A1: My resolution is to be great for kids. You can't go wrong if your heart is in the right place and you are trying to do what is best for kids. #ohedchat
Trying to design a graphic for designing connected learning experiences. As a teacher, I want to create the conditions for learning to thrive. I’m trying to simplify how I might do this. Would love thoughts? #dtk12chat#k12Artchat#ohedchat
A1: challenge myself to provide experiences that are meaningful, yet beneficial to the growth of my students. This will make me grow as well! #ohedchat
A2) starting my 2nd year...more time in the classrooms. Spend more time with staff that I didn't get to know last year... Keep expanding our classroom beyond the walls of the school to think globally and act locally.
#ohedchat
A1: My resolution is to make a positive difference for students and teachers, every day, whether in something big or small. I want everyone I work with to know they are important, and they matter. #ohedchat
A1: Be more open and be more positive. I'm trying have a more positive outlook with all of my classes this year. And I want to reach out and be more collaborative with my colleagues #ohedchat
A1 Relationship building in small ways every day w/ each Ss. I finally found a way to do a middle school lunch group 2X week, so that has been so fun. It's upstairs so I called it "Lunch in the Loft" #ohedchat
I've been trying to do that . . . today's lunch was eaten while driving from one meeting to another. Salad doesn't work so well then. Oh, well! #ohedchat
Also, I am a preservice T at Youngstown State University. I did this chat a few times last year when I was attending Grove City College, but I made the decision to transfer to YSU #ohedchat
Silly little thing, but today I held the door for a class of high school students as they came outside (early in the day) for an activity. I loved the surprised smiles on faces. Very fun! #ohedchat
I’m revamping how I’m doing reading this year...providing Ss with learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom (virtual field trips)...being more present for them. #ohedchat
I’m all about team building in the CR! You have to create a positive learning atmosphere conducive to learning! Stronger bonds = positive atmosphere = better learning! #ohedchat
My school gave every teacher some thank you cards that we can randomly hand out to other Ts to brighten their day. It’s truly the little things! #ohedchat
A2 All S's should feel a sense of reason to be there. It is important for T's to get S's to see the importance of being at school before the S's can learn. #ohedchat
Q2: All students should feel safe and valued enough to take the risks necessary to grow. Fourth grade is a tough year. I spend lots of time giving them unconditional positive regard so they feel comfortable taking risks. #ohedchat
A2: "... own their 20 square feet." All students need to realize that their actions have consequences & affect those around them. They need to take ownership of their 20 sq. ft. in order to make positive, impactful decisions about behavior @TBrianKight#ohedchat
A2: All students should feel honored, respected, valued, and safe. All students should feel welcomed into learning and supported in taking risks. #ohedchat
A2 Many great ideas and important notes, but any ideas on how we can make these ideas a reality, or better yet commonplace? I think the first major step is asking S's questions about themselves just to show that we care, also opening up about ourselves as people #ohedchat
I love when students have their own connections with the content that they can share and connect to the learning. Everyone offers a different perspective through their experiences #ohedchat
A1 school year resolution... to connect life and school more. School learning should not be isolated, compartmentalized. It should be fluid between home/school. I’m working on this. #ohedchat
Excellent point! Finding those "little" moments to make connections is so important. Even touching base with a student who was absent--just a simple, "I'm so glad you're back"--can be powerful. #ohedchat
We did icebreakers and games in speech class for the 1st 2 weeks: introduce a friend, this or that, Ask Me Anything, etc. The CR culture in there is the strongest I’ve had yet. It really does pay dividends far more than one would expect #Ohedchat
Welcome, Chris, and so glad you're jumping right in. Love it! Yes--I agree--all students should feel included. What are ways we can respectfully do that? I'm thinking of more introverted students--best ways to do that? #ohedchat
Start with inquiry approach to building your class culture- make yourself the facilitator & give Ss opportunity to ask Qs to guide their learning #Ohedchat
YES!! During a field last year the T asked a student why he was late, the S wasn't even in the T's homeroom but the T saw the tardy on attendance, S's face lit up, he felt cared about #ohedchat
Time spent building community at the beginning of the year is incredibly important. @Vroom6 has been a role model for me in how we can do this. #ohedchat
Q3: we want our teachers to form their classroom norms and expectations with the students. This way the students feel an ownership and can be held accountable because they agreed to them. I personally have tried to talk to as many people as I can. #ohedchat
A3: my school consists of 6-8 and we are all split up into family groups in order to build community. These groups meet once a month and serve as a support group for Ss to turn to w/ problems #ohedchat
A3. As a team changing staff meeting to staff check-ins with more team building component. Just trying to be visible and be around to talk with people, which is super easy when you legit already love the people you work with! #ohedchat
A3 creating inspiring advice quotes to promote creative thinking, risk taking, curiosity wonder. Talking about rules to break to be more creative. #ohedchat
A2: As a district level admin I am focusing on making sure all our staff feels safe, supported & listened too... so they can be free to make sure all their Ss are supported and confident as learners #Ohedchat
A3: I have Ps email me five facts about their child. I then read these aloud w/out using names/gender, and the class tries to guess who it is. Ss love it. Ss also take a quiz on me that lets them get to know me better. #ohedchathttps://t.co/q4IAEHHKvP
A3) it's hot. Really hot. I didn't sit in my air conditioned office, I sat in classrooms. Delivered popsicles. Put coolers of ice water in every hallway. We are all in this together.
