Q1. In any 2x1, 3x1 set do you allow your backside DB to play man vs #1 or is it pre-determined? Do you have a base rule that you follow in that situation? #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Jan 29 @ 8:08 PM EST

  • CoachWilliams22 Jan 29 @ 8:08 PM EST
A1: Depends on hash/d&d/personnel. We definitely do, but if it’s their dude we will usually have help. #swarmfbchat
  • DwayneDuBose4 Jan 29 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: base rule is press man on 1. But like coach said gotta add support from an lb or safety vs a stud #swarmfbchat
  • teshda Jan 29 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1. We are going put that corner on an island and play in your face man. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • COACHeDOBBINS Jan 29 @ 8:09 PM EST
A1: I leave it up to the CB but he has to give the right call to the safety #swarmfbchat

  • CoachAMoss Jan 29 @ 8:09 PM EST
Any 3x1 we have a few different calls but would depend on if they isolated their best guy. Will take our chances if we like the matchup #swarmfbchat

  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: yes we do depending on the call if it’s a base coverage or it’s a rule. #swarmfbchat

  • Coach_JRogers Jan 29 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1: Base rule is to play man on him. Then depending on WR to single side will have variations on how we play him. #swarmfbchat
  • Skillutt28 Jan 29 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1. Yes we will man up the backside at times. We make that call and decision. #swarmfbchat
  • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST
Just a follow up that came to mind reading the responses...how many times will you face an OC that will put his BEST WR to the backside? #swarmfbchat
  • teshda Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST

  • CoachDiG Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: based off support. Have to work in tandem with what is left to that side. Depends where you are bothering from #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • Sizemore48 Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: Depends on who their 1 is. If he’s a dude we have safety bracket. If not we’ll play some variant of Cover 2 #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachKizer Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: Depends on the gameplan, player that is the backside 1 and a little on the run game of the team playing. If the 1 is the playmaker we will check coverage to roll to him. If not then man up backside is what we do. #swarmfbchat
  • JLBrown64 Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST
Coach Brown QB/LB Coach El Molino High School Forestville, CA #swarmfbchat
  • JLBrown64 Jan 29 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: We’re more scheme based on the backside. If they have a stud at WR then we won’t run man. But, we will also scheme to send our OLB if we feel our man can get the job done. #swarmfbchat
  • coachskender65 Jan 29 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: it really depends on what kind of dude the single receiver is and if we like the 1 on 1 matchup. In our quarters cov we will roll the safety down to get extra hat in box. In 3x1 we have coverages to get safety backside for the single receiver if we need to. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:12 PM EST
It’s not often especially in HS we see mainly a rabbit over there and most of the focus is on the strength side #swarmfbchat

  • CoachJonesUHS Jan 29 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1.) Man him up. If their 1 is a stud we’ll bring help from a S or OLB based off their strength and ours. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachcedric Jan 29 @ 8:13 PM EST
Cedricallen #swarmfbchat we play lots of man press, but played more zone this year 1 High Concepts and installed the Iowa State Dime last spring played a lot of it this year
  • TheMorningJoe16 Jan 29 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: 2x1 will most likely have some help over the top depending on opponent. 3x1 he’s mostly on an island ideally if WR is a “dude” we will have our best on him. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 29 @ 8:13 PM EST

  • CoachGrayvold Jan 29 @ 8:15 PM EST
All depends if that guys a dude or not. We have answers for both if he is or isn’t. Also depends where he’s at on the field. Is he into the boundary or the field will determine that. #swarmfbchat

