Here comes the first Q....
Josie from Arcadia,CA. Fourth grade teacher and tech coach. Love Manning!
What did you discover or question @ teaching or learning from a SuperBowl commercial you saw during the SuperBowl?
Amen! The game is secondary…especially when my team isn’t playing in it. :)
This is Q1 https://t.co/DFeU7TGZ6O
What did you discover or question @ teaching or learning from a SuperBowl commercial you saw during the SuperBowl?
A1: Cities that win the Super Bowl see a spike in birth rate...apparently...
iKnow this might sound difficult, but maybe you can read responses while forming your own. Like Ss in a ClassRM.
A1 Dont eat dorritos in the delivery room
A1: That I definitely do not need any of the products advertised but a lot of $ was spent trying to convince me otherwise.
A1: Christopher Walken ad inspired me to write a blog post. We as educators shouldn't be "beige socks." https://t.co/PAGu5O7fnv
Humor seems like such a powerful communication tool but we rarely use it in class except in brief moments. https://t.co/1Uk96RQzGa
A1: I kept thinking about creativity - how this is such a sought after commodity in today's workplace. Are we fostering that?
A1: I learned how uninformed I am having only viewed online scores
I loved that commercial! It was hilarious!
SuperBowlSunday is when the most domestic violence cases occurs. Minored in Psych.
I can't help but think of the power of kids' laughter in Monsters, Inc. I liked the truth of that film
A1:Doritos commercial w/dogs reminded me that I want to teach our Ss to be creative problem solvers
A1 use your 60 secs wisely
A1 Don't let Middle School Boys make commercials PuppyMonkeyBaby
Does that make us more leary of the companies that are spending $ telling us we need them to be effective?
A1 brought to mind a"discrepant event" throw something at Ss they can't explain & they can't look away https://t.co/bD58FSMXcm
A1: Find a work around when you meet an obstacle, like the dogs who stacked up so they could buy chips.
A1: Obviously the Prius commercial! Made me think of how often I put my Ss inside a box :-P
A1: Flash and humor goes a long way in engaging audience. Also saw danger that image may supplant critical thinking
A1) phone company ball analogy uses selective data to promote their company ?
Ha, I didn't see it, but I can only imagine
This commercial freaked my freak. Make it stop!
just talk about commercials in general Jeremiah
Right but if a lesson included something like that would you ever forget it????
A1 - i want to discuss w/ kids how Prius commercial has pros & cons for company
Thanks, I was thinking that, plus it's always great to be novice in convo...not a new place for me here
Interesting, may I ask for more along these lines
Always wary when certain cultural performances/beliefs are commodified. What is capitalism really selling?
science cheats we just blow something up and everyone remembers
Interesting point. Use our precious time judiciously. Although I'm not sure how judicious MonkeyBabyPuppy is
Well, to be fair, as a male, I don't know if I've ever really grown in my humor since MS...
A1: that I need to teach my Ss how to evaluate what they see/hear/read, be informed consumers of products & knowledge
LOL, is that why are so popular (:
very true, attention spans, and class time are limited - make it count
Do any of you use SuperBowl commercials when you get back in class after the game?
A1 - & discuss what preliminary thinking UBER had to do so their freecar ride will work
A1:Too each his own... Seek that which fascinates
+1000! With the joys of internet searches and world at fingertips, informed consumption is critical https://t.co/fdbUE2P0EG
A1: that I need to teach my Ss how to evaluate what they see/hear/read, be informed consumers of products & knowledge
W/advent of technology, I just wait for Monday morning and see the best w/out sacrificing my Sunday
Research tells us that age of student = mins of attention span https://t.co/CCeOOeEBrg
very true, attention spans, and class time are limited - make it count
Yep. Used the “America the Beautiful” debacle of last yr in critical media studies unit. Doritos works - gender roles
gave me a lot of green screen ideas - so might
This is so true, esp when Ss are asked to do research and forget about vetting their sources. https://t.co/UiwN8kuBuG
A1: that I need to teach my Ss how to evaluate what they see/hear/read, be informed consumers of products & knowledge
That's cool, I would love to know your thinking here
Yes! As classrm T I did ad analysis/literary elements unit w/Super Bowl ads Miss that lesson now :) https://t.co/NQwvqEwC0n
Do any of you use SuperBowl commercials when you get back in class after the game?
