#caedchat is for California educators, by California educators. All are welcome as moderators and participants discuss issues that emerge in California education, which are generally applicable to other regions of the United States.
Let’s take a moment to introduce ourselves. Where are you from? What do you do for work? What is the most powerful piece of art you’ve ever seen in person? #caedchat

My name is Shawn Wisley, I’m an Assistant Principal in Selma, CA (originally from San Diego). I got to see “Guernica” in Madrid. I figure I should do this chat because people are always telling me I’m a piece of work. They mean art, right? #caedchat
Scott Petri HS History teacher from So Cal. Love Washington Crossing the Delaware https://t.co/E3UzzAwxA1 Hard not to be wowed by the rotunda in our nation's capital #caedchat
My name is Renee Newlove, I teach 8th grade ELA in Selma, CA. This year I became the VAPA Coordinator. I was able to commission a piece of art from my favorite Fresno muralist and I gave him 100% artistic license. It is my favorite and most moving piece of work. #caedchat
Steph, a 5th grade teacher from #PLUSD, checking in for #caedchat. The most powerful art I've seen in person was Cirque Du Soleil in Macau. The art people can make with their bodies is breathtaking!
Leila here Deputy Superintendent for the Escondido Union School District. I’ve seen too many amazing pieces my latest art adventure was @mcachicago#caedchat
Rick Stevens from San Francisco area. Now consultant and coach after 25 years in K-12. Dali was my most enduring inspiration. Growing up near New York City, lots of access to museums. #caedchat#art
Hi #caedchat friends! Amanda, Innovation TOSA, here from Campbell, CA. Just returned from my 4th trip to Austin and the street art there always makes a huge impression on me!
A1: I think about music, theatre, drawing, and digital arts. I try to use art in my bible study classes. I have the kids make things or sing. I've yet to do some kind of theatre activity. #caedchat
A1: When I think arts in edu I think about Ss creating, analyzing and generally learning about physical arts, music, digital media, etc. I tried integrating art creation & analysis into most major units in my class throughout the year #caedchat
A1: Fortunate that our district provides professionals to come in and teach students the arts, including ballroom dancing for 2nd graders. :) #toocute#CAedchat
A1: I think about things like music drama and the fine arts being present in lessons. I try to have my students create something "art" related in all units. #caedchat
A1) I think of art as letting your imagination run wild! Being able to have opportunities to do meaningful craft, drama, music and even being able to learn about the artists, musicians and inventors of our time! #caedchat
A1: When I think arts in edu I think about Ss creating, analyzing and generally learning about physical arts, music, digital media, etc. I tried integrating art creation & analysis into most major units in my class throughout the year #caedchat
A1: I think about #art as the ability to create and alter perception, inspiration, symmetry, beauty. When I taught elementary, art was integral to lesson & projects. Same as when I taught HS English. Of course, integral part of teaching multimedia. #caedchat
A1: When I was in the classroom, I used to have an Artist of the Month (e.g. Monet, Renoir, Seurat). We'd learn about the artist's background, style, and then do a project in that artistic style. #CAedchat
A1 I think about letting SS create their own art. This means painting, drawing, dancing, ballet, miming, acting & so much more. Art is creativity & expression. I try to turn learning into art & have ss express themselves & their learning through art. #caedchat
A1: in my HS Spanish classroom, I incorporated art appreciation (exposure) and also introduced my students to many (to them) foreign music styles. Occasionally danced with them, too (a colleague was a ballroom competitor who taught salsa) #CAedchat
Arts in the Classroom involves more than drawing, painting, etc. It is music, dancing, singing, drama, etc. I'm proud to say that #rdoelementary has both a music and art teacher! #PLESD#caedchat
A1 Arts Education can be an artistic production (art piece, performance, etc) as well as learning about the conventions of the art medium. Arts Education can be learning about Art or enhancing other subjects with artistic means for comprehension. #CAedchat
A1cont: I’m lucky to work in a district that places great importance on arts in edu— excited to see all Ss in @campbellusd getting exposure to art in some way every year #caedchat
A1: I have been a fierce advocate for the arts. Our district has opportunities for students to engage in band, chorus, fine arts and in one school we have dance opportunities. Not nearly enough. #caedchat
A2 Love doing wordplay assignments in my #casocstudies classes. Blackout poetry, 6 word definitions, retell a historical event in rhyming couplets. https://t.co/5zHA19NWx9#caedchat
