  • CoachDiG Jan 30 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: strategic. Get it thought out. See what they give you. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • NickyT4098 Jan 30 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I try not to be emotional when bringing pressure but sometimes it does happen lol big fan of situation and what hash the ball is on #swarmfbchat
  • coachdober Jan 30 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: try to be as strategic as possible. We gameplan down/distance/personnel groupings and what pressures we want to call in each situation. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachOburros Jan 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
    Scott Olsen HC Hillsboro,ND #swarmfbchat

A1: if I did it based on emotion I’d call it every single time a team got a first down or a gain of 10+. I like it based on D&D/ Field/ perceived weakness I’ve found. #Strategic #SwarmFbChat
  • wilson2882 Jan 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: strategic - use the numbers of our breakdowns and work on those calls all week. Go in with an Analytical plan. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachPierskalla Jan 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: I’ll call it “strategic feel” cuz it’s what I feel worked best from the week of practice or things that are installed that we haven’t shown #swarmfbchat
  • Coach__French Jan 30 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1;I am a strategically-emotional boundary pressure caller. We blitzed on 98% of our snaps last year #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • jhackett14 Jan 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
Strategic I feel like. Sometimes emotional especially when are getting our teeth kicked in #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_JGill Jan 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
I think both have a place. Strategic in preparation but in-game I believe you must include feel. If opponent isn't "on-script" you must adapt. However, not a fan of reactionary blitzing because you're unhappy w/ a specific play result. IMO that's panic. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • RoyCash66 Jan 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: try to be thorough in film study. Base it on field zone and personnel if possible. However, every now and then you get in the heat of the moment and bring the 🏡. But, I like to have a when and where not just a what. #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Jan 30 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1 cont: But I would be lying if I said there wasn’t some emotional blitzes involved. But I’ve found when I play with fire I get burned #swarmfbchat
  • coachjsam Jan 30 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: strategic based off on the gameplan and breakdowns. Can go off feel when needed #swarmfbchat
  • mikestauffer Jan 30 @ 9:12 PM EST
A1: In the past, I was a bend/don't break caller. Blitzes were by feel, if theyre not attacking a certain area, I'd blitz from that that area. I subscribed to the Harry Welsh defensive philosophy. #swarmfbchat
  • jhackett14 Jan 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1 cont: I like to come from everywhere #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1) Yes, it is usually situationally based, but I never go against my gut. I am a feel guy, but over time have learned to make notes about "stay aggressive" throw change ups, I usually write them on the special teams sheet. I don't carry a d call sheet. #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Jan 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1: Strategic. Like to bring pressure many times because it can get my studs in the front one on one opportunities. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachCCase Jan 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1: Having only called plays for Freshmen & JV games the past couple of years, I try to have some fun with the kids and be more aggressive than we would be on Friday's. #swarmfbchat
  • Tpeck2 Jan 30 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1) Emotional with some thought I base on feel... A blitz to me is a surgical strike to the confidence of a OL and ball handler... so I want to inflict the most pain possible #swarmfbchat
  • godalwayzfam1st Jan 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
GREAT answer! I believe that would put us in the 'feel' category! At times it's about sending a message. At times it's about strategy and what we feel will get home. At times it's about needing a spark! More situational than anything, but has alot to do w/ strategy. #Swarmfbchat
  • CoachGinn Jan 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1: Strategic, based on Down & Distance, and Field/Boundary Tendency, unless we aren’t stopping them then it just gets emotional #swarmfbchat
  • CometBacker2011 Jan 30 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1 Strategic but throw an emotional few throughout the game #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
Q2: What DL pressures are your favorite? Long stick? Twists with LBers? What is a good/solid coaching point for DL tech with stunting? #swarmfbchat
  • CoachTaddeo Jan 30 @ 9:18 PM EST
A1: strategic. Based on D&D tendencies and formational tendencies. Also what has previously worked #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_Palladino Jan 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A1: strategic is your what you worked on during the week and why you did it. Have to feel though.. so much of game changes in momentum you have to have a feel for what’s going on. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachOburros Jan 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A1 definitely emotional, big play or a quick change = double A gap coming your way!! #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Jan 30 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: I don’t like stunting with my DL too much. A slant here or there but rarely. I think it confuses LB’s for gap exchange. If anything it will be a “gap” alignment or something of that nature. #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:17 PM EST