Q2. IF you do not play a Robber Concept vs 3x1, what coverage is your favorite vs that formation? Do you try to avoid displacing LBers pre-snap? #swarmfbchat
  • coachcedric Jan 29 @ 8:16 PM EST
We are Bear front with Hybrid Nickel so we jump into old school Invert Robber Invert Coverage I try to take my CB out of run game #swarmfbchat
  • JLBrown64 Jan 29 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: We typically roll our backside safety and have him leverage 3-2 reads. We rarely move our backside OLB so nothing backside hits big, but our playside OLB will walk out to be able to collision and wall 2. MLB has inside stuff from 3 #swarmfbchat
  • CoachKizer Jan 29 @ 8:16 PM EST
A2: If we are not robbing we will roll the DBs were we want them to be sound in coverage. Try not to displace LBs to keep them sound in the run game. #swarmfbchat
  • mzito59 Jan 29 @ 8:17 PM EST
In my opinion you have to play trips with more than 1coverage . Unless you just have better dudes than the other team you will get exposed . We will roll strong trips(I know that’s a cuss word to a lot of coaches ) I like stubbie also. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • COACHeDOBBINS Jan 29 @ 8:17 PM EST
    A2: Quarters Match I should clarify #swarmfbchat
  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:17 PM EST
A2: I would say 32 or 31 is the adjustment along with man across the board with an blitz thrown in. And yeah try to keep the box sometime or give a different look based on the passing scheme #swarmfbchat
  • CoachDiG Jan 29 @ 8:18 PM EST
A3: love match. Olb hang on # vert #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachAMoss Jan 29 @ 8:18 PM EST
Played Saban's "stubby" call in past where #1 is man lock & #2 are played by both S where they play 2 Read/Palms look. Our two for their two #swarmfbchat

Q2. IF you do not play a Robber Concept vs 3x1, what coverage is your favorite vs that formation? Do you try to avoid displacing LBers pre-snap? #swarmfbchat
  • mikestauffer Jan 29 @ 8:18 PM EST
A1: per game plan. Might be M/M; might hi/low bracket with LB or Saf. It would be pre-determined before snap but mix it up. #swarmfbchat
  • mzito59 Jan 29 @ 8:18 PM EST
Also we will do different thinks to the 1 wr side . Depends on game plan . A couple of examples ...we can play cone if he’s a stud ...cover 2 on him and the rb #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachJonesUHS Jan 29 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2.) Will generally roll our S to the 3rd, Corner plays the flat while reading 2-1 first. 2 goes Vert, man up. 2 goes in, eyes on 1. OLB drops back to middle, and backside plays deep third #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • Sizemore48 Jan 29 @ 8:19 PM EST

A2 We have 4 3x1 coverages that we work on constantly. Game film of the opponent, tendencies and such, dictate which 2 will be our automatics for that week. If we have to adjust and a different cover is used...we will have worked on it that week. #repit #swarmfbchat

  • DwayneDuBose4 Jan 29 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: we usually play solo and special exclusively. depends on the safeties. This past season we had a kid that could go get it so we played more qtrs with eyes on the qb. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachGrayvold Jan 29 @ 8:20 PM EST
QQH is always a good one. We’ve got about 5 different ways we can play it out of our base. Can also just zero it up if you feel risky. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachcollins18 Jan 29 @ 8:20 PM EST
Our goal is to always keep our 4-2 box. We love our 2-read coverages and we will mix a few different variations of those to trips. Also like to rob number 2 in trips. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • Coach_JRogers Jan 29 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: Like to keep Lbs in box and roll the safeties. Will play some zone but also like to play man and bring heat and make the ball come out quick. #swarmfbchat

A2: we try to avoid displacing the mike but in solo we have to displace that mike to get a wall on #3 up #swarmfbchat
  • Coachw66Eric Jan 29 @ 8:21 PM EST
We have an up and back rule. With #3 if they run any route up or back towards the ball we man (unless shallow) anything out we have our push rules and we push the route concept to next available defender #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachWilliams22 Jan 29 @ 8:21 PM EST

  • Coachw66Eric Jan 29 @ 8:23 PM EST
A3: we use 1 rule step. We want a clear picture for our safety corner. Once we get Into 5yards it gets cloudy. So our read is on first step of #2 receiver #swarmfbchat

