A1: In the pursuit of perfection, we find excellence. I believe in high standards because Ss like Ts who push them and believe in them. Another quote/Bible verse is to be doers of the word and not hearers only. In other words, walk the walk. #masterychat
A1 - "If students can't learn the way we teach, then we should teach the way they learn!"... Always providing what's best for your students and adapting to their needs. #masterychat

A1 Changing the world doesn't happen because you strive for status quo.
I woke up today to kick some ***, not to do what I have always done.
Remind yourself every day of the reasons why you push yourself to be better.
#teachbetter#masterychat
A1: I have a book called “Mrs. Sevinsky’s Book of Great Ideas” where I start writing down anything. I let it go and sometimes visit it. I create a VERY disorganized Google doc and link other Google docs and visit it periodically. Creativity is a process. #tlap. #MasteryChat
A1: I try to live, teach, and grow by the quote "If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way". Of course, we all want to do great things, but if we wait for that moment, we lose the day to day moments that make a difference. #MasteryChat

A1: “People will forget what you said, but they will NEVER forget how you made them feel.” Teaching is ALL ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS! We must BUILD them in order to gain the RESPECT of our students in order to foster LEARNING! #Masterychat@thegridmethod@jeffgargas@chadostrowski
A1: inspiration from Dumbledore. “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times. If one only remembers to turn on the light” words to live by #Masterychat

A1: Richard Elmore on the need to examine traditional practices: "Unexamined wallpaper is classroom practices and institutional policies that are so entrenched in school culture or a teacher's paradigm that their ability to affect student learning is never probed."#masterychat

A1: A quote that I try to live by is:
“Attitude is the mind’s paintbrush, it can COLOR any situation.”-James W. Moore
This quote hung over my desk since the first day of this school year—it is a great reminder of how WE have the POWER to CHOOSE our attitude. ♥️
#MasteryChat
A1: Oh my, so many, it's hard to just choose one. Know better, do better pretty much sums it up for me. Do the best you can, until you learn to do better. #masterychat

I was just referencing Harry Potter to @jeffgargas while discussing education this morning at Panera! The Sword of Gryffindor took center stage. :) #masterychat
A1) A few years ago I went to @ronclarkacademy and met @hopekingteach after my 2nd year of teaching. I was really feeling lost and like maybe I was too different for my building. She said “If the kids think your crazy your doing it right!” Her words keep me going! #MasteryChat
“Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.” - Anthony D J’Angelo
My attitude means EVERYTHING, whether I’m working out or working with a student. Smiles are contagious! #MasteryChat

#MasteryChat. In order for me to go further in life I must mentally prepare myself. I tell my students that it is not the smartest but those that can endure to the end.

Loving that by the end of tonight we will have hundreds / thousands of tweets to reflect on tomorrow and all these amazing quotes to put into ACTION in our lives! #MasteryChat
No need to be sorry! I think that is one of the purposes of this chat tonight. Taking these overgeneralized quotes that we post all over social media and then turning them into action. Mobilizing ourselves to LIVE the message, not just post it. #masterychat
A1: My favorite from @JonGordon11 “Leadership is not just about what you do but what you can inspire, encourage and empower others to do.” #masterychat