  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2)We don't stunt, but our LBs can gap exchange with any lineman. I can also tag the blitz to tell them to swap gaps. We are a TGOG line, so our movement comes from our rules. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachPierskalla Jan 30 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2: I like whatever my guys are good at! Each year is different! Good coaching points: give them landmarks (ie. hip of OL, and only a yard or two deep) #swarmfbchat
  • coachjsam Jan 30 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2: depends on what we are trying to take away. Will change week by week #swarmfbchat
  • CoachCCase Jan 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: A gap twist with Nose & Tackle, Nose & Tackle cross from A to B & visa-versa with ILB twists to both. #swarmfbchat
  • jhackett14 Jan 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: I love twisting ends and tackles. Tackles and ends. #swarmfbchat
  • coachdober Jan 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
I agree. We use primarily slants. Try hard not to distort the gaps and run fits for the LBs #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @JRGrayson
  • Coach__French Jan 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
A2: love moving the defensive line via 1 gap or long stick and blitzing my speed right behind the move. Also love walking the ILBs up over the guards and twisting with the 0tech Y'all want some pressures from anywhere hit me up #Swarmfbchat @rmacblue
  • Coach_JGill Jan 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
If we are just sending the front 4 we will try to twist em/overload the protection. In that case we are probably trying to pick on their worst guy. We will long stick. We will add backer. Twist with DL & LB in every way. DL must continue play tech while on the move. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • NickyT4098 Jan 30 @ 9:21 PM EST
Love our "pick" package. Screen an offensive lineman with one and the "looper" using that as a pick. Ideally the "picker" should be he one making the most pressure after delivering the pick.Stole this from Coach Pees, former DC for the Ravens and now with the Titans #swarmfbchat

  • Joebruneel Jan 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
A2: I like to rush my Will off the edge to the open side. If I get a tackle that gives a big kick set and opens up B gap, I'll call an exchange with the DT and Will to get the Will into B gap and the DT would set the edge. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachTaddeo Jan 30 @ 9:22 PM EST
A2: big fan of long stick. We usually blitz LB’s behind it and they come free. Great way to freeze OL. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachDuda Jan 30 @ 9:23 PM EST
A1: Strategic. We play heavy percentages based on scouting & tendencies. Also need to be flexible as a lot can change in the game. #swarmfbchat
  • mikestauffer Jan 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: Ends & DT. Sometimes the DE and 3 tech would switch places and we'd twist them. #swarmfbchat
  • Tpeck2 Jan 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
Yeah I dont stunt much beyond exchanges with LBs or $ When I did, it was for a MS, ans my ruke was fat guy goes first... #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
Q2: What DL pressures are your favorite? Long stick? Twists with LBers? What is a good/solid coaching point for DL tech with stunting? #swarmfbchat
  • RoyCash66 Jan 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2: I like 2. I like a NUT NT and DT switching A gaps. I also like bringing a DE in the B gap and having the DT flatten to the C to contain. 1) quicker man goes first. 2) drop step and get flat. 3) Rip/swim to your new gap. #swarmfbchat
  • BallCoachMiller Jan 30 @ 9:24 PM EST
Ravens staff guys were talking about that at the 2016 Michigan Clinic...really cool stuff! #SwarmFBChat

