olivia Van Ledtje (@thelivbits) stated that “activism comes from creation”. How can we encourage students to create not just for fun, but for impact from the classroom? #EDpiper
One of the things that really impacted me during the conference was how little we listen when we don't like the way Ss use their voice...huge connection to #SEL#EDpiper
Hi, I am @DrJohnsonEDU, Principal and Co-moderator of #EDpiper. Welcome to our chat tonight. Student voice is huge! It is the what we give our students to empower and equip them for their future.
A1: There are times that I have students create a project that is open ended, meaning that they are able to express their learning in various ways. #edpiper
Moving student voice from "just for fun" to "making a difference" begins with helping students find the deeper meaning for their life & the blessings of seeing themselves as contributors rather than recipients. #EDpiper
Paige from Waco... S voice to me means that the Ss have options when it comes to their learning. They have choices in how they demonstrate what they know and understand. #EDPiper
Laurie Vondersaar, Technology Director from Austin, TX! Student's voice is vital! It gives students the opportunity to engage, own and direct their learning. #edpiper
A1: First, everyone needs to follow @thelivbits now. Second, she's right...makerspace can be so impactful on the lives of others if we help steer Ss that direction. I'm a huge proponent of service learning projects. #EDpiper
A1: Shaping pedagogy around depth- not just for the present school year, but for the ripple effect it will have on their lives & in their communities! It all goes back to Ss seeing the relevancy in the instruction #EDpiper
Q1: Sixth grader Olivia Van Ledtje (@thelivbits) stated that “activism comes from creation”. How can we encourage students to create not just for fun, but for impact from the classroom? #EDpiper
Ss have power and once they figure out what that power truly is and what it means, they have a chance to do great things. They have the power to change the world. #edpiper
A1: Allowing students to open up their own worlds and bring that into learning moves away from the “just for fun” aspect! I love @thelivbits. Y’all need to follow her! #EDpiper
#edpiper Ss who believe they have a voice in school are seven times more
likely to be academically motivated than students who do not believe they have a voice (Quaglia Institute for School Voice and Aspirations, 2016). Woah!!! I'm @dawsonshari5 Dawson, Inst. Coor.
I was in a math class recently where the T used inquiry in a small group to keep conversation about rolling. She never told Ss if they were wrong/right about a challenge. Instead, the Ss drove the conversation until they knew they'd discovered the answer. #EDpiper
A1: I think students need to be exposed to real-world problems, both locally and globally. @Owl_b_TorresEdu was right when she said Ss need to feel like they are heard so that they realize they can make a difference. #edpiper
Q2: Jordyn Zimmerman (@jordynbzim) is an autistic student who struggled for years to be able to communicate her needs and ideas to teachers. How do we ensure that all of our students are heard and supported, specifically those with special needs? #EDpiper
A1:One of the most important factors in Ss achievement has to do with Ss level of effort and GRIT. The > choice, control, challenge, and opportunities for collaboration, the > motivation and engagement. #edpiper@desotoisdengage
A1- Exposing Ss to real world situations and give opportunities to problem solve. Ex. One our Ts @jo_spark had taught her kids about elections and how few people vote. Her 5th graders created a voting campaign and even manned a booth at school to register voters. #EDpiper
A great way to ensure that all students are heard is to develop an accountability system for yourself as a teacher. A check-in system. Who has been too quiet lately? Who's falling through the cracks? Who's ideas are being overlooked? Get students to help you. #EDpiper
A2: I typically approach them and have a side conversation to come up with a "code word" or gesture that I'm looking for their input, or if they're comfortable to share with the class. #edpiper
Here's a video of a presentation that @jordynbzim made prior to #NCTE18...I didn't have video from the conference because like most others I sat in awe of her strength and honesty. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/75xQCDhPcu
A2 Students with disabilities deserve the quality instruction in their setting. How and what may vary however students of all abilities must be included. #EDpiper