-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: It is not about what you teach, or how you teach, first and foremost it is about WHO you teach! Kids need to feel a part of your classroom community before ANY learning can take place! #masterychat
A1 I have too many quotes to include, but this one has been speaking to me lately! I like to remind myself and my students that learning is hard, requiring us to push ourselves beyond where we thought we could go so we can become the people we want to be #masterychat
Q1 - What's your favorite educational or inspirational quote that you try to live, teach, and grow by? OR What is a quote that you want to live by but can improve on following? #MasteryChat
It's pinned to my Twitter!
“...start the way GRACE did, by drawing a circle around everyone and saying they’re in.” — so important in every setting, including education.
#MasteryChat#EverybodyAlways
A2: Relationships, relationships, relationships. This mean that you have to put the work in first and build positive relationships to make any meaningful change. #MasteryChat
A2: It's obvious that students learn best from Ts they respect. Ss need to know that you can relate to them and that you actually care about their futures. How can we accomplish this? Build relationships and make their learning experience REAL. Connect to them. #MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A1: “The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of the government in the next.” I live by and am working towards this standard. Our work has deep real world consequences! #MasteryChat
Q1 - What's your favorite educational or inspirational quote that you try to live, teach, and grow by? OR What is a quote that you want to live by but can improve on following? #MasteryChat
A1) At @iste I got to meet @ShakeUpLearning she said “Start small, think of 1way to go BEYOND!” I ❤️ it because it reminds me that I need to slow down &really focus on 1task &make that task amazing. I want to share w/ Ts who might be nervous starting something new #MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: I absolutely love this quote, and my hs teacher actually wrote this quote on an assignment that she handed back to me. Relationships are key. If I do not show my students that I genuinely care, I will not achieve much success. Trust is huge. #MasteryChat
Good evening, #PLN! Welcome to #MasteryChat. I'm so excited to be hosting tonight! Please share where you're from and what your role in education is! #MasteryChat
A2: relationships are the building blocks of human connections. Learn about someone and show you care and theyll run through a brick wall for you.
#MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: Ss don't care if all you do is stand and lecture. They want to feel connected to you and the room and the material. Make it meaningful, and they will learn so much more. #masterychat
Thank you...but a lot of these quotes send out a bad message or are just false. I’m not going to participate further tonight with #masterychat because I’m afraid I’ll just come across as Debby Downer.
A2: It’s quite simple... in the words of Rita... “Kids don’t learn from people they don’t like.” The same goes for us as adults. We must RESPECT each child that walks into our classroom and show them the LOVE they DESERVE! #Masterychat@thegridmethod@jeffgargas@chadostrowski
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: You can’t make corrections or suggest change of direction until you have a connection. When someone knows you genuinely care, then then genuinely care about what you know. #masterychat
A2: I have seen this play out time and time again. It’s easy to get through to Ss once you build that RELATIONSHIP with them. It is something that I really started to build on last year and will continue to grow in! Saying it is different than showing it. #masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: Ss want to know that you are real. It means leaving your house on a Saturday to go watch a S play basketball bc he asks. Or, going to see a performance 35 minutes from home because she asks... #masterychat
Hi #masterychat! Heidi, 3rd grade T from MA joining for a few minutes. A1 I keep this quote in my plan book: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire" by William Butler Yeats. I want to inspire students to want to learn & this quote reminds me of this.
Q1 - What's your favorite educational or inspirational quote that you try to live, teach, and grow by? OR What is a quote that you want to live by but can improve on following? #MasteryChat
A2 - If you don't connect with students on a human level you will never connect with them on a an academic one. Building the relationships is the foundation of all successful classrooms and instruction #masterychat
A2: to me, it means that I have to build a strong, healthy, collaborative relationship with Ss and Ps with trust at the forefront of each of those relationships. I need to listen to what they are saying and understand them! #masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2 It makes me think of 1 of Rita's quotes about, children won't learn from people they don't like. We're the same. If we don't sense that respect from people we work with, we have a hard time giving our best for that person. #MasteryChat
#masterychat Few minutes late but missed the last few weeks😞 Gloria from NJ - closing up 5th grade ELA/Social Studies and opening the door as Elementary Literacy Coach for the upcoming school year.
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2 I have always believed that the content I am tasked to teach is far less important than the Ss I am tasked w/ teaching. I must know my Ss, have a thousand conversations with them about nothing, and believe in them completely. #masterychat#teachbetter
Relationships are 2-way streets. You learn about Ss and they learn about you. That builds trust and compassion. When Ss know you have their best interests at heart and are fighting for them, they want to impress. #MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A1: "Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here." - Max Ehrmann. Desiderata #masterychat
#MasteryChat To me it means focusing on building those relationships. Sometimes school is the only positive environment will see. We need to model relationships in the classroom.
A2. Relationships first! Smiles to welcome Ss in, listen to stories they have to share, ask questions, find out about their families, interests, etc. Share your stories with them!
#masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2~model love, continuous learning & unconditional belief in Ss without fail ~ being that soft place to fall and a helping hand to get up & move on for their betterment #MasteryChat
A2) “No significant learning takes place without a significant relationship.”
I’ve said it before, but teachers who care deeply for their students tend to have students who care deeply about their class.
#Masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: it means relationships. Ss won’t learn if they don’t feel safe and cared for. At the end of the day (or year) does it matter that they know the arming number of Helium is 2? No. It matters that you ignited an interest and made them believe they can learn. #MasteryChat
A2: It means we each have to be the resident learner in our classroom. If you teach writing, write. If you teach reading, read. If you want students to move outside their comfort zones, you must move out of yours. Be what you want your kids to be. #MasteryChat
Well, we are glad you stopped in for a quick minute. I'd love to have you join in on one of our future chats. Any topics that would pique your interest? #masterychat
A2 Building relationships is key because trust is built on relationships. If the people you work with do not trust you, then you will never be able to achieve anything #masterychat
A2: If I keep on going dispite knowing it isn't working my Ss won't care and will stop trying. If I stop to ask ?'s and change how I am teaching then they will know I care and want the best for them. I want them to realize I care about their academic and SEL needs. #MasteryChat
A2: I have always learned the most from ppl I know and respect. I need to remember this more when I'm working with the kids - put myself in their shoes. Would I believe me? Would I care?
#MasteryChat
A2: To reach a child’s mind, you u must first touch their heart. Every decision we make in the classroom, in the building, and in the district should always have what’s best for the child as the focus.#masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: Write notes to them. When I was in the classroom, I wrote a personalized note to each student prior to end of year testing. It meant a lot to them and to me. #masterychat
#MasteryChat A2. I think building relationships has to come first with kids..You're building a trusting environment where all of us make mistakes and learn
A2) To me it means that connections are key. Ss &staff alike will work hard &make growth as long as they know they are cared about. When I look at my class I know not all of them will recall the content but if they walk out as better people that is what matters. #MasteryChat