  • CoachDuda Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
Torch Stunt (Passing Down). 5 tech & 3 tech. 3’s aiming point is hip of OT. Wide step w/rip to become a contain player. 5 tech takes 2 hard steps up the field to sell Pass Rush & dips inside to 1st open gap & penetrates! #swarmfbchat
  • CoachCCase Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
A2 cont: Also love twisting DEs inside to B gap and sending LB looping around through C gap. #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
We have stunts, I just never get to the point were I want to put in the work, ToN NuT, ExiT, TeX, NeRd, RuN... #swarmfbchat
  • CoachGinn Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
A2: Love to Longstick the 4i’s & bring LB behind it to take advantage of BOB protection, trybto determine pass protections & take advantage of it however possible #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_ChrisMoss Jan 30 @ 9:28 PM EST
A2: we put in a bear look late in the season where our best player was a stand up nose and could twist him with tackles to attack weaknesses in pass pro #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_Palladino Jan 30 @ 9:28 PM EST
A2: Love twisting up front and LB cross blitzes. Teach our DL to clear hands on the move. #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Jan 30 @ 9:28 PM EST
That’s bananas. I have way too much ADD to not have SOMETHING in my hand. I may not even use it but at least it’s there. Safety blanket more than anything. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @CODY_GARDNER, @Coach_SWilliams
  • Coach_SWilliams Jan 30 @ 9:29 PM EST
A2: Being undersized, we love to longstick with DE and bring backers right behind it! Our coaching point is “be tight enough to steal the DE’s wallet” while focusing on gap exchange and making ourselves “skinny” so the backers hit in the designed gap! #SwarmFBChat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachDuda Jan 30 @ 9:29 PM EST
A2 (continued). Rules for Torch Stunt. If 5 tech’s initial read is Reach Block, he punches OT’s outside shoulder & sheds block. He’s still a contain player. 3 tech still takes a wide path in B Gap. #swarmfbchat
  • NickyT4098 Jan 30 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3: Favorite is double A gap pressure from 2 LBs! #swarmfbchat
  • coachdober Jan 30 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3: varying looks is key. Inexperienced guys are so worried about stance, responsibility, etc. Once they have some confidence, I like them to walk down, show pressure when not coming, come from depth, walk down and go, etc. try to stay out of patterns #swarmfbchat
  • CoachCCase Jan 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: Prefer showing early, so later I can play games by showing and backing off at snap, especially against check-with-me teams. #swarmfbchat
  • godalwayzfam1st Jan 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
A2: Moved (Pinch/Out/Slant) our DTs often this year based on 'O' tendency & need! Gave us a chance & our LBs made us right most of the time! Not too many DL/LB combo pressures. LOVE the 1-2yd deep, thru OL hip tech! #Swarmfbchat https://t.co/arMCjUH2KJ
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:17 PM EST
Q2: What DL pressures are your favorite? Long stick? Twists with LBers? What is a good/solid coaching point for DL tech with stunting? #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_JGill Jan 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
Depends on scheme/design of pressure and coverage behind it. Backers may read out based on O look. Showing/delaying both have merit. Favorite route is one that gets the QB on his back. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • Coach__French Jan 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: Sugar, Show, come from depth. It's all good. Depends on the player and opponent. Love A and B gap. If you have a dog DL that the offensive line is worried about blitz near him to force 1on1s. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachPierskalla Jan 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: from our 3-3, we want to blitz from depth... from our other looks we want to show more blitz looks and give illusion of who is coming... #swarmfbchat
  • coachdober Jan 30 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: We also like to mix up whether inside or outside backer adds on as our 4th rusher (3-4) and how he gets there. #swarmfbchat
  • BallCoachMiller Jan 30 @ 9:31 PM EST
A3: Always felt you have to do all 3-show early, blitz from depth, and delay. Jokers can be just as good as actual blitzes when you get a HS OL kid to be hesitant and overthink. #SwarmFBChat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Jan 30 @ 9:31 PM EST
A3: important to do both. Because if you never show early then they’ll know you’re bluffing when you are. Prefer inside pressure. Outside pressure leads to big plays if they get to the edge. #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 30 @ 9:27 PM EST
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
  • Joebruneel Jan 30 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3: I don't like to show. If my LB can get a good read to jump the snap then use it, and time it up, but if not, I like my LB's to line up and make it look like any other play. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachjsam Jan 30 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3: yes you have to keep it simple & teach them how it fits in the entire scheme #swarmfbchat
  • CoachDuda Jan 30 @ 9:32 PM EST
A2: Love playing games upfront with my DL; especially if their smaller & quick. All the gaps are still occupied, just new responsibilities. Scouting & Film review play a huge role in what areas of the OL you can isolate with movements. #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:33 PM EST
A3) We do work moves and hand fighting. I tell them if they want another blitz they need to get home. Have to show and go, so we can bluff. Like to come from depth when gap exchanging. Showing and bailing has been good to us. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachGinn Jan 30 @ 9:33 PM EST
A3: we’re odd stack so we teach single LB blitzes, progress to double LB calls. How we call in games depends on situations/feel during game #swarmfbchat
  • RoyCash66 Jan 30 @ 9:33 PM EST
A3). Inside pressure. We try to force everything to our ✴️ & rover. Like gap exchange blitzes with lb’s and dt’s. Come late so ol can’t change protection. MHO. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachGinn Jan 30 @ 9:35 PM EST
A3: like to sometimes sugar a stunt to get OL to slide & bring stunt from other side from depth #swarmfbchat
  • mikestauffer Jan 30 @ 9:35 PM EST
    Here’s a D call sheet I used recently lol #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @CODY_GARDNER, @Coach_SWilliams

A3: depends on team/ what you guys do best and blocking scheme #swarmfbchat
  • CoachTaddeo Jan 30 @ 9:35 PM EST
A3: we stem as much as possible so its unpredictable. We blitz mostly inside. Cross blitz out of odd front like Pittsburgh and Alabama run #swarmfbchat
  • godalwayzfam1st Jan 30 @ 9:36 PM EST
A3: Again, feel/strategy/situation, depending on ball placement/part of field! If we have a guy they can't block... HE'S COMING! If you have a 2nd down tendency, and a weak guard... HE'S COMING! If a boundary attack on a pass down speeds QB clock... HE'S COMING! #Swarmfbchat