A1: When I think about arts in education I think about projects related to content already being covered, and sprinkling #creativity into lessons to allow students to take ownership of learning #caedchat
A2: at our MS, we don’t have designated time for arts, but we do offer electives in Visual, Performing, Culinary, and Media Arts. We have a (fairly) new district #VAPA Coordinator; classroom impact yet unknown #CAedchat
A1: I think about exposing students to all the varieties of art so that they can see the influence of the classics in modern/pop art. I’ve used a podcast about the Star Wars music of John Williams to teach allusion and tone. #caedchat
I know that at one@of our elementary schools, @hilz2teach does her best to infuse art into all areas of the curriculum! She also has an amazing after school art club #caedchat
A1: I'd say somewhat. Lot's of making/creativity. We do Soundation & a DJ site using a usb midi keyboard. Not really painting or drawing. I did Art Robotics last summer. Kind of all or nothing. #caedchat

Looking to build “brand awareness” for your new department, initiative, program or district?
Come to Primrose B, 3/15 3:30-4:30 and well show you our wins & fails in building #AlisalStrong with fun and human connections. @EdTechSpec@NewImpulse#caedchat
A2: We have a music teacher and art teacher with designated times for artistic expression and development. Our partnership with @PacificSymphony through the Class Act program gives Ts tools to incorporate classical music into their classes!
#caedchat
A2: Currently we do not have designated arts instruction/instructors. At the MS/HS we have arts electives. SUSD is currently in their first year of adopting the Any Given Child Initiative with The Kennedy Center, I am the #VAPA Coordinator for this program. #CAedchat
A2: I recently attended a student showcase @SanDiegoCOE in which professional actors acted out the short plays the students authored. That was cool.
#caedchat
A2: My district does not have a specific arts implementation, most school sites have an art teacher but it seems to be cut quickly when budget cuts come around. 😞 I wish we did. The arts connect with so many students, sometimes esp. those who struggle academically. #caedchat
A1: We need to learn to value the arts as a stand alone. We shouldn’t have to justify it by integrating it in to content areas we value. This doesn’t mean I don’t think we can or should integrate #caedchat
A2: At the high school level in my district, we don’t have this. If I am to incorporate the arts in my classroom, I reach out to our arts Ts, but their job is to teach, not spend their one precious prep period collaborating with staff. They are willing to collaborate. #caedchat
A2: Once a week, all students at #rdoelementary get 50 minutes with our art teacher or music teacher. (Music is the first half of the year and art is the second half of the year.) This builds Ss creativity and ability to express themselves. #PLESD#caedchat
A2: My school doesn't have an arts instructor, yet. I feel that that may end up being me to some extent, because I am a creative person. I know that I would like to teach interior design at my school. It may be a trade, but nonetheless it's still an art. #caedchat
A2: We have a dedicated art, drama and music teacher. Only 1 is credentialed. All 3 work with the grade levels to incorporate what we are learning about in their lessons. #caedchat
A2: At my site our Artful Learning units, which follow the Experience, Inquire, Create, and Reflect process, incorporate our ELA, SS, and Science standards. We also have different Artist partners who work with us for a trimester. #caedchat
A2: My school will most likely be outsourcing our music program and directing students to a music school. Although I know violin and cello, I can't teach it because I never diligently practiced when I was a child! As a small school, we can only afford to do what we can #caedchat
A2: One of our district focuses is #STEAM integration We partner w/@montalvoarts to provide all 2nd gr Ss art instruction w/resident artists, most sites also have an art and/or music T for other grade lvls AND most Ts maintain some type art, drama, music in classes #caedchat
I think it is a part of differentiated instruction as well, allowing students to experience the material in different ways and allowing them to express their understanding in different ways. #caedchat
Inviting artists was an idea my director was considering. There is an artist named Bumblebeelovesyou that we would like to invite. This artist does a lot of children's oriented art. Very modern! #caedchat
A3: I try to put art into my lessons, sometimes all that means is allowing students to doodle while they listen to a story or work. Sometimes a creative project. We also do a lot of visualizing and drawing in math in 2/3rd grade. If I don't- usually b/c of time. #caedchat
A2: My kinders also get to go to Art class once a week with an Art teacher. Their current artist partner is connecting our learning about Interactions (cause and effect, push and pull, etc.) with Wintergarten's Marble Machine.