A2: When students can connect, they see they bring value. Value, brings intrinsic motivation to be a part of the learning community! So learn to make eye contact, kneel down if needed, smile, and LISTEN. #masterychat
A2: Teachers who rush to teaching content or to challenging kids to try new things, before developing any trust or relationships, will struggle to see progress in their students. #MasteryChat
A2: If you relate to kids, they know you care. If they know you care, they will respect you. If they respect you, they will want to learn from you. If they want to learn from you—you’ve done your job.
If you go a step further & love kids, then ANYTHING is possible. #masterychat
A2. For me, its putting relationships before the content. (That might sound risky but its crucial.) Through strong relationships the content will flow beautifully. Without showing how much we care, we will struggle to reach our students with the content. #masterychat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2) If kids are treated like a commodity, just another one to push out, why would they care. But when I take the time to at least know their name, we have a better chance of helping them. #MasteryChat
A2: Ditto #MasteryChat The way that you are in relationship with others deeply impacts the type of connection established... superficial, nervous, committed, loyal, honest, etc.
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2b) Everything sounds better when it comes from someone you love and everything sounds worse when it comes from someone you hate.
Yep. It’s that simple.
#Masterychat
A2: I think it refers to the fact that teachers having a positive relationship with their students has a .72 effect size (if I remember correctly). That is fairly significant. #MasteryChat
Relationships are ALWAYS #1, but I am feeling it esp in my 1st yr coming up. I need to est rapport with ss, ps, etc., and it all starts w building trust through open dialogue. I think ps can be wary of 1st-yr (and young!) ts, and I want my care for kids to SHINE! #MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: You can tell when Ss are bought in as well. I almost got a job that would taken me away from them. They were happy when I didn't get the job. But now, I am starting to present at conferences so I'm able keep teaching them. #masterychat
A2. We tell kids to listen all of the time. How often do we listen to them? Designate a time in the day where kids and teachers can openly communicate. #masterychat
A2: I think about when I was a student & how I viewed my teachers. If I thought they didn't care, I was less likely to engage with the material. But, it means more than that. I do care, and I want them to know it. They come first, always. #masterychat
A chat on applicable learning strategies in the classroom...something that actually covers the idea of increasing knowledge in the classroom. Most edchats I participate in cover empathy, relationships, or culture...nothing of knowledge in the classroom. #masterychat
A3: Students KNOW if you are not positive and that mindset shows to them. If students know you are negative, they're more likely to be the same way. So, what you give is what you get! #MasteryChat
#masterychat Q2 The straight fact is, no one learns from someone they don't like. I don't actually mean "like" in terms of the word itself, yet the notion that you can respect another person and value their qualities enough to learn from them. Adults and students alike!
A3: This makes me think of how Ts approach teaching. Do you believe all students can achieve? can grow? can do challenging things? Definitely has a #growthmindset vibe #masterychat
A3 This quote could go so many ways! My first thought is #growthmindset bc there is so much chatter in the education community about that right now. I think both our Ss and (even more so) us must have this frame of mind. We are all striving to be better and grow! #masterychat
A2: I will go unconventional here. Moral psychology teaches us that we lead with our heart and use rationale after the fact to justify our intuitions. Put another way, Ss don’t care about the facts from you until they like you. #MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A2: Relationships. Relationships. Relationships! Build them and your students will know that you really care about them. Your students will want to improve because they know you believe in them. #MasteryChat
A3: If you go into situations with positive intent, you have no way to go but positive (IMO). If you take a negative look before positive, that's your outcome. #MasteryChat
A2: Building relationships with and really getting to know your Ss as individuals is key to their individual success and a successful classroom community. #MasteryChat
A3: I remember taking an Honors course and learning about fixed vs growth mindset. I became determined to have a growth mindset after that and even got to be interviewed by a member of @joboaler team. We have the ability to escalate or de-escalate. Let's build up! #MasteryChat
A3: If you have a fixed mindset you will not go as far or enjoy as much as if you had a growth mindset or innovators mindset. You have the ability to determine how to react, so choose well! #masterychat
A1: These keep me constantly evaluating if I truly am able to explain new content in a simple way + getting the point across to as many Ts + Ss as possible #MasteryChat#Reflection#Education#Growth#PD#GotSTEM
A3: sometimes you have to fake it until you make it. Kids can tell your mood, good or bad. Therefore we have to be positive every single day. They should never know when we struggle. #MasteryChat
A3 - This means that if I am positive I will create positivity. You can't control the world around you but you can always control how you react to it! this is paramount to being a successful teacher! #masterychat
So true. How can we build trust? Credibility is important. Can we consistently project authentic confidence with honest humility at the same time? #masterychat
A3: I think this is beneficial in every part of life, but as Ts, we have to remember to be flexible and adaptable because things are always changing in our setting. We have to also remember to teach our Ss this so they believe in themselves. #masterychat
A3- If we wake up every day and say we’re going to have a bad day, we will never be disappointed. We have to wrap my mind around whatever happens to us, we can overcome it and have a good day #MasteryChat
A2: It is the driving factor in how I interact with Ss. I’ve seen the power of relationships in schools, especially the kids that everyone else gave up but you didn’t. There is something so rewarding in seeing the good in kids and showing them they matter to you. #masterychat
A3: Ahhh mindset. My favorite topic of convo! It’s been an amazing journey to KICK OFF the year with @peterhreynolds THE DOT to teach the students all about the @growthmindset1 It has not only shaped their lives, but improved my own thinking! #MasteryChat@thegridmethod
A3: Everyone faces challenges and hardships—how we respond those things is based largely on our mindset. It’s the proverbial “when life hands you lemons make lemonade”. #MasteryChat
A3: What you bring to your classroom every single day is what your students will emulate back to you. I often tell my students, “Regardless of what’s happening at home, or outside of school, let’s make this the best six hours of OUR day.” #MasteryChat
A2 So important to take the time to get to know your Ss. The first weeks of school set the tone for the whole year. Even little things like greeting your Ss as they arrive with "I"m glad you're here!" can make all the difference. #masterychat
#masterychat A2: I'm going to push back on this just a bit. Reaching their heart takes time. It takes communication back-forth. U have their minds on day 1. But you will lose it if over time you fail to show that you care. So I agree in spirit, just out of sequence.
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
I saw a tweet about how @jeffgargas always makes us feel welcome. I completely agree. That is why I keep on coming back to this chat even though you all may be tired of me by now. :)#MasteryChat
A3: You have to be real with those kids. I would tell them if I was in a bad mood or didn't feel good. They did the same for me. It kept misunderstandings out of the room. Ss always tell me they like that I am a straightshooter. #masterychat
A3 Great quote! As an educator it means, that if my mind is fixed on how low my Ss are, how hard they are to deal with, then they will be. If I have a growth mindset and think of how great I am or my Ss are or how far we can go, then we will. #MasteryChat
A3 If we continually entertain fixed mindset or negative thoughts, those take root. If we focus on what is right and good in our lives, and recognize where we can grow, there are limitless opportunities! #masterychat
A3: It all depends on your attitude. If you think positively then positive things happen, if you think negatively then you’ll focus on all the bad things. #masterychat
A3:Your mindset is POWERFUL.
If you think IT, you’ll speak IT.
If you speak IT, you’ll live IT.
If you live IT, you’ll become IT.
So, just be IT. Be posITive.