A2: Get to know the HOW for ALL your Ss. HOW they communicate, how they develop those relationships & HOW to earn that trust. Families tend to be the biggest support in this case! #EDpiper
Q2: Jordyn Zimmerman (@jordynbzim) is an autistic student who struggled for years to be able to communicate her needs and ideas to teachers. How do we ensure that all of our students are heard and supported, specifically those with special needs? #EDpiper
A2: I think all kids need that person on campus that they trust-their "champion"-but I think this is most important for our students with special needs. They need a positive relationship with an adult on campus so that they are heard. #edpiper
Van Ledtje's quote reminds me that our drives come from our passions. Our passions come from a deeper part of us. Encourage Ss to use passions, strengths & skills to make a difference. This kind of tchg takes time & investment, but the fruits of labor are worth it. #EDpiper
Q1: Sixth grader Olivia Van Ledtje (@thelivbits) stated that “activism comes from creation”. How can we encourage students to create not just for fun, but for impact from the classroom? #EDpiper
A2: we need to stand up for all of our students especially our students that struggle to do it on their own. We need to teach them how to get their voices heard. #edpiper
Q2: Jordyn Zimmerman (@jordynbzim) is an autistic student who struggled for years to be able to communicate her needs and ideas to teachers. How do we ensure that all of our students are heard and supported, specifically those with special needs? #EDpiper
A2: We have to remember that education is not abt Ss conforming to a mold...it's about helping them get their voice out and discovering their learning path. #EDpiper
A2: The ones that I have built a relationship with know that I was in their shoes. They know that I had an IEP growing up and learned to overcome it. #edpiper
John from Mexico City checking in late! A2: check in regularly to make sure the voices you are listening to are not just the loudest in the room. Amplify the voice of those that are quieter and you may be very surprised by what you hear! #EDpiper
Treating all students with lots of love and respect first of all. Secondly, we must develop a relationship...no matter the disability. Third, "student voice" may look different for every single child. It's our job to help our students learn how to use their voice. #EDpiper
Q2: Jordyn Zimmerman (@jordynbzim) is an autistic student who struggled for years to be able to communicate her needs and ideas to teachers. How do we ensure that all of our students are heard and supported, specifically those with special needs? #EDpiper
Jason here from Longmont CO, A2: Taking time to have individual check-ins with Ss about their goals, and not just their project goes a long way to them feeling safe to answer "What do you need from me?" #EDpiper@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechBingo
A2: In order for students to be fully engaged in their learning they students must have an avenue to express themselves in ways that allow them to feel safe and honored. #edpiper
A2- All Ss need to be heard and we should seek out those who have special needs as well as our English language learners to ensure all kids are valued. #EDpiper
Children are a blessing! As educators, we must actively seek to treasure ALL of our students & value every minute of the short time they pass through our classrooms. #EDpiper
A3: My focus has been on literature that centers around #LGBTQ Ss...finding great literature that I can share with Ss and others who may have a negative viewpoint. Texas is a hard state to conquer, but all of our Ss deserve to have allies on their side. #EDpiper
A great way to ensure that all students are heard is to develop an accountability system for yourself as a teacher. A check-in system. Who has been too quiet lately? Who's falling through the cracks? Who's ideas are being overlooked? Get students to help you. #EDpiper
A3: This is such an important question! Our Ss are watching to see if we are real or if we only want them to be themselves within constraints that are outdated and comfortable. #TimeToStretch#EDpiper
A3: Letting them know that everyone has an opportunity to learn regardless. I also have a sign on my door saying that it's an inclusive and accepting space. #edpiper
A1: I think when I get my students to go from "What's the answer!" to "I have a question!" I know they are going to make an impact. #EDpiper@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechBingo
A3: All about our classroom climate! What do our classrooms say about how Ss feel in it? We cannot make subjects taboo or unheard of in our classrooms. This all needs to be reflected in our conversations #EDpiper
