The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.
Happy Wednesday! Welcome to #miched. Introduce yourself by letting us know who you are, where your from, what you teach, and where your favorite spot to #miched is!
Hello all! Drea checking in from Traverse City, MI. I'm so excited for tonight's chat! I teach STEM, MakerSpace and teachers. My fav spot to #miched is my comfy love seat watching the sunset through the trees.
My name is Ann Smart. I am an Ed Tech Consultant for Lenawee ISD in Adrian, MI. I have to #miched inside because I have cruddy wifi and signal is bad outside.
Hello! I'm Shawna. I teach MS Band in Port Huron, MI, & have been at it 21 years. :) I enjoy a nice chat w/my feet propped on the couch. Excited to check out the conversation tonight. #miched

So it's a homemade kiln out of a metal chair, a metal bowl, with drilled oxygen holes that has been tested via his STEM class. I question the safety but love the ingenuity. #miched
Officially this is my 1st year teaching, 5th year as a STEM consultant. What I can say I definitely ask first is: "what is the purpose of the learning?" The tools are great but must further the learning. #miched
A1: As with any tool I want the kids doing. I look for a tool that makes class procedures faster and allow for students to create their own understanding. Tools like Desmos and Geogebra as well as gSuite have been huge and pushing me to be more S centered. #miched
A1: It's okay not to know a tool inside and out. If it enhances or extends the lesson, I'm much more comfortable letting the students lead and we learn together. #miched
A1: I am still new to the classroom, but I try to follow the Triple E framework when deciding to integrate a new tech tool into my classroom. I ask myself, does this tool engage students, enhance learning, and extend learning? #miched
A1: It is also a balance. How much time with it take to learn how to use this tool? Is that time well spent? There are lovely things out there are aren't worth my time...yet. Summer is for revisiting. #miched
A1 - I show students less and ask them to problem solve more. Productive struggle and modeling problem solving for each other does wonders for soft/executive skills! #miched
A1: One thing I look for a lot more lately is the ability to give and receive feedback in meaningful ways. I’m always on the hunt for reflection tools, and strategies with tools that we have to enhance their use for reflection. #miched
A1) Since moving to Pontiac School district I've shifted how I use my content video lectures for a "flipped learning" approach. In Pontiac we have extremely low attendance (72% daily). Flipping now enables a self-paced approach. #miched
I'm on non touch screen chromebooks. The video creation looks sweet, but without touch, I think there are other video creation tools that might do what I want. #miched
I use Peergrade quite a lot. The structured positive student feedback really helps my students think through their design. My students were asked to create cell phone holders and had to review each other's work. Most student's walked away with improvement ideas. #miched
A2 the most recent one we've enjoyed is Google Sites. Here is one that our 8th grade was crowd building today to learn our local history and support our local historical society! https://t.co/wQvlk3z7Q7#miched
a1 - That's a big question, but I think opening my world up and expanding my pln has helped the most! Helping my k-3 kids focus on creating and less focus on consumption with tech in the classroom. Changing my class to focus on the 4Cs instead of the tech only. . #miched
A2: One of my favorite collaboration tools is “suggesting” in Docs. It’s a great way to get kids to implement revision and editing. It can help them differentiate between the two, and it’s a really authentic experience too. #miched
A2: I like to use gSuite tools a lot in the classroom for collaboration.
I also use low-tech group-the-kids-together-and-giv-them-a-situation to work on. F2F communication and real world creation of something is still important to me. #miched
I find "flipgrid" to be a perfect way for students to collaborate using video for projects. The videos are made in teams and the student feedback is awesome. Plus the kids bond while adding fun selfies stickers😆 #miched
A2: I’m a big fan of shared workspaces. Google Drive/Office 365 apps. Classroom example: shared note-taking during a lesson. Notes projected on the screen for live backchannel Q&A. #miched
Q3: Questioning: What tools have you found that creates experiences, answers questions, allows student to pose questions, and/or share findings? #miched
We have a video prod class in our school. Ssthat have taken the class are the lead directors, and they all pull out their phones and then check with the other T to cook their creations. I think we also have WeVideo, but again finding the balance for everything is hard. #miched
It's an app you use in groups. The Ss have a dude on screen that they tap when they start talking. It records who's talking & for how long. Who's interrupting, etc. It also records the convo so you get to listen in and see who's talking are they on task. Do all Ss get it? #miched
A3: I love using @Socrative to let Ss ask Q's. The day of a quiz, I have Ss enter any Q's they have. I can see all Q's, make small groups, etc. #miched
A2: The Google feature of mentioning people or assigning tasks in comments is one of the most effective ways I collaborate. Many teachers and students are not aware of how to do it: https://t.co/OMqrKZnA6n#MichEd