#MasteryChat Ss can tell if you are not being genuine or are not on your game each day. I found with my year 6 class on my prac last year is they can see straight through you! If they don't believe what your teaching they will stop learning.
A3 If you only focus on the negatives, that is all you will ever see. You have to look at the positives as well. It is easy to get sucked into complaining, it is harder to evaluate a situation and look for areas to improve. #masterychat
A3) “The pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity and the optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
I’d add that you can replace “pessimist” with “victim” and “optimist” with “leader.”
#Masterychat
A2) find out what your kids are into, learn about it then use it to teach them about the world/concepts/outcomes. Fortnite map for directions... “the ammo depot is _____ from the meteor crater.” #MasteryChat
A3: If you keep a positive mindset, the atmosphere in your classroom will remain positive. The kids will want to be in your classroom and that is always a win. Modeling a growth mindset is important to a positive environment. Reflect what you ask of the kids. #MasteryChat
A3. If you have a positive mindset in the classroom and school, the culture in your classroom will hopefully spread as well! Ss learn by modelling, and observing! A good positve mindset in believing in a Ss in learning encourages them to get their wings and fly! #masterychat
A3: I either succeed or I learn. Use what can be seen as a negative and turn it into a positive. I was (am😬) a wildly, loud, boisterous, rambunctious kid but also loved to learn. Instead of stifling me, most of my tt inspired me, challenged me and laughed with me. #MasteryChat
A3: If I go into the classroom with a happy disposition, fake or not, the day is going to be great! One can talk themselves into being happy when Ss are around :) #MasteryChat
A3) If I am positive and promote positiveness, then eventually others will pick that up and carry it as well. Plus, I need to learn along side my Ss! #MasteryChat
#masterychat Q3 ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING relates back to mindset. We are all only as capable as we allow our minds to be. Having an open and growth mindset should be a requirement for those in the field of education. It is nearly impossible to function any other way!
I'll send you a DM if you don't mind. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on this. Perhaps you can help us come up with some questions or specific ideas! I am always open to making #masterychat valuable.
A3: Choice Theory (William Glasser): :The only person whose behavior we can control is our own." So choose wisely! Each day is an opportunity. #MasteryChat#path2serendipity
A3: A T's mood dictates the room. If you are excited about teaching, it will be contagious with the Ss. I get excited about sharing new tech lessons with them. That is why I do chats so I can learn from all of you great people! #masterychat
A3: Your attitude dictates where and how you get there in life. If you can keep a positive attitude even in rought times, you will enjoy the success that much more. #MasteryChat
A2: Write notes to them. When I was in the classroom, I wrote a personalized note to each student prior to end of year testing. It meant a lot to them and to me. #masterychat
A2: "No significant learning happens without significant relationships." Ss are not robots that can passively receive info, and apply strategies/skills. Their emotional needs are important and we need to reach both their hearts and minds through care/ encouragement.#MasteryChat
Q2 - "Nobody [especially students] cares how much you know until they know how much you care."
-John C Maxwell. What does this quote mean to you as a teacher or administrator and how can you apply it to your practice? #masterychat
A3: I think that your attitudes, positive or negative, are what your Ss thrive off of. Like the infamous “I’m bad at math” or “I can’t draw,” kids notice that. If we model a can do mindset, they’ll try even if they’re not successful the 1st time. #MasteryChat
A3: It means your attitude effects your outcome. If you look for the good you will see the good. Everyone faces problems and challenges from time to time; its how you handle them that makes a difference. #MasteryChat
#masterychat A3: This shows how powerful our words are to Ss. If we treat them or speak of them as if they are less capable or accept mediocrity as a permanent condition, they will believe it. We have to show them what growth mindset means and target the adult they will become.
A3: You set the mood for your classroom and for those around you. By remaining positive, smiling, and continuing to grow you will likely have more of a positive impact. #MasteryChat
A3) If you look at things in a positive light and find something to make you smile everyday it will make your life amazing and it will rub off on others. #MasteryChat
A3~progress not perfection; possibilities are limitless when you focus on being open minded & readily available to continuous learning & personal/professional growth #Masterychat
A3 We are responsible for the tone and atmosphere of the room. If we think that it will be terrible, then it will be terrible. If we persevere and believe with all our hearts that we can make magic, then the world becomes magical. Simple. #MasteryChat
A3: One professor changed my mindset at my university, and I actually emailed the president of my university yesterday about this professor because I wanted to do a random act of kindness. She genuinely cared, and that made a world of difference. #MasteryChat
@mr_hayes I was just talking about you to someone. Check out my new website in my profile. It is a work in progress but I would love your feedback! #masterychat
A2 What this means to me is that Ts are still needed in the classroom! There is a wealth of information out there, but Ss need someone who cares about their education & well being to access it for the correct purposes or to process it in ways that suits them best #MasteryChat
A3: If you don't have a vision, a purpose, and a plan ... You dragging students along while you waste time and energy going through the motions. #MasteryChat
A1: My favourite life quote that I speak about every day to my own kids and my students: “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try! #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
#MasteryChat Q3 despite the unexpected failures that you may encounter in life. That is not the final chapter of your story. There should nothing that steals your joy and your determination to do better and be better.
A2- I can’t ask my students to explore and be willing to fail without them believing that they are safe to do so. They have to know I care before they will truly immerse themselves in math. #masterychat
And acknowledging a bad mood is the first step in rerouting. I don't think Ss can get enough great examples of how we can self-regulate and change how we feel. #masterychat
A3: Having a growth mindset means that you believe your Ss will eventually master a skill. Ss may make mistakes along the way, but they are learning and growing. We may need to use different strategies until we find what works best for each S. #MasteryChat
A3: Your mindset is everything. If you have a positive mindset you will move mountains. A negative one will keep fixed where you're at. Think positively of yourself and know that you are making a true impact #MasteryChat
This is one of the most effective strategies I have used for increasing student engagement. One year we studied pobability through Dungeons and Dagons because that is what my students were into! They learned so much! #masterychat
A2) find out what your kids are into, learn about it then use it to teach them about the world/concepts/outcomes. Fortnite map for directions... “the ammo depot is _____ from the meteor crater.” #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A3: This also makes me think of @ToddWhitaker quote, “When the principal sneezes the whole school catches a cold.” You dictate the mood and culture of your building or classroom, largely through your mindset. #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A3: You can control how you react to things always, but you always can’t control the things that happen to you. Focus on what you can control. #MasteryChat
A3: Worked with my colleague @gauchobrad creating a culture that embedded growth mindset. Students knew tasks were not just done...there was feedback either from Ts or Ss to make it better, more effective. #masterychat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
You get what you give - when taken into account with a comment a little made to me this past year - I was asking a group what I could do to make things better to help them. A little replied, "Yell, that's what my teacher does." They are watching & listening. #MasteryChat
A3: Mindset matters in two ways: (1) Teachers must believe *all* students can learn & improve & (2) All students must believe it is okay to try & it’s okay to fail. #MasteryChat#GrowthMindset
#growthmindset and #FirstAttemptInLearning were the first things to come to my mind here. It’s important to lead by example and show students the value in productive struggle. I’m not perfect, but I’m always improving! And I’m determined to better myself every day! 👍#MasteryChat
A4: I made an instructional video for how to work an edtech tool and made a mistake in it! Haha. The students helped me fix it and we grew from it together! #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
Seeing this warms me heart. I’ve found that when we are willing to showcase our own learning, it helps us. Kids need to see that we fail as well when learning new things. #masterychat
A2- I can’t ask my students to explore and be willing to fail without them believing that they are safe to do so. They have to know I care before they will truly immerse themselves in math. #masterychat
A4 - I remember a lot of failures when first creating @thegridmethod but through perseverance it has now helped 1,000's of teachers across the country #teachbetter and reach more students! #masterychat
A3 Mindset and outlook fuel and make/break your classroom. If you drag into work, your students know.
Own your position and be proud of what you have in front of you! #MasteryChat
A4. Failure is part of it. Get up dust yourself off and get back on it. Cant think of any specifics right now. Ill ask my wife when she get home. Im sure she knows some. :) #MasteryChat
Thanks for sharing this, Cameron! I have it open in another tab to watch as soon as the chat is over. I love when we share ideas and resources with each other here in #masterychat
A4 I've failed so many times this year that I can't even begin to tell you what they are. I have ideas and sometimes I don't know where to go with them. That's okay though because I'll continue to fail forward and grow from them #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: Well not sure if it was a fail, but it was a not finish. We had put a lot of work into a great PBL unit and ran out of time going into summer. It feels like the Ss got cheated because they did not have a chance to see it to the end #masterychat
A4. I failed at a parallel co-teaching model. The students were distracted with the other side of the room because my co-teacher and I were just doing direct instruction. It was a sad day in math class that day. 🤣 #masterychat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A1: My favourite life quote that I am passionate about and discuss every day with my students & my own daughters: “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.” #MasteryChat#StarfishClub
A4 I fail 100's of times a week! I fail to finish a blog I am working on. I forget to respond to an email from days ago. I let routines slide at school.
Failure is an old acquaintance of mine that I have learned to embrace as a guide & mentor. Fail. Reflect. Grow. #masterychat
A4- My experiment with going gradeless this past year did not go the way I wanted it to. (read about it here: https://t.co/qiV83gP3FZ) But guess what? I am coming back to it but with more knowledge and a better plan #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
This year my biggest failure was not modeling the things I wanted Ts to do in their classroom; dress up like the character in a book, or the time period they were teaching, or take Ss on a journey that connects to their learning. I'll be doing this next school year! #masterychat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
