Marc Drumm, Senior Instructional Designer at West Chester University coming to you this week from Nashville, TN where I’m attending the Digital Book World conference for @WCUeTextbook#AppleEDUChat#DBW18
A1: I am a big fan of simple graphic organizers to help students visualize essay components: sketching triangles and squares helps students make sense of paragraphing. #AppleEDUChat
Hi everyone! I'm Michelle, Instructional Technology Coach from around the Chicago area. Very excited to learn more about animating #sketchnotes! #AppleEDUchat
Q1: "Sketchnotes" are a combination of traditional notetaking and emergent thinking represented by sketches. While in school, what did you "doodle" in the margins while taking notes? Share a doodle with us. #AppleEDUChat
A1: I was a constant doodler and drew loads of shapes and patterns. Only later, once I was taught, did I start including color and sketches along side my traditional notes. #AppleEDUchat

Liz here from Ohio! A1: I use drawings to map out organizational ideas for my district- like PD course framework and ideas for digital badge designs! It lets me get my ideas down immediately while they’re fresh in my mind! #AppleEDUChat
Boost your professional learning for free by badging-up in the #AppleTeacher program. It’s packed with ideas, tips, and features to make the creations in your classroom and school even more incredible. #AppleEDUchat
Hi #AppleEDUChat! I’m an elementary instructional tech coach from Chicago. Excited to lean into my #growthmindset tonight with this awesome chat format
A1- I use drawing in the form of sketchnotes to capture presentations and as an approach to present some assignments. Here’s an early attempt! #EveryoneCanCreate#AppleEduChat
A2- I created this Pages template to help students get creative in their story telling with drawings. It’s just a simple outline now, but I hope to expand upon it in the future! #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreatehttps://t.co/ThCDKYtgtI
A1: @AndyLeiser Students are currently working on their Animal Habitat Project. They are using images to trace, color and add line animation, along with the record audio in Keynote.
#AppleEDUchat
IA2: I haven’t tried the animated skating yet, but love sketching what I am studying. I have gotten mire creative with the representations and it helps the learning stick. #OctalysisBook#AppleEDUchat
A2: my good friend @meredithedtech made this as she watched a keynote talk I did. She’s got mad skills. #AppleEDUchat One of the best sketchnotes I’ve seen.

A2: I always love the challenge of turning something small into something more. This was an activity @LNapoli_Liberty did at school for #dotday to show how they could use their dot to showcase how they would impact the world, while also connecting it to writing. #AppleEDUchat
A2 I find that I pay closer attention in a presentation when I am sketching and the added benefit of it being calming when I am doodling for fun! #emojis#AppleEDUChat
A2: my good friend @meredithedtech made this as she watched a keynote talk I did. She’s got mad skills. #AppleEDUchat One of the best sketchnotes I’ve seen.
A2: When I’m stuck - I turn to drawing and doodles. I love to mock-up new logos and play with the design (especially negative space) in shapes, letters, and numbers. #AppleEDUchat
Q3: There are a variety of ways to "Animate" your Sketchnotes. When drawn digitally, you can use line draw animations or time-lapse effects found in apps. How might these increase engagement and retention of ideas? #AppleEDUChat
A2: For me drawing both slows down and segments processes or concepts that seem difficult to understand when viewed as a whole. It’s easier to be creative when I understand all the parts. #AppleEDUchat
A3: For me it’s far more enticing and far more engaging. I don’t know what’s going to happen next. In a way its like opening an bunch of presents as I watch the creation unfold. #AppleEDUchat

A2 It forces you to think creatively - what is the best visual representation for the idea or activity? Here my first attempt at a sketchnote https://t.co/RwIWsWx4w2#AppleEDUChat
A2 After reading an EdTech book. I took sketchnotes to help me visualize my new role as a digital learning coach. One of my very first sketchnotes... #AppleEDUchat
This is great! I taught my students to draw today on iPad using Keynote. They were so excited. They taught me about filling in the circle with the paint like you show in this video! I'm always learning too! #appleEDUchat
A1: I love drawing on MS Paint and will draw my own sketches/art for my tests/quizzes/or assignments when I am feeling inspired. The students love it! #AppleEDUchat
Drawing builds confidence which pushes kids to take risks and try something new! These were created by K/1 students (YES, that young!) and when they realize what they CAN create, they're willing to try anything! I love seeing them take risks in their projects! #AppleEDUchat
YESSSS! I love this! I always draw flowers this way with my kids and they love doing it too! We talk about how flowers follow the sun! :) <3 #AppleEDUchat

