Brett here- special ed-representing Oregon teachers in South Africa this summer as an NEA Foundation Global Fellow. Applications for next year's Fellowship are due soon! #oredchat
Q1- I wasn't a Risk player. Seemed like too much to keep track of. Now I like that it let's me try new ways of doing things. It helps me see that trying is ok even if I fail! #OrEdChat
A1: I played some, but my brother was the expert. It was a strategy game that I might have enjoyed if my bother wasn't so dang good at it. I hated losing. #OrEdChat
#oredchat A1: I started with Risk. Then moved on to Axis & Allies. Then and now: Diplomacy. Risk was mostly about volume.....Axis & Allies about probability.....Diplomacy is about relationships.
A2: I am often hesitant to bring in technology of any kind if I'm new to it...I'm starting to get better...letting my students teach me...I don't always have to have all of the answers or run things perfectly! #oredchat
A2: Sending proposals for larger conferences. Collaborating more on projects with teachers in my building. Crazy how it's easier to collaborate with my PLN sometimes... #OrEdChat
A2: being out of the classroom means my “want to try” keeps growing! Gamification, as well as going deeper into PBL & classroom transformations are all on the list! #OREdChat
A2: I've always wanted to try Google Tour Builder in my Amazing Race game. I was inspired by @JCasaTodd this week at #FETC and I think I'm going to jump in and take the risk this semester! #oredchat
#oredchat A2: To make AP Stats entirely project and design based. Also......to use ONLY standards-based-grading without giving any grade on a single assignment. I did try it once....but it was a failure. Haven't tried again.
Intro: Intervention Coordinator @Greshamschools A1: Risk taking is when I find I also make the most growth! My most intensive growth happened when changing grade levels, schools and districts.

In years past the Oregon State Teacher of the Year was the automatic NEA Global Fellow. It is now open to all union teachers and the deadline is Feb 5. You might be the next @NEAFoundation Oregon Fellow! #oredchat
A2: I am really interested in trying out gamification in my class. I have just found it difficult to find the time to figure it all out just yet. #oredchat
A2 #oredchat Skype and social media for my classrooms. So often we can't even take pictures of our special education students so I feel they are missing out on this whole technology/communication shift!
#oredchat A3: By actually using SBG in all of my classes before it was cool. (it still isn't.) And by introducing "Mathacogntion" to my Fr/So math classes. Weekly google-doc reflections about emotion and process.
A2: I'm a risk taker, somewhat fearless. I haven't yet tried writing a #DBCBooks , but I plan to write one... oh and I haven't presented out of state, but I'm scheduled to do that this summer. :) #OrEdChat
Wait! Gamification is on my list of to do's. Will do it. Soon.
A3- Since I'm in a different classroom all the time, everyday is a risk! Lol With my own kids, I homeschool, we have used different assignment tracking methods as well as varied forms of assignments. What works for one may change for the other kid! #OrEdChat
A3: I have been one of the first in my elementary to rewrite my report cards to standard based and also to jump into flexible seating. I also rewrote my ela curriculum aligned to core. #OrEdChat
A2: I have been interested in the #observeme movement, with a focus on if I am really focused on you when we are talking? Sounds silly I know, but it is SO easy to check e-mail, or texts when talking to people, and I hate it, but I also do it! #OrEdChat.
A3: By having the attitude that we are going on a mutual journey. I tell students that if we don't know how to do it, we'll try to figure it out together. It' more fun and easier to step off the deep end together. #OREdChat
A2: I tend to be a risk taker in Education. I like to try new things often. All risks for this years have been accomplished. I guess it is time for a new list! #oredchat
A3: I had a key unit in my class that I didn't grade Ss on whether or not they did it. It was a multiple week Character Dare & I wanted Ss to do it when they were ready and desired to, not for a grade. It has been one of the most successful things I did in the classroom #OrEdChat
A3 #OrEdChat The Oregon teachers will understand this from me the best... sometimes just standing up for the right to speak freely is as big a risk as you can ever take.
#oredchat A3: I'd also throw out: getting back on stage acting and singing after a 20 year hiatus. Ss see it.....and realize that I'm not about settling or stagnation or playing-it-safe in real life. That I value taking risks!