    A2) COVER 0 #swarmfbchat it's always a good answer
  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:24 PM EST
A3 CB playing off 3-5 in basketball stance, S is over number 2 or on hash. Reading 2 to 1 for both of 2 goes short CB got him and S got 1 and Vice versus if we get two verts pick up WR in front of you. #swarmfbchat

  • COACHeDOBBINS Jan 29 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3: ASKA really doesn’t change primarily just assignment and alignment. Corner #1 vertical and corner, safety vertical/post, LBs 5-6yadds hitch and out. MLB has any drags #swarmfbchat
  • CoachWelden Jan 29 @ 8:25 PM EST
A1: 2x1 and 3x1 we play different, we will allow bs db so go man but have other options if going against a dude, help under or over, can run C3, c4 or man to 3x1 #swarmfbchat
  • coachskender65 Jan 29 @ 8:25 PM EST
A2: we have several coverages we can do vs a 3x1. You have to have some different bullets in the gun to take away what the offense wants to do. We focus on a few coverages based off of scouting. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3 I truly believe in this coverage on the HS level if you can get your guys to understand the concept of it you can play it versus any sets #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Jan 29 @ 8:25 PM EST
A3: Outside by a yard and back 3-4. Open stance to read #2. Funnel #1 and react to #2s movement if outside route. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachSlade_Cal Jan 29 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2- I don't care what coverage you play vs trips, you better have a wall 3 player or you will give up hitch and rpo all the way down the field. It doesn't bother me to displace my mike. There is 1 ball, 1 back, you just have to defend 1 gap. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachKroell Jan 29 @ 8:26 PM EST
A2) void the flat. Corner and safety drop based on release of #3. Get 2 over 3 and olb is critical railing #2. keep 2 over 1 to the single and play what we want. #swarmfbchat

    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachCLewis87 Jan 29 @ 8:27 PM EST
A1: imo depends on personnel. If that’s their dude, I’m giving the corner help. If C3 scheme, he could play loose and will can undercut post/slant. If C4/2, can press and have safety help. 3x1 depends on rb: strong>bs Island; wk>safety help. #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 29 @ 8:06 PM EST

  • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 29 @ 8:28 PM EST
Q4. When you face a TE that is a good receiver and blocker, how do you best align your secondary to take away the pass game AND defend the run vs the extra gaps created? #swarmfbchat

  • coachdlc Jan 29 @ 8:29 PM EST
A1. Depends on the backside players skill set and the skill set of my CB. If we can man, we will, if we have to offer help, (split field) we will. If he’s no threat, we will kick coverage to play side. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CoachAMoss Jan 29 @ 8:30 PM EST
C plays 5 yds off with eyes on #2 feeling #. C takes first to flat S takes anything over top/deep. If both run deep obviously both of our guys run deep also #swarmfbchat
  • CoachWilliams22 Jan 29 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: This is why I love quarters coverage. Can get coverage on the TE and an extra hat in the box for the run fit. Helps to align a DE on him in a 6 or 9 and deny vertical release. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • CODY_GARDNER Jan 29 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4)Gotta beat on him, every snap, no plays off. #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Jan 29 @ 8:30 PM EST
A4: 3-4 defense allows us to get an OLB in his face at the LOS. Safety will play closer to help react to TE outs/drags. Also helps with getting extra player in Box. #swarmfbchat

  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 I’m curious to see the response on this one I would say a 32 call or an palms call and get the LB to lineup heads up or a wide 9 on him #swarmfbchat
  • tothehouse Jan 29 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 - Put our dude on him and beat him up on the LOS. Depending on what the formation is will determine where the M backer fills and where the FS fits. Coverage again depends on formation. #swarmfbchat

  • CoachJonesUHS Jan 29 @ 8:31 PM EST
A4 really is based off what they give us with the formation. But with no WR on TE side, bring #1 Corner to his side. S on top of TE 8 yards off. Biggest KEY? The knees. Key the knees every single play. Will tell you pass or run. Easy to teach and learn at HS level #swarmfbchat