A3: I mean it when I say to be whoever you are. We love everyone in my room. They all know they are welcome and we will use pronouns if students wish. Everyone needs to be kind and just care for all. #edpiper
A3- All students should be valued and respected- no matter their differences. We have to take time to build relationships with students so they know they are valued and heard. #EDpiper
Q4: “Be the change you want to see in the world” is a favorite phrase of student activist Marley Dias (@iammarleydias). Are we helping our students understand the needs of their local community and how to develop solutions? #EDpiper
A3: I agree with so many of you. Our students need to feel loved and respected, and they will return the same to others (teachers, students, etc.) #edpiper@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechBingo
A4: Our local community has a great teen leadership program that exposes Ss to the power and potential of their voice within local organizations. #EDpiper#TeenLeadershipWaco
A3: It's important that as educators we don't overlook ANYONE! Everyone matters! #YouMatter@desotoisdengage Ss are all humans who deserve a voice. #edpiper
A4: When students start seeing problems as challenges they can help solve then yes. Some needs are easy to see (when our students helped with flood clean-up 5 years ago), but training them to see and respond daily makes an even bigger impact. #EDpiper@SVVSDdts#SVVSDTechBingo
A3: Letting them know that everyone has an opportunity to learn regardless. I also have a sign on my door saying that it's an inclusive and accepting space. #edpiper
A4: We are in the process of building a greenhouse and a small garden. It’s our hope that the Ss are able to take home fresh veggies from the garden. They are learning the process from start (seeds) to finish (produce), and are helping their family in the process. #EDPiper
Checking in here a a parent.
A3) Adults who are not fully accepting must be willing to change. I understand that requires giving up something perceived to be an important part of one’s own identity—such as religious conviction—but you can’t love kids halfway. #EDPiper
A4: I have seen design thinking principles applied to help students use empathy to identify problems in their community and propose solutions. #DesignThinking#EDpiper
A3: I want my Ss to be the best version of themself. I don’t work to change them, but I do work to better them. Not just as a S but as a member of society. #EDPiper
Just a plug for @IDODI ...they have a challenge that requires Ss to identify a problem and develop a solution...starting local is the best way to start! #EDpiper x
A2: 1-1 conversations, small group chats, RELATIONSHIPS! When Ss trust you, they’ll show and tell you everything. It’s hard work, but very necessary! #EDpiper
R1: we need to have more opportunity for Ss to solve problems in society. We need to identify problems from the community and come up with the solution. #EDpiper
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” - Ghandi
Be persistent!
We need to teach our students to listen to their heart's desires. If it's right, moral, and just, then be the change you want to see. #EDpiper
Exactly! How great it would be if all classrooms were #SafeSpaces for our Ss but we need to make sure that kids know where to find their allies! #EDPiper
This is great to hear. I also think it’s important to identify what was being overcome. An IEP is a defiency only in the school being able to adequately educate a kid in the traditional way. #EDPiper
A2: The ones that I have built a relationship with know that I was in their shoes. They know that I had an IEP growing up and learned to overcome it. #edpiper
Q5: Student climate activist/author Xiuhtezcatl Martinez (@xiuhtezcatl) stated, “Young people are not just the future...they are here today.” What global issues are you discussing with your students? #EDpiper
“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” - Ghandi
Be persistent!
We need to teach our students to listen to their heart's desires. If it's right, moral, and just, then be the change you want to see. #EDpiper
R2: there are a lot of different ways to get Ss to voice their opinions. Email, F2F, social media, @Flipgrid all give Ss the opportunity to have a voice. #EDpiper
Just a plug for @IDODI ...they have a challenge that requires Ss to identify a problem and develop a solution...starting local is the best way to start! #EDpiper x
Teaching students to see and feel the heart of others is to build compassion. We should not only strive to be compassionate ourselves, but we should help our students know what this looks and feels like.
