Good evening, coaches. Welcome to the Tuesday Night #swarmfbchat Tonight's topic: Pressures from all position groups. Let's begin with intros. Be sure to include our hashtag in all tweets!
Be sure to follow someone new tonight! Tweet, like, and retweet as much as you want. Follow up with coaches as well if you have questions. Q1/A1 format will be used #swarmfbchat
A1: try to be as strategic as possible. We gameplan down/distance/personnel groupings and what pressures we want to call in each situation. #swarmfbchat
A1: if I did it based on emotion I’d call it every single time a team got a first down or a gain of 10+. I like it based on D&D/ Field/ perceived weakness I’ve found. #Strategic#SwarmFbChat
A1: I’ll call it “strategic feel” cuz it’s what I feel worked best from the week of practice or things that are installed that we haven’t shown #swarmfbchat
I think both have a place. Strategic in preparation but in-game I believe you must include feel. If opponent isn't "on-script" you must adapt. However, not a fan of reactionary blitzing because you're unhappy w/ a specific play result. IMO that's panic. #swarmfbchat
A1: try to be thorough in film study. Base it on field zone and personnel if possible. However, every now and then you get in the heat of the moment and bring the 🏡. But, I like to have a when and where not just a what. #swarmfbchat
A1: In the past, I was a bend/don't break caller. Blitzes were by feel, if theyre not attacking a certain area, I'd blitz from that that area. I subscribed to the Harry Welsh defensive philosophy. #swarmfbchat
A1) Yes, it is usually situationally based, but I never go against my gut. I am a feel guy, but over time have learned to make notes about "stay aggressive" throw change ups, I usually write them on the special teams sheet. I don't carry a d call sheet. #swarmfbchat
A1: Having only called plays for Freshmen & JV games the past couple of years, I try to have some fun with the kids and be more aggressive than we would be on Friday's. #swarmfbchat
A1) Emotional with some thought
I base on feel...
A blitz to me is a surgical strike to the confidence of a OL and ball handler... so I want to inflict the most pain possible
#swarmfbchat
GREAT answer! I believe that would put us in the 'feel' category! At times it's about sending a message. At times it's about strategy and what we feel will get home. At times it's about needing a spark! More situational than anything, but has alot to do w/ strategy. #Swarmfbchat
A1: strategic is your what you worked on during the week and why you did it. Have to feel though.. so much of game changes in momentum you have to have a feel for what’s going on. #swarmfbchat
A2: I don’t like stunting with my DL too much. A slant here or there but rarely. I think it confuses LB’s for gap exchange. If anything it will be a “gap” alignment or something of that nature. #swarmfbchat
A2)We don't stunt, but our LBs can gap exchange with any lineman. I can also tag the blitz to tell them to swap gaps. We are a TGOG line, so our movement comes from our rules. #swarmfbchat
A2: I like whatever my guys are good at! Each year is different! Good coaching points: give them landmarks (ie. hip of OL, and only a yard or two deep) #swarmfbchat
A2: love moving the defensive line via 1 gap or long stick and blitzing my speed right behind the move. Also love walking the ILBs up over the guards and twisting with the 0tech
Y'all want some pressures from anywhere hit me up
#Swarmfbchat@rmacblue
If we are just sending the front 4 we will try to twist em/overload the protection. In that case we are probably trying to pick on their worst guy. We will long stick. We will add backer. Twist with DL & LB in every way. DL must continue play tech while on the move. #swarmfbchat
Love our "pick" package. Screen an offensive lineman with one and the "looper" using that as a pick. Ideally the "picker" should be he one making the most pressure after delivering the pick.Stole this from Coach Pees, former DC for the Ravens and now with the Titans #swarmfbchat
A2: I like to rush my Will off the edge to the open side. If I get a tackle that gives a big kick set and opens up B gap, I'll call an exchange with the DT and Will to get the Will into B gap and the DT would set the edge. #swarmfbchat
A2: I like 2. I like a NUT NT and DT switching A gaps. I also like bringing a DE in the B gap and having the DT flatten to the C to contain. 1) quicker man goes first. 2) drop step and get flat. 3) Rip/swim to your new gap. #swarmfbchat
Torch Stunt (Passing Down). 5 tech & 3 tech. 3’s aiming point is hip of OT. Wide step w/rip to become a contain player. 5 tech takes 2 hard steps up the field to sell Pass Rush & dips inside to 1st open gap & penetrates! #swarmfbchat
