Join #ICEilchat for the last Thursday of the month at 8pm CST as we discuss topics on ed tech, collaboration, building a PLN, professional learning and so much more!
Greetings, everyone! Brent here, elementary principal in beautiful (and hot) Southern California. Excited to join you in the Easiest Book Club Experience Ever! #ICEilchat
I'm here, I'm here! We moved into our new house on Saturday, I started my new job in Freeport today, but I promised I'd be here today and I am! #iceilchat
Rushton is on a flight with no wifi today, and has sent some thoughts to add. He wants you to know he looks forward to reading the ideas we share !#ICEilchat
In his place, we have Brent Coley A little info on Brent - Brent Coley @brentcoley principal, podcaster and really cool guy as our special guest. Please give him a big hello! #ICEilchat
Q1: This seems to be the most diverse of the five areas in the book, varying from mindfulness to Creative Commons and citing sources. Given your experiences and/or what you read in this area, what is your definition of "delivery" with instruction? #ICEilchat
A1: Delivery has to be more than just dropping something off. Unless we receive something, was it really delivered? As it relates to instruction, we have to make sure the package (learning) is received by students. #ICEilchat

A1: I'm behind on my reading (see: I moved across the state), but from my experience, delivery is how you present your mesage: oral, visual, auditory, etc. #ICEilchat
A1: "Delivery" means that all the details leading up to the "finale" have been thought out, planned for, and executed in a way that brings excitement to those receiving the final product. And our Ss deserve nothing less! #ICEilchat

A1: The transfer of key learning objectives from the obscure to application - with all the mess in between as evidence of the struggle toward mastery. #ICEilchat

So true! Drop and go may work for @FedEx, but it is not enough for our students! We must make sure they want what we are giving and are going to keep it! #ICEilchat

Great point, Lisa! Delivery has to also = being accepted / digested. And this is SO individual based on the needs of those receiving the "information" #ICEilchat
Q2: Chapter 27, "Know the Two-Minute Summary," is one that challenges us to be able to summarize what we do each day. Is this something any of you already practice? If not, is it something you want to try? #ICEilchat

YES! Could not agree more! As a former evaluator / collaborator, I ALWAYS wanted to walk into classrooms and see "energetic learning" rather than Ss sitting in desks nodding their heads in agreement. The more energy, the more learning! #ICEilchat
Absolutely! A quiet classroom is not always an engaged classroom. There is a difference between noise and productive noise (a.k.a. students involved in collaborative conversations). #ICEilchat
A2: Sometimes have students summarize at end of class or beginning of next. Also have them partner and summarize for a student who has been absent. #ICEilchat
A2: Reflection is key to improvement. I don't always utilize this in my daily practice, but rather something I do when looking at specific goals. I believe that it is something I should consider on a more consistent basis. #ICEilchat

Love this idea, Lisa! I think student reflection can lead to a better understanding of what they have learned and what they "need" / "want" to learn. #ICEilchat
A2: I'm in brand-new role for me and the district; I've got my 2-minute summary down! I'll be guiding the implementation of project-based learning and inquiry strategies, and helping foster increased collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking! #ICEilchat

A3: Ch. 23 - Start Class with Something Unpredictable.
Such a great reminder for teachers and admin. So often I've been guilty of announcing what we were going to do rather than teasing the learning to make it exciting. #ICEilchat
A2: I worked with a teacher for years who would end each day with "Today's Topics." Students had to record three things done every day and they had to be realtors to learning, not just chunks of the day like PE, lunch, or maths. #ICEilchat
A3: I liked chapter 24. Sometimes I get so caught up in getting through all of the material that I forget to give students time to just exist. #ICEilchat
A3: Give Credit Where Credit is Due! Battle this initially with citing images. Students often mention other teachers don't require citation of images and don't model. #ICEilchat

A3: Using Quiet to Your and Their Advantage - This is an area that is difficult for anyone, but especially educators. Giving Ss the chance to think / reflect rather than Ts "giving" them the answer is empowering. #ICEilchat
UGH! Such a great point! Sometimes it's hard being the teacher that does things "differently". But in the end...the learning in YOUR classroom will impact them above & beyond. Keep it up, Lisa! #ICEilchat
Q4: We are always interested in resources related to the theme. What have you seen or can point us to that might be good for the assembled resources? #ICEilchat
A4: Teach Like a Pirate addresses content delivery. @burgessdave talks about preheating the grill of learning. You don't throw a steak down on a cold grill. The same applies in the classroom #ICEilchat#tlap
