Welcome to #BmoreEdchat this evening! Thank you to the @LoyolaEducation interns for moderating! Please intro yourself and share your favorite first year of teaching story.
Hi, I'm Erin Pellegrino, an intern in Baltimore City @LakelandSchool@BaltCitySchools. Even though I haven't started my first year of teaching yet, I am excited for the adventure that awaits next year! #BmoreEdChat

#BMoreEdChat Hi guys! I'm Eleanore and I am a first year teacher in PG County. I teach 6th grade ELA and Science. My favorite story is actually a running joke that I have with one of my classes-- all year they have been calling me "old." They will say sarcastically...
Hi I am Colleen, an intern in Baltimore City at Pine Grove Elementary School! I haven't started for my first year teaching but already have so many great memories from my first year as an intern! #BmoreEdchat
Hi #BmoreEdchat crew! Jessica, Ed Specialist at @Region12 for Digital Innovation and Social Studies. I taught my own niece my first year as a 3rd grade teacher...she graduates this year š¢
Hi, I'm Emma Imrie and I am a sophomore studying Education at Kent State University. Although I have not started my first year of teaching yet, I enjoy getting to know all the students I work with in the field! #BmoreEdChat
Hey #BmoreEdchat crew! Justin, resident principal @LakelandSchool here! My first year of teaching was a blur. I don't remember anything between my first day and Halloween!
Hi there! Rachel Nichols and Iām an Loyola intern @LakelandSchool right now in 4th grade going to leave my kiddos soon for 1st!! Definitely sad to leave them but excited for a new experience! #Bmoreedchat

That hearing young ppl and advocating with and for kids is more important than what I thought "discipline" or "management" should look like. #BmoreEdchat
A1: I wish I knew early in my career progress monitor...basically I did a lot for Ss but I did a crappy job of documenting my efforts which made getting them help more difficult. #BmoreEdchat
I student taught at the same school so I understood the procedures, but every year was different. Trust yourself and build relationships starting minute 1! #BmoreEdchat
Hey there #BmoreEdchat! Amber Glaros here- teacher educator w #UrbanTeachers at JHU.
Hard to pick a favorite... probably when @buttsy78 thrust #HarryPotter into my hands, said you make us read lots of genres.Try it! Polite kid speak for: 'stop being a hypocrite'
And I loved it!
In reply to
@bmoreedchat, @LoyolaEducation, @buttsy78
A1: I wish I was better at using data and implementing small group instruction early on. I only had 18 kids in my first class! They would have soared so much more ā¤ #BmoreEdchat
A1: As a student in the field I think it is important to establish a relationship with the parents. When I was in classrooms in the past, I do not think I did as much as I could to make sure I got to know the families of the students in the class and I wish I did. #BmoreEdChat
A1 I wish I had know that pedagogy and relationship building are the bedrock of teaching, but that it is ok for the relationship building to come first #BmoreEdchat
#Bmoreedchat A1: How important work-life balance is. The first few months of teaching I rarely gave myself a break. If you don't take a step away from your work every so often, you will be extremely exhausted & stressed. I'm still working on it, but definitely better at it now.
Hi!! My name is Kendra Sullivan and I am an intern at Pine Grove Elementary School in Baltimore County. I love student teaching and can't believe how fast this year has gone! #BmoreEdChat
A1- When I was working in summer programs, prior to teaching in the public schools, I had more of a "my way or the highway" attitude. Worked with some wonderful Ss, but that attitude isn't remotely the optimal approach for Ss learning, & demonstrating flexibility. #BmoreEdchat
Err .... um ...... time management? Probably write things down, use a calendar, and get someone to help one stay on track? (Still not good at it) #BmoreEdchat
A1 Also, I think I would have taken my time. I was (and still) always in a rush. Relish the time with students and staff. It goes really fast #BmoreEdchat
What would you say is the best way to monitor students progress and document important information in order to use it for the future? #BmoreEdChat A goal for my future classroom is to keep all the papers to a minimum (which might just be an unrealistic dream!
