follows a Q & A Format. Q1/A1 Q2/A2
First Question coming up in 1 min
Q1: What is the purpose of education in your opinion? What are you seeking to accomplish through this work?
A1: The purpose of education is to prepare ppl to productive citizens.
HEY!
Chris, SPED work program and Transition program coordinator, rural MO
. welcome, Chris! Glad you can join us all the way from MO!
Hi Chris glad you could make it!
A1 We want to prepare youth for the outside world to collaborate and communicate
I ask this first question because I think it's important to begin any discussion about education this way.
A1. For me, in my work, the purpose of edu is to provide the necessary skillset to facilitate upward mobility
A1 I am constantly learning reading and growing in my craft and trying to stay abreast on current topics in Education
A1: My goal is to create knowledgeable, conscientious, and critical students who can advocate for themselves.
A1. Purpose of education.. make others believe in themselves, make them work make them know their talents and how to use them
Q2: How have aspects of your identity (e.g. ethnicity, sexuality, ability) influenced how you learn/teach?
So jmsn and Jame Black coming out with albums in a 24 hour period. I guess they're invited to the cookout.
A1: While I am in education I seek to leave my hand print that change lives for the better.
my pleasure thank you Sir!
Yeah I think upward mobility is important. Ss need to know what's working against them and how to act https://t.co/39ysCQjMZs
A1. For me, in my work, the purpose of edu is to provide the necessary skillset to facilitate upward mobility
A1: I really want my students to know how the world operates and how for many of them it's not built in their favor.
A2: I grew up in Detroit, the Blackest city in America. I'm sure having black teachers throughout affected my teaching style.
A2: Being a black woman my teaching style came from how I was raised. Firm but fair. Always my brother's keeper
A2: I'm a straight man so I had to deliberately change my speech to be more inclusive regarding gender and sexuality.
Q3: Have you encountered cultural conflicts with students or colleagues? How were they resolved?
A2: I've mainly worked in schools with predominantly black and white student populations and I'm more open w/ my black students
A2. My identity is everything ππΎ Everything I learn/how I teach is through the lens of an immigrant, Hispanic Woman.
. are there any specific strategies, interactions that you'd attribute to your upbringing as a black woman?
Has there ever been a time where you did something in a class and thought "that's just like ______"?
A3: I have always worked in Title 1 schools and no conflicts with Ss but colleagues I have some that didn't end well
A3: When I work in predom white schools I find myself bothered by how they consume and interpret hip hop/rap.
My dad was a preacher and mom was a teacher. I teach fairness, love, understanding, and I'm always fair. I own my faults. :)
A3 Yes! It was my ignorance...had to research, ask, and learn https://t.co/0XEZym7Zly
Q3: Have you encountered cultural conflicts with students or colleagues? How were they resolved?
A3: Whenever I'm in a colleague's classroom I look at the bookshelf & see what authors they have. Hopefully not just white men.
Being raised by mother she taught us to always have voice. So I teach my Ss to respectfully speak their minds.
A3. Yes, mostly innocent and unintentional, so cultural dialogue is critical in these cases
Q4: How does -or can- help us to better address unique learner needs?
. interesting. How do you encourage students to speak their mind while still showing respect?
Trying to really dive deep on this Cinco de Mayo. I know this day can be contentious for some. https://t.co/pfYQx9FN1H
oh man starting w the deep questions right off the bat!! ππΏ
SureRT : hello! Jump right in!
. what happened? If you can share.
yes, its unintentional but privilege isn't acknowledged, neither are biases often
my kids laugh at me for saying "you all" and "y'all" until they hear my reasoning.
. hi, Lane! Welcome to the chat!
A4 provides a means to meet Ss where they are...avenue to differentiate instruction https://t.co/GONmOr9bQz
Q4: How does -or can- help us to better address unique learner needs?
Virtual field trips to diff regions RT : Q4: How does -or can- help us to better address unique learner needs?
No yelling or aggressive behavior. I give them an example of how to approach an adult.

we're in San Diego, most have only heard y'all on tv. Not stopping me.

Q5: What does Cinco de Mayo mean to you? Is your school recognizing it?
Absolutely! My Hispanic girls are very polite yet very intelligent.
Yelling is disrespectful-no matter what, when or who
A4; When I was doing I liked using videos from other teachers. Help students learn from multiple styles.
A5 Yes however many black Ss and myself can speak very loudly. We have to be aware of this.
I was a very loud kid. Yelled plenty. Not intentionally disrespectful
A5: Nothing and I think it's because although the Ss my be Hispanic they aren't Mexican.
A4 gives ss the opportunity to explore the outside world and discover new things in the palm of their hands

I meant it in the classroom during T-S behavior mgmt , u don't think so?
Q6: Are there special events or days unique to the culture of your school? Should there be?
A5: Although I live in Houston so an invitation to a delicious Mexican restaurant is a pretty regular thing.
I definitely still am when I'm not at work.
. had no idea. Filing that away.
A5+1 I really wish ALL customs, traditions, people were celebrated all year long.....need to improve here
A5: An opportunity to learn about π²π½. For some of our Ss is a symbol of acceptance in a new country https://t.co/aBjGGNqSd7
