A weekly half hour chat focused on improving access to education for PK-12 students through the use of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Assistive Technology (AT).
Hello and Welcome again! I am Rachel your chat host! My specialty is Primary AEM/AT & helping Ts navigate Ss with Emotional Needs through PATINS! My favorite app is Prizmo Go for Education and Amazon for me! :) #PatinsIcam
It is the best! Use the app to take a picture of the text, then run your finger over it and it speaks. Text looks just like the original. No internet connection required! #PatinsIcam
Howdy! Nick, sped director from Decatur County schools. My favorite app is ISS Spotter cause it makes the world seem a little smaller and kids love it. #PATINSIcam
It allows you to see when the International Space Station will be visible overhead. Its great to inspire future astronauts. Parents like doing it with their kids. #PATINSIcam
A2: all the things my Android phone can do... ha! But seriously, iPads (and any other adopted tech) may not be the best tool for all students, so if it's not, ditch it and pick a tool that works for that kid's needs! #PatinsIcam

A3: no, I am of the no instructions needed thought camp, I learn by trial and error. I need to learn to take it more step by step instructions though! #Patinsicam
A3: The voice over tour teaches you all of the multi-finger gestures. There are also game-type apps that help screen reader users practice all the gestures. #Ballyland#PatinsIcam
A3: I found the switch access has a lot of options that can be confusing at first! Don't be intimidated by any options or the peripheral switches/hooks that go with it, we'll walk you through them #PatinsIcam
A4: I love trying out new #AugComm apps, and @PATINSPROJECT will let you borrow apps and iPads for free for 6 weeks! And get you a specialist to train you in how to use it effectively, at no cost (what a bargain) #PatinsIcam
A3: Not specific to accessibility, but I learned of the iPad User Guide this past April and it houses lots of great info! https://t.co/laBYOaYla3 You can download it for free in iBooks too #PatinsIcam
A4: iPadPro with the large/split screen has been revolutionary for students with low vision. Finger swipe enlargement = SO MUCH INDEPENDENT ACCESS! #PatinsIcam
Q5: I think that it is great to be able to borrow and test it out because apps can start adding up after a while. That’s a great resource to try. I had a teacher today ask me to buy her a bunch of apps to try. #PATINSIcam
A5 Borrowing apps and devices with free shipping makes it possible for educators to try before they buy! It's like Christmas every time a box arrives! #patinsicam

A6: one way is finding that balance of function and size. Too small of an iPad limits the size of buttons & and amount on the page, too large and it becomes cumbersome #PatinsIcam

A6: BACK IT UP! nothing like seeing iPad that goes for a swim in the sensory pool to make you realize you didn't back up that communication file #PatinsIcam
A7: My mom was reading on her ipad one night and I asked if it hurt? HAHA After I showed her all of the settings for dimming and changing the contrast her mind was blown! #PatinsIcam
Q7: I think the lighting in the environment that the iPad is being used can make a difference too. Thinking about this goes great with the lighting changes on the iPad. #PATINSIcam