A1: to focus more on the kids than achieving a curriculum. You've got to follow their interests, learn about their lives, & meet their needs, through the curriculum not because of it #BmoreEdchat
A1: The procedures for getting support, etc. Because of the timelines that exist you want to make sure that you don't need to restart to check all of the boxes. #BmoreEdchat
A form that had a box for every kid...would make notes throughout the day and then transfer them at the end of the day to their digital file we used as a district. At the beginning I depended on my memory way too much. #BmoreEdchat
Making a calendar and preplanning what you do during your planning periods was life changing for me! Ex. Mon & tues: grading, Wed & Thurs: lesson planning, Fri: copies for next week #BmoreEdchat
In reply to
@itsmsforgione, @mrterborg, @bmoreedchat
A1: Not everyday will be how you imagined. You will be challenged and tried but you WILL get through it! Finding a balance between work and personal life is vital too! #Bmoreedchat
Agree. I also wish I knew that it was alright to "stray" once in a while in order to make those connections and build those relationships. #BmoreEdChat
A1 I wish I had know that pedagogy and relationship building are the bedrock of teaching, but that it is ok for the relationship building to come first #BmoreEdchat
How do you suggest making sure you're taking the time to appreciate the students' company knowing that as a first-year teacher (or any year, really) you have deadlines to meet and standards to address? #BmoreEdChat
Such intense stress is not uncommon in academia or even at universities like my own. Intense workloads, toxic environments, greater outputs with fewer resources, bargaining stress - we must support each other.
I used pen and paper, but I think Google Keep would be a great digital alternative...create a tag for each kid...could use your phone to add images or quick notes and tag. #BmoreEdchat
Hi everyone! Iām Tori, and Iām currently completing my internship at Solley Elementary. Iāve already grown so much as an educator and canāt wait to see what I learn throughout the rest of my experience! #bmoreedchat
A1 I wish I had know that pedagogy and relationship building are the bedrock of teaching, but that it is ok for the relationship building to come first #BmoreEdchat
How would you recommend slowing down and appreciating this time? I often find myself now moving too fast and being in a constant rush and i am only a student intern #BmoreEdChat
@bmoreedchat A1: I wish I knew about the importance of fluency. The idea that the brain decodes and comprehends. Fluency is made up of several components. Luckily I received this knowledge from @BaltCitySchools and @WitWisdomELA during PD. Make fluency great again #BmoreEdchat
Lear how to use your work calendar (and sync to personal if possible). Knowing when things are due and having one place to see them is HUGE for me). It is worth taking the time now to avoid missing deadlines

A1 I wish I had know that pedagogy and relationship building are the bedrock of teaching, but that it is ok for the relationship building to come first #BmoreEdchat
A2: my family and friends stocked my library with donated books from their youth! I lucked out that my school provides a lot of resources (books and math manipulatives) #BmoreEdChat
A2: garage sales were life when I first started teaching! Books upon books upon books for cheap! Go for books that represent your student population- kids need to see themselves in stories! #BmoreEdchat
#bmoreedchat I think finding a schedule that works for you is really important. For example, I tell myself I will leave by a certain time after school every day. Usually I try not to stay past 4pm. When I get home, I try not to touch any work until after I eat dinner...
A2: I am currently in a public preschool classroom and the resources we have are a lot of toys. Play is such an important aspect of students development at this young age. Along with that, we have a library full of books for students to read. #BmoreEdChat
That gives me a good 2 hours or so to relax. Then I plan/ grade for another hour or so. And then on the weekends I pick one day to do some work, and give myself the other day off! This works for me but may not work for everyone. #bmoreedchat
Pacing, set objectives (for yourself), figure out your milestones, identify allies, pair your objectives with school goals #BmoreEdChat (Work smart ... not hard ... whatever that means)
A2: I wish I knew I could reach out on Twitter for book donations. Recently, we @LakelandSchool reached out on Twitter for @ProjectLITComm books and we have already received almost 30 books! Your #PLN is powerful. #BmoreEdchat
