Thanks for the shares, everyone! I'm heading over to #nt2t to discuss John Hattie’s 8 Mind Frames for Educators. Have a great weekend (and vacation for some)! #pd4uandme
Please introduce yourself! Even if you are just lurking today, please say hi! As a reminder, we are going to discuss John Hattie’s 8 Mind Frames for Educators. Read more here: https://t.co/JN6Kd3GU1K#NT2t
WELCOME EVERYONE! I am Julie, co-founder of #NT2t -work in higher ed as a tech trainer, live in Missouri USA. My state of mind right now is excited because I get to see Hamilton tonight!
Hi my names Rachel I am a preservice elementary and special ed major at grove city college in pa! I’m excited to learn and share all I’ve learned today #nt2t
Hi, Julie. I was just thinking about lurking, but it felt like you were calling me out. So here goes...
Hey, everyone. I'm a livelong student. Nice to join in on #NT2t today.
My name is Joe Ford and I am one year away from my student teaching in the Graduate Teaching Certification program at @AvilaUniversity and this is my first Twitter Chat #nt2t#avilaedtech
Mind Frame 1: “My fundamental task is to evaluate the effect of my teaching on students’ learning and achievement.”
Q1: How do you measure the effect of your teaching on students’ learning and achievement? #NT2t
A1: one way is to look at how eager the kids are to return to their work. Test scores don't always measure the appropriate learning that's taking place. #NT2t
A1: When you use formative assessment of students, you are really reflecting on your own teaching and if you have designed the best learning experience for them. The adjust, constantly. #nt2t
Mind Frame 1: “My fundamental task is to evaluate the effect of my teaching on students’ learning and achievement.”
Q1: How do you measure the effect of your teaching on students’ learning and achievement? #NT2t
You totally read my mind Tammy! As a new teacher, I can see the focus would be on scores, but as a veteran teacher, the focus shifts to the attitudes/excitement of the students. #NT2t
A1: one way is to look at how eager the kids are to return to their work. Test scores don't always measure the appropriate learning that's taking place. #NT2t
#nt2t A1 It's not about test scores, it's about engagement The more engaged Ss are with each other & Ts, the more effective I've been #LearningIsAVerb Ss should be active & engaged
A1: Informal assessments such as games (technology related or not) allows you to see which students understand the material and which students are struggling without the pressure of a quiz or test. My favorite is Kahoot! #sbpdchat#NT2t
A1. I think you can measure the effect of your teaching by how much studnets are engaging in the lesson and how eager/excited they are about continuing to learn about it #nt2t
A1 - Measuring learning is recursive and lifelong. It needs to be more than just a test or an essay, but application of ideas, concepts, information, and strategy to situations inside and outside the classroom. #nt2t
A1. I think it is how well students can engage with you about the lesson. If they do not feel like they know they know the material, then it may be time to rethink and reteach. #nt2t
So true. I used to have favourite teachers in school, and the reason I liked them is because their classes
• were memorable
• made me feel valued
• were understandable
I loved attending such classes.
#NT2t
A1: There is an interesting trend in answers here: test scores vs kids attitudes. For our new educators, student engagement is a much better measure of student success. Take time to sit back and watch HOW your kids are learning & use that info as you plan. #NT2t
Mind Frame 2:
“The success and failure of my students’ learning is about what I do or don’t do. I am a change agent.”
Q2: What does it look like/sound like to be a change agent? #NT2t
I teach Social Studies ... the true measure of my effect comes years later ... when I am still having debates about political issues with former students on SM and they are putting forth constructive arguments. #nt2t
#nt2t I measure my effect and achievement as being good. Trying to reach the mind and heart of some difficult students seems can be frustrating at times but with persistence and love with care they can be reached and taught. #Gen2108
Q2: to be a change agent means to be constantly looking for ways to improve student engagement and learning. We need to be able to adapt and change when we need to :) #gccedu#Nt2t
A2: might feel lonely at times. Looks like lots of relationship-building and sounds like discussions and also lots of listening to Ts talk about the current situation. #NT2t
A2) I don't think this means that you're the only change agent, but can lead the change with the input of students, families, and the larger community. Do you know what they expect of you? #nt2t
Mind Frame 2:
“The success and failure of my students’ learning is about what I do or don’t do. I am a change agent.”
