#musedchat Archive
Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

-
Josh Emanuel, 5-8 general music teacher in NY. Haven’t been on for a chat in way too long.
-
-
Phyllis, Baton Rouge, 5th/6th GM/Choir, checking in for the 1st half of before my last private lesson of the night!
-
Tim, Band Director from Ohio. Also enjoying the live stream of OSU's Percussion Ensemble tonight!
-
Glad you could join us Josh, how are you tonight?
-
Happy Halloween, Phyllis!
-
Sounds awesome, what are they playing?
-
Not sure yet - just started. I'll keep you posted!
-
Hi, I'm Susie. I teach 4th and 5th grade band and 5th grade general music near Sacramento, CA
-
Hello ! Eric Starnes here from Buhler, KS! 5-12 band, long time reader, 2nd time tweeter!
-
Checking into tonight from Maryland. ES band and orchestra.
-
Great to see you Susie, how are you tonight?
-
Glad you're joining us again Eric, how was your Monday?
-
-
. Glad to be here! Finally set an alarm to make tonight. Will have to leave early for trick-or-treating. How are you?
-
Pretty good. Trick-or-treating is all done here, about to enjoy some leftover candy.
-
I’m great Joe! Thanks for asking. Tweeting in between trick or treaters tonight!
-
-
Hi ! Sarah, K-5 music and 5th grade band and chorus in MA.
-
Howdy Sarah, hope you had a good Monday
-
Welcome, Susie! 4th grade band!? That’s something I’d like to see!
-
-
I did! Halloween was much less of a disruption than I predicted!
-
Q1: What tech resources are available to you and your students each day?
-
Hello! Erin from Kansas City. K, 4th, and 6th gm/choir!
-
-
Hi All! Amy From MI. MS band. Joining a little late after out first real Trick or Treating outing. https://t.co/eTSUwLwQN9
-
Ben Meisel in the Cleveland area, 6-8 band. Currently writing a paper & yelling at inanimate objects, so I may be slow!
-
-
, A bit crazy at times, but very rewarding! Thankful to work at a very supportive school who wants to bring music back.
-
Q1: I have 30 Windows laptops and 11 iMacs. Took advantage of the Ableton Push Initiative, so I also have 30 of those.
-
a1: I'm so lucky. Desktop pc , iPad, and an Epson interactive projector w/ 2 pens, plus about 3 sound systems. More on the way.
-
A1: computer w dvd drive, cheap speakers, iPod, projector & screen
-
A1: We are very lucky to have 1:1 iPads. Smartboards in every room, and a few desktop computers in the music wing.
-
Ben, please tell me OSU is going to step it up and beat Michigan this year
-
A1: Fortunate that most students have access to their own devices. Also have a few class iPads and can check out computer lab.
-
A1: I have access to our computer room anytime I want, but currently trying to incorporate more technology. Nada in the classroom
-
Smartboards, Chromebook cart (2 for the bldg), AppleTV (in my room), teacher iPad, iPhone, reasonably good wifi, PA system
-
Could always be warmer, but better than I remember it being "back in the day." :)
-
Not if they keep playing like they have lately. I fear for a post-apocalyptic, mandatory-khaki pants world in our future
-
-
-
A1: District is 1:1 iPad from grades 2-12, SmartBoards in classrooms, teach through a Windows computer.
-
Late to and will prob have to leave early..., but hey, Miki, K-5 General and instrumental music, IL
-
A1: SMART boards, some iPads / Chromebooks. When responsible digital use is demonstrated, student smart phones.
-
Good evening and welcome!
-
How has it been with the BYOD? I have a sneaking suspicion my district is trying to get to that.
-
A1: Plus sound systems in each room.
-
Do you take time to discuss responsible use with your kids?
-
A1: All students 6-12 are 1:1. MS has iPads & HS has MacBook Air. 7 through 12 can take theirs home. Very fortunate.
-
Not bad. I try and find a lot of constructive ways for them to use it regularly....
-
Also have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and a pair of cheap condenser mics to record my groups
-
A1: I have at least 1 iPad/tablet for , SmartBoard, and sometimes I'll have my traveling laptop. Ss don't have phones
-
A1: Also lucky to have some Chromebooks, an Apple TV, and decent sound equipment.
-
A1 Kids just got devices - convertible laptops. Have a laptop for myself, projector, and document camera.
-
Do you find that most Ss have the same/similar devices? How do you deal with compatibility issues?
-
Otherwise I photo bomb their Snaps and put my hands all over their screens if they're playing games. :)
-
A1. 1to1 chrome books. We have promethium boards also.
-
Yes - doesn't always work initially. Some groups are temporarily "suspended" from BYOD use. Will reeducate and try again.
-
Wow, looks like a great night
-
I need to research some smartboard uses for my beginning band!