A:4 if he is attached or unattached is the best tell. If he is attached we make sure to disrupt off the line with either DL or LB an off to safety. If he is unattached we play our basic coverage over them. #swarmfbchat

Q3: C at 5 with back to boundary and eyes on #2. Bball shuffle on snap. If 2 attacks flats take him. If 2 is vert (upfield for three shuffles) take all of 1. Safety inside eye 2 at 7+ depends on ability. Read 2. If he attacks flats get over 1. If vert take all of 2. #swarmfbchat

A4. We can cheat down the OLB to get hands in & not have free release. Allows to help with run faster at him. Also cheat over our SLB to help take away pass release. #swarmfbchat
  • CoachWelden Jan 29 @ 8:32 PM EST
A4: playing either C3 or C1, bringing that 8th player closer to box and getting hands on te #swarmfbchat
  • DwayneDuBose4 Jan 29 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: corners back foot at 6. 1 yd outside #1. See the q through 2. Read step take all route by 2 under 5. Roughly 2 steps. If two up periphery #1 through the q. Safeties 12-1. Tempo pedal vision on 2. 2 up turn into him. 2 out find 1 #swarmfbchat

Q4. When you face a TE that is a good receiver and blocker, how do you best align your secondary to take away the pass game AND defend the run vs the extra gaps created? #swarmfbchat
  • CoachGrayvold Jan 29 @ 8:34 PM EST
Quarters is a beautiful thing. Roll your safety down to a tighter alignment. Anything up or out he’ll take. Anything across zone your quarter and help vs the post. #swarmfbchat

  • CoachKroell Jan 29 @ 8:34 PM EST
A3) only use it to boundary. Corner is 1x5 outside 1 tilted in to ball, keying 2, shuffle step. Use 5 yard rule. If it’s cloudy keep sinking. Safety is at 12 yds. #swarmfbchat

  • CoachCLewis87 Jan 29 @ 8:34 PM EST
A2: I like stress coverage if they put their best one to the boundary, that way you can bracket him. But, if they are heavy 4vert AND the qb can make the throw to field vertical, I’d go with quarters and match it. RB align determines bs cov #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 29 @ 8:13 PM EST
Q2. IF you do not play a Robber Concept vs 3x1, what coverage is your favorite vs that formation? Do you try to avoid displacing LBers pre-snap? #swarmfbchat
  • Coach_JRogers Jan 29 @ 8:34 PM EST
A4: Going to align OLB tighter on him and be physical with him. Get a safety down to help on coverage. Can also move our front and align olb in a 6/6i with safety rolled down. #swarmfbchat

  • Coach___TR Jan 29 @ 8:35 PM EST
A1: We mix it up. We have complete control over our BS. Our C can mix up his alignment and look based off of the call we send it from sideline. We don’t run a lot of man, but will make an island call for the C if we want to use the BS into run game/blitz/etc #swarmfbchat

A4) 2/2 if the te is a nub I like playing a 6 on him and let the 6 control the c gap . We allow the cb to play deep 3rds and force he has one read (the te). If he’s not isolated jam him on the line and allow the zone defenders to help . #swarmfbchat

Q5. With playing a 6-man/7-man/8-man box, do you utilize any 2-deep man under schemes? Who do you designate as the player(s) that is/are displaced by this coverage vs spread? Do you bring in an extra DB for a DE/DL/LB? #swarmfbchat
  • coachsmitty_43 Jan 29 @ 8:37 PM EST

A5 yes because it’s HS Football take a risk drop one of those stand up ends into a scheme or play straight up C2 #swarmfbchat
  • CoachAMoss Jan 29 @ 8:40 PM EST
We got a lil unorthodox with it this past season. Put our C 8 yds off & S at 6 to help in run. Basically 9 man box. Vs pass we ran S to flat & C had deep coverage. Or we would go straight man #swarmfbchat

A1. We tag the weak side of the coverage. Lock=man, High=off apex zone, Stick=inside force leverage. It allows the weak side players to all know responsibilities. No tag means we play the coverage across the board.#swarmfbchat