I am slightly mesmorized by your video. Being able to create something and then see it come alive would definitely add another modality to the learning. Another memory and connection for the concept! #AppleEDUchat
Ha! Just today, I demoed this to colleagues in the hallway between classes on my iPad. It’s a viral tool. I’ve been animating Chemical examples recently #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate

A3 Seems so basic, but any time we engage more than one modality simultaneously w/ our Ss, we increase retention of the content. The beautiful thing is that it's done seamlessly w/o Ss really "knowing" it's an added benefit; it's just FUN to them. #AppleEDUchat
A3) #Keynote has become our favorite animation tool. Young adults have to plan & work on movement. Amazing to see the details they include when they are being creative! #AppleEDUChat 1/2
A3: Animated sketch notes are able to show the process! I love traditional sketch notes, but animating them takes it to a new level because it helps you remember the full process...where it started, and how the ideas grew and changed. #AppleEDUchat
Q3 ive noticed students absolutely love seeing their work being drawn automatically! They tend to replay their animation over and over again helping with retention. #AppleEDUchat

Love this @AndyLeiser ! Where can we find your videos? I shared the lasso tool with students today and got a huge WOW!!! I only shared half of what you did! Would love to share this video with my 7th graders. #EveryoneCanCreate#AppleEDUchat

A2: Doodling has helped me think more creatively when I think about how to share information with others. Sketchnotes are much better received than a standalone quote without any visuals! #AppleEDUchat
A3: I also love using the animation of sketches to teach! This is a great way to show the process, point out what you see and help students to really SEE what you're talking about :) https://t.co/hfGce0IHic#appleEDUchat

This is a great time to remind everyone at #AppleEDUchat and beyond. Join us on Friday and show the world what you can create in honor of an extraordinary educator in your life. Do it your way. Share to #EveryoneCanCreate and #WorldTeacherDay
World Teachers’ Day is on October 5th🎉! Spend some time thanking an educator or mentor that helped encourage you to be creative. Share a note, drawing, video, photo, or story to tell them how much they mean to you using #EveryoneCanCreate + #WorldTeachersDay.
YES! Seeing their work animated also teaches them that it is ok to make mistakes. It puts emphasis on process vs. product :) The mistakes fade away & become tiny steps along the way...part of the project, but not something that students have to focus on. #AppleEDUchat

A3: Ss have a vested interest in what they are creating. They are going through the process of design to final product. They get to see their work come to life! #AppleEDUChat@AppleEdu
A3: Animating a drawing helps students see the process not only the final product. This allows them to make connections and internalize the concept. Excellent tool for language acquisition. #AppleEduChat
A4: SO many reasons to sketch! Research shows it is way better for retention...which makes sense. We remember pictures better than text (think of a newspaper) so sketchnotes help info stick :) Reasons to Sketch: https://t.co/indu8dFx7h#AppleEDUchat
Q5: What drawing tips or tricks do you use to elevate the quality of your creations? #AppleEDUchat We’d love to see a screen recording or screenshot of your tips/tricks. #EveryoneCanCreate

A5: I like to turn down the opacity of text and neatly trace over the top with drawing tools to create uniform, balanced, and straight lines. This works great for images, too. #AppleEDUchat
A4: Sketchnotes allow students to connect new info to their previous experience in an amazing way!. I love that sketchnotes can look totally different but represent the same topic because Ss relate symbols/sketches to different, previously known memories and ideas. #appleEDUchat
When using #Keynote for drawing & animation, the LASSO TOOL is super handy! You can lasso (select) part of a drawing to separate and animate on its own — OR — lasso (#merge) multiple separate drawings to animate together #EveryoneCanCreate#AppleEDUchat#powertip
A5: At a staff meeting @bethany_nugent taught me the best tips ever. Pretty sure she was doing it way before it was cool! I didn't feel like an artist then, but now I really believe #EveryoneCanCreate Can you share Bethany?! #AppleEDUchat