https://t.co/wPJ9gMyn8W#caedchat
A3: I start my Bible study off with a song every time. I try to incorporate crafts and differentiated instruction when I can. The ideal for me is to do something art-related everyday. #caedchat
I try and have kids draw and express their thinking in different ways. conceptual models are a big way to use art. Other than that I don't incorporate too much art into my science classes
#CAedchat
A3: Art is not in my daily lesson plans, but I’m building an art lesson in every unit I teach in class. I like to give my Ss options so they are comfortable with interacting with whichever medium they choose. I have to be very intentional with adding in Arts. #CAedchat
A3 giving SS choice in how they express their learning, acting out vocabulary words, kid zumba for P.E. minutes, art projects that go with ELA, Math, Science & IB Units, hands on activities and etc. #caedchat
A3: I work hard to dispel the myth that art is the ability to draw. When Ss and Ts see #makered and multimedia creation as art it opens up a whole new can of wonder. #caedchat
A3: I used to love to bring art into my social studies lessons by having students create their own drawings to help them remember the content. I called them flowcharts notes. https://t.co/F91VwbSZTj#CAedchat
A3: Here’s the thing... music isn’t something you can teach well if you haven’t studied it, same with art, music, dance, theatre. It takes a level of expertise that the generalist just doesn’t posses. We need to have experts in each school #caedchat
A3: I try to add it in, with my grade-level team, where it fits in with our curriculum. This is our first year with a new textbook, so our art integration has been minimal, but I’ve done more this year than in past years. #caedchat
A2: district has art teachers... there isn’t yet a confirmed program or set of standards addressed... I think since common core... subjects such as arts, technology, sciences will come much more into play... that being said, art, holds so much expressive importance! #caedchat
what do you think of arts integration where we use arts to enhance interest and engagement, offer other points of entry for key topics/themes? #caedchat
A3: As a history teacher I try and expose the Ss to different types of art throughout history. Ex: We look at the great Renaissance artist and they describe why they think these paintings influence people. #caedchat
I incorporate art into science classes. Also have old school botany, anatomy and wildlife specimen drawings in class as a reminder that art and science have long been connected #CAedchat
A3: I teach math and science, so art is not in everything I do, but I try to find creative ways for students to show their knowledge. Every year, we do material resources using cartoon characters and their clothing. #CAedchat
I wouldn’t presume to “teach music” but I’ve done lessons in which we discussed features of music that fit with topics under discussion. Analyzing a painting can help Ss develop approaches and lang. that transfer to lit. analysis #caedchat
I think that’s great. We can examine all aspects of the human condition through the arts. History, science, math, culture. I just want it valued for it’s own sake as well. I believe engaging in the arts grows our 🧠 andour ❤️ #caedchat
I agree. I don't feel confident enough to teach art exclusively. I've taken art classes in college, so I am familiar with the well-known and some of the not-so-well-known artists. I could rely on that knowledge to get by, but it is not extensive enough imo. #caedchat
We do not have full time arts teachers, art and music are contracted out and done in two sessions over the course of the year to the teachers who want it #CAedchat
A4: Some of my students have been interested in the drawing feature on @Seesaw. I'm interested to know what other tools are out there for primary/elementary students to create digitally. #caedchat
A4: I am working on having my Ss complete book trailers utilizing #WeVideo. We will need to talk about video design, content of the video, and other aspects. We will watch trailers (movie and books) to help guide my Ss to understanding what they need to do. #CAedchat
I had students create pop-ups of the Bible Creation narrative. It really brought out some amazing talent in these students. https://t.co/TfSXeYd9YR#caedchat