  • DwayneDuBose4 Jan 29 @ 8:41 PM EST

We have multiple tags that are all part of our camp install in our quarters system, which we will use by game plan and personnel. What does the offense want to do out of trips? If they use TE trips (Trey) we are more likely to play man and tie the BS to #3 vertical. #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 29 @ 8:06 PM EST
Q1. In any 2x1, 3x1 set do you allow your backside DB to play man vs #1 or is it pre-determined? Do you have a base rule that you follow in that situation? #swarmfbchat
  • CoachBillups_ Jan 29 @ 8:41 PM EST
A5: and it’s also going be base off the front and what your trying to do. I think most of us base it off the talent of the offense #swarmfbchat
  • coachsmitty_43 Jan 29 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: We usually carry 2-3 basic ways to cover the Trips...All predicated on the route concepts we need to stop to win...we try to make you throw the routes that are either tougher to complete and/or the ones that aren’t your bread n butter #swarmfbchat
  • NMaksimchuk Jan 29 @ 8:42 PM EST

A3: I’ve tried to keep our 2-read rules as simple as possible. For the FS his rules are Read #2 and Up=Man, Out=#1, In=Zone Read Qb eyes. For the C they’re just flipped. Read #2 Up=Man1, Out=#2, In=Stay #1 #swarmfbchat

A5) I will on 3rd and long . Most teams have two guys they want to get to the ball to on 3rd down . We will double their two best wr’s and make them throw it to their 3rd option to get the 1st. Make one of their lesser players beat you !! #swarmfbchat

A3: 4 yards o/s lev #1, square stance (basketball), eyes on 2, shuffle tech, trap flat if 2 breaks out under 8y, try to give hands to 1 to funnel to Safety. Safety can pass off slant by 2 and become robber #swarmfbchat
  • coachdavis86 Jan 29 @ 8:46 PM EST

  • coachtwich Jan 29 @ 8:47 PM EST
Surprisingly, less than you may think. Must have different ways to play a stud, however. At the very least, be able to play press man inside leverage and then play hard C2 outside leverage. More important to have more change ups (off-technique/invert) vs RPO teams #swarmfbchat
    • rmacblue - Moderator Jan 29 @ 8:11 PM EST
Just a follow up that came to mind reading the responses...how many times will you face an OC that will put his BEST WR to the backside? #swarmfbchat
  • CoachV_OHS Jan 29 @ 8:51 PM EST
A1) Depends on who we have at corner, but my preference is to play man and add a player in the box. Base rule in 3x1 is some sort of trips coverage. 2x1 is usually a cov2/4 to slot and man or 4 to the single side. #swarmfbchat
    In reply to @rmacblue
  • coachsmitty_43 Jan 29 @ 8:51 PM EST
A4: We have a few ways to play the TE...stay 4 down w/ DE in a 6 knifed into C gap on snap, SS n FS will pattern matchup creating somewhat of a bracket..or reduce SS onto TE on LOS creating an under front, this gets hands on TE vs both run and Pass making life tough #swarmfbchat
  • CoachCLewis87 Jan 29 @ 8:51 PM EST
A4: I would play in a 9 mostly to disrupt his release, play a 6 in some run situations as change up. ILB in a 50, “nickel” apex in trey. ILB, Funnel him to safety or flat defender. Basically treat him as stud #3 slot coverage-wise #swarmfbchat

  • CoachCLewis87 Jan 29 @ 8:55 PM EST
I think many either play right and left sides or put him as boundary 1. Rationale would be to either get him a 1on1 or get it to your best guy with a Hs qb who may not have a huge arm. Trend is becoming to move him around though #swarmfbchat

We played what many consider “country” C4 but changed it slightly last year by teaching our safety to play Robber tech vs #3 and line up over him reading 3-2. We also carry “Solo” with BS poaching #3. Mike in C4 has to hip the OT into a 50 to wall #3 (B gap vs run) #swarmfbchat