I like to jump in and try things, sometimes without proper planning. I did a student centered pbl. Didn’t have a great strategy for monitoring daily progress. Has to give an extra week for project completion (outside of class). There are things in place now. #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
Took @alicekeeler Go Slow Coding class for Noobs...definitely. Failed Forward! Shared with my ss. They offered to help. Still failing forward. #MasteryChat
A4: My first year of #flipped & #geniushour had many hiccups and dead-ends, but we're full speed ahead with tweaks, changes, & adjustments #masterychat
A4: Well, I am in the process of building a website and making business cards and contacting area school systems about presenting. I am scared out of my mind, but I have to keep putting myself out there. It just takes one yes to start a avalanche. #masterychat
Thanks for sharing this, Cameron! I have it open in another tab to watch as soon as the chat is over. I love when we share ideas and resources with each other here in #masterychat
Q1 - What's your favorite educational or inspirational quote that you try to live, teach, and grow by? OR What is a quote that you want to live by but can improve on following? #MasteryChat
A4: Tried rapping The Fresh Prince of Belair intro to my class #fail jk Tried using a blank FB template for kids to research and display learning about historical figure #fail I learned my students were in info overload & couldn’t adequately pick info to include #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4 So. Many. Times. Inevitably the timing is off or the tech doesn't work. We power through anyway and talk about how although things don't always go according to plan, we can always learn from the problems we encounter and apply them to the future #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A4: LOL...all the time! 1st year with Chromebooks. I took a lot of chances - I failed a lot, but I also had a great deal of successes. I will reflect on my failures to improve! FAIL=First Attempt In Learning
A4: During my student teaching, I tried to use @classroomq during a math lesson, and it did not work out the way I wanted it to. I paused and told my students that this was not working, and I switched gears. I learned that you do have to make split second decisions. #MasteryChat
A4) before the school year ended and I tried to use PearDeck and it didn’t quite work the way I wanted to. I need to do more research and prep some slides this summer to have for next year. #MasteryChat
A3.1:We also need to make sure Ss have the same positive & driven mindset.
Sometimes it just takes one T to believe in a S.
Be that teacher. They are what they believe. You could be the teacher that makes them believe they can be ANYTHING. ♥️
#HeardItFromHankins#MasteryChat
One of my mantras: "You are loved." I usually say that when a S does or says something that is not convenient for others so all understand love should be unconditional. #masterychat
A4: I wanted to implement a tool I had researched with my kids. However, when presented it was just too far above them. It’s a reminder though I think they’re capable of everything there are things that can wait. So we modified and constructed differently. #masterychat
A4 Tried some new team compositions and some different teaching assignments. Some worked, some didn’t. Lesson: support and implementation are key. #masterychat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: As Ts, we CAN fail. Mistakes are OKAY. We need to TRANSLATE this to our students. We are NOT perfect. We are people. We are wanderers. We are LEARNERS. I tried a creative proj that went haywire, but LEARNED to let go of the reigns & let the Ss take charge! @thegridmethod
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: My students & I tried 3x this past year to get funding for our garden. Two grants & one contest. We learned a lot from the process, but walked away without one dime. They saw me disappointed, but they also saw me not give up. #masterychat
#masterychat A4 One of my goals this year was to encourage more student control of the classroom and their learning. This is always an area that takes a little time to "loosen the reigns" with...to put it simply.
#MasteryChat Q4. I failed at fully differentiating for my Ss. What I have learned is to give them tired students choice assignments. This way they will complete assignments on their academic level. It will then allow me to have time to proactively monitor and do one on ones.
#masterychat A4: Ss asked to make instructional videos in math for next year's Ss as exam entry ticket. In post hoc, Ss told me they would have benefited from a rubric and "draft" deadlines instead of the open-ended way I approached it. Next yr: ask 1st if Ss want that structure.
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: I learned what not to do why ss blogging. I jumped right in with my ss and didn’t have time to really figure it out beforehand. It was awesome. It wasn’t successful but I learned lessons I wouldn’t have had I sat down and mapped it out. #MasteryChat
A4 I tried adding UDL choices to my class, it wasn’t a total failure. I realized that I had too many options and it was a little unmanageable. I also made assumptions about background. Next time I will limit some of the choices and have videos to watch prior #masterychat
A4~ I failed at holding my tongue when a colleague deceived me recently ... should of realized that my tendency to always be transparent isn’t necessarily so for others ~ lesson learned ✅ #masterychat
A4 I have been building the game creation station, will move on to purchasing an Xbox, gaming computers and either a smart tv or projector. We also plan to have a map board for that year’s RPG world, 3d printer and Game Center for challenges and such #games4ed
A4. When demonstrating some diff. types of endothermic and exothermic react. for the Ss to observe, one of the reactions needed quite a bit more time. It didn't react in front of them, which they thought was a fail, but came back to it a couple days later, reaction! #masterychat
A4: We implemented #geniushour three years ago, and while it hasn’t been a failure, there were things we failed at. However, we stuck to the process made improvements, and it has continued to evolve each year. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat On my pracs I made assumptions on what Ss should know. A year 6 Ss said to me "Teach us what we want to know and be yourself." We grew together that day!
Properly training students how to use new technology in the classroom properly and to achieve desired outcomes is huge. It can take several sessions to perfect. #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4) I tried to get the staff on board for a monthly pot luck. Par for the course, but the new year is right around the corner, so another opportunity to try again. #MasteryChat
A3: In education you have to be open minded + be willing to share personal experiences so that your audience can make connections to what you are introducing + constantly be thinking bigger picture 🤔 what is the relevance 2 outside your classroom walls 🌏#MasteryChat#Global
A3: life is a complicated path. We can get tangled into a spiral of negativity by focusing on the negatives, or we can rise above challenges, and do our best every day to go through life with as much grace as possible with positivity, hope, and courage. #MasteryChat
A4 I fail a lot. I forget to send emails or make a phone call. I fail to see some sides of issues. It makes for some interesting discussions but it’s a life lesson. #masterychat
A4: I didn't get to everything I wanted to this year. I am looking back at the calendar and adjusting for next year. Reflection and adjustment is what we do... #masterychat
A4: I have really changed my mindset in recent year when it comes to “failing”. I see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. When my Ss say “fail” we focus on “First Attempt In Learning” and we reflect together and come up with the next steps. #masterychat
A4: I often fail to meet my own expectations, but I have learned that most of the world’s suffering comes from agonizing about the difference between what you want and what you have. I have learned to be present in the moment and to focus on the good. #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: tried using #minecraftedu to teach my students about coal. Didnt go as planned. Kids thanked me for trying. We deeply appreciate student effort and students appreciate it from us as well. #Masterychat
I respectively disagree with you that Ss shouldn't know when we struggle. It isn't something I want them to "worry" about. Yet, I do believe that Ss need to know we struggle & have our moments too. Its a way for them to see the human side & make stronger connections. #MasteryChat
A4: I learned what not to do why ss blogging. I jumped right in with my ss and didn’t have time to really figure it out beforehand. It was awesome. It wasn’t successful but I learned lessons I wouldn’t have had I sat down and mapped it out. #MasteryChat
A4: I failed in a couple of things. I tried genius hour with my 6th graders, and I didn’t plan it out like I should. Epic fail.
I apologized and we moved on. Then, I tried to do this community service project, but ran into problems with the org. #masterychat
A4 I haven't had a failure recently but I certainly had some hiccups with student animation projects. One student had a tech problem but another student had a work around. I said go for it and it worked 💥💥 #MasteryChat
A4: I have failed when implementing some of our STEM projects this past year and had to tweak the lesson as we went. Each individual class is different so I learned to go with the flow, make the necessary changes, and keep trying new things. #MasteryChat
A3: When I think of #mindset I immediately think of #growing into a #growthmindset. As a new teacher 20 yrs ago I was unfamiliar with the term & did not explicitly teach it to Ss. Now I dialogue daily with kids about #failingforward & learning from our mistakes. #MasteryChat
A4: I found out a lot of things that will make doing passion projects next time much more efficient and meaningful for the Ss. They weren’t a total failure, but there’s plenty of room for growth. #masterychat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
I graduated in Dec and took a sub job in sped for the spring. I taught sped with LOTS of guidance (🙏) and prior exp, but no actual sped endorsement. Let’s just say it was a learning experience! (Part 1/2) #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: Ah yes. So many failures. I have started blogging. Then stopped. I have a digital portfolio. Halted again. Just started tweeting again after weeks of hiatus. Need to up my game in leaving positive digital footprints. #MasteryChat
Q4 - "If you haven't failed as a teacher recently, you haven't tried enough new things" - @burgessdave
Have you failed recently when trying something new in school? Tell us about it and share what you learned from the experience." #masterychat
A4: As a new teacher, I know that failure is part of teaching, and it is okay to fail because it is the first attempt in learning. I am not perfect, but I do try to be the best version of myself on a daily basis for my students. #MasteryChat
A4: Needless to say, my 6th graders got a great lesson in failing this year. I had one girl tell me, “It stinks that the community service project didn’t work out, but at least you tried.” #masterychat
A4 I think my biggest fail this year, was not pushing my students as far as they could. I had such a broad mix, so I started them on Owning Our Learning projects. I spent so much time on a few groups, I did not support them enough in their extended projects. #MasteryChat
That’s the important part to remember. When obstacles arise we don’t give up, we come up with a plan on how to overcome the struggle, the process is what makes us stronger! #masterychat
A1: &..."I have four rules in my classroom- Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Make Good Choices. That's still too many, so I sum them all up under one Umbrella Rule- Be Cool." - Doug Robertson @TheWeirdTeacher#MasteryChat#WeirdEd
A4: I tried posting some drive by PD topics/info in our staff lounge. Only a few staff took them. Learned: keep trying other methods to engage Ts in PD. #MasteryChat
A4: Have I failed? NEVER! Said no determined to be innovative & keep up with the times of
kids, education & technology.
Just ask @doriedance & @Ms_Morgan15 if I ever failed.
Point is—we keep on trying & learning so we can provide the best opportunities for kids!

