Great to have you back on Emily!
Q1: What experiences in your higher ed program developed your global competency? (ie assignments, speakers, service learning)
A1 I was changed from meeting international students at my college and getting to know them.

A1 We need more and stronger relationships between our domestic and international students.
Hi ! I'm kelley--hs ELA and leadership T from Rochester MI. Lighting their fires by Rafe Esquith

A1: Living in an international dorm in college. Great environment to start with!
Did you get to study abroad in your program?
Ken from Western Oregon Univ. Checking in late. Currently in DC for meetings. East coast time has my clock messed up
Hi Ken! Thanks for joining - I think this topic is perfect for you tonight, right?
Q2Different perspectives. My English classmates were surprised that we actually studied US history-- our history was so short☺
A2 People see the world differently; we need to work together-we grow when we learn about things outside of our own experience!
Q2. What did you learn through those experiences that helped you become more globally competent?
Through coursework for my MA & PhD. I didn't travel until I was a teacher. My Ss do these activites in my courses
International Scout camps and a career as a localisation Soft Test Engineer was my global education rather than teaching qual
Hey : you're missing a great chat! -->
Q2. What did you learn through those experiences that helped you become more globally competent?
A2: Culture/conflict are complex; Ts are reluctant to teach globally for many reasons; Teaching globally requires risk-taking
A1: May have learned more about US schooling/culture than I did of the countries I studied/visited...
A2: they helped me understand that my POV and truth isn't THE POV and THE truth, that there are others, and they matter, too
A2 Real friendships & bonds showed that we're all connected by a shared humanity
Jason, Alex Oberle was just speaking very highly of you today at Natl Geo alliance meeting I'm at
Ha! It took me a minute - you are referring to British classmates right? :)
A2: For me, I spent a lot of time with people from other cultures - so I learned a lot about cross-cultural communication!
A2: Lots and lots of travel showed the threads of similarities among the differences
A2: compassion. Awareness. That the world is so big and we are an important but very small part.
A2:People see actions of citizens & gov't as separate. Was in S. Korea & Japan during Iraq War & learned pov through convo
A2: Helping Ss understand the nature of their cultural lenses requires that we model this ourselves
It's overwhelming right? So many different cultures - how can one know them all? Focus on global skills might help?
Hello ! Precious here in VA… Sadly none of my college ed taught me anything Although that was 20 years ago!
A2 being provided diverse persp, especially minority/oppressed perspectives, learning GE terminology, prof dev opps
Listening to podcast on WWI in Africa, watching on mute & taking part in - catching up globally on speed!!
A2: I learned that there are a variety of diverse perspectives on most issues/current events (rarely covered by US media)
Hi Penny from Virginia. I'll be popping in and out this evening since my sister is moving in!!! fun fun!
Thanks for joining again Precious! I think things are changing slowly. But can speak to that!
A1 A2 No experience in hi ed. Got interested on my own.
Growing up in Air Force moving around the world got me hooked!
That seems simple, but it's actually a big lesson
A2: must include challenging binary ways of thinking about the world
I have tried to travel & learn on my own. I was fortunate 2B a global learning fellow-turning pt 4me
How many different countries did you live in?
Working on a blog but wanted to hop in for at least a couple questions! Love
Q3: What are the challenges of ensuring that teachers graduate from their training prepared to teach with a global focus?
Q3Teacher educators are so burdened with meeting accreditation, State and University requirements.
. Agreed! It enabled me to strengthen my empathy and listening muscles (which I know can appreciate)
A2b a key is having perspective challenged that leads to shifting paradigm, understanding can't define things as black/white
I didn't know you were a fellow! will be hosted by them on March 10 :)
So true!! https://t.co/R4CWhVDYR7
A2: they helped me understand that my POV and truth isn't THE POV and THE truth, that there are others, and they matter, too
It sort of recurs over and over again each time a new POV is introduced
A3 New rigorous standards to meet, which reduces efforts toward global. We need to integrate global into what's required .
Q3: What are the challenges of ensuring that teachers graduate from their training prepared to teach with a global focus?
A3. Most prep programs do not strategically & systemically address integrating global as a top priority.
Explored on my own & thru the Global Fellowship last yr. That stepped up my “game”!
