I'm Sam and I teach 6th ELA in Waukegan, Illinois
Hi Anne! Your chat tomorrow looks interesting!
We use a Q1/A1 and Q2/A2 format! Feel free to ask additional questions as needed!
Leigh Anne from Indiana. ELA and tweeting tonight while watching The Voice!
Thanks! Excited! And your topic looks great tonight!
Hi Sam! Welcome! Hope you are having a great week! Thanks for being here!
Be sure to share about the topic for tomorrow night here during our !
Hola Returning after a week hiatus due to Back to School Night last week. Phil, from NJ ready to rock and roll
A1) Compliance focused classrooms put Ss in passive, memorizing roles; Innovative classes push Ss to ask ?s & find solutions
We miss your thinking when you're gone! Glad to have you back!
Compliance focused is doing what your told and doing bare min. Innovation is going above and beyond to interest Ss
A1. Compliance is teacher talking. Innovation is ss collaboration.
Yes! Key words "to interest Ss" Relevance and authenticity matter. https://t.co/7TR3cVR575

Ever watch a youth bball team? What happens players look at coach. Thats compliance. Players look at each other, thats innovation.
A1: Compliance Classrooms, to me, is doing the same old way its always been done, while Inno. would be a classroom of risk-takers.
I think compliance-based has pretty defined roles for students. Innovation has fluid roles.
Thank you! Glad to be back,
A1. I read a quote on Twitter. The less T talk the more ss learn.
Learning to listen is a challenge for many Ts. https://t.co/kD2PTHQ8lm

Perfect illustration of compliance vs innovation. Thanks for sharing your thinking here! https://t.co/UeQey7m3BC

A1: When I teach coding, there are so many Ss teaching each other,so many choices Ss have in product, closest I come to innovation.
A2: Love the graphic, Kristin! CHOICE!
A2) Key indicators inc. Ts facilitating, Ss leading, Ts concerned w/process over content expectations; collaboration is key.
A2: Choice! Passion! New Ideas! Risks!
A2: 1 Key indicator would be classroom environment (posters, seating, student work)
A2. I give ss choices and let them do their own learning with some guidance. Choices are key.
Pesky little #...it is a powerful thing isn't it?
Compliance is always top down. Many ways we recognize compliance vs problem solve. Most SOW are rewarded for complience.
Letting ss get stuck and not rushing to help
Haven't heard of it. Less questions? Is it adaptive?
A2. Today ss were making travel brochures. I showed them some examples but let them create and try new ideas.
As I check in math HW I check to see if ss are understanding if an answer is off I grab a ss who got it and he helps
Perfect! So glad you are here....is your year improving?
A2. Its about ss ownership.
little by little improving, but I can't really relax yet...going for our first mystery hangout, so nervous
Was asked long to teach to S. 5 min to download and 2 weeks for S experts to lead. I only assign.
A3) Requires Ts to release control, teach process to Ss & Ts need to manage the many paths Ss may need to meet individual goals
A3: 1 challenge I have is getting Ss to reach point where they are in charge of own learning and want to learn independently
A3= challenge happens when school admin is dependent on State Testing and ss don't do well on it...
A3 Chaos, controlled chaos, but chaos. Willingness to follow S lead. Hard for most Ts. Why I cant have subs.
A3: T's giving up some control and Ss rising to the challenge to take control of their own learning.
A3. Ss don't get the same learning in compliant classrooms than in innovation classrooms. Its a disservice.
I think so few have been pushed to do this that is almost like learning a foreign language & fearful of trying it out
Agree you always have those ss who want everything handed to them including the learning
I find it easier to have subs because the ss run the class themselves...
Speaking my language...engaged chaos
yep I am under the microscope in my district because my ss didn't do so well on the test last year :(
Total bummer, cause that's more work for you!
I can't "like" this one or "heart" it. So sorry that you feel that way; keep doing what's best for Ss!
A4) Gradual release where Ts teach the process of asking Qs to Ss using inquiry based thinking; can't just "expect" Ss to do this
I totally agree, but until then I must be somewhat compliant :( and I hate it.
A4: Digital tools. With the inclusion of digital tools the quiet Ss can still be involved and Ss can look up any ? they have
A4. Ss have to be comfortable asking ?s. And they have to accept finding answers on their own...with guidance.
A4 Model and train. Must give S permission to try an to fail, then reflect. Reflection sooo key.
I don't feel that way at all I was told that my test scores were awful and had to meet with Superintendent...
More work to have a sub. LOVE being with my kiddos.
I am trying to...just feel like I have to walk a fine line..
I am self-contained I teach it all!
I TOTALLY agree I HATE taking days off...way too much work to make sub plans.
A5) Keeping the Qs of "how did you do" & "why do you think" & other self-reflection Qs in front of Ss. Role model this behavior.
Huge in my class was to develop "minigoals" for day. What I plan to get done. Reflect at end of day, "why didnt this happen?"
A5: Showing that they are reflective learners and what they do to reflect
I used a back channel while ss watched a video, it was great to watch all ss be involved.
Where do Ss put these goals and reflections? Digital? Notebook? Interested.
Have you used ? Another great interactive opp for Ss and you.
Start off w/ sticky notes on front of comp, transition to google calander as year progresses and projects longer.
I need to do this one more, don't practice this one enough.
Just wanted to chime in and announce I love
A6) Start w/high-interest innovation focus practices such as Genius Hour, but then move inquiry and PBL to other content areas
A6: Think like an S, if it doesn't seem like something that will get you interested it likely won't work for your Ss either
I will be using this one next week as I read PAX for . Your work is amazing here!
A7) Have Ss share learning projects w/Ps; we had a tech open house w/Ss showing Ps tech projects, makerspaces & more
A7: you mentioned PBL which would benefit from bringing in parents and community members to help and provide info
AMAZING! Awesome work! Mind if I use it or parts of it?
please use all that you need. Using it for the global read aloud that begins next week!
I have a bunch of hyper docs I love using them and seeing what kids create.
A7: Wouldlove to mine all the parental talent and engage Ps in the lessons themselves-another way to break down theclassroom walls.
A8) Want to try the mini-goals idea with a check in at end of day.
A8 Stop bothering me with questions. Im looking at
Bowing out a little early tonight. Lots to do before I fall asleep standing up. Thanks for a great chat as usual
A8: I want to do more having Ss help each other to complete tasks to share ownership in classroom
Thanks to all who shared their thinking tonight...always good to be with you and the inspiration you bring to
Thank you for all the work you do putting this together, Kristin. I know it takes a lot of time!!!
So cool! Rule to ask 3 before me. Love having experts on everything from Google classroom to ea part of math.
That one time when you totally missed because you're on the phone talking shop with your teaching partner. :)
Bummer! Hope to see you next week!