A3: I like to use a combo of gSuite and then tools like Desmos and Geogebra. One recent example abt rules for non-central angles. No suggestions other than to collect data. #michedhttps://t.co/qyAazGKS4v
A3: Cameras are great for this imo. We’ve been using the label tool in SeeSaw with some of younger Ss to document and label photos of plants or shapes. They take a bunch of pictures then decide the best example and label and share it. #miched
I haven’t seen the demo, but I remember seeing that as a coming feature. I see huge possibilities for students who miss class or have different processing speeds/language abilities, teachers who miss PD, etc. #miched
I don't think there is anything that compares to Desmos as a teaching tool. Captures student thinking, allows for creative representation, and provides teachers with so many ways to view and manage progress. #Miched
Q3: @Tes_Teach with Blendspace is a tool I've used with Ss to share their learning via text, images, video, and quizzes. We've also used this to sequence events for their "How-To" pieces. #miched
I like using tech as a mechanism for capturing stuff and then the good old human interaction for responding to it. The tech allows for future reference and viewing of many mind products in one place. #miched

A4 We recently did a project with a local Furniture store for 3rd-grade students to learn area and perimeter and they sent their thoughts to the furniture designers with @flipgrid and had top Ss present to them in person: https://t.co/ML2UQ78sKh#miched
A4 In the classroom I use @Seesaw. Ss have performance assessments (videos), compositions (w/audio), & other work in their portfolio. Ps connected instantly to S's work. I also use our band FB page & Twitter to share out what's happening in/outside of the band room. #miched

A4: within the school: video broadcasts, podcasts, etc. But: saved on our servers and spread through our channels. I love apps like Anchor, Twitter, and Instagram, but they require proper parent permission that we can’t always obtain. #miched
A4: Sadly I don't do much to get Ss work out. I need to use more project-based learning in my class and then we can share that. I do more puzzle/play learning and, well, no one like a spoiler.
I know of Ts using Blogger to get S work out and then Twitter to broadcast. #miched

A4: Some of my favorite experiences are hosting Film Festivals for our elementary movie making clubs. We showed their movies on big screens and invited families and the community. It was authentic, and easy to do with iMovie and Google Drive. #michED

I like the idea of surveying parents to see which social media platform they use most, and then create a class account that only parents and your admins can access. #miched
Q4: We used lots of tools to share Ss work and to tell their stories: @SkypeClassroom, #GoogleHangouts, social media, QR codes, student blogs, Aurasma, and the Web. #miched
Q4: If you're in Wayne County, you can get a free license of @LifesizeHD Cloud to connect with authors, experts, mystery readers, etc. Super easy to use! #miched
My students are creating their final design projects. They are 3D printing something that fits w/in hobby, community, or engineering feat. They get to choose their project but have to articulate the what, why, how, etc. #miched
A5: It's fun watching our Ss Tch have Ss create green-screen reenactments of US history. THey use the @Veescope app and have embedded the videos in #keynote to demonstrate their learning. #miched
Q5: There are so many creation tools to choose from! One of my favorite is Puppet Pals (iOS). Be prepared for lots of creative thinking! https://t.co/lwkkps3QJ6#miched
A5: Less about tools and more abt the prompt. Tools that allow for creativity are Audicity, Soundtrap, video recorders, cardboard/scissors, desmos, geogebra, GPS/compass. Ss choose how to go forward, I try to find a tool for their idea. #miched
Q6: Wondering. What tool/s allow students to discover new things, explore topics that pique their curiosity, and empower them as content consumers and creators? #miched