A1: To show Ss the meaning of labels and to move past it...def liked that commercial
Q2 What did you discover or question about teaching or learning from cooking or eating a Super Bowl snack, meal, or drink?
A2: Trying to use every new tech tool is like trying to eat all the food in a Super Bowl spread. So many good choices. Must focus.
They make for great discussion, physchology, design, message & claim, & people are passionate of their opinion of each
iPurposely said something inappropriate for the tone +content of conversation. Terrorist that I am.
😬🍎😡
A2: Don't go to Costco week before Super Bowl, it's crazy
A2 it's a weird nexus of staples & new/art - some foods are must haves others are new experiments - just like elements a lesson
A2: pick something new and give it a try, you don't know you dont like it unless you try it
A2: Too much of anything is not a good thing.
A2 - when driving by Papa Johns, I saw they had many more cars ready to deliver than usual - so planning ahead is good idea
That's so true in general...but especially as T, being mindful of what if and paying attention to details
A2: ? Socially shunned4️⃣being a victim of🚔Brutality+relocating4️⃣safety + job opportunities. Like iDeserved it.😬👉🏼🕌
A2: We know Ts love to connect and learn w/ food. So do our ss. I have a breakfast cereal bar that builds relationships & fun.
i dont know actor/actress (think it was bud commercial) but they had variety of locations they talked at 1/2
Mother made chili I brought Fritos. How can I add to someone else’s great creation? How can my students? https://t.co/ty1omm5pWC
A2: Like with collaborating w colleagues...bring something to share and make it good...nobody likes a mooch who brings worksheets!
2/2 - i think my kids could easily see how they might use that idea
Or run multimillion dollar companies.
Hey Lee, can you please stop tweeting in random stuff into the hashtag during the chat? Can you do it @ end of chat?
So true! Ss get bored if we dot change it up. My kids love being my guinea pigs when we try something new.
A2: The sum of the parts is greater than each individual component, just like a great lesson.
Might this be a Q you pose to Ss?
Amen, I could barely move
yes! food is a center of social gatherings, we share ideas, food triggers memories, calms us, lowers barriers, etc
I'd only add informed consumers AND creators of info. Ideally contributors to the collective intelligence. https://t.co/SbEGfNOLte
+1000! With the joys of internet searches and world at fingertips, informed consumption is critical https://t.co/fdbUE2P0EG
A1: that I need to teach my Ss how to evaluate what they see/hear/read, be informed consumers of products & knowledge
A1: STEM commercial! That was kind of exciting. Promoting girls 👭 in Engineering+STEM! Encouraging Thinkers💭+ProblemSolvers
wife's family centers on food, we're not even done w/meal and talking about next, it's a global unifier
Had 2 ss make food for ancient world project. As we ate, we discussed all we learned & convo went in new direction.
A2b: Like with life, once your plate is full, stop trying to pile more on...all you will get is indigestion
food helps us feel safe and satisfies our needs opening us up to sharing
Maybe a lunch rotates through an extra long class period every day of the week
uAlways eat during . Even when I was on CentralStandardTime. Dinner time =
uAlways eat during . Even when I was on CentralStandardTime. Dinner time =
so you are saying "learn to say no."
Agree completely. We've got to keep the balance of consumption to creation tipped generously to the latter.
A2: Many hands make light work!
A2) when preparing make sure you have enough food...and enough instruction to last an entire period
Mind's all over, but I am wondering, might it be the universality to T all subjects, like say we could all be chefs
Which is a skill I have a hard time doing!!
Need to bow out of chat. Family calls. :) Have a great week, everyone!
I'm liking the thinking here, how might we facilitate to meet all needs here
Cool idea. Ss love to eat together, but not everyone gets the chance. Make it happen.
iHope my tweets re doesn't get me in trouble or worse - expelled.