Student examples of a Creation story pop-up the kids did for bible study. I came up with the idea and if I did it differently, I'd have it as a part of the regular school curriculum rather than 2x a week bible study. #edchat#caedchat
A3: Some of my fave integrated projects include art based on work of Langston Hughes & intro to the Blues as part of ELA unit, geometry art (tessellations & spiral art), #coding spiral art, grade level plays... #CAedchat#K12ArtChat
That’s a serious equity issue - so much good comes from a robust arts education, and those who might need it most seem least likely to get it #caedchat
We do not have full time arts teachers, art and music are contracted out and done in two sessions over the course of the year to the teachers who want it #CAedchat
A3: pretty much everything I create within my learning experiences ... represents some type of art... Google Drawings, representative sketches in journals, and Friday art days drive our classroom with expression and individualism! #caedchat
A4 teaching SS how to use different technology tools allows them to use art digitally. They can create on @Seesaw@AdobeSpark@Buncee@DoInkTweets@padlet@Google & so much more. They learn how to use the tools & then they create. Constantly doing this in 1st grade. #caedchat
A4: I’m looking for ways to improve our students’ public presence (@almseagles on Twitter and Instagram, blog, student newsletter, YouTube channel). Some of these exist, others need to be created. All with an eye for excellence! #CAedchat
Art is great because it can mean different things to different people. Ss need to see that there opinion can be correct even if it is not the same as everyone else’s.#caedchat
I’m biased but try @teamdoceri Designed for the teacher but my students love to create, draw, manipulate photos, and create screencasts with it. #caedchat
In reply to
@kaylabryant2424, @Seesaw, @teamdoceri
A4: Illustrated story-telling (AKA comic books, Manga, etc.) and photo-journalism provide for great opportunities for integration of digital media. Ss can use iPads, Chromebooks or computers. Lots of flexibility #caedchat
A3: to say I do art daily would be a stretch, however I have been using it in at least 50% of the time. Kids LOVE creating and being creative. I probably don’t add it in more just because I’m not sure how! #caedchat
A4: Digital storytelling; using BookCreator, Gimp, or Paint to create stories or make posters; creating models or buildings through Sketchup; photo editing/manipulation; even making video games online. The possibilities are endless with digital art! #caedchat
A4: I've been using Scratch to create models in science. They use code to give some type of feedback. I have a 5th gr S making a movie on full inclusion. #caedchat.
A4: Digital art is probably one of the most easily accessible to our tech savvy kiddos! 3D designs on @tinkercad ... advertisements on @canva ... even cartoon making on @scratch !!! Getting their designs and images out there to share with the digital world. #caedchat
In reply to
@newlove4edu, @tinkercad, @canva, @scratch
A4- Here is a blanket example of 4 different SS in 1st grade using art to demonstrate their learning of spelling & high frequency words using different digital tools! #caedchat
A5: Arts Integration is a lesson that informs Ss on both a Core subject standards as well as an Arts standard. Arts enhanced is when a lesson uses art to further engage Ss. STEAM uses every component of STEAM to guide Ss inquiry, dialogue, & critical thinking. #CAedchat
A4: oh man, I love using media in my classroom. We do so much in slides and I almost always encourage Ss to insert bitmojis, shapes and new color/font schemes #caedchat
A4: Digital storytelling; using BookCreator, Gimp, or Paint to create stories or make posters; creating models or buildings through Sketchup; photo editing/manipulation; even making video games online. The possibilities are endless with digital art! #caedchat
A4: I LOVE integrating video production into elem classes! We’ve done stop motion in math to visualize concepts, video biographies, PSAs, and more! #caedchat
A5 Arts are often the first thing cut out of schools :( That should not be. So as Ts we need to integrate art into our classrooms. STEAM is STEM with Arts. #caedchat
A5: I think arts integration is using art alongside other content areas. To me STEAM is basically creating/inventing/finding solutions, not necessarily traditional art you'd think of right away. I'm not sure I've heard of arts enhancement. #caedchat