I carry a laminated card w/ a dry erase marker & permanent one. If I call something god awful, I cover it w/ my permanent maker as to not revisit it. I’ll write tendency’s off 1st and 3rd down w/ the dry erase or match coverages/ fronts that we think will work. #swarmfbchat

Q3. LB’s need to know if it is a “run” blitz or “pass” blitz depending on D&D. They need to know the objectively the blitz instead of running upfield like a crazy person. #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:40 PM EST
For specials I carried a "third hand" its like a beefy zip lock that connects to a lanyard. No lamination needed. #swarmfbchat

  • CoachGinn Jan 30 @ 9:40 PM EST
A4: used to roll a lot of cover 3, honestly we don’t blitz secondary guys since we went to true Split field Coverages, they help us more in coverage in my opinion #swarmfbchat

A4: it all depends on gameplan on both questions #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:42 PM EST

  • Coach__French Jan 30 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4: But if you wanna blitz your safety and you have a defensive end that can drop Hot to 2 ........#swarmfbchat
  • JRGrayson Jan 30 @ 9:42 PM EST
A4: I’ve never blitzed from the secondary... but I saw it can be effective this year from a colleague. He did a really good job of blitzing an animal safety he had. Might be a new wrinkle this year #swarmfbchat

  • coachdober Jan 30 @ 9:42 PM EST
Same. We do a lot split field. Those guys are more valuable in coverage and I can bring whatever pressure I need with the front 7. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @CoachGinn
  • Coach_JGill Jan 30 @ 9:43 PM EST
Every man is a potential blitzer. Will blitz from anywhere. Coverage varies. Zero, 1, Trap, Fire Zone, "Hot", etc. Coverage is flexible in relation to O personnel, formation, splits. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • RoyCash66 Jan 30 @ 9:43 PM EST
A4). Like to bring secondary pressure from the boundary, especially to a single. Still have lb help on the slant/ back out and you are less likely to get out leveraged on the edge on that side. #swarmfbchat

A4: rarely, they make their pay covering people. I do like bringing the corner against a flex bone that runs the rocket sweep if we have a tendency on it. When we were a 3-4 we had a few blitzes with our SS that served us well. #swarmfbchat

A4: blitz replace with SS and usually blitz from boundry with secondary. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachCCase Jan 30 @ 9:45 PM EST
A4: We currently have a system where all of secondary blitzes are connected to a certain coverage call. There's almost no thinking involved. #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_SWilliams Jan 30 @ 9:45 PM EST
A4: We will blitz the boundary corner with a rolling safety over top and a OLB underneath. We also blitz the Spur from the field and roll into a cloud coverage with a hard Corner. #swarmfbchat

A3 (addition): I agree, outside pressure can lead to bug plays... but what if you teach edge pressure guys to blitz thru their key. If they are the edge/spill guy and their key is coming at them... PEEL or COLLISION w/ leverage! Takes discipline, but can be done! #Swarmfbchat

A4: we do have a Boundary Corner Fire, we’ll play 1/4s over the top with Safety & sink LB to Curl/Flat that way #swarmfbchat

Q5: Do you consciously focus on multiple pressures per week or stay with the same number from game to game as you prepare? Are you looking for OL weakness or scheme holes? #swarmfbchat
  • CoachCCase Jan 30 @ 9:47 PM EST
A4 cont: I'd plan my blitzes around where the QB puts the ball least to vacate a low percentage zone. If a QB doesn't throw to away side flats, then that's where I'm bringing pressure in throwing situations. #swarmfbchat

A5: we definitely look for protection weaknesses and matchups to attack. My mindset is that we go into each season with our most basic pressures installed. Then from there, we add to our arsenal week to week based on our strengths and opponent weaknesses #swarmfbchat
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 30 @ 9:49 PM EST

  • Coach_Palladino Jan 30 @ 9:51 PM EST

Haha... I know it! It's all risk reward! I don't think we blitzed both ILBs outside the red zone ONCE. Tried to stay sound. Our edge guys though, lived and died by the "DON'T GET FIRED" rule! #Swarmfbchat

Have our base but will add/tweak weekly. Looking for any tendency or scheme that gives us an advantage. One rule we follow is "We won't install it if we won't call it." Plenty of exotics out there installed but never ran. We won't waste reps on stuff we won't call. #swarmfbchat