Q2: What does it look like/sound like to be a change agent? #NT2t
A1: I use a stop light strategy for exit ticket reviews. After each lesson, the students write their exit tickets on post it notes and place their work on either red, yellow, or green lights. Green for got it, yellow for almost there and red for need more help #nt2t
A2: Getting to know the students well and how the learn the best is important when being a teacher of impact. They are able to modify the lesson when necessary to improve learning #nt2t
#nt2t#NGSS has moved sci Ts from educators to facilitators I see the change when I turn Ss ?s back on them to promote their self & grp discovery of #phenomenon I change by not monopolizing the classroom
A2; For me, being a change agent means I am sitting on the floor/chair or wherever the kids are and actually engaging with them. Change starts with modelling and engagement.#NT2t
Listening helps. Feedback and suggestions surveys are always useful for teachers to assess themselves. A community that cares is a community that shares. #NT2t
A2: For me, it means assessing the currently situation and working as a team with students to try new strategies and being TRANSPARENT about the process with them. #nt2t
Mind Frame 2:
“The success and failure of my students’ learning is about what I do or don’t do. I am a change agent.”
Q2: What does it look like/sound like to be a change agent? #NT2t
A2 - I am trying to be one in my school right now and sometimes it looks like you are speaking another language. I explain ideas or information that I am looking at to other teachers and I get an inquisitive look. Then they get it and the movement starts. #nt2t
A2. I think being a change agent looks like someone trying new things, maybe even failing sometimes, to achieve their desired change. It is the teacher being involved actively in learning and putting things in to effect #nt2t
A2 A change agent looks like you and I. A change agent is some one who cares, loves, is concerned, and understanding when it come to there students. You want them to go far and beyond when it comes to their education #nt2t#Gen2108
A2: I do whatever it takes for my students to feel successful. I emphasize trying makes better, not perfect. We need to be willing to make mistakes, but learn from them. I openly admit when I make mistakes in class and encourage them to do the same. #nt2t
I know from all of my classes at school that if I am not engaged in the lesson I am somewhere else mentally and couldn't care less about what is being taught. It's so important to get students of all ages excited about what they're learning #nt2t
My favorite days as a teacher is when the kids would say "Mrs Szaj, we didn't do math today." I would just smile because they did "math" all day long! #NT2t
Exactly. I think a lot of teachers hold back not because it is too much work (it isn't) or time (its not), its because they don't have the knowledge they need to develop these skills. That is where we come in and help. #nt2t
Well said, Lyndsey. When students realise that teachers are as them and make mistakes, too, it's easier for them to connect with those teachers. Such teachers have great influence in students' lives. #NT2t
Yes! And I’ll make a data chart. It’s their favorite part of the day. When they see, “How are we doing?” pop up on our smart board, they cheer. They love it. #NT2t
#nt2t#NGSS has moved sci Ts from educators to facilitators I see the change when I turn Ss ?s back on them to promote their self & grp discovery of #phenomenon I change by not monopolizing the classroom
Listening helps. Feedback and suggestions surveys are always useful for teachers to assess themselves. A community that cares is a community that shares. #NT2t
A2: lot of love and attention. getting down and dirty with the students lets them know that the classroom is a collaborative effort. it belongs to everyone there. #avilaedtech#nt2t
Good for you Matthew! it's tough to take the lead on this but when things click...oh my gosh...it is amazing! If you need support - feel free to reach out here! #NT2t
Q3: I firmly agree with this, the impact we make as teachers can affect assessments taken by students. I know sometimes though students aren’t the best test-takers. #Nt2t#gccedu
#nt2t A3 Disagree...kind of Yes assessment is about my impact, but it's also about the communication between Ts & Ss My Ss success is less about just me & more about us working & communicating together
A3 - I think assessment is a tool to understand impact and retool teaching to expand impact. However, summative, standardized assessments should not be the only tool for measuring students growth. #nt2t
A3: This is tough, especially for our new educators in the chat because the pressure for high performance is real. If you could walk away with knowing "assessment" doesn't always mean "test" that would be great. A smile can be all the feedback you need. #NT2t
Yes a community that cares, with communication, love, understanding, parents and teachers together is a great formula for students to open up and want to learn. #NT2t#Gen2108
They shouldn't be the only measurement, yes. I think how students take tests depends on a lot of variables like their mental state and situations. Sometimes even good students who learn well don't perform as well in assessments.
#NT2t
A3: Some students just are not good test takers. However, we need to be sure the students are grasping the material. There’s a difference between knowledge and assessment taking skills. Assessment is only part of the picture. #Nt2t
A3. This is kind of difficult. I can see why assessment can be about my impact, but I also know as a student that assessments are not always accurate measures of what I know and the teacher's impact. I'm somewhere inbetween for this #nt2t
Exactly. I added a portfolio my first year teaching to my end of year work with my students and it has allowed them to see the work that they did in a really interesting way. Rather than it being a score, it is a chunk of work that they can look at be proud of. #nt2t
Mind Frame 5:
“I teach through dialogue not monologue.”