We’ve done “Goodie days” for several year now Nd everyone looks forward to them. Each grade level sponsors a month, creates a theme and decides on what will be served that day. #masterychat
Q5 - "Our job to teach every single learner in our classrooms…not just the easy ones. -@ChadOstrowski. What is something you do to reach ALL students in your classroom? #masterychat
A4 Gave my students much more freedom to choose this year both topics and ways to accomplish the learning targets. Didn't work so well in the beginning. Quickly discovered that it is a process that requires some fine tuning. Great benefits in the end. #masterychat
Just a note guys...QUOTES are only as good as the ACTION they inspire! Live the messages you are sharing, BE the teacher you portray yourself to be! #teachbetter ALWAYS #masterychat#masterychat
A3: I often think about this as I’m teaching. I have to set an example. I have to show my kids I’m willing to improve when I struggle and I’m going to keep going when I make a mistake. I have to look at everyday and be my best! #masterychat
I learned failing in front of the kids was one of the best things for me AND them. I loosened up and stopped fretting abt being perfect. And they saw it’s OK for EVERYONE to make mistakes, as long as we do our best and try again. It hit home with that pop esp! (2/2) #MasteryChat
I’ve worked with Ss in the past that were distrustful of adults who said they cared about Ss. In one case, the kid just fought and fought to prove to himself that I was like everyone else. After a year, he finally saw that I cared about him as a person. #masterychat
A5. As a new teacher, this one is hard for me. Relationships first. Feedback, check-ins, and conferences second. I am learning to be inclusive of all learners and letting things slide if they don't match my plans. #masterychat
Q5 - "Our job to teach every single learner in our classrooms…not just the easy ones. -@ChadOstrowski. What is something you do to reach ALL students in your classroom? #masterychat
A4: I use the phrase "learning experiences" instead of failures as I try new things at school and in life. As long as I continue to work towards my goal, few obstacles are not something to fear. #MasteryChat
A4~ I failed at holding my tongue when a colleague deceived me recently ... should of realized that my tendency to always be transparent isn’t necessarily so for others ~ lesson learned ✅ #masterychat
A5: I was taking the free online grid method course led by the amazing @chadostrowski and really resonated with the story about Jesse. I admit that I fall short in reaching all my Ss which is why I really want to try @thegridmethod due to just starting out. #MasteryChat
A5: Simple. GET TO KNOW the LEARNERS in your class! Observe. LISTEN. DISSECT. Each learner is SPECIAL and it is OUR DUTY to tailor our instruction to each child. Ask questions and COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE! #Masterychat@thegridmethod
A5: I use @Screencastify and I make videos at times where lectures are usually a need. This way, students can value the power of pause AND they can learn at their own pace. I also use #Hyperdocs so I can small group with students to gauge their understanding. #MasteryChat
Q5 - "Our job to teach every single learner in our classrooms…not just the easy ones. -@ChadOstrowski. What is something you do to reach ALL students in your classroom? #masterychat
A5. I teach band. I need every kids to do their part. There are no bench players. I let my kids know that they are important. No matter what their level. #MasteryChat
A5: In order to reach all learners, I survey each student regarding their opinions and suggestions regarding lessons. I ask them what apps they would like to use in class and how they would like to use them. I give them voice in the classroom. It is their classroom. #MasteryChat
A3: That life is only as good as you think that it is. If you live your life as only seeing your glass as only half full, you're going to miss a great deal of it. #MasteryChat
A5) I said this last week, and it seemed to make sense:

