Coming up in 30 minutes join in the goformative great conversation build
-
A1 no fears as our formative assessment has to be based on performance to assessment criteria
-
A2 hopefully data can be generated from primary research to prevent finding out from internet
-
-
-
I am super excited to host w/ starting in a few minutes!
-
Q3 A1 use tangible assessment process based on subject spec for formative assessment
-
Hope you all are joining us for !
-
-
-
Hey everyone! Welcome to ! Please start by introducing yourself and your favorite candy or costume!
-
David here! My favorite candy is almond joy. I love coconut and I am happy to be here!

Hi! My name is Jeanette, and this is my first Twitter chat. I'm a senior My favorite candy is Milky Way.
-
Hello, Dennis from Long Island, NY... favorite candy is a frozen Snickers :-)
-
-
Hi Rich, skittles are a good choice!
-
Lets get started with Q1!
-
-
Ooh good choice! I take mine back now!
-
Hey Karie, thanks for all the tweets! Milky Ways are good too, anything chocolate!
-
I'll take it a step further and say snickers ice cream bar, but not sure if that still counts!
-
Welcome Jeanette! Hope you enjoy it!
-
Sean from Orland Pk. IL
100 Grand bars are worth fighting over in my world, but all candy is delicious. Except circus peanuts
-
Hey peeps! Happy Halloween (although NOT my favorite at all!) Shai, HS Math T from PA. Favorite candy: anything peanutbutter
-
Welcome Jeanette! Great to have you join us 1st Twitter chat w/ us!
-
A1: one fear I have is will my assessment be challenging enough to my students but not so diff. they don't find success.
-
-
Ooh, skittles are super good! As a kid I made skittle water! Also, heard burying one inside a starburst was good!
-
A1 I think the biggest fear is making sure the FA is authentic and provides data that can be used to shape instruction.
-
-
-
Circus peanuts! Haven't heard of that in a million years.
-
Each new answer has me rethink mine reese's pieces too!
-
Hey Chris! Welcome! I saw some of your responses already! Can't wait to dive into them!
-
A1: Big fear with any tech is that there's not enough to engage Ss & they become distracted - get off task on device.
-
Hi Sean! Now I just remembered, always loved Whatchamacallits and 100 grand
-
A1: I think one of the hardest things about FA is making sure there is enough time in the lesson for Ss to complete it.
-
Hi, Niko PYP Coordinator and teacher librarian from Bangkok Thailand
-
A1: Fears with formatives? I guess mine would be that I put every stinking possible answer in for the formative to auto grade
-
A1: One fear is a worry that the task assessment is designed well enough to check for the right skills...
-
Glad you can join today Shai! this week? I hope so
-
A1: Am I asking too many questions? Could students use more of this time for independent learning/work
-
I always like to get at least one throwback in there. How about a popcorn ball? My grandma used to hand those out.
-
Exactly! Gotta find that happy medium.
-
-
-
sometimes that's the hardest part!!
-
I completely agree! We all want our students to be challenged but to learn as well!
-
Agreed, I have the same fear at times, rethink it, reflect, ask Ss for input too sometimes
-
-
A1 Might worry about the timing of the assessment. Gotta make it flow with the lesson/activity.
-
A1(con): Have my students acquired the skills/concepts necessary to do well? Do I have a plan if they don't?
-
or am I asking ENOUGH questions!! That's my doubts, constantly!
-
YUM to popcorn balls. I found the perfect snack (from Amazon) that tastes like popcorn balls, but healthier.
-
A1. Will be effective and drive instruction?
-
we also want them to find success too. Confidence is half the battle!!
-
Totally agree! In some cases might be before one S has a breakthrough +another is far ahead of what is assessed
-
Yes! Student-led formative assessment is one of the goals!
-
This is a constant area that Ts have to focus time on and monitor
-
A1(con): How much time will it take to analyze and put into act on?
-
Chris from UK - best chocolate ‘Yorkie’ bar especially the raisin & biscuit variety followed by Cadbury’s Bourneville bar
-
Right, that is so important. Otherwise, may be a waste of time.
-
A1: do any of you think people avoid FA because they think it is too much work?
-
Different topic, , but a student actually asked me to make a formative. He told me they help him learn so much! :)
-
Have that 'next thing' for those students to do who master the concept - move them forward
-
Years ago I was told to take assmt & convert hw long it took me to figure out Ss time, was interestng
-
A1 sometimes it might be daunting to invent new ways to ask the same questions
-
I have done this some, plan to do it more
-
Yes! + assessment making process is a way to review + reflect on their own learning!
-
Hi Niko, good to have you join!
-
Driving instruction is the biggest part. Gotta have a game plan going into it with the possible results
-
late this side of the pond so wanted to make a start before bedtime! :))
-
-
I got to admit that sometimes I felt like I simply wasn't being efficient. so in that way yes
-
-
-
LOVE LOVE Clark bars, and Almond Joys too!
-
Absolutely! How do make sure each our students find that success? Is it
better to set standards high?
-
I definitely have worried abt this, Ts are always learning, we make mistakes & grow, reflect
-
-
my grade 5 students were asking for exit tickets
-
great! and hopefully in the future we can give Ss formal ability to create formatives too!