A2: Love to Longstick the 4i’s & bring LB behind it to take advantage of BOB protection, trybto determine pass protections & take advantage of it however possible #swarmfbchat
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
A2: we put in a bear look late in the season where our best player was a stand up nose and could twist him with tackles to attack weaknesses in pass pro #swarmfbchat
That’s bananas. I have way too much ADD to not have SOMETHING in my hand. I may not even use it but at least it’s there. Safety blanket more than anything. #swarmfbchat
A2: Being undersized, we love to longstick with DE and bring backers right behind it! Our coaching point is “be tight enough to steal the DE’s wallet” while focusing on gap exchange and making ourselves “skinny” so the backers hit in the designed gap! #SwarmFBChat
A2 (continued). Rules for Torch Stunt. If 5 tech’s initial read is Reach Block, he punches OT’s outside shoulder & sheds block. He’s still a contain player. 3 tech still takes a wide path in B Gap. #swarmfbchat
A3: varying looks is key. Inexperienced guys are so worried about stance, responsibility, etc. Once they have some confidence, I like them to walk down, show pressure when not coming, come from depth, walk down and go, etc. try to stay out of patterns #swarmfbchat
A2: Moved (Pinch/Out/Slant) our DTs often this year based on 'O' tendency & need! Gave us a chance & our LBs made us right most of the time! Not too many DL/LB combo pressures. LOVE the 1-2yd deep, thru OL hip tech! #Swarmfbchathttps://t.co/arMCjUH2KJ
Depends on scheme/design of pressure and coverage behind it. Backers may read out based on O look. Showing/delaying both have merit. Favorite route is one that gets the QB on his back. #swarmfbchat
A3: Sugar, Show, come from depth. It's all good. Depends on the player and opponent. Love A and B gap. If you have a dog DL that the offensive line is worried about blitz near him to force 1on1s.
#swarmfbchat
A3: from our 3-3, we want to blitz from depth... from our other looks we want to show more blitz looks and give illusion of who is coming... #swarmfbchat
A3: Always felt you have to do all 3-show early, blitz from depth, and delay. Jokers can be just as good as actual blitzes when you get a HS OL kid to be hesitant and overthink. #SwarmFBChat
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
A3: important to do both. Because if you never show early then they’ll know you’re bluffing when you are.
Prefer inside pressure. Outside pressure leads to big plays if they get to the edge. #swarmfbchat
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
A3: I don't like to show. If my LB can get a good read to jump the snap then use it, and time it up, but if not, I like my LB's to line up and make it look like any other play. #swarmfbchat
A2: Love playing games upfront with my DL; especially if their smaller & quick. All the gaps are still occupied, just new responsibilities. Scouting & Film review play a huge role in what areas of the OL you can isolate with movements. #swarmfbchat
A3) We do work moves and hand fighting. I tell them if they want another blitz they need to get home. Have to show and go, so we can bluff. Like to come from depth when gap exchanging. Showing and bailing has been good to us. #swarmfbchat
A3: we’re odd stack so we teach single LB blitzes, progress to double LB calls. How we call in games depends on situations/feel during game #swarmfbchat
A3). Inside pressure. We try to force everything to our ✴️ & rover. Like gap exchange blitzes with lb’s and dt’s. Come late so ol can’t change protection. MHO. #swarmfbchat
A3: we stem as much as possible so its unpredictable. We blitz mostly inside. Cross blitz out of odd front like Pittsburgh and Alabama run #swarmfbchat
A3: Again, feel/strategy/situation, depending on ball placement/part of field! If we have a guy they can't block... HE'S COMING! If you have a 2nd down tendency, and a weak guard... HE'S COMING! If a boundary attack on a pass down speeds QB clock... HE'S COMING! #Swarmfbchat
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
A3 cont: I’ve found that ILB’s are crumby blitzes. They just run into guards head up. Drives me nuts. Aim at the numbers of the OL, get on an edge. #swarmfbchat
Q3: When blitzing LBers, is there a teachable progression? Thoughts on showing early vs coming late? Favorite route - inside our outside pressure? #swarmfbchat
I carry a laminated card w/ a dry erase marker & permanent one. If I call something god awful, I cover it w/ my permanent maker as to not revisit it. I’ll write tendency’s off 1st and 3rd down w/ the dry erase or match coverages/ fronts that we think will work. #swarmfbchat
Q4: When using your secondary to pressure the offense, will it come from anywhere on the field? How do you replace the blitzer in coverage? #swarmfbchat
A3 cont: I’ve found that ILB’s are crumby blitzers.