#EDpiper
A5: Climate change, immigration, tolerance and respect for other people's beliefs & differences, LOVE & COMPASSION! I drive this home, everyday! #EDpiper
Q5: Student climate activist/author Xiuhtezcatl Martinez (@xiuhtezcatl) stated, “Young people are not just the future...they are here today.” What global issues are you discussing with your students? #EDpiper
R3: having friends and relatives in the LBGTQ community, I try to be cognizant of my Ss and their needs. Any negativity is squashed in my room. Expectations are set day 1. #EDpiper
Agreed. While it had its limitations on my overall learning. Over time I found ways to become better than it and ultimately "overcome it". I have my paperwork in my bag as a constant reminder. #edpiper
A5: Don't avoid the tough topics...our Ss have more insight and answers than most of us...the conversations and the questions that we start today will impact their lives ten-fold. #EDpiper How are you discussing the migrant caravan w/Ss? https://t.co/4PUmGs4N73
A5- The most important thing we talk about that is a global problem is how to talk our problems and compromise. Showing kindness is also huge! I know our 5th graders tackle and discuss immigration. #EDpiper
A4: Ask the question- what do you feel needs to change in your community and how can you help make that change. Then listen to their solutions and help make those changes. #EDpiper
R5: Today we watched the Mars Insight probe land on Mars. We discussed how forces are involved. It was a great tie to content on the first day of learning in 2 weeks for this group. #EDpiper
Great idea for a lesson @playfanschool . Using the TIME magazine person of year as a starting point for having students create their own by looking back at 2018. Anyone interested in this template here is my site where you can download this & others https://t.co/XXC77lr2Gv
I have to step out of this great discussion a little early this evening. Thanks, #EDpiper educators, for another great chat. I always feel inspired going into Tuesday. Have a wonderful week!
Q6: We never know our full impact until later. Sara Abou Rashed (@mapofmyself) Palestinian-Syrian poet was encouraged by her teacher to use writing to express herself and her thoughts. What are your next steps after tonight’s chat? #EDpiper
Adriana Pruente, 4th grade Math and Science Teacher in Hewitt. Student Voice is recognizing the gifts of perspective, that every point of view is valuable. Respecting their character so they feel safe and encouraged, that's when learning grows in a classroom community. #EDpiper
A5) It’s important to bring it close to home, because issues are everywhere. What accounts for the higher visibility of hate groups and increasing insensitivity to intolerance? What attitudes exist in our own communities that some might’ve not even seen as intolerance? #EDPiper
Q5: Student climate activist/author Xiuhtezcatl Martinez (@xiuhtezcatl) stated, “Young people are not just the future...they are here today.” What global issues are you discussing with your students? #EDpiper
A5: You have to talk about it. Talk about the tough topics. Help students form their thoughts, concerns, worries, opinions. I am a huge #Newsjunkie and love sharing those conversations with others. #EDpiper
A6: I want to develop a mini-learning series that focuses on raising student voices. Interviews w/students and development of resources for educators and parents who want to empower their youth. #EDpiper
Q2: Coming from a parent of a child with Autism, they are waiting for us to enter their world. "If they cannot learn how we teach, then we need to change the way we teach", find a way to relate, on the floor, under a desk, using toys, videos, comic books, characters... #EDpiper
R6: need to identify a need for our community, figure how to tie to content, and make it happen. Develop more community relationships to enact as well. #EDpiper
A6- I plan to look at our student leadership team and see if we are truly represented. I also want to make sure the student leaders are listening to their classmates as well. #EDpiper
Q4: “Be the change you want to see in the world” is a favorite phrase of student activist Marley Dias (@iammarleydias). Are we helping our students understand the needs of their local community and how to develop solutions? #EDpiper
A6: A great reminder that all Ss have a voice waiting to be heard! How do we continue to set up systems that encourage all Ss to engage actively in their learning while creating an enviornment where they feel safe to share the supports they need to be successful? #edpiper
I am working on diverse literature to enhance learning. If students have better access to books that include images, stories, communities, thoughts, and feelings that reflect themselves, Ss find their voice. @Owl_b_TorresEdu has encouraged me to reach into literature. #EDpiper
Thanks again to @Owl_b_TorresEdu for generating these powerful, thought-provoking questions about raising student voices! We will see you again next Monday to talk about Google tools for the classroom! #EDpiper
R6: need to identify a need for our community, figure how to tie to content, and make it happen. Develop more community relationships to enact as well. #EDpiper