#ohedchat
A3: tonight we had our Parent Night...it was great because I know their Ss better and I was able to share how we’ve grown as a community since the start of the year. Very positive experience! #ohedchat
A3 good question! I’m still (trying) to listen and learn. First year in the building and I’m trying to get the vibe. What do they need? What do they want? #ohedchat
A3: I am a TA, I work with every Ss in the bldg., I make sure to greet the Ss as they enter the bldg in the AM, I try to talk with my Ss when we are @ recess & lunch. Building relationships, making connections. #ohedchat
A3: As an association, we had a first day selfie challenge with a doughnut reward for staff. We also made bulletin boards with staff pics and it was a great morale booster! Want to make a "Sept Shout Outs" board. If teachers are happy, so are students. #OHedchat
A3: I allow older students to be in my classroom while I teach my 9th grade classes. It gives the older kids a place to go (especially those transitioning between H.S. and college classes during the day) & lets my freshmen see what it's like to be an upperclassman #ohedchat
We have high school "Houses" that meet weekly to do service projects and school spirit events. Our freshmen and new to JFK students take "The Kennedy Experience" which is a hands on study hall to lay the groundwork! #ohedchat
A3: Norms are important - they help create common ground and are effective when Ss not only help create them, but feel empowered to hold you and their classmates accountable to them. #Ohedchat
We have attributes at my school that we focus on and personal agency is a big one! Students need to learn accountability as it is a life skill #ohedchat
A3 I have not had much of a chance to build a community yet this year, but I start tutoring 2 4th graders tomorrow, so any advice would be appreciated #ohedchat
A3: My Ss and I developed our class rules together. It was a team effort. I do lots of listening and asking questions about educational aspects & family. It helps me build relationships and ensure I am doing all I can to support our students and staff. #ohedchat
A3: We greet students from outside our classroom doors as they arrive. On the first day, we did a “clap-in.” You could see the nerves ease when they saw our excitement! Also, for staff, we are starting a monthly Book Club for fun/hanging out outside of school! #ohedchat
A3: We have daily S meetings & keep reflecting upon what is everyone learning about you as you engage with others? Lots of reinforcement for making prosocial choices and being a proactive community member. Extrinsic leads to intrinsic with littles. Keep reinforcing! #OHedchat
Find out what they love to spend time doing, what they think they are “ awesome “ at... then work to connect what you are focusing on as a tutor to that. Asking how they like to learn is a good start too #Ohedchat
A3 It's hard w/ the beginning of year start up stress & extra activities, but I try to send a few positive emails to parents each day, because they need to know that we notice their child & all Ps love to hear something positive about their child & school! #ohedchat
I've used it with Ss. I opted for the paid subscription because I could save transcripts of the chat. (It was inexpensive.) Helped me in terms of observations. #ohedchat

A4: so far I had to figure out a new field trip to take this fall...I’m excited for the new experience that will be provided to our Ss! It’s been working out well in the planning and implementing of the trip! #ohedchat
That’s so great. I feel this is forgotten through all the chaos of the everyday teacher. I will try this, too! I’ll make a sticky note by my computer! #ohedchat
A4: Communicated with every parent and gotten input about their child, and gotten all forms signed & returned so far. Feels like a new record! #ohedchat
A4: I dedicated the first 3 days in my STEM 9 class to having a "Culture Intensive." We talked about the mindset & culture of our school & STEM program, one of counselors presented on personality, & the Ss developed their own culture value statements for the year #ohedchat
A4: Greeting Ss at the door and thanking them at the end of every class. Also, Ss doing self assessments with high five hands as they leave keeps them thinking about their involvement in the learning process. #ohedchathttps://t.co/q4IAEHHKvP
This is great; my coteacher and I had Ss address postcards on the first day, and have been sending them out w/ notes of gratitude and appreciation since. It takes so little time, but is appreciated greatly #ohedchat
A4 I haven't started any fields yet, but personally I have worked on expanding my PLN through twitter and I have continued some work on my online portfolio https://t.co/UainoQyLzG#ohedchat
A4) just one??!