Q3 drawing/sketching/painting/sculpting incorporated into science and social studies. Music and theater into ELA. Dance into social studies and PE. Also drawing for fine motor skill practice for my RTI kids #caedchat
I love the idea of incorporating comic books! I used to write comics in class when I was in high school in college. Unfortunately, they usually were not about the lesson. #caedchat
A5 I'm embarrassed to say as a science teacher I have little understanding. I know the A stands for art but that's not my thing. We have had no PD on such a thing. I wonder if new adopted NGSS curriculum will have this component #caedchat
A4: Ss need access to tech while working in class in any subject, ideally. So, they can get new ideas, research relevant images & so they can use their digital knowledge to create images, diagrams & ART that reflects what they have learned or what they want to say! #caedchat
Same. As an elem T it’s already my job to teach literacy, ELA, math, sci, history, PE... arts are just another core part of my class & nice there are standards to help guide us. Tough to have so much, but all important to me in my classroom #caedchat
One thing I’ve noticed in 7 years as an administrator is that Arts Ts really do have it going on. Engaged and authentic environments where Ss are working in different places at different paces #TheyCanTeachUsSomething#CAedchat
If you are near Escondido join us at this event Saturday. Our entire district will be sharing our value for the arts at the annual SmART festival https://t.co/ycFuOWVulA#caedchat
Is it always necessary to incorporate art? Or can you incorporate just different ways for students to learn? Maybe try looking at the Multiple Intelligences for ideas. #caedchat
If you are near Escondido join us at this event Saturday. Our entire district will be sharing our value for the arts at the annual SmART festival https://t.co/ycFuOWVulA#caedchat
Here is an awesome guide on the different multiple intelligences and a bunch of activities you can use to apply them for every subject! You might find some inspiration. :) https://t.co/FhXLYBFmSH#caedchat
I definitely need to look at the arts standards more. I mostly focus on expressing ourselves through art with our IB unit and integrating arts into curriculum, but haven't really looked at the arts standards the way I look at other common core standards! #caedchat
I will be at #CUE18 too! Presenting a session on @Seesaw & AppSmashing for SS choice. Lots of arts and STEM integration ideas! Are you presenting a session? #caedchat
A6: I need more PD on actual Arts Integration. Anchor lessons to facilitate arts integration in the classroom would also be beneficial. There needs to be time to tap the experts on each campus to help true integration to happen. #CAedchat
Love the response! Question: Are the Arts something we should teach? Or can we simply encourage & create the conditions & step aside & admire? #CAedchat
A6: Knowledge. Time. Money. What’s new? Site and district leaders need to fight to get these resources for their teachers. If we better meet teacher needs, they can better meet student needs! #CAedchat
A6 (cont): I am building a matrix so I can see my standards next to the arts standards which should help me integrate them a lot more. I can be more effective in my unit planning as well #caedchat
A6: Honestly though, I feel pretty ready to integrate more art into my teaching. This is a great resource for learning about new ideas/tools from other educators. Besides the time and money I mostly just need fresh ideas. 🍍#caedchat
I am teaching an art class and a science class we made animal cells with plaster gauge and paper clay. As we painted the organelles we whole group watched a video animation of the functions, wrote notes, painted, and labeled the organelles. #caedchat
A6 I collect things- plastic bottles, paper towel rolls, cardboard boxes, egg cartons, scrap paper & etc. 4 recycling can be used 4 so many projects! Paint, paper, paintbrushes, robots, lego walls, collage materials & etc. but mostly creative spaces. Anything can B used #caedchat
Great q! IMO, both. Create conditions for Ss to be creative, yes, but also give them the skills they may not otherwise handle or know of w/out instruction or exposure #caedchat
In reply to
@PrincipalDurham, @carrie_linden, @CohenD
