Our goals are to connect grads and current students, share ideas and advice, and be inspired. #ElonEd chat brings together experienced teachers and novice teachers to discuss best practices. We see our chat as a way to mentor future teachers who are students at Elon, and anyone who wants to join us in that effort is welcome.
Welcome to the #ElonEd chat! Our goals are to connect grads, current students, fac/staff, and other educators to share ideas and advice and to be inspired. #edtech
I believe that the purpose of #edtech is to transform the learning experience. Educational technology offers teaching and learning opportunities that would otherwise not exist without the use of technology. #ElonEd
A1: The SAMR model is often used as a framework for evaluating the ways in which #edtech can be implemented into the classroom: https://t.co/czq6fCyHnz. The goal is to redefine learning, as opposed to simply substituting aspects of the learning experience with technology. #ElonEd
I love that. I also think about how #edtech should be used in a way that enhances our instruction instead of as a substitute for pencil and paper activities. #ElonEd
A1: tech in ed provides innovative strategies for engaging students, making their thinking visible, and giving kids a voice. It enhances the strong pedagogy already in place with good teachers! #eloned
A1 if tech is used to help students reach a greater depth of transferable learning and to help teachers extend beyond their comfort zones to provide pathways of choice and connection, then we're doing it right #ElonEd
A1: I agree with @jeffpcarpenter there are many purposes for edtech, it depends on who you ask (admin, vendors, politicians, educators, students) #ElonEd
A2 Tech in education allows for students to practice 21st century skills such as research, and incorporating speaking and listening standards @Flipgrid that are not always touched upon in every day lessons. #ElonEd
A2. Good old To Kill A Mockingbird skills - to get in somebody else’s shoes and see the world from their perspective. So many ways to get students interacting with supposed “others” #eloned
A2) literacy (information, tech, media, digital), tech skills, employability skills (e.g., how to use tech to collaborate, engage in self-directed learning, and communicate) #ElonEd
Using #edtech, students should gain skills that will expand their expressions of learning, make their learning visible (yes @erinhone712), and assist them in navigating THEIR futures; all the Cs (and then some) working in a flexible concert #ElonEd
A2: using #peardeck has made all students in the classroom have a voice and allow them to see how others are thinking and making connections to their learning! #ElonEd
A2 digital citizenship & literacy, responsible usage, the permanence your online footprint…ideally these skills would translate into their personal use of tech! #ElonEd
I have seen so many great teachers using tech to showcase their students’ thinking and giving students a chance to think about others thinking. Skills we desperately need in today’s world - understanding others’ perspectives. #ElonEd
A2: Tech can be used to engage in the 4 (or 5) C's, but on a much grander (and more meaningful) scale. Creativity shared w/ a wider audience, communication with people all over the world, critical thinking to solve real problems, collaboration without walls. #ElonEd
A3 @pauldallison mentioned using the #SAMR to evaluate the use of #edtech before diving in…I wonder where we find ourselves falling most of the time? #ElonEd
A3 Ts should consider WHY they're using #edtech - is it a distracting sparkle that will fill time or is there an explicit purpose that will result in transferable learning for Ss? If Ts are unsure, reach out & collaborate with others to expand opportunities for Ss #ElonEd
A3) Educators should consider accessibility, access, ease of use, type of learning the edtech supports (e.g., behaviorist vs constructionism), input/output (how students will be able show their learning via the tool), cost, privacy, student data #ElonEd
A3: Evaluate what the technology has to offer to the learning experience. I’m a Computer Science teacher. I love technology. Sometimes, however, non-tech approaches are the best way to go. I believe that we need to avoid using technology for the sake of using technology. #ElonEd
A3: so much to consider: management of the tech, how to keep devices in view if necessary, is the tool effective?, ease of use and are the students learning? #ElonEd
A3: Will the addition of #edtech help to promote deeper understandings and skills than the lesson without tech? If so, how will you manage that? #ElonEd
A3 consider what the purpose is for using the #edtech be sure to know if Ss can access it when not in school, how will it enhance learning for Ss #ElonED
A3: I think sometimes we overlook the logistics of #edtech as well. How long will this take to model effectively before students use the tool themselves? Troubleshooting before you begin... What are some possible things that logistically may go wrong? #ElonEd
A3) Educators should consider accessibility, access, ease of use, type of learning the edtech supports (e.g., behaviorist vs constructionism), input/output (how students will be able show their learning via the tool), cost, privacy, student data #ElonEd
Jumping in on this chat!