A3: Time: there are many competing priorities in their schedules. That’s why we must integrate thru-out teacher prep
A3: if teacher prep programs aren't interested or able to incorporate global perspective/insights, Ts may not be equipped
Yes! 2015!! That is how I had the opportunity to travel to Peru!! Best learning experience ever-
A3: With everything else being pushed (CCSS, testing, etc), how to bring global competencies to the forefront?
Great point, I think time plays a huge role and we often force teachers to pick what matters most.
A3:edTPA, Coop teachers who value global competence, pre-service Ts w/ tech skills & willingness to move beyond US history
A3 The"globe" is a big concept. Ts have to guide Ss w/ the right, probing questions
. It does, in many circumstances, with all types of ppl. It isn't necessarily a "global" thing. It's a human thing
Agreed These put a big damper on for a lot of teachers who can't see alignment
https://t.co/FfZdVG72Ri
A3 New rigorous standards to meet, which reduces efforts toward global. We need to integrate global into what's required .
A3 Univ focus on accreditation. Ss lack of travel, exposure to media lit 2 help decipher "noise" often leading 2 misconceptions
Change the “culture” of pre-service prep! We need 2 increase understanding of imp of https://t.co/li51eXOa0N
Q3: What are the challenges of ensuring that teachers graduate from their training prepared to teach with a global focus?
We lost a lot of ground w/ recession . Global was "cool" when it meant Americans overseas. Less so now https://t.co/VVuD0cnfEx
A3: With everything else being pushed (CCSS, testing, etc), how to bring global competencies to the forefront?
A3: global perspective is so personal...hard to assume Ts needs and shortcomings
Yes! EdTPA!! How could I forget that becoming a challenge for
That makes sense - we see, often, in this way that a person accesses a whole new experience of being human
A3 universities are not doing enough to prepare PS T 4 a diverse grp of Ss. There is still division in our country
North Carolina is always ahead of the pack!
A3: Ts need to be willing enough to let new and challenging facts and ideas change them. Otherwise, preparedness is unlikely
Q4Incorporate global learning outcomes into curriculum and find content and pedagogy to help candidates meet those outcomes.
Tell us more about that, Tim. Do you really think so?
Q4: How can pre-service education better prepare teachers to teach global content? What experiences do they need to have?
A3: Intra-personal aspects of global competence require self-reflection - time constraints & comfort zones can be challenges
A3: My next mission = to convince my local dean of ed program to offer course(s) in global pedagogy
Yes! Huge issue! There is more talk about this now though - that is at least a step in the right direction.
Q4: How can pre-service education better prepare teachers to teach global content? What experiences do they need to have?
A4: How great would it be if every pre-service teacher studied abroad?
A4 early expsure to global ideas in teacher prep program, courses that make global/local connections, global in subject areas -
Great mission - keep us updated and then write another blog post on it :)
A4 Ss need to be put in situations that lead to Ss having paradigm shift in thought & expierence w/ “other” being humanized
Yes. Nailed it. What a concept.
A4 After traveling w/other Ts to Peru I strongly believe we need to offer PS Ts opprtnty 2 travel abroad. The world is big !
A4 Ts need true, strong relationships with others different from themselves.
Yes - and in doing so, take risks and then allow students to take risks in the same way.
A4: complexity w/in multiple perspectives, competence skills & fostering thinking differently about how they imagine the world
A4: Programs need to utilize knowledge/expertise of practitioners and developers of and
so much research out there that lends this to being the best way to develop global perspectives in Ts
A4 Teachers need empathy to understand the "other" before they can teach their students about our shared world
Agreed! And veteran Ts too. Seeing the world's children and systems makes us stronger Ts! https://t.co/nsqv9Z80a3
A4 After traveling w/other Ts to Peru I strongly believe we need to offer PS Ts opprtnty 2 travel abroad. The world is big !
Q4Candidates and teacher educators need experience including global learning outcomes in lessons.
Absolutely!! I think if we are to get past racism-we must make a priority in Ed https://t.co/4lRDlmyaAw
Yes! Huge issue! There is more talk about this now though - that is at least a step in the right direction.
Q4Candidates and teacher educators need experiences socializing and learning with people from other cultures and backgrounds.
A4: also developing in global partnerships w/ PK-12 enviros overseas & higher ed to facilitate preservice Ts getting opps
It really is a perspective shift to experience a place as a foreigner - discovering & exploring something new
A4 uni programs could include more of a world understanding thread?
