Yes! I'm liking the 8-week term more and more, but it does create a fast pace for everyone involved.

Let's get started! Q1) What can we borrow from online companies to improve online classrooms? Tools, strategies, processes?
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:16 PM EDT
A1) All of the above. Tools I don't think is really the problem - other than so many to pick from.
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:18 PM EDT
A1) I think what I found so valuable in class I took on virtual teams was strategies/processes
#iolchat
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:18 PM EDT
@jshamsy
You may be right about the tools. There are so many options now, even within a single category, like virtual meetings
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:18 PM EDT
Starting to view
#onlinelearning
as more of a team than trad. classroom .. spend a lot of time setting up LMS but not the team
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:20 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Yes & maybe people get overwhelmed and start using tools to appear relevant/tech savvy..using wrong tool can backfire
#iolchat
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:20 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Are we spending too much time on the tech set up? It's entirely possible.

#iolchat
Can I join in late?
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:20 PM EDT
@IOLblog
I think you have to have both - tech/interface needs to be solid because that is the medium/mode of comm
#iolchat
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:20 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Absolutely - it's so easy to get frustrated trying to learn a bunch of new platforms; makes you want to walk away.

@jernstberger
Hello, Jon! Great to see you. And, yes, of course. :)
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:21 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Not sure about your courses, but I have found students want to do as little as possible to get to the content =(

@jernstberger
Do you know each other? You should!
#GoodPeopleToKnow

IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:23 PM EDT
@jshamsy
I haven't seen that as much, but w/grad courses, older students, perhaps different expectations.
#iolchat
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:24 PM EDT
@jshamsy
So a related strategy might be streamlined systems - more efficient access?
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:24 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Just thinking that tool many tools, clicks, websites create a barrier between learner and content
#iolchat
jshamsy
Apr 20 @ 12:25 PM EDT
@IOLblog
Good design, making access easy, standardized ..Ss need to know where to expect to find something & then find it there
#iolchat
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:26 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Number of clicks an interesting measure. Not sure we pay attention to that, but remember that concern in the "early days"

I'd say that forethought into the most universal tools would be wise, as well.

Other applicable virtual team strategies..team charter, regular check ins, clear goals/expectations, managing conflicts, etc.

@IOLblog
It sets the rules of the road - I think this is important & getting the Ss involved in construction creates buy-in
#iolchat
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:31 PM EDT
@jshamsy
Exactly - students as stakeholders in the process.

Universal tool. Like
@googledrive
,
@GoogleKeep
and
@googlecalendar
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:35 PM EDT

Haven't tried
@GoogleKeep
! But I use
@GoogleDrive
at work and in class. Universal, indeed!

Apr 20 @ 12:36 PM EDT
A2) I think there are some transferable elements - communication methods, awareness of others, scheduling, regular check ins, etc.

The dynamic where the teacher is the outsider is awkward. The course shell isn't nec. "ours".
IOLblog
Apr 20 @ 12:47 PM EDT
@jernstberger
@jshamsy
That's true, too. There are a lot of related issues to navigate. We can be "outsiders" in multiple ways.