Q4: What structures do you have in place to move from monologue to dialogue? What barriers have you encountered? #NT2t
Exactly! Once I let go of traditional test taking and moved to having the kids pick how they were going to show-what-they-know I saw a complete turn-around in attitudes & stress! Suddenly under-performers were performing! #NT2t
I use bar graphs to make it easy to see and then will update our self-assessed data as the week goes on and we celebrate the most improved on Fridays. I also use a super improver wall. It connects together really well! #nt2t
I agree with assessment because as an educator we need to know what we need to work on when it comes to our students. We grade our students and let them know what they need to change. Why can't they have a voice. #nt2t#Gen2108
A2; For me, being a change agent means I am sitting on the floor/chair or wherever the kids are and actually engaging with them. Change starts with modelling and engagement.#NT2t
A4: Time will always be a barrier, but...we can't use that as an excuse for staying on monologue mode. The more kids talk & engage with each other, the more active learners you have in your room. Not a free for all-but carefully planned dialogues. #NT2t
If some of my teachers never realized I am just awful at taking tests, I'm sure my grades in high school would have been awful. I could do everything in class and participate, which reflected in my grade. #nt2t
A4: since I’m not yet in the classroom, I don’t have real experience yet. But I can see some barriers being students not understanding a piece of literature that we read. To create dialogue, I could ask questions to get the gears grinding and to start up discussion #nt2t
A4 - Technologically using programs like Google Docs, @Flipgrid, and movie making, can get the students to move from monologue to dialogue. However, I have been using design thinking approaches recently and it has changed my way of thinking about my classroom. #nt2t
#nt2t A4 My smartphone...my goal is to be leading 1/3 of class, colaboratting w/Ss 1/3 of class, & Ss leading themselves 1/3 of class Phone keeps me on target
A4: Turn and talk and whisper teach are two ways I encourage my students to talk with one another while I check for understanding. I am not a lecturer and my students deserve content to be delivered in many different forms #NT2t
Q4: I have yet to student teach so I don’t have anything in place for this yet but I would try to just have an engaging lesson plan where I am encouraging student discussion. #Nt2t#gccedu
A4: This is really hard for me and I constantly think about this. I often blame time constraints and logistics as the reasons I HEAP info onto Ss rather than creating a dialogue (or step out altogether), but I know I could have done better. #nt2t
Mind Frame 5:
“I teach through dialogue not monologue.”
Q4: What structures do you have in place to move from monologue to dialogue? What barriers have you encountered? #NT2t
I am a horrible test taker too but was always able to memorize, take the test, and then not remember a thing. Was I really "learning?" I don't think so. #NT2t
A4. When I'm teaching my preschool Spanish students, I try to limit the monologue time or eliminate it all together and lead the class as more of a discussion where we ask questions in English or Spanish #nt2t
A4: this seems to be a tough transition from what little experience i have in front of a class. (M.S.,H.S. level) need good advice on this one....#avilaedtech#nt2t
I am a horrible test taker too but was always able to memorize, take the test, and then not remember a thing. Was I really "learning?" I don't think so. #NT2t
Checking out early to go to a library book sale. English nerds, am I right? Thanks so much for a great way to start Saturday morning! #edugladiators#nt2t
A4: For those of you who would like to move from monologue to dialogue, this might help: QMatrix https://t.co/XcYkiEghCk Helps you and student formulate questions. #NT2t
Mind Frame 7:
“It’s my role to develop positive relationships in class and staff rooms.”
