I think I am more thinking about interviews and interview questions both as a teacher and from an administrative candidate. AT least thats been weighing on my mind. #idedchat
I had one "Your morning isn't going as planned. You have 2 teachers out, a student in the main office, and disgruntled parents in your office. What do you tackle first, and why?" #idedchat
I would also have a game plan for teachers in need of improvement. Both admin jobs I had resulted in teachers on improvement plans and ultimately resulted in teachers resigning. #IDedchat
Yes, I am really wondering about how to balance the new research and trends with student behavior (trauma informed, connect before correct, etc.) with a high standards for behavior. #IDedchat
Jim, don’t lower your expectations for students. We need to be informed that our Ss have lots going on in their lives. We need to show empathy; however, showing empathy does not mean having low expectations. #IDedchat
We have changed our schoolwide standards for behavior. A frequent message from one of our trainers is "kids will do the best they can at that time." It has added a lot of ambiguity into our expectations. #IDedchat
So I know I will get everything done that needs to be done; however, I stress out about it. I always do the stress out thing. I really don’t try to show that I am stressed, but I am a little bit. #IDedchat
It's an offshoot of the @youcubed project out of Stanford. The idea is to use open-ended tasks that get kids to think visually about big ideas in math. There are books with tasks for grades 3-6. #IDedchat
I think (my opinion) that we still have the same expectations for kids. Where disciple comes in, we can have punitive consequences or we can make it a learning experience. This is where empathy comes in. #IDedchat
Great leaders try not to show that they are stressed. They want to lead and see things accomplished no matter how much work it takes. I applaud you and your work ethic! #idedchat
Oh good viewpoint. I think we all fall into those tendencies. If there isn't stress, why worry kind of mindset. So if there is a higher stress level then there is a sense of "urgency" or desire to complete it? Maybe? #idedchat
I don’t think I’m ADD; maybe OCD. My obsession is trying to do things that are going to help my Ss and the school community. I also have a hard time saying no. I might be getting a little better at delegating things. #IDedchat
Empathy is key the key word there. High expectations are important-but we do have to remember that equity (even with discipline/ behavior) doesn’t mean “same.” #IDedchat
Kids like to use the word “fair”. I let my kids know the fair happens down the street (my school is a couple miles from our state fairgrounds) in August. #IDedchat#FairNotEqual
Can you give some examples of learning experiences with discipline?
Some of our trainings have me (and my colleagues) very confused on the line between learning experiences and consequences #IDedchat
At the elementary level, we're having a hard time with students understanding equity does not mean same. When one student gets a snack and a break following inappropriate behavior, it's hard for many kids to understand where the line is. #IDedchat
A kid is talking in class. Maybe using inappropriate language or using 1:1 device inappropriately. You still discipline/not ignore it. However, instead of writing the child up, you pull into the hallway and look at ways to rectify it. It’s not about consequences. #IDedchat
From my perspective (sorry to barge in) consequences are when there needs to be a form of punishment for something more severe. Learning experiences are opportunities for students to grow and try to not have the habit repeated in the future. Where do you draw the line? #idedchat
That makes sense. How would you handle it if it happens repeatedly?
This week I told three students they could not use Chromebooks for independent reading (for one week) because they repeatedly misused them. #IDedchat
I think you have to look at the factors that go into the behavior. Did the Ss have a death in the family? Was there a fight at home last night? Was (S)he taking care of siblings all night? Again, we need to look at the whole child with empathy. #IDedchat
Harder for some adults to understand. I cant change my oil or weld, others can. I can teach kid how to shoot a basketball. We all have different skills & different needs &we all start in different spots. Must have Maslow before Blooms can happen! #IDedchat

I was a big believer in most of what I read about discipline with empathy. Now that we're putting it into practice, it's a really bumpy road. #IDedchat
Here’s a thought. What if the Ss had to create a presentation using their Chromebooks on how to use their Chromebooks appropriately instead of inappropriately? #IDedchat
I have a group this semester of kids who didn’t have great success first semester. They are all over the place with skill set and behavior. I could write kids up daily. My goal is to encourage them. Focus them. These are kids that are 14-17 year old. #IDedchat

Sometimes these kids were never given a chance. It’s time they get that chance. Have someone believe in them. If I can plant a seed and nurture it, maybe it might grow. #IDedchat

That can be tough to try and accomplish depending on the number of students. But the age range definitely is a tough one given the varying maturity levels. #idedchat