1. You can say it.
2 Ask you kids how you can redeem the time.
3 I did things after school sometimes, but in the moment is the best time..
4. Throw the standards and deadlines out of the window and #chillax#BmoreEdchat
A2: Books are everything...my classroom library was and still is my prized possession...garage sales, book sales, @Scholastic warehouse sales....if you get them to love reading...you've won half the battle. #BmoreEdchat
@bmoreedchat A2: I love going to the @MDBookBank to stock my classroom library. When a student sees a āmust haveā book my response is āborrow itā or ākeep it for your own libraryā. I visit often enough itās a living library with fresh books weekly #BmoreEdChat
Hi! I am Natalia Goldenberg, ESOL at #RP233#BmoreEdChat I had 2 first year teaching experiences. The first one in Russia, the second one in the US. Over the years I worked with 8 student teachers in TESOL program.
How do you suggest making sure you're taking the time to appreciate the students' company knowing that as a first-year teacher (or any year, really) you have deadlines to meet and standards to address? #BmoreEdChat
Stephanie @LoyolaEducation grad faculty here! My 1st yr FT teaching was teaching children of the Cali cartel in the mid 90ās. Have u seen @NarcosNetflix ? #BmoreEdChat

Currently doing a reflective inquiry project on fluency with 3 of my students! Thank god my mentor gave me a handout from that PD! Tons of useful information #Bmoreedchat

#BmoreEdchat
This is an awesome piece of advice! I go through so many post-it notes taking notes on all sorts of things throughout the day! I like the idea of transferring notes at the end of the day! #BmoreEdchat
A1- This school year, along with teaching Pre-K, I am teaching adult ESOL. Been a great experience and a new challenge. Learning how to balance my energy on the days where I have to do both Pre-K (day) and ESOL (night) in order to support all of the Ss I work with. #bmoreedchat
A1 I wish I had know that pedagogy and relationship building are the bedrock of teaching, but that it is ok for the relationship building to come first #BmoreEdchat
I always stalked garage sales for books. Also, Ollie's had this huge book area for cheap. Would get a lot of books there, too, for my classroom library. I'd stock up on class sets of scissors, markers, rulers, etc during back to school sales. #BmoreEdchat

#BmoreEdChat A2: This is my first year teaching and Iāve learned how okay it is to ask other teachers for help. As for classroom resources, you invest a lot into your first classroom! But seeing it grow, and seeing the kids grow with it, is worth it.
A1) I wish I knew that it was ok to have a bad lesson. To feel like nothing went as planned. To cry. (Lots of crying). But that reflecting and adjust after a bad lesson is what makes a difference. Caring how the lesson went, even after 13 years of teaching, matters. #BmoreEdChat
@justincholbrook These all seem like aamzing places for resources! Thank you for this piece of advice! What would you suggest is the best place to get math manipulatives? #BmoreEdchat
I am so happy to be involved in Twitter while I am interning and for my future when I am a teacher. It will be so useful for advice and strategies! #BmoreEdchat

A3: I love whole brain teaching strategies, especially the call outs. It helps with management while also engaging students in discussions. Students eventually come up with their own callouts! #BmoreEdchat#wholebrainteaching
Thatās why #BmoreEdChat is great! Your community matters. It will make or break you as a teacher! Surround yourself with positive people who are in it for the right reasons!
We have table bins with shared supplies, student work and homework folders, and student line spots. I don't have student mailboxes because the kids use their homework folders to bring back and forth work/papers #BmoreEdChat
#bmoreedchat A2: The reading specialist has helped me out so much. She has given me so many books for my classroom library. I've also reached out to family members, and they love the idea of helping to build my classroom library. I also save up my amazon gift cards because...
A3: In our classroom, my favorite classroom management task is the power walk. When children become antsy and cannot focus on what they are doing, we take a break and power walk to the gym. The children run two laps and we head back to the classroom to re-focus. #BmoreEdChat

Thatās why #BmoreEdChat is great! Your community matters. It will make or break you as a teacher! Surround yourself with positive people who are in it for the right reasons!