-
A1: 5th has Chromebooks but one has been caught doing what he shouldn't have by our tech dept- and we're a large district
-
Most of the tech I try and incorporate is device agnostic. A lot of Google Classroom, Bandmate, Tonal Energy, etc.
-
Note reading games and composing - my Ss love to write rhythms by dragging the notes around in Google Slides
-
I'm a fan of the latter. "Ooooh is that a touch screen?!"
-
"What happens if I do this?"
-
Q2: How frequently do you use tech with your instruction? What is your go-to device or app?
-
I'm piloting google classroom this year. Thus far it's pretty good but I have lots to learn
-
A2.1: Daily. My 8 curriculum is entirely DAW-based. 6s do a lot with recording, composing, and computer programming
-
A2: Once every couple of weeks. Unless its holiday season. I usually use and have kids record their centers progress.
-
A2: Though I really need to get caught up with grading right now, I'm all about Google Classroom. https://t.co/qhpdrld5OZ
-
a2: Every single class, every single day. Embedded in what I already do. Google Slides has been so useful
-
A2.2: 8s use a lot of GarageBand, but hoping to use Ableton now that it’s been installed. 6s use Audacity, Scratch, MakeyMakeys
-
A2. I try to use it every class. Either w or note reading activities
-
-
-
A2a: Daily in General Music. Big fan of Explain Everything (interactive PowerPoint). GarageBand great when done right.
-
A2: I use my projector/screen at least once a week. If I had more resources, I'd use them!
-
A2: Daily. SMART board for rhythms. Smart devices for tuning. Sound system for drones / metronomes. Google for playing tests.
-
A2: Constantly use my iPhone for tuning, recordings (quickly deleted), roster in Google Sheets
-
-
A2: Sadly, infrequently. During 3rd trimester we compose our own songs on noteflight and spend 3 days in the computer lab.
-
A2b: I try to DISCONNECT in band. Kids get very heavy screen time daily, I prefer paper. Use iPads for HW/vids in Schoology.
-
Woah! Fingering app looks cool. Is it what I think it is?! I'm not familiar...
-
Have you seen an Android equivalent for Fingerings? Lots of options for indvidual inst, but not all in one.
-
A2.4: Just starting a new project with MakeyMakeys and Soundplant
-
Thanks! Been slacking a bit lately, but I try to post when I can.
-
It's an outstanding fingering chart app. Very user-friendly. Handy since I really suck at bassoon.
-
Sadly no. Only seems to be iOS.
-
Downloading now! Switching kids to oboe and bassoon soon...and I'm going to need help!
-
So much potential for awesome with ! What are your Ss doing w/ them right now?
-
What is Soundplant? Not familiar.
-
A2: Personally, I use tuner and metronome app, and recommend note trainer apps at home.
-
Honestly, it has paid for itself many times over. And it was $8 when I bought it.
-
I just introduced it today. We’ll be programming them to make instruments. Then the Ss will compose/perform
-
A2c: It's very nice having the tech available for band. Tuner, met, video, messages on my stand. But devices away is nice!
-
It allows you to map sounds to your QWERTY keyboard. And there’s a free version!
-
A2 SeeSaw is a huge app for my middle school band classes. Several times a week we are accessing it. Nin-Genius is the other big1
-
-
Burton Hable, jumping in late while making dinner and struggling with participate, band director at Centennial HS in Ankeny, IA
-
That was going to be my next question. Have used Scratch w/ Makeys but not Soundplant.
-
What's for dinner tonight?
-
A2: Google apps forever and ever. Assessment, bell work. Tonal energy, metronomes. Planning on using note reading apps soon
-
Gonna have to talk to our tech dept. about that free version...hmmm.
-
-
We just got an awesome Makerspace. What sort of music projects are you doing?
-
Agreed. I've noticed them as more of a distraction lately. Probably mostly my own fault, but away until I can police.
-
A2: forgot to mention I use Ear Trainer and InTune (iOS) for myself.
-
I will be looking through two of those tonight!
-
-
A2.1: I try incorporating tech each day through bell work (general questions, reflections, etc.) using google forms/onenote.
-
Programming with Scratch and MakeyMakeys. I brought in my LittleBits once last year. Hoping to do more, but no time
-
I am interested in this since I have NO idea what it is!
-
-
A1 Kids are 1:1 with Chromebooks. AppleTV, Airport Express, 12ch soundboard, 2 Yamaha powered speakers, HD projector, 8’ screen
-
Q3: What steps do you take to ensure that your use of tech doesn't become too much of a crutch or hindrance in class?
-
-
A3: Love Tonal Energy and Bandmate but do a lot of singing before we use the app to check for accuracy.
-
A2.2: I'm desperate for more meaningful uses - very excited to go through this thread tonight!