A4: ensure that their edu exp embraces that we are all part of a global fabric, think John Donne: https://t.co/uL6NlEkUEc
Together would be an awesome connection. Co-teaching across continents! https://t.co/RPmCSdRtvh
Agreed! And veteran Ts too. Seeing the world's children and systems makes us stronger Ts! https://t.co/nsqv9Z80a3
A4 After traveling w/other Ts to Peru I strongly believe we need to offer PS Ts opprtnty 2 travel abroad. The world is big !
I am NOT surprised. Real connections & understanding must be experienced. Textbooks can’t make U feel https://t.co/FO0sla4vEM
so much research out there that lends this to being the best way to develop global perspectives in Ts
Yes - you gain so many global skills and so many ideas for how to integrate those into your classroom.
Q4Field experiences at home, abroad, and virtual.
. Absolutely. Systems that stifle exploration and agency stifle the pursuit of our full humanity
Veteran Ts need it more in some ways… we can be set in our ways of thinking… https://t.co/cEfyZrYYde
Agreed! And veteran Ts too. Seeing the world's children and systems makes us stronger Ts! https://t.co/nsqv9Z80a3
A4 After traveling w/other Ts to Peru I strongly believe we need to offer PS Ts opprtnty 2 travel abroad. The world is big !
A4: Throwing it out to the universe: Teaching/developing pre-service courses is one of my future career-dreams!
Q4: Definitely foreign lang. All would benefit by learning a lang, esp a non-traditional one; Ts can get out of comfort zones.
Q4 A curveball ofa comment - should teachers be multilingual ?
Absolutely - It's visceral learning/knowledge/skill set
Q5: How do we engage students from other countries to improve education in the U.S.?
Q5Conversation partners. Co-teach on-line or in person. Guest speakers.
A4:Review texts we use (authors) & what we ask STs to prepare lessons & projects on to build content, concepts, & resources
Teacher definitely should be multilingual!
Argument can be made global competence is most critical skill Ss need for career in interconnected world.
At least have exposure to a second language, don't you think? Even if they aren't fluent?
I'm not for a mandate, but it likely would improve the connection and relations between teachers and students
Very interesting question! Came up in a different conversation recently about changing student demographics.
Multilingual teachers would be ideal given the incredible increase in bilingual students!
A5 Virtual meetings; sharing projects via course management shells; connecting with international students on campus.
Q5: How do we engage students from other countries to improve education in the U.S.?
Great idea but some of us w/processing issues are can’t speak another lang- at least not well Should B required 4 Ss
A5 Tons of ways now using tech! My own org has over 40 collab. student projects going on at a time, several global
Q4: How about a curiosity meter? Ts uninterested in other places/ people will be hard-pressed to expand thinking globally.:-)
A5: Invite them into our classrooms - have them share their stories or their languages.
Then there's Julie work and Lucy Gray...Global Nomads Group...and on and on
A5 Partnering w/ them for projects on social media. Finding ways to humanize them & let our Ss engage & hear the "other"voices
A5:ePals, iEARN, reach out to colleagues abroad to partner. Connect w/Int'l Programs on campus & community
A5: We listen to and include them. We work with them to identify opp's for improvement and alterations to the existing system.
A5 Interesting thought-Peruvian Ss knew A LOT … what do American Ss know ?
A5: technology is really opening up new means for students to connect and learn from each other.
How do we get more teacher educators to do this? https://t.co/3osKH4ibbg
A4:Review texts we use (authors) & what we ask STs to prepare lessons & projects on to build content, concepts, & resources
Ts should def understand what it's like to learn a language and the processes.
A5: Virtual exchange programs would be amazing.
LOVE Google Hangout! Has brought PERU & learning to my classroom! https://t.co/C3Q85T5CIN
A5: technology is really opening up new means for students to connect and learn from each other.
A5 Partner US & Intl Ss together on a impact project. We share 1 world, we can on projects
A4 Encourage service learning/other experiences interacting w/ ppl from another culture. Good prep for classroom diversity
Definitely agree w/you there! I picked up more lang being in Peru than from my online lessons. https://t.co/RM8qcCFSca
Ts should def understand what it's like to learn a language and the processes.
"talk shop" in a webinar & Zoom, the Global Ed Conf for in person, opp to meet & exchange ideas beyond research
A5: The same way we should engage students from this country: ask them! Authorize them to generate and implement innovations!
Global Ed Conf?? Tell me more!
great point, giving students the power to shape their own education helps students everywhere.