🙋🏽 ✨
Q3 What did you discover or question about teaching or learning from a Super Bowl conversation? https://t.co/zzrU9Ft8CT
Just coming in- it is my daughter’s birthday and we just got back from celebrating at Medieval Times. https://t.co/F7SdSWn3V5
Need to bow out of chat. Family calls. :) Have a great week, everyone!
Your value will be missed, but look forward to your return, be great this week
Calling all block schedule teachers! https://t.co/JGYN9Gd4G9
A2) when preparing make sure you have enough food...and enough instruction to last an entire period
And kick some brain! https://t.co/Lx4w74w7WF
Your value will be missed, but look forward to your return, be great this week
A3: Just started a WASC visit today. So our team bonded at the hotel enjoying the game after working all day. Making connections
A3: Focusing on breaking labels. In math there's many labels to break from Ss
love lessons that bring in cultural food for an experience, our Mythology Ss cook dishes using historical recipes
Thanks for including me- though I did not watch the Super Bowl except for some of the after game stuff….
Yes, we run PD w/food, why not kick it up a notch...sorry thinking chef from futurama
A3 Radio pregame show said this SuperBowl is missing a villain? Should we use villains to motivate or add interest? in class or PD
<3 Class potluck, break bread together, great for sharing, learning, and building connections
A3 - the prius commercial really bothered me in that it had a confusing message - might my lessons do the same sometimes ?
A3: Passionate people get people's attention. Teach and lead with passion
Ahh that's it Dan, let's build on this.
Happy b-day wow that's gotta be fun
A3 Watched with a retired teacher and talked about need for mentoring new teachers in district no mater how many yrs experience
A2: Before I lost weight, in a land+time long long ago - I always contributed2️⃣making food4️⃣an event like
NO appreciation
A3: It's what Ss will talk about, need to have some relevance to build relationships on
A3: Nothing pays off like persistence. Carolina should have outmuscled Denver but they were dominated all day long.
A3: manning refused to answer about future, enjoying the moment is something Ts forget, were thinking 5 steps ahead
That's interesting, what might that conversation sounded like?
I think it can also be done just because it builds connections.
Just caught a commercial for the Mini Clubman car. It's message is defy labels!
A3) Fav team/political discussions may lead to arguments. Opinions are your own. They are not wrong. are better!
A3: What is valued by some seems ridiculous to others.
Just saw that one too! Valuable message.
I wonder if Admin could support this, like by department or something...
I loved his answer - rather than committing to the future- enjoying and celebrating in the present! https://t.co/TzATjxVQBV
A3: manning refused to answer about future, enjoying the moment is something Ts forget, were thinking 5 steps ahead
A3 watched with a teacher from another district, shared ideas & talked about what is working/challenging us
Truth In music we talk about how important it is to play together and help each other
A3- unless i missed it - the clydesdales didn't have tearjerk ad - lesson:.remember kids do look forward to repeat fav lessons??
. Mentorship is so important in helping new teachers get their footing and stay in the profession.
Yes, celebrate the successes, we're trained to always be thinking of negatives and what's next, not about right now
A3: Humility goes a long way. We don't know everyone's story. Work for understanding and appreciating. Peyton discussing Newton.
A3: Seek to understand before you jump to any conclusions
Its also impt to mentor the veterans as technology is evolving and scary for some tahrs.
Q4 What did you discover or question about teaching or learning from watching the Super Bowl game or what you did during the game?
absolutely, the learning happening in the room right NOW can sometimes be overshadowed by our plans, slow down
and not taking the moment from the team to put the spotlight on himself
I push the message of Be Here for my ss. Be present in the now to build the future.
It was the gentlemanly thing to do. https://t.co/AjQu40gocJ
and not taking the moment from the team to put the spotlight on himself
A4: Observed how intertwined American sports, nationalism, and militarization are.
That's awesome, what might the forms of this be for you?