Also, don't think you have to always buy every book...I really utilize the heck out of our public library @WacoLibrary ...plus it gives the kids variety. #BmoreEdChat
A3: I love using āIāll proceed when youāre ready.ā It was pointed out that phrasing āWe/I can do X when you do Yā really works. I saw a change in urgency. @ClassDojo is a great app. I like tracking behavior goals... bins and crates help too! #BmoreEdChat
A3) 2x10 strategy. Pick a kid who has been having challenges, or you feel like you arenāt reaching. Talk to them for 2 minutes a day for 10 days in a row. About anything. Just talk. Show you care. Watch what happens! #BmoreEdchat
Does anyone have any "must-have" organizational tips like certain bins or labelers that make organizing the classroom as stress-free as possible? #bmoreedchat
So important to care about the work, and reflect on the work daily. You and your Ss will benefit. What went well during my lesson? What were the obstacles to success? How can I adapt to better support my Ss learning? #bmoreedchat
I had a terrible time getting papers handed out when I 1st taught two sections. So I hung 2 plastic shoe organizers, labeled the names, & assigned a student in each section to making sure the necessary papers got in them everyday. #BmoreEdchat
A3: we have table bins filled with supplies (crayons, pencils, etc) the kids share the supplies and return them when finished. This way, all kids are prepared ā¤(and we don't have to worry about lost pencil boxes lol) #BmoreEdChat
A3: Classroom management...morning meetings...use this time to teach coping skills through literacy, give time for Ss to build relationships w/ea other, show them that you care abt them as a person. #BmoreEdchat
A3 Student lead lessons....You talk about students having empathy. Have a peer lead a class and see how students rally behind that student/teacher #BmoreEdchat
Q4: What tips would you give early career teachers for building positive relationships with students, teacher colleagues and/or administrators? #BmoreEdchat
A3: You can never have enough bins!!! I use them every single day. For example, I have 2 classes and they know that any piece of work they are turning in for a grade goes in their class bin. #bmoreedchat
I love this Jessica! Teaching is so much more than what is in the curriculum. I love morning meeting with my class each day! It's a great time to build relationships with the students and understand their needs a little better! #BmoreEdchat
Such great advice! As an intern I have noticed how important it is to continue to build relationships with my students. It really does make a difference! #BmoreEdchat
A3: Take the time to put out everything you will need (night before or early morning). My students are too young to be able to sit while I'm searching for things. Also, plan for more than you may need - you can always save it for another day. #BmoreEdchat
A3: One of my favorite classroom management ideas is the āmagic number.ā Students who are caught doing their best roll a dice... if they roll the magic number, they win a prize! The first graders LOVE it, even if they donāt roll the #! Always look for the positive! #bmoreedchat
A3- Building Ss leaders. Giving Ss opportunities to take ownership of the learning. Builds both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and positively impacts Ss growth! #BmoreEdchat
Such a great point! Coteaching is such a great strategy to learn how your students want to learn! It also pushes the students teaching to master the content! Check out @chrisemdin for a great coteaching model! #BmoreEdchat
A3 Student lead lessons....You talk about students having empathy. Have a peer lead a class and see how students rally behind that student/teacher #BmoreEdchat
A3 It is not really a technique, but everyone shares in everyone else's humanity. I also manage student convo using the terms constructive or nonconsecutive. Everything we do must be constructive..it is how we promote humanity #BmoreEdchat
I think this is super important! One thing my mentor teacher stresses to me and to our students is that WE are in OUR classroom with OUR supplies so that WE can learn - it is a safe and shared space for everyone to succeed #BmoreEdChat
A3: keeping a bin of emergency student work for curveball days. Itās been particularly helpful when resource has been canceled last minute or there is any sort of weather delay.