A5: I see Arts integration as a way to bring in a student’s knowledge of the digital arts into #STEAM or 20% Projects. Also, as a backdoor entrance into learning for artistic kids who feel intimidated by science or math. #caedchat
Its a powerful thing to make room for. I love when T leave room for art to be evidence of content knowledge. I’ve had some amazing raps, songs, short films and short stories turned in by elm and MS kids over the years #caedchat
A6 Please be kind 🤣 But I think we just need the permission& willingness to set somethings down. I know I’m just an administrator, but it crushes me to see Ts work so hard on things that don’t have an #impact on Ss outcomes #caedchat
A6: We take part in a LOT of Artful Learning professional development, from summer trainings to participating as teachers in Arts Based Skills and Strategies, VTS, etc at every staff meeting. We also take part in grade-level artful learning unit development regularly. #caedchat
I'm dreaming big! But, yes, I already know. I've let the director know more than once that we need staff, staff, and more staff. I know I can't do everything, even if we are starting small. #caedchat
If you can teach it then both is ideal, if you can’t teach it then sometimes simply encouraging it works for me. Don’t let our limitations be theirs #caedchat#PrepareSsForTheirTomorrow
A7: I have a handful of Ss who are in dance classes or a community theatre group, their performance in class is more academic than Ss who are not. The 4 Cs are blended throughout various art mediums and this helps Ss succeed in core subject areas. #CAedchat
A6 I am also very lucky to be part of a school that has a partnership with our local theatre. We go on field trips to the theatre to see different forms of art & participate in Aesthetic Ed. #caedchat
A7: I’m sad to say that in Selma, it’s not much. Unless you count popular music as art (I know, there’s an argument). That’s one of the reasons it’s so vitally important to provide access and expusure at school! #CAedchat
A6: My students have varying degrees of exposure to the arts outside of school. I think this depends a lot on socioeconomic status, location, extra-curriculars, family size/schedule etc.! I think it helps students to make connections with texts/other subjects. #caedchat
I'm just thinking about the future. That's my vision, and I definitely see the involvement of other people in that future. For now, just starting small and taking it slow. :D #caedchat
2 years ago I taught History. We studied Mezo America, class is made up of mostly kids w/ Mexican roots. The moved through Spanish conquest, French, and American of Mexico to Chicano movement. This is what we came up with. #caedchat
A7: My students have varying degrees of exposure to the arts outside of school. I think this depends a lot on socioeconomic status, location, extra-curriculars, family size/schedule etc.! I think it helps students to make connections with texts/other subjects. #caedchat
A7 Yes! We have a partnership with the @McCallumTheatre and participate in Aesthetic Education. We are going on our 3rd field trip to the theatre next week actually. One of my SS wants 2 be a designer & is already designing clothes in 1st grade. Very blessed. #caedchat
I proved materials, guided skills practice, time to practice freely on their own and examples of how art can relate to school subjects. Then I let them play. They never fail to come up with something that I wasn’t expecting but that relates beautifully. #caedchat
Please join me thanking @Newlove4Edu for stepping up to the plate to HOST in what was actually her first Twitter chat ever! She's the #VAPA coordinator in Selma, CA, an extraordinary #ELA teacher, and an award-winning thespian (oh, and #gamerbabe and huge @SFGiants fan) #caedchat
Art is a powerful tool for students to create an exemplar of their learning. If art is truly integrated, its' creation can be a direct reflection of the content Ss are learning, their understanding of the content, and their own connection/interpretation of the content.
A7: My Ss have very limited interaction/experience with the arts outside the classroom. I think if they had more interaction with the arts AND artists/makers they’d be more creative. #caedchat@newlove4edu
A7: I have a lot of students who are not exposed to art in a formal setting. Ts have to get better at making Ss see the art that is all around them. #caedchat
