#HappyNewYear. Welcome to #NYEDChat! Tonight’s discussion is “EduBlogging: Power of #oneword to Guide Our 2018 Journeys”. @donald_gately is co-moderating with me & our friend, @JasperFoxSR who is our guest moderator. Let’s rock Twitter tonight.
Hi #NYEDChat friends, Carol ELA Consultant and @Wonderopolis Wonder Lead Ambassador here to start the convo with @donald_gately & @JasperFoxSR. Let's see who is joining us from around the globe?
#NYEDChat moderators are excited to talk about our intentions for 2018! Professional and personal growth doesn't just happen. We need to be intentional about it in order to find the why of what we are doing.
We'll be using the standard Q1/A1 format in tonight's #NYEDChat. Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation as we #CelebrateMonday with our colleagues.
#NYEDChat
A1: My win is working with a staff- a team that are committed to being innovative and great for our kids! I always struggle with needing more time to learn and try new things!
A1 A big #EduWin in 2017 was expanding our school’s Progressive Teaching Institute beyond the summer to include year-round peer-to-peer PD. A struggle has been getting colleagues beyond the “usual suspects” to present. #NYEdChat
A1: Win would be helping a non-reader find and finish first novel. Something I struggled with was balance between what I want students to do to reflect on reading vs what they want to do. #NYedchat
A1 My win is working to make a growth mindset infused classroom and teaching an inservice class on it. I am in a struggle with changing my pedagoy to match the incoming sci standards. #NYEDChat
A1 implementing flexible Ss scheduling was a real win last year. Ss took ownership of their day and their learning. A struggle is finding balance between work, School and family #NYEDChat
A1. I looped this year with my LY 4th graders..so I think a win is building even stronger relationships..Area of Improvement is finding ways to truly use data, in new ways to help Ss. #NYedchat
Holly, SS teacher from Warwick, glad to be joining in #NYedchat for first time. A1) Personal EduWin-finishing admin program and internship. Learned so much!
Daily teacher read aloud, guided reading, word study—sorts—and self-selected books for independent reading. Ss determine what we’re doing, no programs. #NYedchat
A1: I think a #eduwin I had last year was successfully completing my first year as principal...struggle was having enough time to spend in classrooms getting to know students while doing everything necessary to run the building
#nyedchat
Here’s an article on four structures for peer-to-peer PD that makes use of in-house curiosity and expertise. Also includes ways to implement. #nyedchathttps://t.co/khtQZ6Ya9X
Heads up is eye contact people work - heads down is well doing screens and paper mostly - had a mentor say once people during the day - paper after they leave #NYEDChat

A2) Integrating more authentic experiences into classroom learning and providing more opportunities for Ss to share learning beyond the walls of the school #NYEDChat
Great to have you here with us at #NYEDChat Mark. I was so happy to meet you F2F at #NCTE17. I am still trying to write the proposal for next year's conference.
Tech is always tricky...there is so much to choose from, innovation every day, and it isn't always reliable...tough to take the leap so good for you! #NYEDChat
A2 I guess my #OneWord2018 would have to be EMPOWER, which stands for
Exploration
Motivation
Participation
Openness
Willingness
Empathy
Resilience
I don’t have my own blog, but here’s the link to our book. #NYEdChathttps://t.co/gJkpGucobu

A3:
No secrets to get better- just have to work hard- manage my time, and realize that to do something special- special effort is required!
@cvarsalona@LRobbTeacher
A3: I am starting my masters in curriculum and instruction next month. I am hoping that will give me more tools to be innovative in the classroom with my students. #NYedchat@ERobbPrincipal@LRobbTeacher
A3 I will attempt to attain my #oneword through daily awareness of what I do,/observation of where the word pops up. Self-awareness, reflection and reflaction will be part of my process. #NYEDChat
A3: I will get better by investing in myself...reading, collaborating, listening, talking...anything to grow as a person first and then as a professional #nyedchat
A2 my word this year is courage to speak up and speak out to help invoke change. The way we do things needs to change and I want to be on the forefront of the fight #NYEDChat

A3 #nyedchat By inviting feedback. can't grow unless we hold up mirror to professional practice. So imp. Will create feedback surveys for important activities and use #ObserveMe form to invite feedback. Here it is: https://t.co/ug0LkzROKk. click to form and give me feedback!
A3 I’ll do my best to overcome my own tendency to “play teacher” when a student, task, or rough day challenges me. I’ll defuse from my teacher moves and teacher stance and teacher voice, and I’ll just teach...so that my students can learn. https://t.co/BgfYcLY3rH#NYEdChat
A3: Putting my money where my mouth is for one. I preach all about it and need to stop letting those that do not see the value derail the progress. I want to research more in both inquiry learning and literacy strategies. #NYedchat
A3 This year I am motivated to expand my #PLN by doing as many chats as I can, writing my blog and seeking like minded and different minded educators to help me grow #NYEDChat
A3 My one word has to be REFLECTION! In terms of my how, I love to journal and reflect in writing with weekly and monthly reviews of my journal to keep myself on track. #NYEDChat

A4 For me it's about focus. And also time. Need to stay on top of what's coming up next. Leadership challenges of the principalship can create a cloud of distraction that interferes with focus. #nyedchat
A3 working to grown my #pln and really trying to dedicate time to blog. Oh and I’m writing my dissertation on the gamification of writing instruction so that will take lots of courage to finish #NYEDChat
A4: I anticipate feeling overwhelmed at different points along the way to my masters. Fortunately I have a loving wife and amazing support system to help me overcome this obstacle so that I can make sure I am doing what is best for my kiddos when they walk into class! #nyedchat
A4 My biggest struggle will be finding a balance. I tend to go all in sometimes, and get burned out. I need to learn how to section time for each thing, and leave time for my personal life #NYEDChat
Well said, Don! With the daily challenges of the job, focus is sometimes difficult...but we must try our best to do what is best for the the teachers and students who rely on us! #NYEDChat

PLNs are game changers! I feel like my PLN has made me a much better teacher this year. I go into work pumped everyday (yes even on Mondays!) #NYEDChat
A4 negativity and self doubt are two hurdles that stand in my way. The more negativity I encounter the more I question things especially since I am pursuing change #NYEDChat
A4: Patience is key for me. When you have big dreams you have to be willing to be in it for the long hall. It's one step at a time. I love this blog post that I recently came across https://t.co/Ym4YZUFJis#NYEDChat