A3: Be mindful of your students' access to technology at home. Also make sure the technology you're using adds purpose to and is enhancing your students' learning #ElonEd
A3: so much to consider: management of the tech, how to keep devices in view if necessary, is the tool effective?, ease of use and are the students learning? #ElonEd
A2 I want Ss to learn how to collaborate, communicate, be creative, build #digcit skills, connect globally, know how to find reliable info, be #FutureReady#ElonED
A4) One thing I love about edtech is the ability to quickly gather info from students (e.g., pre course survey) so that I can connect their interests to the content and enrich my relationship with Ss #ElonEd
A4: I really like this question. So often #edtech is considered only for learning and engagement. It can also be used for classroom culture and relationship building. Google docs allow students to collaborate, provide feedback, and build each other up. #ElonEd
A4 #edtech enables us to be available for Ss to access help or resources when they need, we can build relationships and learn about one another through collab, #blogging and for us with #pbl using @edmodo and @Flipgrid for #globaled and learning abt #SDGs#ElonED
A4: I use private comments in Google Classroom and comments in Google Docs to keep conversations going with students outside of class. I also hold virtual office hours where I keep their work open and they can chat while they’re revising/working. #ElonEd#GAFE#edtech
A4: builds relationships w students who might be more technology minded. Gives them an outlet that normally they wouldn’t have. This year I have students who give more effort and shine w technology based activities. #ElonEd
A4: #edtech provides the opportunity for students to take the drivers seat on their learning journey. We, as educators, can help to facilitate and guide this learning. #edtech brings the world to our classrooms - consider the many applications of virtual reality. #ElonEd
A4 the true use of edtech is to share knowledge. Expand past the walls of the classroom. Students can work together to share experiences that increases their relationships #ElonEd
Transform relationships with Ss using #edtech = equity, access, opportunity, voice, choice, transferable skills, preparation for next steps... it can go a long way in building trust with Ss, too
#ElonEd
A4: @class_harris and I filmed feedback videos on @Flipgrid for each individual student. They can also respond to their classmates which creates a community in the classroom. They love to see who has responded to their video! #ElonEd
A4 The use of collaborative tools that allow for immediate feedback provide information for both students and teachers....answers the why are we doing this question #ElonEd
A4: technology can be a wonderful resource for linking school and home life for Ss (emailing, online office hours, etc.) this can also help with developing relationships with parents #ElonEd
Just putting this out there: I am not a fan of students "doing research" as #edtech integration. So often they are not equipped with the knowledge and skills to research on their own. Research is a complicated endeavor. #ElonEd
A4: Conversations can be had before & after school hours, & there is good potential to use tech to improve relationships w/caregivers as well. Nothing will completely replace face to face communication and physically showing up at events, though. #ElonEd
A4: I also think digital materials are easily developed into contexts that are relevant and interesting to students. Variety of literature to share (more than a library may have in hard copy), math stories that are personal and real world, etc. #ElonEd

Research skills & resource evaluation must be taught. Collaborate with your librarian to teach this in an appropriate way--that's what we do. #ElonEd#ShamelessPlug

A lot of love for @Flipgrid tonight, which is great! I’m toying with using a tool called @useloom to give video/audio feedback on thesis rough drafts. This site lets me record my screen as I’m going through their work. #ElonEd
Also want to add that some Ts give students too much freedom of choice with "research" and, relatedly, #edtech. Sometimes focusing students is much better on specific knowledge and skills. Choice is not a magic elixir, and neither is #edtech. #ElonEd
A5: I have learned so many new teaching strategies and techniques through the use of technology! Twitter, blogs, online PD. Technology is a window into others’ classrooms! #eloned
A5: By taking the opportunity to explore #edtech with other teachers. Share ideas. Visit the classrooms of other teachers to see how they integrate technology into their teaching. Teaching is a learning profession. We learn and grow together! #ElonEd
A5: Google docs/slides etc. is one way to share documents with your grade level. Also twitter is a great resource to get research and articles to collaborate with other educators. #ElonEd
A5 transforming relationships with Ts using #edtech = broader perspectives, challenging personal learning, sharing successes (and growth opportunities), and connecting across the hall and the world #ElonEd
A5: excited that more in our district have decided to engage and grow their PLNs. Even two years ago, many weren't using Twitter they are today. #ElonEd
A5: I love learning from a wide variety of professionals with vastly different experiences, philosophies, and opinions. I would never be able to do that w/o tech. #ElonEd
That’s a great point! Edtech allows us to connect with diverse perspectives and ideas and people who might challenge our thinking (of course this could happen at a school, but you can connect with more people online) #ElonEd
A6) I used to think I didn’t have time for twitter chats in my busy schedule, but now I think I need to make more time for them! Thanks everyone! #ElonED