WHATever. That does NOT apply to Super Bowl Sunday. That's hilarious, too.
recently ask what was union doing to help struggling T since Admin was not-we talked about how to find time 2/2
A4: Even if you aren't having the best game, it is vital you keep showing up and trying to make it work!
A4: With age comes wisdom.
A4 people connect with it from multiple angles: game/commercials/chat/food How do we find ways for Ss to connect with a lesson?
A4 Learned that it takes a lot of players to be successful. Not just offense or defense.
A4 Like a football team, how can my students all contribute to the same objective using their specific talents?
A4: I get fidgety when I'm losing interest. Hmm...Lots of restlessness in room- they're bored.
A3:Halftime show made me think abt the possibilities when we have open minds! Friend thought Coldplay wouldnt fit, then loved
A4: Broncos D studied & studied their opponent, U can't put in minimal effort & expect good results, hard work gets results
A4b: Even with the best laid plans, there are many times you need to roll with the punches and improvise!
A4 - that having everyone work together can lead to a very nice outcome (love placards at 1/2 time)
not just new Ts but veterans new to District they often fall they gap
A4 Peyton Manning “Don’t make emotional decisions.” That's good advice for everyone. Ts, Parents etc....
A4 I missed the 3Q, but ended up at the same spot w/everyone impt stuff was highlited back to me - do we always need the full sem?
yes please! With my remed Ss I have brought in food each week to build connections, it works
way to be there, we're better together
Ts have to be so flexible as you never know what your SS need to help energize them to a lesson or concepts.
A4) Sometimes newbies to the SB crack under pressure but it doesn't stop them from trying the next year
I was working on a PD during the game. The game was not engaging for me. Carolina was frustrating to watch.
A4c: Sometimes, even with your best efforts, things do not go the way you'd like...the importance of dedication and reflection!
A4: Playing with a purpose is rewarding
Nicely done sir, knowing this pay dividends in relationships, in what ways do they grow?
Good advice for when a well-planned lesson doesn't go as planned
A4: Watched game w/ son who doesn't know much abt. football & kept asking ?s - encourage curiosity by appreciating inquisitiveness
LOHS football motto = hard work pays off & Band’s wish is the emphasis is on excellence https://t.co/Aj2rbXkcS7
A4: Broncos D studied & studied their opponent, U can't put in minimal effort & expect good results, hard work gets results
Exactly! That lesson may have worked 100x before, but this time, with diff students, you need to change it up!
Only if it's a 🎥or 📺show with Superheroes. counts.
A4: Everyone on the team has a role to play Our Ss success depends on all of us working together
A4: Ditto https://t.co/kArlhnKrXl
A4: Everyone on the team has a role to play Our Ss success depends on all of us working together
meets needs, keeps them coming back even if life is rough, they know I am there for them
A4 Even when the game was out of reach, Panthers gave it their all
Yes! So much learning happens when we set ss loose. https://t.co/titWJ73YSH
A4: Playing with a purpose is rewarding
A4 Not exciting game this year, hard to stay focused, conversation was more interesting-lesson must be engaging or S will tuneout
I'm yawning. That's the norm at PrivateSchools.
students need to work to the best of their abilities and bring their talents together as a team to accomplish an objective
A4: Don't lose your positive energy when things start to suck. You need to lean on it most when things are bad.
That is one thing I do not doubt. how might it foster relationships btw Ss?
Totally! Last yr was a lot of soccer analogies, this year it's basketball. Specifically the Warriors.
Interesting, how might that sound like if I'm a Ss in your class?
absolutely. That's happened too. Can't quit based on one game/lesson
absolutely the teamwork of it all. Collaboration and teamwork produces something greater than the sum of the individuals
Q5 How do people get interested in an event when they aren’t a fan of the sport or the teams? What can we learn from this?
A5: Find a hook! and et people interested! We do Oscar Bingo and we care about all the categories because we want to win!
A5 I really do not like football- but I have been to a few Superball Parties for the socializing w/friends
good point. keeping a positive attitude thru difficult lessons is what will help you accomplish the objective
A5 Hype it good, brand it well and they will come!