A3) also, for every negative piece of feedback or reflection, follow up with at least two positives. Donāt hold grudges and give second chances. Proactive relationship building is the best behavior management. #BmoreEdchat
A4: When it comes to building positive relationships with students, teachers, and colleagues I think it is important to find the commonalities. Disagreements are going to always be there, but finding something to build on together creates a positive relationship. #BmoreEdChat
Q4: What tips would you give early career teachers for building positive relationships with students, teacher colleagues and/or administrators? #BmoreEdchat
A4: Create structures where you ask for feedback and LISTEN! Your kids provide the most honest and powerful impact on your teaching. As a school leader now, what the students say impacts my practice daily. #BmoreEdchat
Always make the good call home first! Speaking as a parent, it is so stressful to hear from school. Compliment sandwich does not work here. Make caregivers your partners by telling them their kids are great before you have to tell them about their kids' mistakes.
#BmoreEdchat
Q4: What tips would you give early career teachers for building positive relationships with students, teacher colleagues and/or administrators? #BmoreEdchat
A4: I call every parent for the entire grade I teach (6th this year & roughly 70 kids). I talked with families & students before school started and asked what they expected of me etc. I also schedule mix and mingles to get to know kids 1:1 the first 2 weeks #BmoreEdChat
I use them for my copies for the week! Makes finding everything a whole lot easier instead of papers all over my desk. I got mine on Amazon. I think it was only about $30. I definitely recommend it! #bmoreedchat.
A3) also, for every negative piece of feedback or reflection, follow up with at least two positives. Donāt hold grudges and give second chances. Proactive relationship building is the best behavior management. #BmoreEdchat
A4) shout out board! Kids write shout outs as a choice when work is completed and put them in a box. Every Friday, read the shout outs and post them on the board! My shout out board has replaced my colored clip chart. Focus on the positive #BmoreEdchat
As an intern I find student advice to be very powerful! Throughout the week I sit down with my students during our class meetings and have open discussions about how I can improve as a teacher and how we can all work to create a more positive class #bmoreedchat
A4- Very important to build authentic relationships. Operate with an attitude of love, whether offering praise or correction. Accountability in love produces positive results. When Ss know you care... #BmoreEdchat
A3: My favorite classroom management techniques are:
1. proximity control/surface management
2. Logical consequences (but you HAVE to follow through)
3. āThe glareā (definitely has worked in 4th grade) #BmoreedChat
A4: Let parents know you care and let them know often; celebrate achievements and find achievements for those who struggle! Attitude towards a child will go a long way. #BmoreEdchat
A4: lunch bunch is always fun, whether it's with kids or staff members š you learn a lot when sharing a meal. (PS check out last week's lunch bunch crew!) #BmoreEdChat
A4: get to know your students interests and talk to them about anything and everything! They will share! Observe and visit your colleagues- especially ones on other teams, join committees, stop by and say hey! Put yourself out there and let them get to know you! #BmoreEdchat
A4: lunch bunch is always fun, whether it's with kids or staff members š you learn a lot when sharing a meal. (PS check out last week's lunch bunch crew!) #BmoreEdChat
These are awesome and I feel like they could be used for so many different things in a classroom! Would totally help keep things organized. #BmoreEdchat
#bmoreedchat A4: Relationships with students start DAY ONE! Take time that first week of school to allow them to get to know you and for you to get to know them. One of the first things they did was write me a letter about themselves. Also...