-
A2: if the data isn't what you (or admin) want it to be- kind of "facing the facts" is hard, but not all data will be good.
-
Yes! I have some Ss who also ask the same thing.
-
A2: I guess one would be scared if all Ss have no clue how to do formative, but I love seeing who needs those one on one conv
-
I would guess that yes, some do, depending on schedule, needs, but tools help process
-
A2. It can be abstract or subjective and it can be difficult to ensure that the right data is being tracked
-
I try to set the bar high and adjust for specific students. Personalized goals.
-
Agreed, maybe we can ask 1 question and have Ss find alternate ways to ask it, learn from them
-
A2 what if data shows that my Ss don't know anything, I have to teach it again? a former T asked me...
-
Personalized goals sounds like a great idea! Is it practical?
-
it is as the middle ground will either be to hard or to easy- could do multi tasks easy to hard
-
yes! it can be difficult to find what wording/format works best for each student!
-
A2 My biggest fear in looking at data and it not being where I want it to be. Gotta self-reflect and make a change
-
And there is another lesson, take risk, see results, learn, reflect, move on, keep trying!
-
A2: When Ts aren't given PD or help to analyze data effectively. Stats class isn't required for Ts. Help Ts utilize data
-
agreed! it's hard not to have expectations of how every Ss WILL do
-
A2: FA requires careful reading from teacher and thoughtful feedback. Requires self reflection from T if it is to be of use
-
Sometimes we do have to re-teach,why data critical for Ts to see trends, self-eval
-
Had to miss the first half but am excited to be here! Happy Monday! And Halloween! 🎃🎃🎃
-
Part of my routine for FAN was to teach students to ask ?s about topic associated with Bloom's Taxonomy levels
-
totally! or what if data is misleading? what if they are proficient in that skill, but not foundation one
-
Stats can be difficult, had 1 course in undergrad then not till grad work 25 yrs later,
-
A2: What if Ss do poorly on the FA, even if they know the material?
-
Yes! I found that my Ss hadn't seen translations before by giving a formative. Knew what I needed to do after.
-
-
Hey Abbi, happy Halloween!
-
always need plan B or C or …… until Ss acquire the skill or understand the concept
-
imho any assessment is always feedback for me, how well have I personally performed
-
Exactly. We don't need to get crazy w/ stats & data but know how to use it to address gaps in learning
-
Definitely, my backup plans have several backup plans
-
Then T would need to find another way (avenue) to get Ss to show that knowledge.
-
And to add on, fears as a new Tincluded having right Plan B even if you know "what" to teach
-
. Yes! Gotta be ready for what the data says and make an adjustment and decision based off of it
-
I don't grade formatives at all. I give feedback, but no grades. Formatives have to be one avenue for Ss to show/notshow know
-
Definitely, then we can have a conversation with Ss, learn what was diff/not challenging, & revise
-
what if T doesn't have time to find another way before the end of the lesson?
-
agreed! and it can be difficult to find the right org. systems to follow up on feedback given from T-S
-
-
-
Gaining control of classroom flow & how to adjust instruction is big learning curve 4 newT
-
We have to do the best that we can, try and see what happens, learn for next time
-
-
My 1st question would be how do you know they know, but can't show? Just simply having Ss talk to you can work.
-
Are any student created? sounds like a great plan
-
It may not be that exact same day either. It's okay to revisit.
-
It is still a learning curve for experienced Ts too,
-
A4: If Ss do poorly, reevaluate your piece and try again! Maybe even try in a different way. https://t.co/axXLzTJExs
-
-
A2: What if Ss do poorly on the FA, even if they know the material?
-
My Ss do create, and I put them together for all Ss.
-
That is why the conversation piece/relatshp bldg so critical, use data to engage Ss in reflectn
-
Yes, one team selected a cycle ride & I organised it to take place along a 24 mile route
-
agreed, never assume that Ss have constructed meaning, assess it.
-
I usually look to myself first, and think through my instruction/resources, go from there
-
That is really awesome, I bet they really like that opportunity
-
Try tagging questions to standards or if those aren't specific enough skills! https://t.co/4BOcZiM6jQ
-
-
A2. It can be abstract or subjective and it can be difficult to ensure that the right data is being tracked
-
This is one of our school wide goals. Working with Ts to effectively analyze data.
-
That is what our PLC time is used for as well. Ts looking at scores from common assessments.
-
how can we facilitate transfer of knowledge into application if Ss haven't constructed their own understanding
-
Another fast chat this wk! Great conversation and encouragement happy to be in the group
-
A3: Keep collecting data efficiently and frequently! Look for small successes/improvements! https://t.co/D8vxxLyEXR
-
-
A2 My biggest fear in looking at data and it not being where I want it to be. Gotta self-reflect and make a change
-
Self-reflection is something that I have tried to do more of over the past few yrs, & each day!
-
That's awesome. It's okay if you find one that doesn't. That's part of growing and learning.
-
-
Personalized goals aren't always practical, in a dream world I'd do it way more. https://t.co/rPJbQU11UZ
-
-
Personalized goals sounds like a great idea! Is it practical?
-
So funny - many of our Ts think they're all alone in this, but I Tweet 1 thing & BAM! I have PLN support
-
altogether that means that one needs to be flexible and teach the Ss not just curriculum benchmarks