A5 Social interaction we all crave it and that is what the big games are
Or DomesticViolence. Don't forget domestic violence. PsychFact. 😐
A5: have other incentive to participate food/commercials/company; give Ss a reason to want to be there/participate/learn/engage
Ummm- see what I mean? I like the world cup way better. https://t.co/Q0aYxBhlwV
A5 I really do not like football- but I have been to a few Superball Parties for the socializing w/friends
A5 multiple modality, people connect & find value through different channels visual/social/kinest/etc. Hit several every time
and Couldn't chat but will be sure 2read tweets. The power of play can never be over stated! https://t.co/rCgvw5zFpO
Yum social interaction and the Food best things in life
A5: I always look for at least one take away from anything I do reluctantly. Try to encourage this view in class.
So a little group time is always appreciated by everyone right?
A5: Be passionate about the topic and be a storyteller. That draws people in and increases interest.
A5 Excitement about something is contagious. I tend to get my Ss interested by getting them stoked about something.
What might that mean for you?
A5 find ways to discover how each Ss/T connects or finds value early in the year, use it to hook them again & again
Yes- I enjoy the friends (not a large crowd of people I don’t know) and I like bringing snacks to share.
Almost like..."if you build it, they will come!"
A5: So important. As says, when everyone talks, everyone learns. Ensure ss are working together https://t.co/9vspVs2l7e
A5 Social interaction we all crave it and that is what the big games are
A5: connecting with others/social aspect is probably the biggest draw to an event
Either sharing food or yourself, we're better together
A5:If you build the excitement they will come! Engage Ss by creating a buzz https://t.co/IyTFhr8jxt
Q5 How do people get interested in an event when they aren’t a fan of the sport or the teams? What can we learn from this?
Absolutely. Raconteurs make anything desirable and intriguing. https://t.co/6XmyVHeS8B
A5: Be passionate about the topic and be a storyteller. That draws people in and increases interest.
I like this, it's about being an inclusive commitment, I wonder if that's the biggest take-away for our classroom
Yes! though listening as part of the dialogue/discussion is important too - sharing & responding https://t.co/R75UneQxl8
A5: So important. As says, when everyone talks, everyone learns. Ensure ss are working together https://t.co/9vspVs2l7e
A5 Social interaction we all crave it and that is what the big games are
I like creating a buzz in my math examples/creating that hook, Ss's love it and feed off that energy!
A5: connecting (like with the student-teacher relationship and student relationships) are beneficial to the learning process
Q6 What real world, non-typical activity could your whole staff do or class do where they can "Learn While Living"
What are some ways you generate that buzz w/Ss?
A5: MUSIC Everyone likes music. Or FOOD. Everyone likes food. Or parties, unless you're introverted...But socializing (lunchtime)
A6: What if staff meetings were held outside? at cafe? or happy hour? could it as change environment?
Can't wait to see these answers to Q:6
They get interested in the players, the backstory. In we can give students a reason to CARE about the answer
A5: It all comes down to human connection: The more we know/learn, the more connections we can make with others. Open yourself up.
We need here for answer 6.
A6: teaching Newtons Laws so we've been doing a lot of real world examples and labs, Ss are making observations everywhere
A6 always wanted to do something like a habitat for humanity event with a class or group of teachers, or help at a shelter
A6: I try to fit time in on Mondays to share our learnings from the weekend. Helps w/ notion that we are learning all the time.
iHaven't heard the word stoked in 20yrs.
Well that tells me then when my vocal stopped developing, I still use that word...
a Twitter question limiting their response, padlet boards for them to post their thoughts, hands on math
A6 I once volunteered to be "hostages" for a police training simulation with friends, we came out asking/sharing/learning so much
A6 Last year We went outside to complete a photosynthesis QR hunt, a run/breath/heart lab & a reproductive potential lab w/trees.
Very interesting, so a variety of tools depending on Q?
A6: maybe have students make a video of how a certain topic could relate to life?