A4: I’m worried of failing this upcoming year with all the new things our leader wants us to try. I keep reminding myself to only change what I can handle. Having my PLN has reminded me of this. #MasteryChat
A5: I walk around and learn and play and talk with them like real people with real dreams, plans and great stories and jokes! I “assess” the same concepts a zillion different times and a zillion diff ways so I know what they really know, using ss strengths. #MasteryChat
I jumped off a pedagogical cliff to pilot inquiry-based algebra this year. Ss work in teams & I can more efficiently make sure every S gets what they need. #masterychat
A5 Connect with your kids. Share your passions, learn about theirs. Make their Voices visible. Give them an audience. Make every single one of them a ROCKSTAR! #MasteryChat
Self pacing, individualized final exams based on standards, passion projects related to course content, retake a test whenever during the same semester, no late work deductions, feedback versus scores. #MasteryChat
Q5 - "Our job to teach every single learner in our classrooms…not just the easy ones. -@ChadOstrowski. What is something you do to reach ALL students in your classroom? #masterychat
I learned failing in front of the kids was one of the best things for me AND them. I loosened up and stopped fretting abt being perfect. And they saw it’s OK for EVERYONE to make mistakes, as long as we do our best and try again. It hit home with that pop esp! (2/2) #MasteryChat

#masterychat A5: Offer re-assessment ANY TIME. Think Disney. Instead of a monorail which leaves....and is gone if you're on it or not, Re-assessment in my class is like the People-Mover in Tomorrowland. You can get on at ANY time and yet we're always moving. Slowly.