Q3. LB’s need to know if it is a “run” blitz or “pass” blitz depending on D&D. They need to know the objectively the blitz instead of running upfield like a crazy person. #swarmfbchat
A4: used to roll a lot of cover 3, honestly we don’t blitz secondary guys since we went to true Split field Coverages, they help us more in coverage in my opinion #swarmfbchat
A4: I’ve never blitzed from the secondary... but I saw it can be effective this year from a colleague. He did a really good job of blitzing an animal safety he had. Might be a new wrinkle this year #swarmfbchat
Q4: When using your secondary to pressure the offense, will it come from anywhere on the field? How do you replace the blitzer in coverage? #swarmfbchat
A4: I like the idea of blitzing from the boundary and playing 2-trap to that side and another wrinkle but it’s a secret until the end of this next year! #swarmfbchat
Every man is a potential blitzer. Will blitz from anywhere. Coverage varies. Zero, 1, Trap, Fire Zone, "Hot", etc. Coverage is flexible in relation to O personnel, formation, splits. #swarmfbchat
A4). Like to bring secondary pressure from the boundary, especially to a single. Still have lb help on the slant/ back out and you are less likely to get out leveraged on the edge on that side. #swarmfbchat
A4: rarely, they make their pay covering people. I do like bringing the corner against a flex bone that runs the rocket sweep if we have a tendency on it. When we were a 3-4 we had a few blitzes with our SS that served us well. #swarmfbchat
A4: We currently have a system where all of secondary blitzes are connected to a certain coverage call. There's almost no thinking involved. #swarmfbchat
A4: We will blitz the boundary corner with a rolling safety over top and a OLB underneath.
We also blitz the Spur from the field and roll into a cloud coverage with a hard Corner. #swarmfbchat
A3 (addition): I agree, outside pressure can lead to bug plays... but what if you teach edge pressure guys to blitz thru their key. If they are the edge/spill guy and their key is coming at them... PEEL or COLLISION w/ leverage! Takes discipline, but can be done! #Swarmfbchat
Q5: Do you consciously focus on multiple pressures per week or stay with the same number from game to game as you prepare? Are you looking for OL weakness or scheme holes? #swarmfbchat
A4 cont: I'd plan my blitzes around where the QB puts the ball least to vacate a low percentage zone. If a QB doesn't throw to away side flats, then that's where I'm bringing pressure in throwing situations. #swarmfbchat
A5: we definitely look for protection weaknesses and matchups to attack. My mindset is that we go into each season with our most basic pressures installed. Then from there, we add to our arsenal week to week based on our strengths and opponent weaknesses #swarmfbchat
A5) I like to be basic as possible. Now will that being said, I will take all of the low hanging fruit that I can grab. So if I see something or can grab an edge for the boys, we will. #swarmfbchat
A5: I’d say we look to exploit formations with easy checks for our guys and have multiple options based on game and can always adjust if needed #swarmfbchat
A5)Not so sure blitzing protections is great in high school, ball out to quick. Stick with what the kids know and change paths week to week.
#swarmfbchat whoops
A5). Will have all our pressures in during spring ball. Will see what works to what they do based on field zone and personnel. Like to have a safe call, a heat ‘em up call, and stuff hit the fan call for what they do #swarmfbchat
A5: different pressures for different weeks, but always have your best few each week. Always look for both... but more so what they ask there weakest to do and how can we put him conflict. #swarmfbchat
Q5: Do you consciously focus on multiple pressures per week or stay with the same number from game to game as you prepare? Are you looking for OL weakness or scheme holes? #swarmfbchat
Haha... I know it! It's all risk reward! I don't think we blitzed both ILBs outside the red zone ONCE. Tried to stay sound. Our edge guys though, lived and died by the "DON'T GET FIRED" rule! #Swarmfbchat
A5: I'd keep all pressures in my pocket every week, but rep the ones more I'd emphasize for the game Friday. Don't want to handicap myself in a situation. #swarmfbchat
Have our base but will add/tweak weekly. Looking for any tendency or scheme that gives us an advantage. One rule we follow is "We won't install it if we won't call it." Plenty of exotics out there installed but never ran. We won't waste reps on stuff we won't call. #swarmfbchat
A3) I like to give the players freedom to change up showing vs. from depth. Allows for different looks at different times. We teach them to understand situations so they can choose the right time for each. #swarmfbchat
A5) always dependent upon the opponent and what we feel is best to attacknthwir strengths. We have a few we like to run to any formation, and some we specifically design for certain teams. #swarmfbchat
Forgot about girls' bball action tonight - lots of playoffs starting. Still a good #swarmfbchat Really liked seeing the follow-up chatter! Good to get coaches thinking.
A3 (addition): know yourself, is what we say. If you can't get home from depth, you better show it. If you have that ability, switch it up. #Swarmfbchat
Hope you got some good info from the chat tonight. As always, enjoyed bringing it to you! Feel free to send Topics my way for future chats! Already have a coach-inspired topic for next week! #swarmfbchat
A3) We like to mix it up with our LB's stemming throughout the game. We have had "slow" blitzers and we just make them show (usually eating a block) to hopefully open up someone else. #swarmfbchat