-
3D printer, vinyl cutter, tons of hands-on materials, iRig, and lots of shiny things. I'm still exploring it!
-
a3: Always have a tech-free backup plan and monitor students closely when they're using tech
-
, I feel like we need a separate chat to discuss just apps!
-
My computer just freaked out. Might be a little slow on my phone until it reboots
-
It's been awhile since we had one of those, lots of new ones out since then. Maybe time for another round
-
A3: Routine. Once we set when to use it, S’s are efficient in their use. Rarely “free work time” in class.
-
I'm super jealous! I keep trying to coordinate with the tech dept on some projects. I really want to augment ukes
-
A3: limit tech by design; don't include tech for tech's sake, but if facilitates instruction or response. Lots of home resources
-
A3 I use tech to help the kids visualize many things that they need to HEAR. helps them realize more quickly what they r hearing
-
That's why I love Bandmate with my beginners! The visual has a big impact.
-
A3: Simply keep the students busy and focused. Always include some "if you're finished" task when the iPad is involved.
-
At the risk of some self horn tooting, here's a post I did on an interactive word wall with . https://t.co/fKhZU27V0c
-
A2 Tech is used daily. Tuners, metronomes, Google Classroom, Keynote, Screencastify, Flat.io
-
I use TonalEnergy for drones w/ older Ss. Bandmate more for younger. Love that it shows note on staff.
-
A3: For my own use, I try to move on quickly if something isn't working. Like said, always have a backup!
-
-
Ok, I'm out for the night. Have a great Halloween!
-
-
I've been a sucker for free tuners, but Bandmate looks worth it for my middle schoolers
-
Bandmate has a free option which is plenty for MS Ss.
-
BandMate Shows them their note, on a staff! So worth it! And created by a band director!
-
Just downloaded Bandmate...looks perfect!
-
A3: Not using much of it makes it easy to move on if not working, which happens plenty. 😊 Wifi likes to drop randomly…
-
Apple’s equivalent to PowerPoint
-
Q4: What would you like to be able to do with tech in your classroom in the future?
-
It's a good thing you mentioned free, because I almost bought the $2 totally-not-a-tuner
-
A3: Modeling good use. You can use it if you are using it well. If not, lose the privilege. 1:1 allows monitoring of work outside
-
-
A4: I want to create an open Makerspace; coding, sequencing, instrument design, composing, CREATING music
-
The "concert tipster?" Almost did the same thing...
-
a4: have more tech for students to use all at once - it's in the works!
-
A4: Have some UI ideas for district LMS. Wish more kids had internet at home.
-
Ah. That sounds familiar now. I like my Google stuff so I forget about the Apple options sometimes. :)
-
A4: Fix broken instruments, laser pointer key signatures, and dispense high fives. Anyone know an app maker?
-
My sister did build a fist-bump machine that she programmed with an arduino….
-
Some sort of app with some basic instrument repair stuff in it would actually be pretty awesome...
-
A4: I want to use Facebook live more to promote our program. Rehearsals, performances, etc. A lot like DCI this past season
-
Have you read Invent to Learn or Worlds of Making? Both have a lot of practical ideas.
-
yes please! I’d love a chance for 1:1
-
WebMD for instruments? Call the patent office.
-
A4: And I should probably replace the dead battery in my laser pointer.
-
A4 I wish my kids were more ontop of using tech I offer them at home. But it takes time to create the tech culture
-
I haven’t. I just picked up the Maker Manifesto. But I will definitely have to look into those.
-
A student built his own Launchpad for last spring. I was in awe a little.
-
Got an app like that for cycling-related pain. Gives you common diagnoses based on symptoms, and some exercises to do
-
Oooooh, whom do we talk to about this?!?!
-
Could just as easily do something like "this instrument is doing X, how do I make it stop?"
-
-
A4 Collect data and distribute feedback more rapidly. Assess student performance within context of an ensemble
-
Have some diagrams and repair videos embedded in the app. And a warning to just take it to the shop if it's an oboe.
-
Considering the number of Ts in the chat alone, it wouldn't be hard to make a few resource vids for rudimentary issues
-
A4: Want to get Ss self assessing more. Both for their benefit and mine.
-
I was thinking about this! iPads on the stand recording audio, then reflect on their individual performance
-
I'll be the "guy shrugging" in the double reed resource videos
-
A class I took recommended using a mixer to record multiple channels of Ss playing. Like the iPad/Chromebook idea!
-
-
I'll upload the "shrugging guy" video for the double Reed resource folder
-
Have it record video too so S can see what they need to improve on. There are coaching apps that will work
-
Love Screencastify for this! S sees music on screen, webcam in PIP. Can give feedback this way too!
-
Confused. Isn't on Tuesdays?
-
A4: Collaboration - receiving more immediate individualized feedback, preferably from students.