Student-driven, research-based, and projects that span a range of sizes.
Well, sponsors the online one. has an annual in-person conference
Speaking of global ed conf. There's the Global Summitt on Childhood (in Costa Rica) next month https://t.co/WVZgwrgeJ9
Q6Partnerships with IB schools for field experiences. With education service centers that provide PD to teachers.
Q6: What partnerships have you made in your community that advance global thinking in your program?
. No question about it. The way adults thrive when they own their work is true for youth, too. This stuff is human.
Q6: What partnerships have you made in your community that advance global thinking in your program?
A6 Strong district and school student teacher placements w/teachers who model global thinking in the classroom are key!
A6: We partner with libraries, community-based after school programs, adult literacy programs, to name a few.
A4: I think students drive that meter more and more. Wired kids are connected
https://t.co/1IqAB9nPF2
Q4: How about a curiosity meter? Ts uninterested in other places/ people will be hard-pressed to expand thinking globally.:-)
Would love to go to attend!! When and where?
A3: Many challenges, but MORE benefits! I wish they would restructure how funds are allotted to allow for more experiences
OMG! How have I been missing this?
Our conference is probably not happening until winter 2017 - still TBD.
A4: Need experiences and to learn about their own perceptions. Read what some Ss said in blogs https://t.co/tePQpMkQfY
A6 co-coordinate Center for Geo Ed in OR which takes Ts & pre-serv Ts overseas every summer. Also partner w/ Gaza T for Skype
A6: Cannot say enough how essential our local clubs were helping us w/ our connection & helped w/ travel
keep us updated, please!!
A5 Ihave been using this yr to introduce Ss to other Ss =success
A6: Cross-departmental relationships and events. Inter. studies offices have so man connections that help teacher programs
I need to focus & grow here. I am doing a lot of lsns connecting w/global ed. Goal 4 next yr is to build..
A6 Scouts groups, soccer teams have great opportunities for global exchanges
The online conference by is fantastic too! That's in November.
A6: Our community completely funded our Academic WorldQuest geopolitics team. Our local beer festival was our main sponsor
Is it during the school day? I have so little time during the instructional day for learning. https://t.co/xO8zIKW7BD
I need to focus & grow here. I am doing a lot of lsns connecting w/global ed. Goal 4 next yr is to build..
A5: LOVE idea someone mentioned re: leveraging int'l students on campus. Has anyone found meaningful, authentic ways to do so?
That's a great idea - a great basis for connection
That is thinking outside the box! Approach your local brewery - they are probably global :)
Q7: How are you preparing teachers or student teachers in your school to make connections to global in your local community?
Q7Field experiences in schools serving immigrant students.
Excellent! is a wonderful sponsor of via ! https://t.co/oKg0nmFswe
A6: Cannot say enough how essential our local clubs were helping us w/ our connection & helped w/ travel
OH>>> that is awesome!!!!! Does it have a cost to participate?
How do you create F2F exchange opps for undocumented Ss? Where is their equity?
We have asked international students to teach us about their educational systems.
Meaningful & authentic might be key here - do you have thoughts on what that might look like?
Q7: How are you preparing teachers or student teachers in your school to make connections to global in your local community?
A7 we are partnering with to offer Global Ed. classes for Ts in the states. Based on her new book
No cost! TONS of ideas and opps.
I believe it's free! She also has one on global leadership coming up in April.
A7 We require a semester of community-based service for teacher cert candidates linking students w/local diasporic communities
A7 Travel opps thru state geo alliance. Connections thru cross-cult social media partnerships,
Someone mentioned a program that does this in last week's
A7:1st step is to help them see how truly global most local communities are - persons, products, etc https://t.co/eZf0pnjy2k
Q7: How are you preparing teachers or student teachers in your school to make connections to global in your local community?
That is so awesome! I can’t wait to participate! Would love more info @ the one in April. https://t.co/KlG5Q9H2k5
I believe it's free! She also has one on global leadership coming up in April.
A7: 2nd step is to help them see that global problems are local, not far away or global in scale
Aw thanks for being a fan - and writing for the blog :)
A7: 3rd step is to empower students to solve those problems locally using the attributes, knowledge, skills (ASKs) you teach
Thank you so much for joining tonight! And thank you to and for their support & for writing great ?s!
I working on a blog now for Edweek on Unions but then have another in April imp! Can we chat soon?