Q5: What is being done in your district to develop positive relationships? #NT2t
The memorization is why the only tests I ever did well on were language (Italian) and history. If the answers could change by missing a number, I struggled. Thankfully I remember most of it still, but I never really learned math until I got to college #nt2t
A4 I like to teach both ways. I try not to just teach monologue to much because you can lose the in interest of the students and it hard to get them back. When you let them interact they open up more.#nt2t#Gen2108
Creating questions is key Kara. I highly suggest you become familiar with QMatrix https://t.co/XcYkiEghCk This is one of the BEST questioning tools around for educators and students to use/understand #NT2t
Q5: I don’t have a district yet but from my own experience with schools I have noticed an emphasis on working together to create a better learning environment. #Nt2t#gccedu
A5: my high school teachers got involved in our personal life in order to build relationship. They went to our games, musicals, and concerts and sometimes even volunteered to help out at such events. It made me feel like the cared about us beyond the classroom #nt2t
A5 I have been taught in my classes to try to create positive relationships with all students by asking them questions about outside of school stuff #nt2t
You bet! Happy to share! I have had teachers make huge posters of the matrix and leave up all year. Kids refer to it all year to check the type of questions they are asking. #NT2t
A5: I’ve always believed in positive behavior management.. I even hate the term ‘management’. Restorative circles, community meetings where we share our highs and lows for the day. I also be sure to make positive phone calls and notes home way more than any negatives ones. #nt2t
A5) Not enough. It's a top, well-regarded district so I think there's a tendency to rest on reputation. But it feels like there's more of an opportunity to build relationships with all of you around the country and world than in my own district. #nt2t
YES! And let them ask you questions about your "real" life too. There is nothing wrong with you appearing human to your students. It strengthens your relationship with them #NT2t
Teachers who take the extra measure to build a positive relationships with students' parents (and keep them informed) go a long way in connecting with their students. They become more approachable as well. #NT2t
It is truly one of my favorite resources of all time. You need to intro the types of questions & have kids practice creating and answering each type. You'll be amazed and how this helps them with high stakes tests as well when they can analyze the question. #NT2t
A5. I have not gotten to student teaching yet, but I know in high school all the teachers tried to get everyone to be comfortable with all the students in the class. It helped that it was a small school, but I always felt like I could talk to anyone in my classes #nt2t
Yeah...sigh...I think that is how it is all over the place Jeremy. Relationship building is a constant thing that can continue to grow and develop if nourished. Kind of like kids who are always hungry. #NT2t
Yes. It's tough for a teacher, I admit, to spend their personal time for work. But it does go a long way in strengthening relationships with students and parents. #NT2t
My teachers were like this too. Even now after graduating three years ago I still feel like they are involved in my life. They not only cared about me while I was in high school, but care about where I am going after. #nt2t
That is wonderful to hear Natsha! Building trust and rapport with your students should come first and foremost once you get into a classroom. If you can do this all te rest falls into place. Put the time into it-you'll never regret it. #NT2t
Q6: The “all” that is referred to is not only just students, it’s other educators, future educators, retired educators. We have to spread our knowledge of learning as much as we can. #NT2t#gccedu
A6: All means all - students, parents, peers, community...all... In a real learning community we are learning together, speaking the same language, supporting each other's efforts. It takes a village...really. #NT2t
A6: Growth mindset comes to mind for Ss & Ts. We all have something to learn & something to share. It’s unfair to expect our students to show growth if we aren’t willing to do the same. Peer observations for Ts for example can be a great way to see what others are doing! #NT2t

My school always focused on teachers and students working together. Everyone could rely on each other. I remember my favorite memory of a class was when a teacher said he was unsure of how to say my name so he went to other teachers to find out. #nt2t
#nt2t A6 lang of learning is the questioning & collaboration in my classroom It is infused when I promote a #QuestionEverything mentality to our shared learning space
A6: How do we teach this language of learning to everyone? Do you do anything in particular? As an undergrad, do you feel this is being addressed? #NT2t
Seriously. "My door is always open" means nothing if we're not specifically invited in. Y'all should be knocking down OUR doors. #FamilyEngagement#nt2t@jessie__bee__
Yeah...sigh...I think that is how it is all over the place Jeremy. Relationship building is a constant thing that can continue to grow and develop if nourished. Kind of like kids who are always hungry. #NT2t
This is fantastic! When it comes down to it, this is what you remember from school; the relationships, not the test you took or grades...it's about people and relationships. #NT2t
Language of learning = sharing observations, experiments, lessons with colleagues, peers, and parents. It's building an open network so everyone can learn from each other and grow as one. Because our goal isn't self-growth, but development for the community as a whole.
#NT2t
I feel like there is a lot of learning going on outside of the classroom inside schools. teachers learning from teaches, community members, parents, students, everybody... Im excited to become a part of that community one day soon. #avialedtech#nt2t

#NT2t
A6: “All” is anyone and everyone you come in contact with. There are always opportunities to teach others and not just content-based material. I think language of learning is sharing experiences and getting others excited about learning #nt2t
Yup. Particularly in elementary school, I remember so much about my teachers and much less about anything else. Still, I was also shaped by specific experiences. #nt2t
This is fantastic! When it comes down to it, this is what you remember from school; the relationships, not the test you took or grades...it's about people and relationships. #NT2t
A6 I think all refers to everyone involved in education a child. Parents, teachers, anyone else a student has should be informed. The language of learning is like when my physical therapist says why I do certain things. It is about awareness of how and why learning happens #nt2t