Our Entrepreneurship class is FLOURISHING this year. Only 2 weeks in and multiple projects done! Business is booming at JFK!!
Check out my pinned tweet for our amazing video!!

A4: I dedicated the first 3 days in my STEM 9 class to having a "Culture Intensive." We talked about the mindset & culture of our school & STEM program, one of our counselors presented on personality, & the Ss developed their own culture value statements for the year #ohedchat
A4: I've really appreciated the collaboration in preparing plans for our gifted PD for the year. Principals from all our buildings shared ideas for how we can best address students' needs and support teachers' learning. #ohedchat
A4 oh! Im pretty proud of the google behavior form I made for myself. Will hold me accountable for reteaching not just disciplining, documentation, and communication #ohedchat
A4: We have created “Welcome to LU” write-ups on each new staff member to the district. These are then shared on several social media sites for the community to greet and know our new Lions! #ohedchat
A3 #ohedchat I hosted STEAM popups where we played games, built structures, let loose torrents of marbles and connected it all to computers and the mechanics of the universe.
Q4: Setting up a learning community, rather than a T directed classroom. Ss reflect on their participation/behavior based on how it affects the community, not the T. T is not the person they should aim to please all year. This generalizes through all environments. #ohedchat
A5: Establishing rhythms and a consistent weekly schedule. We’ve had multiple early releases/days off due to heat. Also specials schedules have changed a few times. We’re rolling with it and trying to live our mantra: “Do the Next Right Thing!” #ohedchat
A5) our head of maintenance retired. We planned a big assembly to say goodbye...and he inadvertently left for Handyman Hardware after I got all the kids in the gym 🤦♀️ It was a hot 20 min but worked out.
#ohedchat
A5: Technology. But of course, anyone with teaching experience knows to have a back up plan. No biggie but word of advice for new Ts: it happens all the time #ohedchat
Chad Miller, Jumping in late after levy mtg, A5: Due to budget cuts, I had to move our dean of students back into the classroom 1 day before open house due to increase in class sizes. #ohedchat I learned so much from her though and the way she handled it. @Shreve3309
A5: Other than the results of a physics lab the last couple of days 🙄, nothing much has went wrong so far! (and I really hope I just didn't jinx myself there!) #ohedchat
A5:got really excited about my department and then found out they all teach on the other side of the building. Collaborating has some constraints 😕#ohedchat
A5 (continued) I want to add that it’s good when things don’t go as planned. You learn through trail and error. Take risks, try new things. Learning is messy and never happens in a straight line. #ohedchat
A5: Really though, nothing major. The usual tech bugs, mice, and the building is hot...off to a great year. Just began implementing @TheLeaderinMe. #ohedchat
A5: Can't think of anything specific, but there is at least one thing each day. And if you can't laugh, you won't prevail. Laugh often- at yourself, at life. Great growth mindset example for Ss and other Ts. #OHedchat
A6: This school year I’m starting a book club after school for Ts who don’t leave the building right after school. And I’m growing my PLN (from St. Louis to Ohio)! #ChatCrasher#ohedchat
A6: look into new opportunities that will make my Ss be the best they can be! I will do whatever I can and need to to make that happen! Ss are my priority! #ohedchat
A6) I'm leading Genius Hour this year, after a late enrollment surge. I am getting to try out all the classroom stuff that has come out in the last 4 years I spent out of the classroom. Google classroom! Digital breakouts! Mystery Skype?? Who's to say!
#ohedchat
A6: I plan on doing a book study this year with my colleagues, I hope to get a Twitter chat organized for teachers w/in my district #GaleEdChat, and I want to always be here on Wednesday nights! #ohedchat
#ohedchat A6: Find balance. Spend more time focusing on the big rocks instead of the little stuff. I want to improve my feedback that I provide to tchrs.
A6: I want to become better at balance. Doing lots of reading by @BreneBrown, and I'm really looking at how whole-heartedness and vulnerability are important in my work as an educator. Planning to do lots of reading. #ohedchat
A6: Connect with older, wiser teachers. On here, and in my school/district. Also use resources and knowledge from the grad program I just started! Going to try to ask my assistants/grade-level team often, “What’s working? What’s not? What needs to change?” #ohedchat
Self reflection and evaluation after every lesson helps you make the necessary adjusts for next time and allows you on gauge where to go next! Great thoughts! #ohedchat
Thank you #ohedchat. Please join us next Wednesday at the same time as @TebnerEbner & @aaron_hogan explore Myths of Perfection. This should be a great chat.