One idea from tonight that I want to encourage you to continue is learning through a #PLN...whether it be Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin...find your tribe and lean on them! #BmoreEdChat
Agreed! Asset based thinking is the most valuable thing we can exhibit in our classroomsāwhen we recognize and focus on our students strengths, they become more confident! #Bmoreedchat
I like eating lunch w/ my Ss. Great way to connect with them in a non-academic way and learn more about their personalities and interests. #bmoreedchat
I love doing lunch bunches too!! It gives me more time to build relationships with my students. I love it, and so do they!! They talk about it all week and save up "Cardinal Cash" to have one with me and all their friends #BmoreEdChat
then I responded to their letters and we kept writing back and forth to each other. Keep building relationships throughout the whole school year. I just started doing lunch bunches on Fridays with my students. #bmoreedchat A4
A3: One of my favorite classroom management ideas is the āmagic number.ā Students who are caught doing their best roll a dice... if they roll the magic number, they win a prize! The first graders LOVE it, even if they donāt roll the #! Always look for the positive! #bmoreedchat
A5: An idea from tonight that I am going to try in my classroom is the idea of a "lunch bunch." This is such a fun idea to get to know the students better personally and even create new friendships between other students. #BmoreEdChat
A5 I will definitely look at what people wrote for Q3. There is nothing I like more than stealing from teachers. It keeps me fresh and in an innovative space #BmoreEdchat
A4. #BMOREEDCHAT I don't remember who said it, but one of my favorite quotes is that "students don't learn from teachers they don't like" So really take the time to get to know them! It goes a LONG way
I agree! The first day is SO important. I also think something as simple as learning your students names can make a huge difference in the relationships you build with them! #BmoreEdchat
A5: Iām excited to read Whole Brain Teaching. Reaching all of our kids is critical. The relationships we build impact the content we teach. The beauty of teaching is that we are forgiven each day because of our reflective and reflexive ability to change and improve #BmoreEdChat
I love this idea! Such a meaningful way to create and KEEP positive relationships with all students, especially those who aren't extraverted! #BmoreEdchat
In the beginning of my internship, I really struggled with positive feedback... everything I said was a correction or a quiet "good" and then moved on - I have seen the difference in my students and my teaching now that I focus on positive reinforcement!!! #BmoreEdChat
#bmoreedchat A4: Relationships with students start DAY ONE! Take time that first week of school to allow them to get to know you and for you to get to know them. One of the first things they did was write me a letter about themselves. Also...
Building relationships with students is definitely crucial! @ms_ryan_ we do this everyday in my mentor teacher's classroom during morning circle! My favorite part of the day! #BmoreEdchat
I structure them like mini-lessons. Just like my class, there is not much time spent talking. That leads to things going off the rails. I also serve as a glorified aid and coach #BmoreEdchat
I love this idea! Such a meaningful way to create and KEEP positive relationships with all students, especially those who aren't extroverted! #BmoreEdchat
A5 I definitely want to do some more research on #wholebrainteaching. I also think taking a power walk with my students between subjects would be a great brain break! #BmoreEdchat
This is such a great idea! I love that you wrote back to your students so that they got to know you as well. This is definitely something I would love to incorporate in my future classrooms #bmoreedchat
I also coach on what kinds of questions to ask, because asking the wrong kind of question at the wrong time, will have the entire class blurting out... #BmoreEdchat
That was fast! Thanks to all the @LoyolaEducation interns! All the best as you enter your first year in teaching! Please reach out to anybody in the #BmoreEdchat PLN throughout your journey!
A5 I definitely want to do some more research on #wholebrainteaching. I also think taking a power walk with my students between subjects would be a great brain break! #BmoreEdchat
A4) shout out board! Kids write shout outs as a choice when work is completed and put them in a box. Every Friday, read the shout outs and post them on the board! My shout out board has replaced my colored clip chart. Focus on the positive #BmoreEdchat
#bmoreedchat Loyola Interns-- You will be amazing and your students will LOVE you!!! @LoyolaEducation & your internships have prepared you well. Also if you need help with your portfolios/ finding a job/ etc feel free to reach out! Being a teacher is THE BEST!!!!
#BmoreEdchat Hello, Sorry I am late. Rebecca McClure, 5th Grade ELA and GAL teacher. My first I learned so much and bonded with my mentor and now best bud Sally Hoosier.
So great having so many @LoyolaEducation Ss here for #BmoreEdchat tonight! The learning never stops. There's always room to grow. Teaching is the best job in the world. It has its challenges, but the reward is far greater than the cost.
A1: Something I wish I had known before beginning teaching is the importance of assessment/data. Data drives small group instruction, indep. practice, tutorials, and it truly represents what I was doing correct or incorrect as an educator #BmoreEdchat#Beagreentdot#SBVanguard
I was listening to JimHarbaugh talk about game planning. He said gameplan install goes inThurs. Most teams do it on Wed/Tues. He said UM even make tweeks on Fridays! It just goes to show that planning never ends. What is more important is how you execute your plans #BmoreEdchat