One time I began showing Stand by Me to highlight epic journeys to students with special needs. It was not the TV version. I forgot how many not-for-school words there were. Too bad I couldn't show it... great movie.

A5 I added @Seesaw this year and that has allowed me to differentiate more and check in on almost all Ss everyday. I provide feedback on their pieces and connect with their families. It has really helped with relationships. #masterychat
A5: As an RTI Coordinator, a BIG part of my days is used to support and equip Ts and staff to ensure all learners are receiving the appropriate level of rigor...and fun! :) #MasteryChat

#MasteryChat On my practicum last year I made a point of greeting all Ss individually each morning and having a brief chat! I also shared my experiences with them.
A4: I failed working to get out staff involved with Twitter. I will keep on working to get the word out about how much learning and how many connections are made - we will get there. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat to reach each learner you must know the learner. Taking time to know your Ss and incorporating their interest in the lesson. This is what I have found is the key to fullnSs buy in. Letting your students know that you care about them and their success.
A5: In order to reach all learners, I survey each student regarding their opinions and suggestions regarding lessons. I ask them what apps they would like to use in class and how they would like to use them. I give them voice in the classroom. It is their classroom. #MasteryChat

Dealing with failure and disappointment are valuable skills. Teachers and parents who try to protect kids from them do more harm than good. #masterychat
A5 I really struggle with this sometimes. I was never the disengaged or disinterested kid, so I find it tough to empathize with them. I try to provide as much choice and opportunity for student voice as possible so each person feels like they can contribute #masterychat
A5: When I taught/coached, I tried to be involved in multiple student activities. I coached football, but also coached the Quiz Bowl team, and was the STUCO sponsor. This allowed me to connect with a wider array of students. #MasteryChat

A6: I try every year to let an interest of my students inspire me to try something new. Sometimes it works & it’s a great memory. Sometimes it’s a struggle. Either way I am honest with my students. #MasteryChat
A6. I smile and share my experiences with others, too! Learn to laugh and share experiences, give shoulders to lean on when needed. Be there to listen! #masterychat
A6 I own my failures every time I mess up. I openly reflect with my students when things go well and when things don't go so smoothly. I never claim to be perfect and I always apologize when I've been unfair #masterychat
A5 As an ELL teacher differentiation is the norm. My Ss are at all different levels of second language acquistion. One thing I do to reach all my students is use @Newsela for reading differentiation. Great tool. #masterychat
A6) I openly discuss my educational and life, within reason, failures. I often bring course work to my students from my courses to share what I struggle with, #MasteryChat
FINAL 10 Minutes...DON't YOU DARE GO ANYWHERE! We're going to keep this thing going strong until the last second!!! You with me...STRONGER TOGETHER!!! #masterychat
A6:I show kids I am REAL by showing them I am not perfect & apologize when needed.
Saying sorry can be difficult to do, esp. to your Ss. Show them you are human. Show them you are REAL. Show them you make mistakes too. Show them your love & they’ll show you respect.
#MasteryChat
A6: I don’t hide who I am as a person. I tell my Ss how I was bullied, so they know why I get so mad when Ss are mean to each other. I tell them the dumb things I do. My wife has come to class and confirmed those stories. #masterychat
A6: I’m a REAL educator because I don’t claim to “know it all.” So colleagues will approach me to be a sound board. I will listen, while they here their idea out loud. When sharing practices, of course I incoporate struggles and failures. #masterychat
A6 I talk to the kids about places I go, hobbies, things I'm learning. I have conversations with them about their interests, hobbies, lessons, trips etc. Communicate 😀 #MasteryChat
A7: Many great ideas were mentioned in this chat. I am going to focus on being authentic and being more reflective. I know I have shortcomings, but every single day is a new day, and I can start fresh. #MasteryChat
A7 - So many I can't just choose one! Thank you all for an inspiring ACTION oriented chat! I can't wait to put these inspirational words into action helping teachers, students and schools! #masterychat
A7: Nice reminder to share our victories AND struggles with students as well as colleagues. Be honest when sharing your stories, people will respect that and you will be seen as more relatable. #masterychat

A6: when we share not just our successes but our failures too, it creates a level of transparency our students respect. This is how authentic relationships are established. #MasteryChat
I plan to create a bulletin board that shows all the pictures of me as a 7th grader compared to the pictures of me now. I want to put myself in the lives of 13 year olds. Thats how they will see me beyond just being their teacher. #masterychat

“If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea” #MasteryChat
This chat reminded me that I have an amazing support system right here, and last night, I had tears in my eyes because a former professor donated 100 dollars to my new classroom, and it meant a lot that she believed in me. That moment meant a lot. #MasteryChat
A6. I model what I preach;) ❤️ to learn new & innovative strategies for my kids, OUR kids! Failing enthusiastically with them - not afraid for them to see me mess up & laugh about it🤣 Not take myself too seriously-enjoy life-laugh 😂,❤️, 🤗, dance parties 🎉 #masterychat

I am always ready to try something new and admit when it doesn’t work. I also like to do debriefs (thanks @Wake_UTD_PBL) with my Ss just to break down how things went with any new activity. It is an opportunity us to all be honest together. #masterychat