A4 It’s not easy to translate something from words to images that can be easily drawn and make sense to others - I think it takes a thorough understanding to really even try it. #AppleEDUChat
So true! It is amazing to see sketch notes that all look different...rather than bulleted notes sheets that are all the same. I once had a S tell me that notes are an "adult thing" as they sketched.... many Ss would rather draw or doodle if given the chance! #AppleEDUchat
In reply to
@ClaudioZavalaJr, @danvkoch, @AppleEDU
If you build your entire Sketchnote in Keynote, using the incredibly powerful and flexible Drawing tools, you can publish a finished #AnimatedSketchnote that takes engagement to the next level! #AppleEDUchat
A4: sketincng adds another layer to the basic concept with images and color to make it more memorable. (Now if I can only figure out how to lighten my screen recordings. ) ☹️#AppleEDUchat
Not intersted in cookie-cutter compliance. Looking for empowering learners to create and share their own understanding with choice and voice - be it audio, visual, or both. #AppleEDUchat

A5: Tracing is drawing. I like importing sample images into my canvas, turning opacity to around 50%, tracing lines, then deleting the underlying imagine and adding finishing touches. #AppleEDUChat

This is great! I did this last May with my students, and they loved it. I wish I would have saved some examples! This year, right? #AppleEduChat#everyonecancreate

A4 Students become engaged in their learning when they are drawing. They will stay on the task to make it “perfect” they are absorbing more information while they are constantly refining their art work. #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate#ADE2018@ITSCCSD#CCSDfam
A4: Sketchnote doodles should match big ideas, so we make connections between ideas to figure out what is the most important message to get across #AppleEDUchat

This! Sketching while listening improves connection and retention of information and concepts. There’s data to back this up. https://t.co/pBwPOPTI2O#AppleEDUChat
Trying to draw something realistic? Look at a picture for reference! Brains simplify & aren't good at remembering all the details. Looking at a picture helps you remember the real shape & details! Break it down to simple lines-you got this! https://t.co/hfGce0IHic#AppleEDUchat
Q6: Why might you encourage sketchnoting - animated or static - in your learning space? How would you help it grow? #AppleEDUchat We hope you will share your thoughts in the form of a sketch - animated or static. #EveryoneCanCreate
A5: Play and practice! Start with what you know...and then work towards new things! I love having Ss start sketchnotes with a house, cloud, etc., move on to banners, arrows, and eventually try animals etc. They start where they're comfortable & move to risk taking! #AppleEDUchat
Preloaded shapes help less confident students feel like their drawings look good - leads to greater focus on meaning and representation than on artistic quality #appleeduchat
That is how many young adults start. They will trace the shapes then zentangle in the spaces. They move quickly to wanting to do their selfies & more. #AppleEDUChat
A4. Even as a teacher/coach, sketching helps me stay more engaged in a lesson or lecture. Referencing images on a sketchnote helps me to remember the content more. It really takes thought to decide what image will summarize the content. #AppleEDUchat
A6: the mere act of drawing out your thinking sparks connections between ideas you may not have even begun to think of initially. This is real ideation—in the moment—at its finest! 💡#AppleEDUchat
This is such a great way to build S confidence! I often start with activities like this with younger Ss....then I point out "See, your hands can do it, now we have to train your brain to see it!" This helps them know it IS possible, & makes them more willing to try! #AppleEDUchat
A6 We’re always looking for alternatives to the “standard” types of assignments and this would be fairly easy to explain and demonstrate. The results would also make good content for distance courses. #AppleEDUChat
As we continue sharing, major #EveryoneCanCreate shout out to @AndyLeiser@danvkoch for amusing, inspiring, and showing us the way! YES AND #AppleEDUchat We are super charged to sketch, take notes, create, and take over the world
A6: I’ve got a course on da Vinci & engineering coming up. Going to use Ss sketchnoting as an approach for them to get into his head, see the world as he did. I am soooo psyched for this #AppleEduChat#EveryonecanCreate
LOL - truth. Someday I will have one. I cannot wait. Until then - I’ll create with my fingers, cheap stylus, and anything I can to share our story. #AppleEDUchat
A6 Students thrive and grow through drawing! It is one of the first things they learn to do so they are confident in their drawing skills & love using iPads to create it. #AppleEDUchat#EveryoneCanCreate#ADE2018
A6: I would encourage because it absolutely changed the way I take notes for the better. I remember much more & enjoy meetings/PD so much more when I sketchnote! As an art teacher I like introducing it so Ss know the possibilities, and Ts see the benefits! #AppleEDUchat
As we wind down, I want to thank everyone for joining us for #AppleEDUchat and sharing your awesome with us! And of course, @AndyLeiser for being the co-host with the most!
A pleasure and an honor - thanks for lending your sketches, animations, and voice to the #AppleEDUchat conversation. Now… get out here and create - #EveryoneCanCreate