A3: I am definitely a risk taker. Especially in the classroom. I model it for my Ss and we have a culture where taking risks is not only accepted, it's encouraged! #oredchat
A3: I am a risk taker and am always trying out new things with my Ss. They have seen me succeed & fail, but the process is important to model. #oredchat
A3: I just try stuff. If I want my students to be brave in their learning, I need to be too. Sometimes the stuff works, sometimes it doesn't. It's important to see me modeling how I handle successes and failures. #oredchat
A4: I want to be great! At least that's what I strive to be everyday because that's what my kids deserve from me. Not just taking risks but making good decisions on what risks to take! #OrEdChat
A4: In general, I'm very much the "safe and good" type but after a couple years in front of the classroom, I've learned that taking risks help us grow, whether or not it was successful. #oredchat
A4- I started out "safe & good" when I began subbing. Now I like the risk! The more I do what a teacher expects, the more they give me free reign! It's a process that doesn't happen the first time Im in a classroom. Have to have student trust, too! #OrEdChat
A4: Staying with the status quo is boring and my mind gets bored. Trying new things allows me to grow as a teacher. Students get a better experience because we're all learning together. #oredchat
The side they let me enter and leave from, but the prisoners way outnumbered us. The guards popped in and out of our concert, but they didn't stay in their with us. 40-50 inmates, 7 band members, a preacher and his wife. It was a bit nerve wracking but fun. :) #OrEdChat
#oredchat A4: Ss are changing. The world is changing. I'm not sure it's possible to stay both "safe" and "good" for very long. I also recognize that that may show a lack of wisdom on my part as one can change safely without much risk.
A4: Safe & Good is just not an option for me. My Ss deserve my best. Sometimes that means I need to get out of our comfort zone & try something new. So worth it! #oredchat
A4: For the first 15 or so years of my career, I wasn't a risk taker. These last few years I have been because times are changing and you adapt or become extinct. #OrEdChat
A3: 5E lesson design has been around since 2002. I have modified it to meet the needs of my students. I rolled the idea of #5EPlus3 out for the 1st time publicly last Wed at the PLTW state conference. #oredchat
:) I didn't even hesitate, but maybe a nano second. Singing my two songs (where I do lead and not just harmony), in front of all guys (only 3 women in the room: my college kid playing bass for us, me, and then the preacher's wife) was unsettling but energizing. #OrEdChat
A4: I want to be great! I want my classroom to be full of joy and passion and to create magical learning experiences for Ss! I will never settle for status quo....my students deserve better than that. #oredchat
Please help me with my risk taking. I created a @Flipgrid#Flipgridfever as a challenge. The hardest thing I do is getting in front of a camera. How do you deal with risk taking?
A5: I model for students and share often the risks and failures I've experienced in my own life. They need to hear from us first that it's okay. Also, being intentional about praising students when they are taking risks and encouraging them to get back up when they fail #OrEdChat
A5: Relationships are the most important thing for building a risk taking environment. Students see me trying new things, seeking their help...they are more willing to follow suit if they feel supported and encouraged. #OREdChat
A1: As a kid, I NEVER took risks. I was afraid of my own shadow, unfortunately, that was the way I was raised. I was SO afraid to fail. As an adult, I have been taking risks since I started teaching back in 98' & I am no longer afraid to fail! #OrEdChat
A5: In my classroom I leave the projects a little open ended. We set a due date only once I know students have made significant progress toward the goal. That way they can play, experiment, and iterate early on. #oredchat
Speaking of being a sub, I'll finish my sub plans after this chat. :) Did I mention the valentine cards to you? Their for @hmarrs24 's kiddos. #oredchat
A5: Creating a safe & caring community where Ss are encouraged to make mistakes & try new things. Lots of readalouds & conversations around the benefits of growth mindset #oredchat
A5 #oredchat I use art. I show kids Picasso, some of the more odd van goghs (the green baby is a favorite) and show my kids how anything can be art and then i tell them how much that odd picasso or van gogh is worth. Then we do some art.
A5: Relationships are the most important thing for building a risk taking environment. Students see me trying new things, seeking their help...they are more willing to follow suit if they feel supported and encouraged. #OREdChat
#oredchat A5: Similar to growth mindset (praise the effort, not just results). Praise the fact that S responded to an open Q, don't just focus on accuracy of answer. Expect other Ss to respond to S conjectures thoughtfully. Call out "comma dumbass" statements from others.
