A1: "Culturally Relevant teaching is not the same as assimilation. Culturally Responsive teaching is valuing a student's culture by embedding features of their culture into instruction." (Vavrus, 2002) #mdeschat

A1: Culturally responsive teaching requires intentionally providing experiences which enable Ss to mitigate cultural differences by valuing one another. #mdeschat

A1: As learners, we all have the opportunity to share our experiences in a manner that advances the learning of the group. This awareness helps develop an appreciation for cultural diversity and how varying perspectives deepens learning. #mdeschat

A2: I feel like it comes down to building relationships - if we can lower the affective filter for students, we can engage in the sorts of conversations that let students share their truth openly #mdeschat

A3. Make sure that class assignments invite children to share their culture. Draw their attention to various cultures through rich literature #mdeschat

A3: The arts provide excellent examples for students to see themselves and connect to experiences that showcase excellence. The key is building a relationship with the student in order to know who they are. #mdeschat
A3: Engage students with community members, peers, and families to uncover the excellence around them rather than simply utilizing âpedestal people.â #mdeschat

A4: Listen. Students will tell you a lot when you just let them talk about what matters to them. Organic conversation has always been the best way for me. #mdeschat
A5: Assess school climate and be transparent about the school climate when hiring Ts of color. Hire for mission and orient/re-orient faculty and staff so there is an understanding of the value of cultural diversity. #mdeschat
A5: recruit IN your community. People there will be much more representative of your students than your HR prospects. Plus career changers from the community bring other dimensions to culture than academia. Lived experience is powerful. #mdeschat
A5: Educators of color want a school system where they have opportunities for advancement that doesnt necessarily take them out of the classroom #mdeschat

I think we can be a part of facilitating the conversation, but (1) cultural proficiency is a personal journey, and (2) it is not the responsibility of the oppressed to instruct those oppressing- if a colleague has biases, they have to take time to research #mdeschat
A6. Have and display empathy, share ideas & be open to others' ideas, intentional collaboration w/ others, and establish common goals & values #mdeschat
We should not assume that a person of another culture WANTS the role, the TEAM should be diverse, yet SHOULD include someone from the group that is being overlooked as you might get more of the same without voices from ALL groups! #mdeschat

A6: I think we could begin from a point if inquiry, precluding assumptions and listening to one another. No one can be coerced into open-mindedness. But being a pacesetterwoukd be an excellent place to start. #mdeschat
Important thought about âawarenessâ and culturally responsive teaching- teachers need help in learning what they donât know; theyâll need others to raise that awareness #mdeschat
